Road Records weekly newsletter April 23rd 2010

Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

Sorry to say we are still recovering mentally from the preparations for Record Store Day last week and can I begin by thanking you all out there for making it such a wonderful day. We had such a blast in our suits and it really was an amazing day overall. We made lots of new friends and thankfully got to know a few people all over again, lots of people who haven’t been in to see in months. Thank you to all the bands for contributing to our wonderful cd compilation and extra special thanks to Adrian Crowley, Patrick Kelleher and Autumn Owls, who very kindly stepped in at the last minute to replace Villagers who were unfortunately stuck in Belgium.

Anyway, as you can see its Friday afternoon and I am already a day late with the newsletter so I will keep the into down to the bare minimum this week and just let the music do the talking.
We have a brand new guest reviewer spot started this week with our album of the week, so thanks to Billy Lyons for contributing and if you think you might be interested in contributing a review in the future just send me an email here and let me know a bit about what music you particularly like. That way we can pick people who we think will like the albums we are picking out each week, we are not looking for any major literary contributions just people writing about music who are passionate about what they listen to. Anyway, I will give you more details next week on this one.

Have yourself a good weekend and hopefully we will be back on track as normal from next week again.

Adios !

Fall, the-Your future our clutter-With the opening scowl to the childlike tampering of electronics welcome to album no. 28 (?) From the fall. Your future our clutter is the fall at their popiest & eclectic best a constant fuzz in some distant future. 9 tracks of mark e .smith banter backed by a rhythm section at ease in the fall environment. The pure garage rhythm of cowboy george or y.f.o.c. / slippy floor to the gentle guitar licks of weather report 2 to the moog noodlings appearing over every track there is a sense of urgency & freedom not seen in the fall for many a year. With occasional nods to their own past the fall push forward and have created their best album in 10/15 years. Truly a classic fall album to revisit many a time. Besides any album that contains the line ‘i fry chicken with a trowel’ deserves at least 15quid from your pocket you skinny rats.

Bonnie prince billy-The wonder show of the world-Will oldham returns with his brand new album on the domino label, joined again by longtime collaborator emmett kelly [lie down in the light, the letting go and beware]. The album also features guest spots from shahzad ismaily and phil elverum [mt eerie / microphones]. This man has been making some of the finest modern rustic folk / country music under many different names going way back to 1992 when he was using the name palace [palace brothers & palace music]. Having then gone on to release several albums under his own name will oldham, he does like to confuse fans with his many alter egos, this here album is his 12th or 13th [we think] as bonnie prince billy. Will oldham is an artist that seems to love recording albums with new bands each time he enters a studio so its always a bit of a surprise when a new one arrives, you just never know what sounds are going to hit you. This new album is definitely one of his most stripped down and sparse sounding records in quite a while, if fact most of it sounds like it was just him and emmett kelly in the studio. Its nice to see him back in this almost solo role, the songs are given lots of room to express themselves. The album features a rather stunning collection of rustic country tinged modern folk music, i suppose it would be fair to say there are hints of everything from johnny cash to early dylan in here whilst also taking a bit or a tour around the more traditional sounds of early american folk music from times past. This man does have a sound all his own though, there is no mistaking will oldham with anybody else, his voice is probably one of the most distinctive sounds we know of. This man just doesnt make bad records, they are always either really good or superb and we think this is one of his best in recent years. April 2010-Cd-Domino-€12.99

Redneck manifesto-Friendship-Brand new album from one of irelands very finest instrumental post rock outfits. Its hard to believe this is their first album in nearly six years now, the last album i am brazil was released way back in 2004, for some reason it just doesnt seem that long. The album was recorded in blackbox studios in france and is probably their first to really incorporate the keyboard sounds of fifth member neil o connor [aka somadrone]. Its definitely an album much more based on krautrock like rhythms, its still jam packed with intricate post rock guitar interplay but this one has a real motorik like groove provided by some sublime drum and bass action. If anything this album sounds more like the redneck manifesto jamming with can or neu, the lush analog synth sounds really do add a whole new dimension to their already rather complex sound. This truly is pure heaven for lovers of either intricate post rock or trance like krautrock from one of the finest in ireland [if not worldwide]. It may not have the same raw edge of their first album but i think you will find this is up there as one of their finest, if not their best so far. The album comes in a lovely embossed digipack sleeve. March 2010-Cd-The richter collective-€13.99

