Road Records new releases March 25th 2010

Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

I am glad to say we are back on track and on time this week for a change.
We have a first for you this week, our album of the week and single of the week are both from Irish artists, can’t remember if that has ever happened before.
This weeks album of the week is the truly superb new cd from The Redneck Manifesto, a real treat for all you instrumental post rock fans out there. They have to be one of our favourite Irish bands around at the moment, and probably some of the nicest people we have ever dealt with in our 13 years in business. The album is on special offer this week for only €13.99 on cd, the vinyl will be with us in about 2 weeks, apologies for the delay but there have been some problems with the pressing of the album so you won’t find them anywhere yet.
Our single of the week this week goes to Logikparty with their debut single “Good Hood” and before the rumours start, yes the drummer does work here and yes we are extremely biased about it. In fairness if you hear the single I think you will agree with us that it is quite good.
The new Autechre album is now in stock this week, who would have thought we would see a day when an Irish band would beat Autechre to our album of the week slot eh. The album is on special this week on cd for only €13.99. We do have some vinyl copies of the limited edition box, they are €33.00 and we only have 10 in total. Its first come first served with the vinyl, we won’t be listing them online as they are far too heavy to post out so if you want to get your hands on one then I highly recommend you email us back as soon as you can.
Another gem of a release this weeks comes from the Dum Dum Girls on the Sub Pop label, this is pure heaven if you are a fan of classic fuzzed up jangly indie pop. The cd is only €12.99 and the limited coloured vinyl is €13.99, the vinyl also comes with an mp3 download coupon.
Fans of mellow blissed out electronica should check out the stunning compilation we have just received from a wonderful new Japanese based label called Nothings66. The cd is called Duskscape Not Seen and features new and exclusive material from artists on labels like City Centre Offices, Ghostly International and Type Records. If [like me] you like a bit of mellow ambient electronica at the end of the day then this is pretty much an essential purchase.
What a week this is for Galaxie 500 fans, whilst you may have all three albums already, Domino Records have now released them as deluxe editions with each cd coming with a full bonus disc. They are also all reissued on vinyl again, its been a while since they have been available and they all comes with mp3 download coupons too.
I have to say we are all loving the new High Places album on Thrill Jockey at the moment here, the album is only €14.99 on cd and vinyl, the vinyl also comes with a download coupon.

We are getting very excited about our plans for Record Store Day on April 17th and we should have some news for you next week sometime on our instore lineup along with just some the choice limited releases coming out for that day.

That’s my lot for this week anyway, have a good weekend and see you next week.

Enjoy the list !

Redneck manifesto-Friendship-Brand new album from one of irelands very finest instrumental post rock outfits. Its hard to believe this is their first album in nearly six years now, the last album i am brazil was released way back in 2004, for some reason it just doesnt seem that long. The album was recorded in blackbox studios in france and is probably their first to really incorporate the keyboard sounds of fifth member neil o connor [aka somadrone]. Its definitely an album much more based on krautrock like rhythms, its still jam packed with intricate post rock guitar interplay but this one has a real motorik like groove provided by some sublime drum and bass action. If anything this album sounds more like the redneck manifesto jamming with can or neu, the lush analog synth sounds really do add a whole new dimension to their already rather complex sound. This truly is pure heaven for lovers of either intricate post rock or trance like krautrock from one of the finest in ireland [if not worldwide]. It may not have the same raw edge of their first album but i think you will find this is up there as one of their finest, if not their best so far. The album comes in a lovely embossed digipack sleeve. March 2010-Cd-The richter colleceive-€13.99

Besnard lakes-The besnard lakes are the roaring night-The besnard lakes finally return after a three year hiatus with the long awaited follow up to the besnard lakes are the dark horse. The band were originally formed in 2001 by montreal based husband and wife pairing jace lasek and olga goreas, they released their previous album on the jag jaguwar label aswell, their first collection [volume one] was on the english label earworm way back in 2005. This is an album of true epic beauty sounding at times like a more rootsy rock take on shoegazing fronted by the beach boys. Its has to be said straight away though, that there is much more going on here than just a few simple comparisons, this is an album of truly expansive sounds. In fact, i cant think of many albums that make me think of fleetwood mac and my bloody valentine at the same time. Its got hints of seventies rock, both of the rootsy variety [ala neil young] and the more melodic [dare i say elo] with plenty of hefty guitar solo workouts thrown in. What this pair do though is take all those ingredients and make something both retro and totally original sounding, utterly infectious at times whilst also not afraid to rock out too. There are also moments that remind me of the blissful intimacy of the likes of mazzy star or even low with lots of hazy reverb drenched guitar sounds. They have hinted at greatness with the previous two albums but i really think they have achieved it with this new collection. March 2010-Cd-Jag jaguwar-€11.99

Autechre-Oversteps-Autechre return with their tenth studio album to date and dare i say it but this is probably one of their most melodic and accessible albums so far. Hard to believe these guys have been making albums since 1993, yes indeed incunabula came out that long ago. Its also been two years since their last album quaristice [also on the warp label]. Its not often you can use the words beautiful and autechre in the same sentence but this album truly is a thing of beauty, it may be an album that will divide longtime fans as its definitely one of their more mellow collections. Its still full of crunchy harsh sounds, darkly evil even, but there is definitely a warmth to this collection that hasn't really appeared before. I may be going mad here but i think i can even hear live instruments on this album, a harp or harpsichord seems to appear on the third and fourth track at least, adding a somewhat oriental like feel to proceedings. As ever with any autechre album its must be said the production of this record is truly sublime, with so much going on there is still real clarity to what they do, every sound is given its own little space in the mix. Its probably one of their most ambient collection but still superb nonetheless. The album comes in a lovely four part foldout card sleeve. March 2010-Cd-Warp-€13.99

