Road Records new releases August 14th 2009

Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

I’m back after a weeks break, would love to say I was doing something nice for the week but I don’t consider moving house to be too exciting, now I know how bands on tour feel.

Its going to be a busy week then this week, with two weeks to catch up on.

A couple of exclusive singles to start off with this week. Both the Arctic Monkeys and Pastels / Tenniscoats 7” are exclusively only available through independent music stores here in Ireland [kind of a lie as the Arctic Monkeys is also available through Oxfam Ireland shops], so well done to both Domino and Geographic for looking out for the small guys out there. I have to say there are some real gems out this week, its had to know where to start to be honest. I suppose I should kick off with our album of the week which is Jar Reatards new album “Watch Me Fall” and its on special offer for one week only at €12.99 on cd and €14.99 on vinyl. The new Cave Singers album is available at €12.99 on cd for the week. I have to say I’m a bit addicted to the debut album from The XX and if you fancy a bit of 4Ad tinged new wave then look no further. The cd will be available at €12.99 for this week. Instrumental Post Rock fans should pay attention to the new album from Thought Forms out now on the Invada label. Its been seven long years for Cornershop fans but the wait is now over, the new album is now in stock on cd for only €15.99, we should have some vinyl copies by next week. Squarepusher has a new live solo album out this week on Warp Records, €14.99 for one week only. The Animal Collective album Danse Manatee is out now on vinyl, first time ever to be available on vinyl by the way. We have a couple of classic Big Star vinyl albums in stock this week. On the subject of classic vinyl reissues we know have all three of the Galaxie 500 albums in stock, all pressed on lovely heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Some nice old Leonard Cohen album also just in this week on vinyl. The limited edition hand silkscreened vinyl version of the Low Anthem album is finally in stock, this is the version on the Nonesuch label and is slightly different to the Bella Union version we had previously. Our favourite stoner rock outfit Nebula are back with a new album this week. Fans of headphone electronica will simply adore the new album on Type records from On, basically this is an album made by Sylvain Chauveau and Steven Hess which was then digitally manipulated by producer Helge Sten [aka Deathprod]. Nice Irish release this week on the Kaboogie label, a real treat for dubstep / electro fans. Garage rock experts Thee Oh Sees are back with a new collection this week on the ever reliable In The Red label. The new James Yorkston collection of traditional folk songs is now in stock on cd and vinyl [both on special for €12.99 on cd and €14.99 on vinyl]. A couple of old Charley Patton gems in stock this week, including a rather beautiful four lp box set of rare recordings.

I think I am going to have to stop typing as my fingers are now getting sore and there are some more boxes need a movin’.

That’s it from me for this week, have a good weekend !

Cave singers-Welcome joy-The cave singers return with their follow up to their debut invitation songs from 2008 with a brand new album on the matador label. The album features another rather blistering collection of songs blending psyche tinged folk rock and explosive fuzzed up indie rock sounds.its almost like some avant garde take on rootsy rock with lots of psychedelic tangents and heaps of american alt rock influences. This may all sound a bit strange but imagine a blend of later zeppelin, fleetwood mac, violent femmes, arcade fire and the pixies. Quirky and utterly addictive stuff yet again. August 2009-Cd-Matador-€12.99

Cornershop-Judy sucks a lemon for breakfast-Yes indeed you are reading this correctly, cornershop are back with a brand new album and guess what, it sounds like they never went away. Its hard to believe its been seven years since we last heard from them with their album handcream for a generation and its twelve years since the classic brimful of asha single too. The album is simply packed with classic melodic quirky pop sounds, distinctly sounding like cornershop with minutes of the opening track hitting the stereo. If anything these guys have probably added a bit more rock action to their sound with hints of primal screams retro rock sound creeping into the mix from time to time. The break seems to have done them good as this sounds as fresh as anything they have done before. Comes in a card sleeve with foldout poster inner sleeve. August 2009-Cd-Ample play-€15.99