Kelleher, patrick-You look colder [the remixes]-Brand new remix project from patrick kelleher on the osaka label. The album features a collection of remixes from his truly wonderful album you look cold from 2009. The album features remixes from skinny wolves, thread pulls, catscars, toymonger, hunter gatherer, david kitt, jape, fucktotem, hulk, the booklovers, legion of two, school tour and katie kim. Its a truly superb collection of remixes, as eclectic as you could find. April 2010-Cd-Osaka-€12.99

Malachai-Ugly side of love-Originally released in 2009 on the invada label [run by geoff barrow from portishead] under their original name malakai. I must say this is an album that really gets better and better each time i listen to it, there is so much going on in the background that its hard to catch it all the first time. Its very much an album deeply rooted in a sixties psyche rock kind of sound but these guys totally update that sound with tons of clever samples and weird sound effects. My geoff barrow is credited as executive producer on the album and you can kind of hear a little bit of the portishead influence going on from time to time, particularly with some of the looping guitar sounds and sampled drum effects. Its kooky as hell and can be quite bonkers at times but thats really the charm of this record. Its quite the psychedelic trip and really doesnt sound like anything else i have heard before, its not often you can say that about a new album. April 2010-Cd-Double six-€12.99

Mi ami-Steal your face-This is their first full length for the thrill jockey label, their previous album was on the quarterstick label. Mi ami features daniel martin mccormick and jacob long from dischord outfit black eyes along with drummer damon palermo. Jacob also play in food for animals and daniel has recently released a solo album under the name sex worker. The album was recorded pretty much live in the studio in an attempt to replicate their live shows. Its an album of totally trippy no wave sounds, full of fuzzed up guitars, almost tribal like beats and tons of psyche rock touches. Imagine a more psychedelic take on the early sounds of sonic youth fed through a massive echo chamber. April 2010-Cd-Thrill jockey-€13.99

Ritter, josh-So runs the world away-So runs the world away is the brand new album from josh ritter on the irish label independent records. This is the fifth full length studio album from the idaho native. The album was recorded over a 15 month period at the great north sound society in maine, with extra additional recording at saltlands studios in brooklyn. So runs the world away continues ritter’s longtime collaboration with producer and keyboard player sam kassirer. Additionally the album sees the return of ritters core touring lineup of zack hickman, austin nevins and liam hurley. The album features another superb collection of somewhat upbeat rootsy americana, folk and country tinged sounds. It’s a beautifully melodic collection of sounds, infused with plenty of catchy rootsy pop like vibes, if anything its probably one of his most summery sounding collections in his five album career so far. The album comes in a lovely card digipack sleeve with full colour booklet featuring lyrics. April 2010-Cd-Independent records-€12.99

She and him-Volume two [with download coupon]-No prizes for guessing this is the second album from she and him, a band featuring the songwriting skills of none other than m ward and the truly beautiful voice of actress zooey deschanel. The album features eleven brand new tracks along with covers of ridin in my car and gonna get along without you now. Anyone familiar with this pairs first album will fall in love with this one from the very first note, it pretty much carries on from where they left us in 2008. Its another dreamy collection of folk like pop sounds taking in a bit of everything from sixties motown to seventies pop sounds of bands like the carpenters. The album has a lovely kind of country twang about it too with lots of superb slide guitar action going on throughout. Basically if you like anything from sixties motown to the carpenters to the mamas and papas with a slight country twist then i cant recommend this highly enough. I can see this one being a real candidate for the soundtrack to the summer months. The album comes with a bonus mp3 download coupon featuring all tracks from the vinyl. April 2010-Lp-Double six-€16.99

Tallest man on earth-The wild hunt-The second album from swedens kristian matsson, his first for the dead oceans label, his previous album the shallow grave came on out swedish indie label gravitation. It would be hard to review this album without at least mentioning the early sounds of bob dylan, his voice and delivery really are quite reminiscent of a young dylan in his prime. The album has a lovely rustic stripped down kind of feel about, sounds like it could easily have been recorded live on his front porch at times. Its a lovely collection of rustic old time folk sounds with maybe just a hint of the intimate folk vibes of the likes of bon iver, though this collection is certainly a much more uptempo foot stomping affair. The album comes with a bonus download coupon featuring all tracks from the vinyl to download. April 2010-Lp-Dead oceans-€13.99