Double dagger-Masks-The return of this baltimore based trio with their new mini album on the thrill jockey label. The album comes packaged in three different sleeves, each one with different mask on the front. The album features another damn fine collection of angular post punk sounds full of choppy guitars and howling angst ridden vocal sounds. It kind of reminds me of a more grunged up take on the early post hardcore sounds of the likes of fugazi blended with the bass heavy vibes of mcclusky. March 2010-Cd-Thrill jockey-€10.99

Dum dum girls-I will be-The debut full length from the dum dum girls on the sub pop label. The band have previously released an ep on captured tracks, a 7 inch on hozac and an ep on zoo music. The album was recorded at home by main songwriter dee dee and was mixed with the help of richard gottehrer. The album features thirty minutes of superb retro indie rock action full of fuzzed up jangly guitar sounds with just the odd hint of sixties motown thrown in. Imagine the jesus and mary chain jamming with the shop assistants and the ronettes. Its got a lovely raw feel about it, full of reverb laden distorted guitars and stripped down drum sounds. Anyone into the sounds of the c86 era will just fall in love with this from the word go. March 2010-Cd-Sub pop-€12.99

Golden triangle are a brooklyn based six piece outfit and this here album is a damn fine collection of scuzzy psychedelic garage blues meets no wave. At times it kind of reminds me of some early sonic youth on a slightly more sixties garage blues like trip, its totally lo fi and distorted to the max too. Hidden deep beneath all the fuzz though are some infectiously catchy slices of no wave pop, it could almost be jangly indie pop if it were not for all the mary chain like distortion. March 2010-Cd-Hardly art-€12.99

High places-High places vs mankind-High places vs mankind is the second full length album from mary pearson and rob barber as high places on the thrill jockey label. The band were originally formed in brooklyn in 2006 and have sinced relocated to los angeles. The album features a beautifully rambling collection of totally psychedelic dubby electronica with some odd hints of ethereal psyche folk thrown in. Its a collection of sometimes ambient like vibes with hints of everything from animal collective to old english folk. Its quite a haunting ghostly like collection of different sounds, you kind of get the feeling the album was totally improvised live in the studio, hence you just never know what direction its going to head off into. Kleenex / liliput-Live recordings, tv clips and roadmovie-Kleenex formed in switzerland in 1978 but then had to change their name to liliput in 1979 due to the threat of legal action from kimberly-clark. The band went on to release their debut album on the rough trade label in 1982, an album that still remains out of print unfortunately. The album features ten tracks recorded live in biel [when they were still called kleenex] and the remainder are from zurich circa 1983. The album features a host of never before released tracks and some gems that did feature on their rough trade album. The dvd is a document of their 1982 european tour and includes tv studio quality sound and video as well as some very rare super 8 footage. The cd features a total of 24 live tracks and the album comes housed in a lovely card gatefold sleeve. March 2010-2cd-Kill rock stars-€13.99

Logikparty-Good hood-Ok so i should begin by saying this single review is going to be extremely biased, why, because the drummer in the band works here in road records and has threatened me with violence unless we make it single of the week. So anyway, this is the debut single from this new [ish] dublin based outfit, released on 7 inch only on their own label white plague reocrds. Limited to only 500 copies and it also comes with a free download coupon. The single is a rather superb slice of jerky post punk meets new wave noise. Imagine gang of four jamming with shellac with just a touch of the au pairs thrown in, its brilliantly jerky with lots of post punk anger in its delivery. The single also features the hypnotically funky track iodine on the flip side. March 2010-7"-White plague records-€4.99

Maledictus sound-Wedding party-Limited edition reissue of this impossibly rare and unknown vanity release by tape manipulator jean pierre massiera. Originally released in 1970, they were also later re-edited and re-titled for the chico magnetic band project. Limited to only 500 copies. The single also features cambronne on the flip side. Its a lovely retro style dukebox single repressing with a large centre hole cutout in the middle. March 2010-7"-Finders keepers-€6.99

Sereena maneesh-No 2 / abyss in b minor-Album number two from this norwegian shoegazing / psyche rock outfit, now signed to the 4ad label. Its a fairly thunderous collection of dreamy psyche rock action with lots shimmering shoegazing like guitar action. Sounding at times like my bloody valentine on a somewhat more sixties like pshcye rock vibe whilst also throwing in the odd slice of pure sunshine indie pop [ala lush]. The album also has a hint of the more uptempo take on the shoegazing sound that bands like ride seemed to be so good at. March 2010-Cd-4ad-€12.99

Stornoway-I saw you blink-The first single from this oxford based outfit for the 4ad label, they have released two limited edition singles previously on their own label [i think]. This is the first track to be taken from their brand new debut album, also on the 4ad label. The band were recently on the highly respected bbc sound of 2010 tastemaker poll so great things are expected from them. The single is a truly infectiously catchy slice of pastoral indie pop, believe me, just one listen and it will be stuck in your head all day long. Its got a little bit of an indie folk kind of feel about it, imagine belle and sebastian on a much more indie pop like buzz. Also features gondwanaland on the flip side. March 2010-7"-4ad-€4.50

To rococo rot-Forwardness fridays ep-Limited edition twelve inch release to coincide with the release of their brand new album speculation on the domino label. The ep features the original version of forwardness which appears on the new album. The ep also features a rather superb remix of the track fridays by shackleton [west green rd remix] along with a remix of forwardness by traversable wormhole [aka adam x]. March 2010-12"-Domino-€8.99

