King creosote-Kenny and beths musical boat rides-Reissue of kenny andersens debut solo album for the domino label. Originally released way back in 2003. The album also featured guest vocals from none other than james yorkston who was also a longtime member of the fence collective group based in east fife. Its a truly superb collection of crazed psychedelic tinged traditional folk sounds as only king creosote knows how. Its a much more stripped down rustic sound compared to his more recent outings. Magik markers-Balf quary-Magik markers return with a new album and the long awaited follow up to the rather superb album boss from 2007. Its pretty much as you were as elisa ambrogio and pete nolan blast off into sonic youth like noise from the word go. Imagine early sonic youth blended with lots of shouty no wave sounds. Having said that these guys are much more than just a sonic youth soundalike as they delve more into the murky world of avant garde noise and even some all out psyche rock. At times bordering on the pure sonic assault of the likes of lightning bolt whilst also taking in some much more blissed out stoner rock elements. May 2009-Cd-Drag city-€13.99

Prefuse 73-Everything she touched turned ampexian-Scott heron returns with one of his most psychedelic collections to date on the warp label. The album features a massive 29 short tracks and sees heron explore lots of analog tinged space age soundscapes. He may indeed have singlehandedly invented what could be termed psychedelic hip hop or prog hip hop. The album will now also come packaged with a very very limited special bonus disc recorded acoustically exclusively for this release. Six organs of admittance-Rtz-A double cd retrospective of hard to find and previously unreleased gems from ben chasnys vaults on the drag city label. The first cd features a collection of non album material culled from several split releases going back to the resurrection split release from 2000 with charalambides. Also features tracks from warm earth from 2002 and three very rare release from the three lobed subscription only series. The final pieces on the first disc feature some of the earliest recordings going right back to 1998 and features three pieces that have never been released before. The second disc features the ultra rare nightly trembling album which was originally released in 1999 in an edition of only 33 copies. I could spent all day reviewing the contents of this album so lets just say it features rather a lot of avant garde folk, psychedelic free folk, drone based john fahey like guitar instrumentation, hypnotic guitar drones, eastern folk vibes and bluegrass dirges. An essential collection for lovers of modern avant garde folk sounds. May 2009-2cd-Drag city-€15.99
Super extra bonus party-Night horses-The second album from this fun filled collective and previous winners of the choice music prize. The album features a host of guest spots including cadence weapon, mr lif, irish band heathers, rodrigo telles, ann scott, rarely seen above ground aka rsag, maykay from fight like apes, captain moonlight and white noise. The album features another blistering collection of the most varied sounds you are likely to hear from any one band spread across just one album. The album opens up with a big guitar heavy rock explosion before settling down with a bit of dirty hip hop courtesy of guest vocalist cadence weapon. The album features lots of funky new wave rock like action sounding like new order and happy pills whilst the track with heathers guesting is just the most delicious slice of sunshine indie pop. This album is best approached like a 13 track compilation rather than the work of just one band. Another damn fine collection from a very talented collective of musicians. Its full of intricate guitar based post rock workouts with plenty of fuzzed up explosive moments. Its mostly an album that concentrates the heavier side of post rock with a total emphasis on the word rock. Bastard rain, the-Of stolen birds-The debut full length album from this dublin based 3 piece on the drunken lust label. Features eleven tracks of sparse slightly dirge like swampy sounds. Bronnt industries kapital-Hard for justice-This is the third album to date from this bristol based electronic outfit and their first for the get physical label. The album is full of lush almost cinemtatic like dubby electronica sounds. There are lots of deep almost ambient like beats throughout blended with lots of live sounding bass, brass and retro synth sounds. The more funky like tunes kind of remind me a bit of the early sounds of air coupled with the slightly krautrock repitition of boards of canada. If you like dubby late night electronica then you have just found your new favourite album. April 2009-Cd-Get physical-€16.50