Trans am-Thing-Thing is the ninth studio album from trans am and is the long awaited follow up to sex and change from 2007. I am very glad to report that not much has changed in the space / psyche rock world of trans am in the three years since their last album, i must say they are one of the few bands that i never want to change their sound, what they do they do perfectly so leave it alone. This is another truly excellent collection of totally spaced out synth rock sounds, full of seventies prog and psyche rock influences. They have always reminded me of a more avant rock take on the meeting of kraftwerk and hawkwind. Its the perfect meeting of scuzzy keyboards and math rock like guitar sounds. Its both forward thinking and utterly retro at the same time, nobody does this kind of thing quite as well as trans am. April 2010-Cd-Thrill jockey-€13.99

Urick, jason-Fussing and fighting-Brand new limited edition vinyl only release from baltimore based musician jason urick on the thrill jockey label. The album follows on from his rather super husbands album, also on thrill jockey from earlier this year. The album features three brand new pieces along with a remix from matthew papich of ecstatic sunshine. The album is limited to only 500 copies and comes with two different sleeves with a photographic print on the front. The album features 44 minutes of the most blissed out dubby space rock you are likely to hear all year round, sounding like some cross between seventies ambient space rock and the glitchy dub of bands like pole etc. Its features lots of synth led ambient soundscapes drenched in all manner of reverb and extended echo effects. There are hints of the glacial like sounds of artists like biosphere in here with lots of scratchy / glitchy sound effects given a slightly dubby feel. April 2010-Lp-Thrill jockey-€14.99

Ash-A to z [volume one]-Volume one features the first thirteen tracks from their series of limited edition vinyl releases. The album collects the tracks from the letter a to the letter m. There are also five bonus tracks which are return of white rabbit, coming around again, the creeps, ctrl alt del adn do you feel it. This version comes in a deluxe hardback book style sleeve and also features a bonus dvd with a 50 minute a-z tour documentary called a is for ash. April 2010-2cd-Atomic heart records-€18.99

Autechre-Oversteps [limited double vinyl box set]-Autechre return with their tenth studio album to date and dare i say it but this is probably one of their most melodic and accessible albums so far. Hard to believe these guys have been making albums since 1993, yes indeed incunabula came out that long ago. Its also been two years since their last album quaristice [also on the warp label]. Its not often you can use the words beautiful and autechre in the same sentence but this album truly is a thing of beauty, it may be an album that will divide longtime fans as its definitely one of their more mellow collections. Its still full of crunchy harsh sounds, darkly evil even, but there is definitely a warmth to this collection that hasn't really appeared before. I may be going mad here but i think i can even hear live instruments on this album, a harp or harpsichord seems to appear on the third and fourth track at least, adding a somewhat oriental like feel to proceedings. As ever with any autechre album its must be said the production of this record is truly sublime, with so much going on there is still real clarity to what they do, every sound is given its own little space in the mix. Its probably one of their most ambient collection but still superb nonetheless. Limited edition double vinyl box set, pressed on two heavy slabs of 180 gram vinyl. The album comes housed in a big heavy card box and also features a double sided poster inside its own sleeve. March 2010-2lp-Warp-€38.00

Beak-Recordings-Beak were formed in january 2009 by three bristol musicians namely billy fuller, matt williams and geoff barrow. Billy fuller was a member of fuzz against funk and has played with massive attack, robert plant and malakai in the past also. Matt williams records under the name team brick. Geoff barrow you will probably all know as one of the founding members of portishead. The band recorded the album under strick guidelines, all recordings were to be made live in one room with no overdubs, only using edits to create arrangements. The sounds on the album are very much something that will appeal to all fans of seventies krautrock and futuristic spacerock. There is plenty in here to excite fans of the likes of can or neu with lots of pulsating motorik rock led by old style analog keyboards. There is also plenty of a more modern post rock kind of vibe going on from time to time, at times reminscent of mogwai going all krautrock. Its pretty awesome stuff, sounding like some long lost gem from the late seventies. Limited edition double vinyl pressing in a gatefold sleeve. April 2010-2lp-Invada-€21.99

Bellajane-No strings attached-Bellajane are a brand new four piece outfit from dublin featuring sarah jane on vocals, shane holly on guitar, graham heaney on bass and dennis cassidy on drums. This is their debut four track ep and features marionette, egg shells, wait and man overboard. The ep features some really catchy and slightly kooky piano led indie pop sounds with a little bit of joan as policewoman and a little bit of regina spektor. Its a little jazzy, a little sultry and very very catchy indeed. April 2010-Cds-Own label-€4.99