To rococo rot-Speculation-German electronic / post rock outfit return with a brand new collection on the domino label. The album was recorded at the legendary faust studios and features the regular trio of robert lippok, ronald lippok and stefan schneider. The album even features a guest spot from original faust member jochen imeler on the closing track. The album features a beautiful blend of dubby post rock sounds and gently throbbing electronica. At times its almost like the meeting of early tortoise and four tet which sees intricate guitar lines and keyboards merge seamlessy behind gentle minimal techno beats. The album also has plenty of touches of older seventies like krautrock and even the odd hint of new orders early forays bass heavy electronic new wave. March 2010-Cd-Domino-€13.99

And so i watch you from afar-And so i watch you from afar-The debut album from this northern irish based post rock outfit on the smalltown america label. The album features some truly thunderous and rocking post rock sounds coming across like the meeting of don caballero, japanese outfits mono or lite and fellow irishmen the redneck manifesto. Its full of intricate guitar based post rock workouts with plenty of fuzzed up explosive moments. Its mostly an album that concentrates the heavier side of post rock with a total emphasis on the word rock. A total sonic blast of weird time sequences and clever intricate guitar work layered over pounding drum passages. Wonderfully exciting stuff. May 2009-Cd-Smalltown america-€15.99

Animal collective-Merriweather post pavillion-Brand new album from animal collective, now on the domino record label. Double vinyl pressing in a gatefold sleeve-Lp-Domino-€15.99

Animal collective-Strawberry jam-The one thing i most love about animal collective albums is the total challenge they offer up to people like me trying to describe it to you, yes its quite bonkers but in a totally hypnotic and catchy way, take a bit of the beach boys smile and add in some syd barret solo material along with lots of analog synth sounds and most likely hundreds of other sound effects, the album opens up with the truly superb peacebone single which is one of the finest pieces of psychedelic electronic pop you will hear all year round, the band seem to have this very special knack of holding all their sounds together with their beach boys likes vocal harmonies whilst all sorts of madness is looping around in the background, sixties wah wah like guitar sounds do battle with squelchy synths and moments of the out there rock of the flaming lips, this is probably their most accessible album to date so far and fans of the likes of arcade fire etc should really give this one a little spin as you will be very very pleasantly surprised, an early contender for weird album of the year so far, double vinyl pressing in gatefold sleeve, september 2007-2lp-Domino-€16.99

Arctic monkeys-Humbug [180 gram vinyl with bonus mp3 download]-The arctic monkeys return with their third album on the domino label. The album was produced by josh homme from queens of the stoneage in the mojave desert and also by james ford in his brooklyn studios. Within seconds of the album opener you can hear the influence of josh homme as he obviously yanked up the guitars in order to make a more rockin album with them. There is definitely a slight shift from the more angular post punk of the first two albums to this one which seems to feature a lot more heavy guitar riff action. Its still very much an arctic monkeys album though, with alex turner still writing some damn fine lyrics, as good as anything thats preceeded. The big addition, for me anyway, is the extra fuzzed up guitar action turning their sound into some great big rumbling rock'n'roll post punk machine. Its still full of angular stop start moments that made the first two albums stand out so much from other bands in this genre and top marks must go to the arctic monkeys for trying something a bit different with their third album, universally known as the difficult third album, though these lads dont seem to have encountered any problems in the quality control stakes. Fans of the first two albums will take a few listens to truly appreciate this one, but its well worth the work and lets be honest most good albums take a bit of time to really sink in properly. Having now made three great albums it pretty obvious these guys are here to stay for quite a while. Pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl and comes in a gatefold sleeve which also features a bonus mp3 download coupon. August 2009-Lp-Domino-€16.99

Beach house-Teen dream [double vinyl with bonus digital download coupon and dvd]-Teen dream is the third album from this baltimore based outfit and the long awaited follow up to their stunning album devotion from 2008. The album was recorded in upstate new york in an old converted church called dreamland and was produced by chris coady [he has worked with the likes of tv on the radio, blonde redhead and yeah yeah yeahs]. It may only be january but this is an early contender already for the most beautiful / lush album of the year so far. The album carries on the folky americana themes of devotion and takes them to a whole new level, its a beautifully loose collection of sounds, full of spooky atmospherics which may have something to do with recording in a church. Its a truly amazing meeting of old and new sounds, rustic slide guitar seemlessly blending with the kind of woozy backwards guitars that my bloody valentine would be proud of. Its downbeat, intimate and truly expansive at the same time with an atmosphere that kind of reminds me a wee bit of mazzy star. If you liked devotion then prepared to be totally blown away by this one. The album comes pressed on double vinyl and is housed in a gatefold sleeve. Also features a free digital download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. The package also comes with a bonus dvd, the dvd features a video for each song on the album, each from a different director. January 2010-Lp-Bella union-€18.99

Briggs, anne-Nottinghamshire tales [180 gram vinyl reissue]-This was the third and last solo ablum from anne briggs. Originally recorded back in 1973 this album was never released at the time as briggs wasnt happy with the album. The album finally got her seal of approval in the early nineties and was released under the name sing a song for you. The album also got a very limited vinyl release on the bo weavil label a few years back but has been out of print since then. This new version on the vinyl lovers label comes pressed on 180 gram vinyl with brief liner notes from briggs describing why she didnt like the album after recording it. In fairness to her the album is a rather beautiful collection of totally rustic folk songs ranging from pure a cappella folk to full band traditional english folk sounds. Great to have this intimate gem back in print and available again. August 2009-Lp-Vinyl lovers-€17.99