Jay reatard-Watch me fall-Jay reatard returns with his proper full length debut for the matador, he released a truly stunning singles collection for the label last year already. Its a much more melodic and less fuzzed up punk rock collection compared to his debut blood visions from 2006. Its an album that will be pure manna from heaven for lovers of classic old school post punk and punked up new wave sounds. At times you will feel transported way back to the post punk heyday of the late seventies with reatard merging the english sounds of the buzzcocks with the much more american rock vibes of the ramones. Jay lindsey aka reatard has mentioned a lot recently about his love for that classic new zealand post punk sound of bands like the clean or the chills and you can certainly hear a lot of their influence on this album. Whilst the album is more on the melodic post punk side of this lindsey still retains that angry side with his lyrical content and delivery, its full of snarly snotty punk rock. So its a different beast to blood visions but still equally as good in our opinion and a timely reminder just how good post punk can be when its done this well. August 2009-Cd-Matador-€12.99

Squarepusher-Solo electric bass 1-Limited edtion release from squarepusher on the warp label. Limited to only 850 copies. Features a rare solo live recording from cite de la musique in paris from september 2007. Features just tom jenkinson on stage with a bass guitar and amp. The album is released in its truest form exactly as it happened on the night, no overdubs or studio editing afterwards. As you would expect this is a very different collection of sounds compared to the usual squarepusher releases. Its very much an album that would fall into the laid back late night modern jazz genre. There is no doubting this man knows his way around the fretboard of a bass guitar and its sounds like he has managed to cover pretty much every single note on it. At times the album can have an almost flamenco like feel whilst also kind of reminding me of some early durutti column, with lots of jazz overtones. Comes in a card sleeve. August 2009-Cd-Warp-€14.99

Xx, the-Xx-The debut album from this young english based outfit on the xl offshoot label young turks. Its an album of both forward thinking and retro sounding tunes taking its lead from late eighties new wave and totally modernising the sound. Featuring lots of 4ad like shimmering reverb laden guitar sounds, almost four tet like beats, new wave synth sounds, heavily textured electronica and sultry laid back indie pop sounds. Its a fairly tricky one to pin down as its neither new wave nor indie pop, its full of chunky electronic beats which give it a totally modern and quite original twist. Kind of like a less intimate postal service but with lots of added guitars and a dark somewhat gothic like edge. Its definitely one that will appeal to lovers of the old 4ad sound and also the more modern electronic pop vibes of the morr music label. Its one of those albums that just grows on you with each listen. Comes in a lovely cutout card digipack sleeve. August 2009-Cd-Young turks-€12.99

Yorkston, james & the big eyes family players-Folk songs-Scottish folk singer james yorkston teams up with the bit eyes family players again for a new collection of traditional folk songs. Features a collection of traditional brittish and irish folk tunes along with one track from galicia in spain. The album features a perfectly intimate and laid back collection of mainly acoustic based sounds. We all know yorkston has a great love for traditional folk music, right back to his early days with the fence collective, so its no surprise these songs are treated with such great love and respect. The songs sound more like stories put to music which is the great tradition of older folk music. August 2009-Cd-Domino-€12.99

Legion of two-Riffs-Brand new project fronted by the former decal member alan o boyle and joined by irish based percussionist david lacey. This is an album of both haunting and dreamlike sounds with hints of early godflesh mingling with some lovely ambient shoegazing like vibes. At times it kind of reminds me of a slightly heavier take on the likes of jesu. Sounding like the most evil doom rock transferred to fuzzy analog synths with lots of dreamy shimmering guitar effects. The odd track even delves into some trance like mix of doom rock and synthy prog with some truly evil bass sounds. Its all quite hypnotic and almost dubby when put together featuring the perfect battle between live drums and heavily processed electronic sounds. This is a truly superb collection from two very forward thinking musicians. July 2009-Cd-Planet mu-€12.99

Arctic monkeys-Crying lightning [exclusive to indie music stores]-The first taster from their brand new album humbug on the domino label. The cyring lightning was produced by josh homme from queens of the stone and sees the arctic monkeys with one of their most guitar driven heavier post punk songs to date. Its a slightly slower sound than normal so i can only assume mr homme had a influence on their overall mood and added a bit of his stoner rock influence to the mix. The flip side features a cover of nick caves red right hand. The single comes with a bonus coupon with a download of both tracks featured. This single is exclusively only available in indie music stores in ireland. August 2009-7"-Domino-€4.50