Big pink-Tonight-Brand new single from the big pink, taken from their album a brief history of love. Limited to only 1000 copies the single also features a version of sweet dreams by beyonce on the flip side. Its a classic slice of euphoric souding synth led new wave. The single comes housed in a foldout poster style sleeve and comes with a very strange elastic band contraption, you can choose what you want to do with it but my advise is be careful. April 2010-7"-4ad-€4.50

Cary, tristram-Its time for tristan cary-Tristram cary was born in oxford in 1925 and went on to be dubbed the father of electronic music. He set up the uk's first electronic music studio [londons ems] and worked for the bbc on many occasions. In 1955 he was commissioned to write the music for the new ealing movie the ladykillers and probably most famously was the man who provided the sound effects for the daleks when they first appeared in dr who in 1963. This album collects 32 rare pieces from the vaults, many of these are being released for the very first time. The pieces were written for various uses including exhibitions, sculpture and television. Pure heaven for collectors of weird early electronica and library recordings. April 2010-Cd-Trunk-€17.99

In 1955 he was commissioned to write the music for the new ealing movie the ladykillers and probably most famously was the man who provided the sound effects for the daleks when they first appeared in dr who in 1963. Cole, ollie-We albatri [with bonus download coupon]-The debut solo album from the former singer with irish band turn. The album features a collection of brand new tunes written and arranged by cole himself. It really must be said this is a very different beast to his former band turn in pretty much every way possible. Its an album featuring some beautifully delicate ballads and lots of beatlesesque rock n roll sounds. Its full of infectiously catchy almost rootsy like pop sounds with even a couple of hints of the beach boys summery pop thrown in. This limited edition vinyl pressing also comes with a free bonus download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. April 2010-Lp-Emi-€17.99

Continuous battle of order-Pattern seekers-The continuous battle of order are a new belfast based two piece featuring craig kearney [drums and stuff] and hornby [guitars and stuff], the band are formed from the ashes of we are knives. This is their first full length release for the dublin based label the richter collective. The album features a collection of intricate and highly explosive avant rock sounds taking in bits of shouty post hardcore and math rock along the way. Think of the intricate almost motorik like avant rock of either shellac or don cabalerro given a full on hardcore makeover. April 2010-Cd-The richter collective-€10.99

Couse, dave-Alonewalk-The first album from dave couse in almost five years, alonewalk is his second to be released by the irish label 1969 records. The album features a collection of brand new tracks written specifically on piano and features dave in collaboration with former a house guitarist fergal bunbury and regular cellist rike solder. The album also features guest vocals from cathal couglan on the track good friday. The album is a beautiful downbeat collection of mostly piano led offbeat ballads full of heartfelt emotion and the very distinctive voice of dave couse. The album kind of reminds me a little of a more stripped down early beatles meets a subdued take on the surf pop of the beach boys. Its got to be said the voice of mr couse really suits this new sound, in fact its an album that really allows him to express his full vocal range. Really really beautiful stuff. April 2010-Cd-1969 records-€15.99

Daredevil christopher wright, the-In deference to a broken back-Brand new european version of the debut album from the daredevil christopher wright, now comes with a download coupon for two extra bonus tracks. The album was mixed by fellow wisconsin native justin vernon [bon iver]. The band are based around songwriter jon sunde and also features his brother jason and fellow eau claire [wisconsin] resident jesse edgington. The album features a rather lovely collection of mellow almost psyche folk like chamber pop sounds, think sufjan stevens jamming with the beach boys for starters. Its the kind of quirky alt pop that i can also see fans of the likes of the decemberists going wild for too, its full of dramatic almost orchestral like sounds at times. April 2010-Cd-Almost musique-€13.99

Dylan, bob-Highway 61 revisited-Reissue of this classic bob dylan album from 1965 on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Comes in the original sleeve with liner notes by dylan himself on the back. The album features like a rolling stone, tombstone blues, it takes a lot to laugh it takes a train to cry, from a buick 6, ballad of a thin man, queen jane approximately, highway 61 revisited, just like tom thumbs blues and desolation row. The band features michael bloomfield, alan kooper, paul griffin, bobby gregg, harvey goldstein, charley mccoy, frank owens and russ savakus. 2009-Lp-Sundazed-€16.99