Crystal antlers-Tentacles [comes with bonus mp3 coupon]-The debut full length from this californian based outfit on the touch and go label. The album is a perfect blast of fuzzed up old school post punk, new wave and caustic indie rock complete with scuzzy organ sounds and howling vocal sounds. It kind of reminds me of what les savy fav would sound like jamming with the mc5. There are also touches of high energy sixties garage psyche in here along with some elements of the more visceral sounds of the likes of at the drive in. Davis, miles-Miles [the new miles davis quintet]-Originally released in 1955 on the ojc label. The album comes reissued in the original blue sleeve with liner notes by ira gitler. The quintet features davis on trumpet, john coltrane on sax, red garland on piano, paul chambers on bass and philly joe jones on drums. Davis, miles-On the corner-Originally released in 1972 this is an album that still divides miles davis fans all over the world. At the time of its release davis cited the influence of sly stone and james on the album aswell as namechecking the works of karlheinz stockhausen. The album features four lengthy workouts with one piece featuring a total of three drummers playing at the same time.-Cd-Columbia-€9.99
Dear reader-Replace why with funny-A rather beautiful debut album on the city slang label from this johannesburg based duo. At times the album kind of reminds me of an indie pop like take on the kooky sounds of kate bush with hints of rootsy americana. There is a lovely blend of sounds ranging from the totally stripped down piana led ballad vibe to some purely delicious pop songs. May 2009-Cd-City slang-€15.99
Dylan, bob-Bob dylans greatest hits-Originally issued in 1967 this greatest hits collects tracks from his first seven albums. Features only ten songs but each one is a pure gem from dylans early career, features blowin in the wind, like a rolling stone, rainy day woman, times they are a changin, it aint me babe, mr tambourine man, i want you, subteranean homesick blues, just like a woman and non album track positively fourth street. American import reissue on the columbia label-Lp-Columbia-€16.99
Earle, steve-Townes-The album features a collection of townes van zandt covers by steve earle. Features guest appearences by tom morello from rage against the machine, his own son justin townes earle and earles wife alison moorer. Earle has always cited townes van zandt as one of his favourite songwriters so its only fitting that he got around to recording these 15 tracks as a mark of respect to the great man himself. Earle is also joined by dennis crouch, greg morrow, tim o brien, darrell scott, shad cobb, john spiker and steve christensen. What i love about this album is the way earle has taken the basic songs and totally stamped his own style on them. May 2009-Cd-New west-€16.99

Felice brothers-Yonder is the clock-The follow up to their self titled album from 2008 on loose records. This new collection is released through the conor oberst run label team love. These guys are like a great big melting pot of american roots music from the last hundred years. Going right back to some early roots and bluegrass sounds up to the much more modern down home sounds of alt country and the no depression sound. The album also takes in the classic early folk sounds of bob dylan and also the rootsy rock of springsteen. You can definitely hear the influence of the likes of the band, the flying burrito brothers and gram parsons solo work in here. Perfectly rustic campfire roots rock with that classic early kind of bar room vibe about it. May 2009-Cd-Team love-€18.99
Foxx, john and robin guthrie-Mirrorball [with numbered art print]-Limited edition pressing on 180g audiophile vinyl. Includes a hand numbered art print by john foxx and is limited to only 1000 copies. Along with several solo albums through the years foxx if probably best known as one of the founding members of ultravox. Robin guthrie is the former guitarist with the cocteau twins. Amazingly enough the album actually sounds like john foxx fronting the cocteau twins. Guthrie provides all manner of his trademark floating guitar sounds behind the reverb laden ethereal sounds of foxx. If anything it kind of reminds me of a blend of the cocteau twins and dead can dance. Its a really dreamlike collection of layered sounds with a beautifully calming feel to it. Groupshow-The martyrdom of groupshow-Groupshow is a brand new collaborative project featuring three of germanys most respected electronic avant garde artists. The album features the works of jan jelinek, hano leichtmann aka static and andrew pekler from sad rockets. The trio improvised and recorded many hours of material for this project which has now been edited down to f0rty minutes of abstract electronica. The album ranges in sound from the scratchy lo fi vibes of the bbc radiophonic workshop to the synth heavy sounds of both seventies krautrock and space rock. Its a lovely charming blend of glitchy sound effects and beautifully warm synth sounds. Its got a very hypnotic overall feel about it with lots of pulsating keyboard sounds layered behind some fennesz like effects. May 2009-Cd-Scape-€16.99