Burning star core-Papercuts theater [double vinyl with free mp3 download coupon]-The album features just one long piece broken into four separate movements. The album features a collection of sounds culled from over sixty live performances. Fronted by c spencer yeh and also featuring contributions from robert beatty, jerey lesniak, john rich, mike shiflet, trevor tremaine, lambsbread and mike connelly [hair police]. The album features a collection of harsh droning rock sounds, ambient metal and pure full on avant rock. Its incredibly intense stuff, darkly evil even with hints of everything from merzbow to yellow swans to lightning bolt. Its full of heavily treated guitar feedback, manipulated violin, tribal like percussion and all manner of electronic treatments. Fans of pure noise based avant rock will just love this, fans of melodic pop music definitely wont. The album comes in a heavy card gatefold sleeve and is pressed on double vinyl. Also comes with a free digital download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. March 2010-2lp-No quarter-€18.99

Callahan, bill-Sometimes i wish we were an eagle [aka smog]-The return of one of our all time favourites around here. This is the second album to be released under his own name after several long years recording under the smog moniker. Its pretty much a back to basics classic collection of dark hearted sounds from callahan with elements of both laid back folk and country roots. This album also sees the introduction of lots of lush strings and horn sounds giving it a somewhat more full slightly orchesral feel. A real intimate gem that long time fans will simply adore. April 2009-Cd-Drag city-€13.99

Chequerboard-Dictaphone showreels-6 track mini album on the lazybird label based in dublin, chequerboard is irish based electronic artist john lambert and this is his follow up the excellent album gothica from 2002, it’s a collection of some really beautiful lush electronica, plucked acoustic guitars and glitchy soundscapes, its got the lush sounds of the likes of four tet mixing with the processed glitchy sounds of the likes of fennesz, this comes highly recommended from us, perfect for late nights with the headphones on, november 2005-Cd-Lazybird-€7.50

Chequerboard-Penny black-The second album from this irish based electronic artist john lambert and the follow up to the brilliant gothica from 2002. The album features nine truly beautiful pieces of lush mellow electronica gently blended with the most intricate acoustic guitar picking. If you are a fan of the sounds of four tet or boards of canada then i really cannot recommend this highly enough. Its simply one of the most perfect collections of mellow late night electronica you will find at the moment. Layered over the subtle beats and ambient soundscapes are some truly beautiful intricate guitar picking bordering on spanish flamenco at times. Possibly one of the most perfect irish electronic albums of the year so far. February 2008-Cd-Lazybird-€18.99

Its pretty much an essential purchase for anyone into the history of the jamaican dancehall culture. January 2010-2cd-Soul jazz-€17.99

Duke special-The stage a book and the silver screen [limited edition triple cd box]-A lavish triple cd box set from duke special featuring three literary based projects that he has recorded over the last two years. The silent world of hector mann is an album of songs written by duke special and a host of songwriting colleagues including neil hannon, ed harcourt and matt aqualung hales. The album is based on the story the book of illusions by american novelist paul auster and was recorded by steve albini in chicago. Huckleberry finn is based on an unfinished work by kurt weill about mark twain. The work has never previously been recorded and was given the blessing by the kurt weill foundation. Mother courage and her children is a studio recording of tracks which duke special wrote and sang in 63 performances of the play directed by deborah warner at the national theatre in london. Efterklang-Magic chairs-Brand new album from danish ensemble efterklang, their third full length so far and the first to be released on the 4ad label. Joining the regular troupe of musicians on this recording are peter broderick, heather woods broderick, daniel james, rune fonseca, daniel smith nielsen and frederik teiger. This is probably one of their most song orientated almost pop like albums to date so far, the more post rock like meanderings of previous albums has now pretty much given way to something akin to pure chamber pop at times. Its dramatic and blissful brass led pop music, perfectly laid back but still bursting with emotion. Its decidely kooky [but then what else do you expect from efterklang] but also strangely catchy at the same time. If you liked the recent owen pallett album then you should definitely add this one to your collection straight away. Comes in a lovely card digipack sleeve with a big foldout poster inner sleeve, you can always depend on 4ad for superior packaging. February 2010-Cd-4ad-€13.99

Errors-Come down with me [limited to 300 copies]-Album number two from this epic post rock meets funky electronica outfit signed to the rock action label [run by mogwai]. Its an album of intricate post rock blended with lots of funky beats and lush synth vibes. Sounding at times like battles jamming with either daft punk or the chemical brothers with a bit of air thrown in for good measure. There are still plenty of those mogwai like guitar led moments on the album but this one definitely adds much more of an electro like feel, its almost like some updated post rock take on the space rock sounds of the late seventies. The album is limited to only 300 copies on vinyl and comes in a gatefold sleeve. March 2010-Lp-Rock action-€15.99

Feelies, the-The good earth-The feelies second album from 1986 and the follow up to the truly superb debut crazy rhythms, it took them nearly six years to make this second album. The album was co produced by peter buck from rem, a fan since their early days. The album features a somewhat slightly more rootsy rock feel whilst also retaining plenty of the early almost minimalist like post punk / new wave sounds. Its pretty much another perfect collection of early college rock meets rootsy indie rock sounds with lots of jangly indie guitar sounds included. The album now also comes with five bonus tracks which come on a bonus mp3 download coupon inside the sleeve.-Cd-Domino-€12.99