Factory floor-Untitled-Very very limited edition vinyl only pressing on the blast first offshoot label blast first petite. The ep comes pressed on clear 10 inch vinyl [only 2000 in total] and also comes packaged with a dvd featuring the film solid sound. Its kind of ironic that their name features the word factory as this band really do remind me of some of the very early [and classic] sounds of the legendary factory label. The opening track actually sounds like some heavenly blend of early joy division and new order, right down to the martin hannett like quality of the production. These guys are far from mere imitators though and by the second track things take a wonderful turn towards some kind of industrial meets minimal techno sound, still full of eighties synth based influences but also something totally modern at the same time. Fans of synth based post punk, electro and early industrial sounds will simply adore this real gem. April 2010-10"-Blast first petite-€9.99

[album reviewed by billy lyons - http://www.mixcloud.com/thesilentradioshow/]

Fallon, bp-Fame #9-Spoken word instructional series volume one. Released through jack whites new label third man records. The limited edition 7 inch only release features the spoken word track fame #9 by bp fallon on side one. The flip side features a rather unusual concept of two tracks playing pretty much at the same time. You can switch the balance on you stereo and listen to a bp fallon interview by jack white or else the track i believe in elvis presley. The track also features guitar from jack white. Obviously you can play both tracks at the same time and that works out pretty nicely too. 2010-7"-Thirdman records-€7.99

Feather, jonjo-Is or ok-The debut album from this 21 year old leeds based singer songwriter on the numb tongue label. The album was recorded in an old converted barn and sees jonjo play pretty much everything on the album. Its a lovely fuzzed up lo fi collection of bedroom indie rock sounds with hints of everything from early beck to the likes of sebadoh or pavement. Its got a little bit of a psyche rock kind of vibe going on with the more uptempo tracks coming across like a stoner rock take on the jesus and mary chain, strange and all as that may sound. April 2010-Cd-Numb tongue-€10.99

Filthy pedro and the carthaginians-Filthy pedro and the carthaginians-Angleseys filthy pedro [aka simon parry] was one of the founding members of the antifolk uk club / movement along with tom mayne [david cronenbergs wife]. This here is his debut full length album and features many cohorts from the regular antifolk club they run in london [since 2004]. The album is a totally rawkus blend of sixties like garage pop and rustic alt folk sounds. It actually kind of reminds of me billy childish jamming with the likes of jeffrey lewis, its both garage rock and off kilter folk at the same time. Its got a lovely sparse almost live in the studio like feel about, you almost feel like you are sitting on his front porch with him as soon as the first note hits the stereo. April 2010-Cd-Blang-€10.99

Followers of otis-And those to come hereafter-The debut full length album from this galway based four piece outfit. The album features a lovely collection of gentle acoustic based folk pop sounds with little hints of the summer pop of the likes of the beach boys. There is also a little bit of an old time blues kind of influence hovering around on the odd track which sees some sweet electric guitar action. I can also hear a bit of a kinks like influence on one or two tracks. April 2010-Cd-Own label-€6.99

Fuck buttons-Olympians-Limited edition three track ep from fuck buttons. The ep features the original version of olympians taken from their most recent album tarot sport along with two brand new remixes. The first remix spacman vs the olympians comes from j spaceman [jason pierce from spiritualized] and the second white hot remix comes courtesy of alan vega from suicide. The single is pressed on limited red vinyl and comes with a bonus download coupon featuring all three tracks. Clocking in at just under eleven minutes this is probably one of my favourite tracks from the album tarot sport, its a truly blissful slice of chillout ambient music, slowly building into a great big crescendo. Its no surprise they asked j spaceman to remix the track as it really does remind me of a more electronic based take on the hypnotic sounds of spiritualized in particular. April 2010-12"-Atp recordings-€8.99

Gorillaz-Plastic beach [cd and dvd set]-What originally began as a side project for all people involved has now turned into a fully fledged band, this being their third full length album so far. March 2010-2cd-Parlophone-€26.99

Herbert, matthew-One one-The first in a series of three albums to be released this year by matthew herbert on the accidental label. This one will be followed by one club and then one pig. This is an entirely solo album [hence the title] and was written, performed, recorded and produced by herbert on his own. As you would imagine this is probably one of his most intimate records to date so far, fans of his big band albums will probably think they are listening to a different artist. Each of the ten tracks is named after a different city, each one with its own distinctive sound. The album kind of ranges in sound from jazzy tinged singer songwriter vibes to gently pulsating electronic pop. Comes in a lovely deluxe hardback book style sleeve. April 2010-Cd-Accidental-€15.99