Reissue on the ardent label.-Lp-Ardent records-€13.99

Blackshaw, james-The glass bead game [with bonus free cd copy]-Now heres a man never happy to make the same album twice and one of our favourite modern guitar instrumentalists. In the past blackshaw has made some truly stunning solo twelve string acoustic guitar albums and on this new collection he now also incorporates strings, woodwind, vocals and piano. Its still a very familiar sound with his truly hypnotic rapid paced guitar picking central to the album. With the added instruments on this one though there is a much fuller lush overall feel and truly stunning it is too. There is still plenty of that john fahey like guitar sound with lots of eastern folk like vibes going on too. This is probably one of the most perfect collections of instrumental folk music so far this year. This vinyl pressing features one less track compared to the cd version, however there is a full version of the album on cd inside the sleeve. August 2009-Lp-Young gods-€19.99

Boggs, dock-False hearted lovers blues-A beautiful collection of early recordings from the much underated banjo player dock boggs. The album features a selection of tracks recorded between 1927 and 1929. They have been beautifully restored by the monk label, fast becomming one of our favourite reissue specialists around here. Features some of the finest banjo led country blues sounds you are likely to hear from this period of american folk music. August 2009-Lp-Monk-€13.99

Branded, the-Shout and holler-The second album from this swedish based retro garage rock outfit fronted by ex vocalist with thee exciters lee tea. These guys deal in a brand of bluesy garage rock that calls to mind the likes of the troggs with maybe bo diddley playing guitar in the background. Its a very sleazy groove laden brand of garage rock they deal in with a distinctly blues feel to it. Kind of reminds me of the rolling stones snotty little kid brothers in fact. Highly authentic stuff and it totally rocks too. August 2009-Cd-Dirty water-€13.99

Briggs, anne-Nottinghamshire tales [180 gram vinyl reissue]-This was the third and last solo ablum from anne briggs. Originally recorded back in 1973 this album was never released at the time as briggs wasnt happy with the album. The album finally got her seal of approval in the early nineties and was released under the name sing a song for you. The album also got a very limited vinyl release on the bo weavil label a few years back but has been out of print since then. This new version on the vinyl lovers label comes pressed on 180 gram vinyl with brief liner notes from briggs describing why she didnt like the album after recording it. In fairness to her the album is a rather beautiful collection of totally rustic folk songs ranging from pure a cappella folk to full band traditional english folk sounds. Great to have this intimate gem back in print and available again. August 2009-Lp-Vinyl lovers-€17.99

Byrds, the-Fifth dimension-Originally released in 1966. The album has now been given the high quality sundazed reissue treatment. Comes with all the original artwork and is pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

Dylan, bob-John wesley harding-Classic early bob dylan album from way back in 1967. Features charles mccoy on bass, kenny buttrey on drum and pete drake on steel guitar. It was probably one of dylans earliest forays into the more country based sounds particularly with the addition of the steel guitar in the lineup.-Lp-Sundazed-€18.99

Earth-Earth 2 special low frequency version-Earths 3 track opus from 1993 on the sub pop label, the album has sadly been out of print on vinyl for too many years now, features the 15 minute seven angels, the 27 minute teeth of lions rule the divine and the 30 minute like gold and faceted, features dylan carlson on guitars and dave harwell on bass, double vinyl reissue, june 2006-2lp-Sub pop-€15.99

Fenn o berg-Magic and return-The editions mego label have finally gathered these two hard to find albums into one very handy little packaged and then added lots of bonus material from the rare japanese editions. The album features a trio of modern electronic glitch wizards in action together. The fenn is christian fennesz, the o is jim o rourke and the berg is mego boss peter rehberg aka pita. The package features the albums the magic of fenn o berg and the return of fenn o berg together for the first time. The first album features a collection of live recordings from various shows around the world recorded between 1998 and 1998 whilst the second one is taken from just two shows in 2001 performed at the centre pompidou and at a viennese jazz club. The first album is pretty much an entirely live improvised collection with all three using laptop manipulation to create some truly harsh glitch based soundscapes. The second collection features a much more coherent selection of sounds as they were all subsequently edited down in the studio afterwards. Pure heaven for lovers of abstract glitch electronica. Comes in a lovely card foldout sleeve. June 2009-2cd-Editions mego-€26.99