Field music-Field music measure-Field music are a kind of psychedelic indie pop sounding outfit hailing from sunderland and based around the songwriting skills of brothers peter and david brewis. Peter is also a member of the week that was whilst david also moonlights in school of language. This is their third album to date and the follow up to tones of town from 2007 [also on the memphis industries label]. The album is a wonderfully happy and highly intricate collection of sounds, in spirit they do kind of remind me a bit of the beach boys in the way they can deliver something so infectiously bouncy and musically deft at the same time. With the album clocking in at over 70 minutes you can expect many twists and turns, with some tracks offering up some truly lush orchestral pop whilst others are just perfect guitar driven psyche pop. Its also an album with plenty of complicated post rock like influences, they are one of the few bands i know who can actually turn post rock into something that the kinks would be proud to put their name to. At times its almost like a brief history of rock music from the past with references to the beatles, blue nile, fleetwood mac, the kinks, king crimson, led zeppelin, prince and plenty more inbetween. Sit back and revel in some truly beautiful laid back classic rock music. The album comes as a special edition double cd in a gatefold sleeve with foldout printed inner. February 2010-2cd-Memphis industries-€15.99

Francis, valerie-Slow dynamo-The debut album from this irish based singer songwriter on vf records. Features a delicious collection of woozy late night electronic tinged mellow pop songs. The album was produced by jimmy eadie who has worked with both jape and david kitt in the recent past. Its a beautiful collection of layered electronic pop sounds ala postal service or some of the more recent rumblings from the morr music label coupled with some acoustic based bedroom folk sounds with a somewhat jazz like hint. Put them both together and you end up with one very very accomplished debut album that gently sucks you in. The album features lots of gentle electronic beats, woozy keyboard sounds and the whispered tones of francis voice. May 2009-Cd-Vf records-€13.99

Frightened rabbit-The winter of mixed drinks-The return of this scottish outfit on the fat cat label. The album features the recent single swim until you cant see land. The album features a fairly euphoric like sounding collection of indie rock based tunes. There are hints of the likes of arcade fire or broken social scene but these guys also seem to include bits of intricate post rock and even the odd bit of rustic americana / roots rock. There is something very uplifting about the sounds on the album, the songs seem to build slowly into these massive bursts of fuzzy indie rock with lots of meandering jangly guitar sounds. Comes in a lovely four part foldout card sleeve too. February 2010-Cd-Fat cat-€14.99

Girls-Girls album-'Lust for life', the impeccable, '60s-tinged 'laura' and the surf-rock scuzz-fest 'big bad mean motherf**ker'. Gonjasufi-A sufi and a killer-The debut album from brand new artist gonjasufi on the warp label. Backed by a trio of the west coasts most renowned producers [namely mainframe, flying lotus and the gaslamp killer]. The album features a rather strange and new sounding almost psychedelic take on underground hip hop. At times it sounds like some long lost early seventies psyche folk record, full of middle eastern pop influences before gentle hip hop beats take control. Its probably an album that owes much to the producers too, its full of cleverly worked samples and looped sound effects. With a total of 19 tracks included this one plays more like a compilation of different artists at times, there are even some heavy guitar based tunes in here. Warp seem to always unearth these eclectic genre hopping artists with such ease, no other label does this kind of thing as well. March 2010-Cd-Warp-€13.99

Grizzly bear-Veckatimest [with bonus mp3 download]-Grizzly bear return with a truly stunning new album on the warp label. These guys have been hinting at greatness for quite a while now but this new album reaches a whole new level altogether. The album really benefits for a truly lush production and the addition of big orchestral sounds. They are still a band that vocally remind me of the summer pop sounds of the beach boys but there the comparisons end. Featuring lots of quirky and infectiously catchy laid back pop songs with lots of electric piano and sixties like guitar sounds. Its one of those albums with some many layers that each listen delivers a totally different experience. If a bit of sixties tinged indie pop and four part vocal harmonies are your thing then this could be an early contender for album of the year. Features a bonus mp3 download of the entire album. This version comes pressed on double vinyl and comes with a full mp3 download of the album too. May 2009-Lp-Warp-€17.99

Jape-Ritual-The third solo album from jape aka richie egan who also doubles up as bass player with the redneck manifesto. The album features ten slices of wonderfully laid back electronic pop sounds with one or two more laid back folky based acoustic tunes thrown in. Its got the perfect blend of electronic beats, synth effects and live guitars so as to fall somewhere between blissful summer electronic pop and funky indie rock. Lovers of funky electro pop will love this as will fans of top quality new wave and indie pop. June 2008-Cd-V2-€13.99

Kelleher, patrick-You look cold-A truly superb debut full length from this irish based artist now signed to the osaka label. This one man band has previously released a six track ep on his own label last year. The album is genre hopping collection of sounds mostly based in classic old school bedroom indie lo fi and intimate electronica. Thats just for starters though as kelleher takes in elements of psyche folk, animal collective like psyche pop, can like krautrock experimentalism and some of the ethereal new wave of this mortal coil. As y0u can guess from the wide range of references this is not an easy album to pigeonhole and thats always a good thing with us. There are intimate acoustic folk songs, throbbing analog krautrock and psychedelic electronica sounds going on and its a real treat for music fans that want something just a little bit different. This man is a serious talent and we beg you to try out this album. June 2009-Cd-Osaka-€13.99

Kitt, david-The nightsaver-The return of one of our all time favourite irish artists. Mr kitt sounds like he has gone right back to his two early albums on this new collection featuring a classic stripped down sound complete with programmed beats, chunky keyboards and plenty of hazy hypnotic pop songs. Recorded mostly at home the album has the old familiar intimate kind of bedroom pop feel about it that made us fall in love with his music in the first place. Features ten of his finest songs full of infectious grooves. 2009-Cd-Gold spillin records-€15.99