Holly golightly and the brokeoffs-Medicine county-Holly golightly and lawyer dave return with their third album together as holly golightly and the brokeoffs. The album features twelve brand new tracks and a cover of murder in my mind by wreckless eric. This is definitely an album that sees holly golightly move even further away from the fuzzy sixties like garage rock sound of old and enter a much more traditional country and folk sound. Some of the more traditional old time country sounds remind me a little of the classic duets of johnny cash and wife june carter, its pure rocking country with a real good time feel about it. This is an album very much based in a traditional folk and blues sound, it totally harks back to the early days of country and country roots rock. April 2010-Cd-Damaged goods-€13.99

Internal tulips, the-Mislead into a field by a deformed deer-Brand new outfit on the planet mu label featuring brad laner and alex graham. Laner has released material previously under the names electric company and personal electronics whilst graham has recorded under the name lexaunculpt. It must be said this is as far from the normal kind of sound you would expect from planet mu as possible. The album features a really beautiful collection of psyche tinged electronic pop sounds, falling somewhere between the beach boys like vibes of animal collective and the much more folk like sounds of fleet foxes. Its a beautifully constructed album, held together with lots of scratchy field recordings and samples giving it a somewhat fennesz like feel at times. If quirky electronic pop is your thing then this one will be manna from heaven. Its also got to be said if we were giving out awards for album title of the week then these guys are walking away with it. April 2010-Cd-Planet mu-€17.99

Jaguar love-Hologram jams-Jaguar love features cody votolato and johnny whitney formerly of blood brothers. This is their second full length album, their first for the fat possum label, their previous album take me to the sea came out on the matador label back in 2008. Its a really fuzzed up meeting of old school shouty indie rock and scuzzy keyboard led electro rock, sounds at times like a bunch of school kids trying to play rave music on their guitars. Its like old school indie rock backed by a casio drum machine. April 2010-Cd-Fat possum-€16.99

Jawbox-For your own special sweetheart-Reissue of their classic album from way back in 1994. The album now comes with 3 extra bonus tracks taken from their savoury ep. The album also comes with a digital download coupon featuring all tracks from the record. The album has now been lovingly remastered by none other than bob weston of shellac fame. At the time of its original release this was the album that divided many longtime fans, it was their first album for the atlantic label having released two album previously on the dischord label. This was the third album to be released from one of the finest post punk / hardcore outfits, fronted by the now legendary [in my little world anyway] jay robbins. April 2010-Lp-De soto records-€14.99

Johannsson, johann-And in the endless pause there came the sound of bees-Brand new collection from modern classical composer johann johannsson on the type label. The album was composed by johannsson as a soundtrack for mark crastes award winning animated film varmints. There really is only one person around at the moment that can do this kind of neo classical meets glitchy electronica with such truly beautiful end results. The album is probably one of most dramatic pieces to date, even featuring a choir on some tracks. Its a truly amazing piece of orchestral music, it must be said this one definitely leans much more towards the strings keeping the digital treatments to a bare minimum. The album ranges from some harold budd like piano minimalism to some truly incredible bursts of widescreen orchestration, it sounds like johannsson has used a full orchestra on this one. I have to say this is probably one of his finest collections to date. March 2010-Cd-Type-€15.99

Johnson, robert-King of the delta blues singers [the complete recordings]-Limited edition three lp box set. All pressed on high quality 140 gram virgin vinyl. The album compiles pretty much everything this man ever recorded including all the alternate versions that appeared on the double cd compilation on columbia records a few years ago. This is the first time these tracks have all been compiled on vinyl in one complete set, some of the tracks did appear on the columbia reissues a few years back but its the first time for the alternate versions to be included too. The three albums come presented in a really lovely heavy card outer box. The box features a total of 41 tracks. April 2010-3lp-Doxy-€60.00

Kelleher, patrick-You look colder [the remixes]-Brand new remix project from patrick kelleher on the osaka label.