Flying lotus-La ep [part three]-The third and last part in these ultra limited releases on the warp label from flying lotus. Fucked up-Hidden world-Their debut album from back in 2006 on the jade tree label is back in print again at last. This canadian based almost prog punk like outfit are joined by special guest from final fantasy, alexisonfire and arcade fire. Its fair to say this album is deeply rooted in early post hardcore sounds but these guys are more than happy to delve into everything from krautrock to prog when the mood hits them, which is something that has always made them stand out from the crowd. Its like the clever mans punk rock really. 2009-Cd-Jade tree-€13.99

Probably one of the finest collections of blissed out melancholic slowcore ever recorded. August 2009-Lp-20 20 20-€23.99

Galaxie 500-This is our music-The third and final album from one of the very finest blissed out slowcore bands of all time. Gatsby-The sweet science-12 track ablum on the hardluck records label. Debut album from this dublin four piece. Twelve tracks of well crafted and soulful indie pop with occasional inflections of loping country rock. August 2009.-Cd-Hardluck records-€9.99

Hired hands-Marie antoinette-The debut single from this new dublin based indie pop 0utfit. Its a lovely piece of folky indie pop with the added bonus of lots of lush strings and clarinet. It kind of reminds me of belle and sebastian with the added instrumentation of the divine comedy. Also features o child on the flip side. The single also comes with a bonus mp3 coupon featuring a free download of both tracks along with a bonus track mole in the ground thrown in for good measure. June 2009-7"-Any other city-€4.99

Low anthem-Oh my god charlie darwin [limited edition screen printed sleeve]-The second full length album from the low anthem. The album features a rather beautiful collection of laid back rootsy folk sounds and the odd bit of full on barroom rootsy rock n roll. Its a hauntingly intimate collection of mostly acoustic based sounds with some lovely slide guitar and fiddle action. The album has a lovely rustic feel about it with some gentle country vibes comparable to the likes of whiskeytown and the alt country scene that followed them. Its also got hints of the likes of red house painters, my morning jacket and even elliott smith. Its one of those rare quiet gems thats both perfectly sombre and strangely uplifting at the same time. This version on the nonesuch label comes in a hand silkscreened sleeve. The album also comes packaged with a full version of the album on cd inside the sleeve. August 2009-Lp-Nonesuch-€21.99

Nebula-Heavy psyche-Fronted by former fu manchu guitarist eddie glass, nebula return with a brand new psyche rock opus on the tee pee label. Glass is joined by tom davies on bass and rob oswald on drums. Its pretty much another truly storming collection of stoner rock sounds with this one also delving into the murky worlds of trippy psyche rock and even prog. The album kind of harks back to the heavy trippy sounds of early kyuss with tons of meandering guitar driven jams and some truly awesome guitar solo workouts. Glass shows a bit of a softer side from time to time with some passages calling to mind something more akin to early sabbath meets the a bit of zeppelin. On-Your naked ghost comes back at night-Whilst the name may not be that familiar to some of you out there, on is basically a collaborative project between sylvain chauveau and steven hess. But before you get all excited they simply provided the source material for this record which is pretty much a new album from ambient producer helge sten aka deathprod. Sten was given the original source material by chauveau and hess which he then worked his darkly evil magic upon. The end result is a stunning collection of slow moving and darkly evil ambient sounds calling the mind the icy soundscapes of the likes of christian fennesz with the bass heavy drone effects of biosphere. Its an album that really is best appreciated on headphones with so much happening deep down in the mix. Its a truly haunting collection of dark ambient sounds for lovers of all things type records and maybe even the droning sounds of the kranky label. August 2009-Cd-Type-€17.99

Tartufi-Nests of waves and wire-San franciscan duo lynne angel and brian gorman team up with producer tim green for this wonderfully skewed collection on the southern label. The album immediately hits me as some kind of meandering post rock take on the psyche pop sounds of the likes of animal collective. The album features lots of intricate guitar work blended behind some truly joyous multi tracked vocal sounds. Its quite a sound for just two people with the vocals at times coming across like some psychedelic folk choir. Musically the album is a beautifully sprawling collection of everything from post rock to psyche folk to scuzzy indie rock. June 2009-Cd-Southern records-€17.99