Hollows-Broken notes for winter homes-The return of one of our favourite underground acts from the past few years here in dublin. The band have three previous releases on both slow loris and their own label. Features greg o brien who also records under at last an atlas and gary morrison. The album features six delicate slices of lo fi bedroom sounds coming across like some acoustic folky take on the slo core vibes of bands like low. There is a beautiful simplicity about these tracks with slowly strummed acoustic guitars met with gentle keys and glockespiel. This one is best enjoyed with a pair of headphones and a darkened room. Jabbas-Upside to the downside-The debut album from this new irish based outfit on strimbili records. Features a very funky blend of underground rock sounds, heavy electro rock and chunky punk funk. Francis, valerie-Slow dynamo [signed copies]-The debut album from this irish based singer songwriter on vf records. Features a delicious collection of woozy late night electronic tinged mellow pop songs. The album was produced by jimmy eadie who has worked with both jape and david kitt in the recent past. Its a beautiful collection of layered electronic pop sounds ala postal service or some of the more recent rumblings from the morr music label coupled with some acoustic based bedroom folk sounds with a somewhat jazz like hint. Put them both together and you end up with one very very accomplished debut album that gently sucks you in. The album features lots of gentle electronic beats, woozy keyboard sounds and the whispered tones of francis voice. Hollows-Broken notes for winter homes-The return of one of our favourite underground acts from the past few years here in dublin. The band have three previous releases on both slow loris and their own label. Features greg o brien who also records under at last an atlas and gary morrison. The album features six delicate slices of lo fi bedroom sounds coming across like some acoustic folky take on the slo core vibes of bands like low. There is a beautiful simplicity about these tracks with slowly strummed acoustic guitars met with gentle keys and glockespiel. This one is best enjoyed with a pair of headphones and a darkened room. Jerry fish and the mudbug club-The beautiful untrue-Brand new album from irish based songwriter jerry fish. Features the recent single back to before. The more tex mex like brass led sounds really remind me of some early calexico albums. Junior85-Wiiiiiiiiide awake-Junior85 is a musician and composer from galway. He also plays drums with so cow and occassionally appears with vince mack mahon, local living guy, laura sheeran and viking moses. This is the third in a regular series of eps to be released throughout the year on his own label. This is much more uptempo affair compared to the previous ep sleepy from last month. Imagine the dubby ambient sounds of the orb given an injection of energy with added fuzzy guitars. May 2009-Cds-Own label-€4.99

Music for dead birds-And then it rained for seven days-The debut release on the irish based label rusted rail from this west of ireland based two piece. The album opens up with some perfectly ramshackle lo fi indie rock ala pavement or sebadoh before settling into a much more laid back indie folk mood. Sounding at times like some bedroom folky take on gradaddy meets early elliott smith the album will tick all the right boxes for all you lovers of lo fi indie sounds. Its got that lovely laid back loose kind of sound that will most definitely appeal to early yo la tengo fans with just a hint at the weirder side of psyche folk. The eight track mini album comes beautifull packaged yet again courtesy of rusted rail in a miniature 3 inch card sleeve. Feeney, julie-Pages [this album will ship out to you on the 5th of june]-The second album from irish based julie feeney. The follow up to the choice music prize winning debut album 13 songs from 2005. The album was performed and produced almost entirely by feeney herself. The album also features a full orchestra conducted by julie. This is probably one of the more original collections from an irish artist that we have heard all year so far. The album has the lush orchestal feel of the last joanna newsom album scored by van dyke parks with lots of dramatic bursts and at times an almost broadway like feel. Add in a bit of the kooky off kilter pop sounds of kate bush and you are only getting close. Feeney uses the orchestral and brass sounds to simply accentuate her quirky vocal delivery. The album is like some modern classical pop record with moments bordering on some old musicals and plenty more inbetween.