Legion of two-Riffs-Brand new project fronted by the former decal member alan o boyle and joined by irish based percussionist david lacey. This is an album of both haunting and dreamlike sounds with hints of early godflesh mingling with some lovely ambient shoegazing like vibes. At times it kind of reminds me of a slightly heavier take on the likes of jesu. Sounding like the most evil doom rock transferred to fuzzy analog synths with lots of dreamy shimmering guitar effects. The odd track even delves into some trance like mix of doom rock and synthy prog with some truly evil bass sounds. Its all quite hypnotic and almost dubby when put together featuring the perfect battle between live drums and heavily processed electronic sounds. This is a truly superb collection from two very forward thinking musicians. July 2009-Cd-Planet mu-€12.99

Mccombs, cass-Catacombs-Baltimore based singer songwriter cass mccombs returns with a stunning new collection on the domino label. Following in from his rather beautiful dropping the writ album from 2008 this is another exceptional collection of superbly crafted laid back alt rock songs. Mccombs is both an astute lyric writter and classy guitar picker. The album has a kind of rootsy feel about it without delving too deep into either country or folk. Quite simply the eleven tracks included are faultless from start to finish both lyrically and in particular with his sublime guitar playing. The album has a somewhat bright kind of breezy feel about it featuring a beautifully sparse production which just allows the songs to speak for themselves. Do your record collection a favour and include this album in it. June 2009-Cd-Domino-€12.99

Message from the tribe-An anthology of tribe records 1972 to 1976-The tribe collective was formed in detroit in the early seventies by a group of like minded people using both music and art to fight against the negative forces of high unemployment and civil unrest. Miranda, holly-The magicians private library [limited edition etched vinyl]-The debut album on the xl label from singer songwriter holly miranda. Produced by dave sitek from tv on the radio. The album also features guest appearences from tv on the radio members kyp malone and jaleel bunton. Its an album of kooky and diverse underground pop sounds, one part cat power and one part bjork whilst also taking in something akin to the cocteau twins along the way. Its beautifully haunting at times whilst also delivering up some infectiously catchy tunes, dare i say she is like some modern day indie answer to kate bush. A really lovely collection of hazy alt pop sounds, definitely one for fans of the likes of feist, bat for lashes, bjork etc. Limited edition double vinyl pressing. Comes pressed on two slabs of 180 gram vinyl in a heavy card gatefold sleeve with giant foldout poster inner sleeve. The album features three sides of music and the fourth side is etched. Its got to be mentioned this is one very beautiful package. February 2010-2lp-Xl-€16.99

Mountain goats-The life of the world to come [double vinyl]-The return of the moutain goats with their sixth album for the 4ad label. The band is now pretty much based around long time member john darnielle and he is joined on this album by peter hughes and jon wurster [superchunk]. Owen pallett [final fantasy] provides string arrangements. The album features both a rustic and lush collection of mostly folk based sounds, a very intimate and sombre affair it must be said. Its an album rooted in rustic americana with a couple of tracks reminding me a wee bit of some very early rem. Pressed on double heavyweight 180 gram vinyl and comes in a gatefold sleeve. O rourke, jim-The visitor-Jim o rourke returns with his first solo collection in eight years. The album sees o rourke in totally solo mood and features just one long instrumental track clocking in at just over 38 minutes. The album is being released pretty much as a sequel to his album bad timing from way back in 1999, particularly as it features some really beautiful lenghty passages of steel strung acoustic guitar arrangements. I have recently seen this album described a modern folk symphony and that phrase really does pin down this albums sound in two simple words. The album does have moments harking back to the work of the great john fahey but o rourke also adds in big washes of lush string sounds along with some truly awesome multitracked acoustic guitar sounds, it almost sounds like there could be ten different guitarists working at the same time. O rourke also throws in some passages of beautifully minimal piano which really adds to the overall orchestral feel to the record. I have to say this album really is best enjoyed in just one sitting and the forty or so minutes really do pass rather quickly. Its been a long wait, but in fairness albums like this dont just happen overnight. August 2009-Cd-Drag city-€13.99

Oneida-Rated o [triple cd]-New york based psyche rock outfit return with the second part of their truly awesome thank you parents triptych of releases. The first part the experimental preteen weaponry came out last year on the jag jaguwar label also. This album is a veritable trip through the many different forms of psyche and space rock with so many twists and turns along the way its hard to keep up. The album rather strangely opens up with a slice of pounding scuzzed up techno coming across like the bug with fuzzed up guitars. The following few tracks are simply some of the most sublime kind of stoner psyche rock you are likely to hear all year, dare i say sounding like early hawkwind on even stronger drugs. Its full of pounding almost tribal like drum sounds, scuzzy analog synths and totally fuzzed to the max guitars. Thats just the first of 3 cds now. The second cd is much more straight ahead pounding krautrock like influenced psychedelic rock with more emphasis on the guitar led side of things with lots of heavy stoner rock tangents. The last of the three cds features some truly epic psychedelic rock sounds packed with hypnotic wailing guitars doing battle with squelchy analog synths. This truly is one hell of a mind blowing aural experience, maybe not to everybodys taste but if you want to head off on a totally psychedelic noise experience for an hour or two then you wont find better than oneida for meeting your needs. Comes in a lovely three part foldout sleeve. July 2009-3cd-Jag jaguwar-€12.99