Thee oh sees-Help-Another in the red records offering of typically high quality garage energy and melody. Featuring john dwyer of coachwhips and the hospitals. This collection of twisted sixties surf rock with a primitive reverby attack has a more focussed sound than the aforementioned bands. World is shaking-Cubanismo from the congo [1954 to 1955]-An exceptional collection of rare sounds from the congo courtesy of the always reliable honest jons label. These are the guys that brought us the stunning london is the place for me compilations too. The album is centred around a brand new fusion of sounds from the congo in the mid fifties as ex pats started to return with all these latin american imported 78s. As local bands began to incorporate these latin rhythms into their own sound this whole new sound was born. Its kind of a similar story to the days in jamaica when soul music was first introduced to early reggae recording artists. As ever with honest jons the album comes with a detailed booklet packed with information on the artists and this ever evolving sound. The album artwork also features some stunning old black and white photos from dancehalls back in the day. August 2009-Cd-Honest jons-€18.99

A hawk and a hacksaw-Deliverance [deluxe edition]-A hawk and a hacksaw return with their fourth album with the ever reliable hun hangar ensemble in tow again. The core duo of jeremy barnes and heather trost are in truly fine form on this mostly uptempo collection of eastern european folk sounds. The album features a collection of rearranged traditional eastern european folk songs along with a couple of compositions by trost and barnes themselves. Having previously backed up beirut this pair really know their way around some rather blistering folk sounds. Its a real fun filled collection of gypsy folk songs featuring some superb brass and acoustic instrumentation. Deluxe first edition which comes in a card gatefold sleeve with foldout poster inside. June 2009-Cd-The leaf label-€17.99

Akron family-Set em wild set em free-Akron family return with a brand new album on the crammed discs label. Now stripped down to a core three piece with the departure of regular member ryan vanderhoof. On first listen this is by far their most accessable album to date with the album taking on a somewhat country tinged americana vibe for the first few tracks. There is still plenty of their trademark rambling psyche folk in here along with a couple of truly explosive psyche rock moments building up into some superbly crazed avant garde southern rock meets pure white noise. What i love about these guys is that you simply cannot predict what is coming next as tracks can go from gentle acoustic guitar picking to full on wall of sound noise at the drop of a hat. As eccentric and brilliant as ever. June 2009-Cd-Crammed discs-€18.99

Ashby, dorothy-The rubaiyat of dorothy ashby-This album was originally released by the cadet label way back in 1970 and is still regarded as one of ashbys finest recordings, the album features ashby on both harp and koto along with lenny druss on flute and oboe, stu katz on vibes, fred katz on kalimba, cliff davis on sax and cash mccall on guitar, the album was recorded by richard evans in chicago in late 1969, ashby has a very distinctive sound due to her being one of very few harpists working in the jazz scene of the late sixties, this album also sees ashby provide vocals on a couple of tracks giving the album a somewhat soulful feel, the jazzy instrumentals have a real hypnotic feel to them particularly on tracks like for some we loved when ashby moves over to the koto instrument, she also moves into some really lush lounge sounds on tracks likes dust when her beautiful voices comes to the fore again, this reissue comes in the original sleeve and features the original liner notes from yvonne daniels, 2007-Lp-Cadet records-€13.99

Feeney, julie-Pages-The second album from irish based julie feeney. The follow up to the choice music prize winning debut album 13 songs from 2005. The album was performed and produced almost entirely by feeney herself. The album also features a full orchestra conducted by julie. This is probably one of the more original collections from an irish artist that we have heard all year so far. The album has the lush orchestal feel of the last joanna newsom album scored by van dyke parks with lots of dramatic bursts and at times an almost broadway like feel. Add in a bit of the kooky off kilter pop sounds of kate bush and you are only getting close. Feeney uses the orchestral and brass sounds to simply accentuate her quirky vocal delivery. The album is like some modern classical pop record with moments bordering on some old musicals and plenty more inbetween. A most pleasing piece of pure originality. June 2009-Cd-Mittens-€13.99

Isis-Wavering radiant-The fourth full length studio album from isis. Produced by joe barresi who has worked with mammoth acts like tool, queens of the stoneage, melvins, kyuss and tool in the past. Adam jones from tool also guests on guitar on two tracks. These guys continue to baffle the critics with their strange prog rock metal hybrid sound with this album also taking a fair share of dream like post rock along the way. Whilst their roots are definitely in stoner metal isis drop lots of synth heavy prog influences during the long instrumental passages in their songs. With big thunderous metal riffs battling against dreamy shoegazing sounds they still continue to break the boundaries of what metal bands are allowed to do these days. May 2009-Cd-Conspiracy-€17.99

Its a kind of minimalist jazz mainly based around percussion which sees moondog using all manner of strange instruments. A real gem for collectors of strange outsider music. Oneida-Rated o [triple vinyl with bonus mp3 download]-New york based psyche rock outfit return with the second part of their truly awesome thank you parents triptych of releases. The first part the experimental preteen weaponry came out last year on the jag jaguwar label also. This album is a veritable trip through the many different forms of psyche and space rock with so many twists and turns along the way its hard to keep up. The album rather strangely opens up with a slice of pounding scuzzed up techno coming across like the bug with fuzzed up guitars. The following few tracks are simply some of the most sublime kind of stoner psyche rock you are likely to hear all year, dare i say sounding like early hawkwind on even stronger drugs. Its full of pounding almost tribal like drum sounds, scuzzy analog synths and totally fuzzed to the max guitars. Thats just the first of 3 lps now. The second lp is much more straight ahead pounding krautrock like influenced psychedelic rock with more emphasis on the guitar led side of things with lots of heavy stoner rock tangents. The last of the three lps features some truly epic psychedelic rock sounds packed with hypnotic wailing guitars doing battle with squelchy analog synths. This truly is one hell of a mind blowing aural experience, maybe not to everybodys taste but if you want to head off on a totally psychedelic noise experience for an hour or two then you wont find better than oneida for meeting your needs. Limited edition double vinyl pressing with detailed liner notes and a heavy card gatefold sleeve. August 2008-2lp-Numero group-€23.99

Specials, the-The specials-Their truly seminal debut album now reissued on 180 gram vinyl. Originally released in 1979 on the chrysalis label. The album was produced by none other than elvis costello and features a message to you rudy, do the dog, its up to you, nite klub, doesnt make it alright, concrete jungle, too hot, monkey man, dawning of a new era, blank expression, stupid marriage, too much too young, gangsters, little bitch and youre wondering now. Features the classic specials lineup of terry hall, jerry dammers, lynval thompson, neville staples, roddy radiation, horace gentleman and john bradbury. The ablum also featured the legendary horn sounds of jamaican born rico rodriguez.-Lp-Chrysalis-€21.99

Speck mountain-Some sweet relief-The return of one of our favourite bands around here at the moment and their first for the carrot top label. The previous album summer above came out last year on the peace frog label. Its another delicious slice of modern folkiness with hints of the classic ethereal sounds of mazzy star and the rambling slowcore of either galaxy 500 or low. What these guys add to truly stand out from the crowd is the stunning voice of marie claire balabanian sounding like hope sandoval with a slight country twang. It really is the voice of an angel as far as we are concerned. The album features some haunting slow building electric folk sounds with lots of shimmering guitar sounds and lovely warm organ vibes. If you liked the first one then be prepared to be totally blown away by this. June 2009-Cd-Carrot top-€16.99

Sunn o-Monoliths and dimensions-Stephen o malley and greg anderson are joined by regular contributors attila csihar, oren ambarchi and earths dylan carlson on this their seventh album. More surprising though is the addition of brass, reed, strings and a viennese female choir alongside composer eyving kang and one time sun ra and john coltrane contributor julian priester. The album features four lengthy pieces spread over a total of 54 minutes. The opening track is simply classic dirge like doom metal that will be pure heaven to long time fans. Coming as more of a surprise may be the second track opening up with the angelic voices of a full choir giving off a sound that i can only describe as church metal. Its uplifting and utterly evil at the same time. The closing track reminds me slightly more of the twangy guitar of the last few earth albums with lots of added brass. June 2009-Cd-Southern lord-€17.99