Pallett, owen [final fantasy]-Heartland [comes with bonus digital download coupon]-The artist formerly known as final fantasy returns with his third solo outing to date, he is now recording under his own name due to some stupid legal case taken against him for using the final fantasy name. His first album came out way back in 2005 [has a good home] and was followed by the exceptional second album he poos clouds in 2006. It may be nearly four years since his last album but its fair to say pallett has been busy with other projects in the meantime. Along with touring as a one man band pallett has also provided string arrangements for several bands including grizzly bear, arcade fire, beirut, last shadow puppets and mountain goats. This is his first album to be released on the domino label. This is an album of true orchestral beauty, probably one of the most lush collections your are likely to hear all year round. Known for his superb violin playing this album features what sounds to my ears like a full blown orchestra at times, full of dramatic string and horn bursts. Its an album the flows seamlessy through many genres with such each too. Sometimes you think you could be listening to some modern take on steve reich or phillip glass and before you know it things turn into some kind of indie broadway musical [ala sufjan stevens maybe]. Its highly intricate and joyously catchy at the same time, full of layered string sounds and palletts gentle almost hushed vocal delivery. Its one of those rare albums that comes up with something new each time you listen to it, sometimes classical pop and sometimes just pure classic quirky indie pop. Its got to be said this is something truly original. The album is pressed on double 180 gram vinyl and comes in a lovely heavy card gatefold sleeve. Also comes with a free digital download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. January 2010-2lp-Domino-€15.99

And lcd soundsystem.this is his first album for the rough trade label, having already had several releases through the german label dial records. Its an album of very delicate minimal techno like pop sounds, the kind of thing that fans of the kompakt label will just adore straight away. Its full of heavy dub like sounds, drenched in reverb backed by gentle pulsating beats. There is an almost dreamlike quality to it, if you take away the beats you could almost be listening to either biosphere or pole. You may not think you like minimal dubby techno but this one may make you think again about that. February 2010-Cd-Rough trade-€13.99

Retribution gospel choir-2 [with bonus mp3 download]-Album number two from this rock outfit fronted by alan sparhawk [guitarist / singer with low]. Its the follow up to their self titled debut which came out in 2008 and thieir first for the sub pop label. The band features sparhawk on vocals / guitars, steve garrington on bass and eric pollard on drums. The album was recorded by eric swanson at sacred heart studios in minnesota. This is very much an album that sees sparhawk let loose with the kind of rock based guitar action the really wouldnt work on any of the recordings with low. This is back to basics guitar based rock music, falling somewhere between the slow core sounds of the likes of the red house painters and some of neil youngs crazy horse vibes. Ive got to admit it great to hear this guy let loose with his guitar on this album, its full of fuzzed up distorted sounds and plenty of heavy riff action. The album comes with a full mp3 download of all tracks inside the sleeve. February 2010-Lp-Sub pop-€13.99

Scott-heron, gil-Im new here-The legendary gil scott-heron returns with his first new full length album in thirteen years. Assisted by producer and head honcho of xl recordings richard russell. Scott-heron is probably most famous for his truly legendary track the revolution will not be televised. The album features a total of fifteen tracks spread over 28 minutes, some almost pure spoken word with the barest of background music. The album features several covers including im new here by smog, me and the devil by robert johnson and ill take care of you by bobby bland. Its a beautifully soulful collection of sounds, actually reminds me a little of the massive attack tracks that featured horace andy in the past, gently funky but simply allowing to voice to carry each song. The production it must be said is just beautiful, its all very understated with gentle beats, strings and lush synths going about their business in the background. This album though, is all about this mans truly amazing voice, deep and menacing at tmes, heartfelt and soulful on others. Its a real joy and at only 28 minutes you will just keep hitting the repeat button for more, never has less is more been true. February 2010-Cd-Xl-€16.99

Shearwater-The golden archipelago-The golden archipelago is the third in a trypych of albums including palo santo [2006] and rook [2008]. This time shearwater turn their attention to a portrait of life on islands. The album features another beautifully lush collection of almost orchestral like mellow pop sounds with hints of rootsy americana. At times the album kind of reminds me of the likes of sparklehorse or sixteen horsepower, although these guys deal in a sound slightly more sparse than either of them. Its could almost be described as a slightly more rootsy sparse radiohead blended with the minimalism of the likes of low. A truly haunting and emotionally charged collection of songs. Pressed on heavyweight vinyl and comes in a lovely gatefold sleeve. February 2010-Lp-Matador-€19.99

Sonic youth-The eternal-Having spent years on the geffen label sonic youth return to their indie roots with a new album for the matador label. Produced by john agnello and now featuring ex pavement bass player mark ibold. The album also features artwork by the late great guitarist john fahey. This is definitely an album that will bring much joy to fans of goo and dirty period sonic youth. Its very much a collection of shorter more immediate tracks featuring a host of uptempo grunge like avant rock sounds. To me sonic youth have always been a band with two very distinctive sounds with their earlier albums featuring lots of long rambling avant rock and their later material featuring a more immediate rock sound. The closing ten minute track is the only thing to evoke the sounds of evol or sister whilst the majority of the rest of the album is sonic youth at their grunge rock best. Its a sound very distinctive to sonic youth and within seconds of the opening track you know exactly who you are listening to. They may be getting on in years but when it comes to cutting edge alternative american rock there are not many people that can do it aswell as sonic youth. Its easily up there with goo or dirty as classic sonic youth. Comes in a card gatefold sleeve. June 2009-Cd-Matador-€13.99

Tape and bill wells-Fugue-Vinyl only release of this new mini album from scottish musician bill wells and swedish trio tape. Limited to only 900 copies and comes with a free digital download coupon. Along with his outfit the bill wells trio, bill wells has worked with many artists over the last few years including isobel campbell, mark lanegan and of course appeared on my album of the year from the pastels last year. Tape are a swedish based electronic trio and released the wonderful luminarium album on the thrill jockey label last year. The album features four beautifully mellow pieces of instrumental music based around some gently minimal guitar picking, lush electric piano and of course wells jazz tinged brass playing. The tracks sound like some long lost film soundtrack, at times reminding me a little of the music for betty blue, full of dark atmospheric vibes and stark minimalism. Its definitely one for fans of the minimalist jazz like sounds of bands like bohren and der club of gore. January 2010-Lp-Thrill jockey-€14.99

Tunng-And then we saw land-Brand new album from tunng on the full time hobby label, features the most recent single hustle. This is probably one of their most uptempo and freeflowing albums to date. Its got a much bigger kind of feel about it, still distinctly folk like at times but the scope of sounds on this one really is something new for tunng. As mentioned it is still an album deeply rooted in folk music, both english and american with plenty of laptop electronic trickery still going on too. This album does sound more like a full band effort compared to some of the more intimate previous collections, its almost folk pop like from time to time with the odd moment of something akin to choral folk. March 2010-Lp-Full time hobby-€14.99

Twinkranes-Spektrum theatre snakes-The long awaited debut album from this dublin based three piece finally hits the shelves, courtesy of the twisted nerve label. The album was co produced by voice of the seven woods frontman ricky tomlinson. An album i have to admit has totally blown us away here in the shop and a real late contender for our irish album of the year. On first listen this is a real gem for lovers of all things krautrock but its only after repeated listens that the many many layers and sounds really begin to reveal themselves. It is definitely based in the kind of hypnotic repetitive sounds of seventies krautrock but dig deeper and you will hear bits of space rock, prog, pure psychedelia and even the kind of crazed early electronic trickery of the bbc radiophonic workshop. Featuring a truly propulsive rhythm section laying grooves down for some dr who like sound effects, these guys are not afraid to let loose and totally rock out from time to time too. November 2009-Lp-Twisted nerve-€18.99

Volcano choir-Unmap [featuring bon iver]-Volcano choir is a brand new collaborative project between justin vernon [aka bon iver] and the collection of colonies of bees. This is their debut release for the jag jaguwar label. Bon iver fans should be warned this is a very different collection of sounds compared to his solo release for emma. This is a collection of almost psyche folk based sounds with heaps of added electronic tinkering, coming across like animal collective in a more folky mood. The album features some beautifully abstract almost ambient like passages reminiscent of fennesz meets a bit of four tet. September 2009-Cd-Jagjaguar-€13.99

Whipping boy-Submarine-The debut album from irelands whipping boy, finally available again on cd, this album has been out of print for far too many years, recorded way back in 1991, features 10 cuts of pure raw sounding whipping boy, features safari, beatle, sushi, favourite sister, astronaut blues, bettyclean, buffalo, snow, valentine 69 and submarine, may 2006-Cd-Whipping boy recordings-€13.99

White hinterland-Kairos [with bonus mp3 download coupon]-The second full length album from this outfit fronted by songwriter casey dienel, her previous album phylactery factory came out in 2008 on the dead oceans label aswell. This time she is joined by alexis gideon and shawn w creedon, both adding a much more electronic feel to this collection. The previous collection was a much more haunting folky based affair but this one delves more into a kind of dubby electronic sound, her voice is still the one ingredient that makes the album special though. It almost has a kind of dubby electro pop feel about it, probably best described as ambient synth pop maybe. Its beautifully sparse, haunting and ethereal. The album comes with a free digital download coupon inside the sleeve. March 2010-Lp-Dead oceans-€13.99

Xiu xiu-Dear god i hate myself-Im kind of guessing here but i seem to make it seven full length albums to date from xiu xiu, fronted again on this one by mainman jamie stewart. The album is the first to feature new full time band member angela seo [piano, synth and drum programming]. The album was produced by jamie stewart and greg saunier from deerhoof. Along with helping on production saunier also plays on much of the record as does ches smith [john zorn, terry riley and marc ribot] who provides timpani, conga and moog. John dieterich from deerhoof also joins in on the traditional folk song cumberland gap. The band are even joined by the immaculata catholic school orchestra on stewarts ode the heartbreak and healing [this too shall pass away]. The album features a truly distinctive collection of art pop sounds that could only be xiu xiu from start to finish. Its full of dramatic avant pop sounds with an almost gothic like feel about it. An album of highly intricate sounds with bursts of classical like strings, piano interludes and all manner of electronic trickery. Its damn near impossible to try and put down in words what this one sounds like but i can hear the likes of antony and the johnsons, divine comedy and final fantasy in here [amongst many others]. February 2010-Cd-Kill rock stars-€12.99

The album comes with a free download of all tracks featured on the album. February 2010-Lp-Kill rock stars-€13.99

Yo la tengo-Popular songs-The album opens up with a rather choice slice of orchestral driven psycye rock before hitting their more familiar melodic indie rock with some choice vocals from drummer georgia. For me this album really shows off this bands ability to hop between several different genres with such ease, its no surprise they have been making music since 1986. They are probaly one of the last remaining true american indie rock bands, still featuring the same three members after all these years. The album features a bit of everything from pure fuzzed up classic old style indie rock to some beautifully laid back indie pop, backed by an extended 15 minute psyche rock like jam at the end. Its an album that brings me back to an earlier classic which was and then nothing turned itself inside out from 2000 with its blend of darker late night gems and fuzzy indie rock, right down to the lengthy closing tunes. If you split the album into two distinct halves you get nine blasts of classic yo la tengo and then finishing off with 3 beautifully lengthy jam like tunes. Long time fans will definitely have this one in their list of top five yo la tengo albums and if you are new to this band you probably wont find a better way to introduce yourself to one of the very best indie rock bands on the planet at the moment.