Surf creature-Volume three-A collection of sixteen classic instrumental garage surf songs. Features tracks by the starfires, the majestics, craig calhill and the offbeats, varitones, aki aelong, mysterions, newport nomads, trademarks, the hustlers, mickey aversa, atilla and the huns, five more, the fugitives, the fender iv and the bonnavills. Compiled by the romulan label, the same people that brought us the wonderful frolic diner compilations.-Lp-Romulan-€13.99

Talking heads-77 [180 gram vinyl reissue]-This classic from talking heads was originally released in 1977, hence the title i suppose. The album was released on the sire label and now comes reissued by rhino records on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl. Comes with all the original sleeve artwork. Features uh oh love comes to town, new feeling, tentative decisions, happy day, who is it, no compasion, the book i read, dont worry about the government, first week last week carefree, psycho killer and pulled up. Features tina weymouth, jerry harrison, david byrne and chris frantz. Also comes with the original foldout inner sleeve with lyrics. June 2009-Lp-Rhino-€17.99

Viola, fredo-The turn [limited edition cd and dvd]-The debut album from freda viola is propably one of the strangest pop records of the year so far with a sound as he describes himself as the beach boys meets sigur ros. Normally i dont trust artists own descriptions but i have to say this one is totally spot on this time. Its very much an album dedicated to the sound of the human voice with viola using multiple versions of his own voice more as an instrument than something that simply sings words. Its an album that ranges in sound from pure psychedelic electronic pop to some beautifully rhythmic ambient like pieces. There are elements of the psyche pop sounds of animal collective or grizzly bear but this is a much more mellow laid back approach. The ablum also comes with a bonus eight track dvd. June 2009-2cd-Because music-€18.99

Waits, tom-Franks wild years-Reissue of this gem of a tom waits album originally released way back in 1987 on the island label. The album features hang on st christopher, straight to the top, blow wind blow, temptation, innocent when you dream, ill be gone, yesterday is here, please wake me up, franks theme, more than rain, way down in the hole, straight to the top, ill take new york, telephone call from istanbul, cold cold ground, train song and innocent when you dream. 2008-Lp-Island-€16.99

Walker, scott-Scott 2-Scott walkers second solo album gets a well deserved reissue on the ever reliable four men with beards label. Comes in a perfect replica sleeve too. Features four walker originals along with covers of tim hardins black sheep boy, three jacques brels tracks and windows of the world by bacharach and david. The album also features his first ever top 20 solo hit jackie. May 2008-Lp-4 men with beards-€19.99

Wavves-Wavvves-Wavves return with a blistering new collection of the most fuzzed up garage rock you are likely to hear all year round. The album, without the fuzz, kind of reminds of the mighty sounds of the pixies meets yo la tengo in a slightly garage rock style. What wavves then do to what is actually quite a catchy collection of songs is feed absolutely everything through the biggest fuzzbox imagineable. The end result is like some totally lo fi bedroom take on the beach boys meets the pixies recorded onto a cheap dictaphone cassette. After a few listens the noise becomes less obvious and you realise there are some truly awesome indie rock songs hidden underneath. Its kind of like hearing psychocandy by the jesus and mary chain all over again. Fans of yo la tengo and the pixies should give this one a bit of time. This version on the bella union label also comes with two extra bonus tracks. July 2009-Cd-Bella union-€17.99

Wooden shjips-Dos-Awesome new collection of psychedelic rock sounds from wooden shjips on the holy mountain label. This is one of those rare timeless collections that sounds like it could have been made at any stage in the last 30 years or so. This band take some of the finest rock ingredients and mash them all up into their own very distinctive sounds. Krautrock fans will love this one for its hypnotic grooves, psyche rock fans will love the swirling guitar sound effects, stoner rock fans will find plenty in here to keep them happy and lovers of the drug induced fuzzed up space rock of the likes of spacemen 3 will instantly fall in love. Features five lengthy guitar and synth heavy slices of pure sludge. One of the finest psyche rock releases of the year so far. May 2009-Cd-Holy mountain-€16.99