Kid 606-Songs about fucking steve albini-This is probably one of the most downbeat, dare i say ambient, collections i have heard from kid 606 in quite a long time. Its far removed from the head melting full on noise that he is probably best known for. The album is pretty much entirely beatless, created using old analog source material. The album features nine rather lengthy tracks, clocking in at just over 72 minutes, each one with its own distinctive sound ranging from the purely ambient to sounds more akin to early krautrock minimalism. I never thought i would see the day when i could use the words beautiful and ambient in a kid 606 review, but i have now. April 2010-Cd-Important records-€15.99

Last tycoons, the-The last tycoons-The debut album on irish based label the firstborn is dead recordings [home to the mighty stef]. The last tycoons are a five piece dublin based outfit doing a fine line in fuzzed up bluesy rock n roll. Sounding at times like a tom waits fronted rolling stones, the album is full of guitar heavy classic blues rock with plenty of old school southern rock influences thrown in. April 2010-Cd-The firstborn is dead-€9.99

Los chicos-We sound amazing but we look like shit-Six piece garage rock outfit from madrid on the dirty water label. The band are joined by some very special guests on this collection including mike chandler [the raunch hands] and steve greenfield [the fleshtones]. Youve got to love the dirty water label, you can also guarantee they will dish up some quality garage rock sounds with every new collection, regardless of whether you heard of the band before or not. These guys serve up some quality sixties like garage rock with lots of cheesy organs sounds and plenty of detroit soul influences along the way. Kind of reminds me of the dirtbombs jamming with the blues brothers. April 2010-Cd-Dirty water club-€12.99

Ma rainey-Those dogs of mine-Ma rainey began recording for the paramount label in 1923, she was to become known as the mother of the blues, she was also one of the very first blues artists to record for the label. She began her singing career around 1896 in vaudeville and minstrel show, she was a fairly colourful character, shocking audiences with her odd lyrics and performances which at the time were deemed to be beyond the limits of decency for some. This album on the superb monk label compiles 19 of her classic recordings, made between december 1923 and august 1924. As ever with the monk label the tracks have been beautifully cleaned up for this vinyl only release and come on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. April 2010-Lp-Monk-€12.99

The album comes packaged with a deluxe 32 page full colour booklet. The album also comes with a bonus live dvd featuring the full extended show, which includes one extra track not featured on the cd itself. The album features some of the most dramatic and at times explosive instrumental post rock sounds you are likely to hear this side of godspeed you black emperor. The band mono have been making some of the finest intricate post rock for many years now but this one really sees them raise the bar with the inclusion of a full orchestra really given their sound a brand new dimension. With all the strings included on this album it hards not to find comparisons to the earlier sounds of godspeed, but dare i state the obvious and say there is also a beautiful orchestral element to the album that really makes it stand out as something altogether new. April 2010-2cd-Temporary residence-€21.99

Mr fogg-Moving parts-The debut album from electronic artist mr fogg, co produced by longtime bjork collaborator valgeir sigurosson and recorded in iceland. The album features a pulsating collection of electronic pop sounds, full of eighties electro pop influences and totally modern sounding at the same time. Its kind of reminds me a little at times of the likes of lali puna or schneider tm but with a ton of added electro pop in the mix. You can definitely hear the influence of producer valgeir sigurosson in most of the tracks, there is a sound not too far away from the more recent releases by bjork. April 2010-Cd-Kicking ink-€11.99

Murder-Songs from the dark side of the soul-Another storming collection from the ever wonderful trikont label, germanys oldest independent label, celebrating 33 years of releases this year. Its another in their wonderful series of themed releases, this one obviously concentrating on songs about murder. Its a collection that covers so many genres that its pretty hard to find any particular section to stick it in to. There is everything from hillbilly bands to blues to jugbands, tin pan alley, jazz, bluegrass and calypso in here, it like your very own themed radio show all in one package. The album features tracks from jimmie rodgers, ethel waters, sonny boy williamson, lord executor, billy boy arnold, wilmouth houdini and his humming birds, roosevelt sykes, memphis minnie, bessie smith and her blue boys, wade mainer and zeke morris, blind boy fuller, ant idy harper and the coon creek girls, honeyboy, little walter and his jukes, louis armstrong with louis jordan and his tympany five, champion jack dupree, the stanley brothers, archibald, henry thomas, gb grayson and henry whitter, billie holiday, lonnie johnson and the demore brothers. April 2010-Cd-Trikont-€17.99

This vinyl pressing comes with a free mp3 download coupon featuring all copies from the album. The album also comes in a lovely gatefold sleeve. April 2010-Lp-The richter collective-€14.99

Reinhardt, jonas-Powers of audition-The follow up to his self titled album from 2008, also on the ever reliable kranky label. It would be fair to say this album owes a huge debt to all things seventies krautrock and space rock. Its an album featuring some lovely synth based ambient sounds, at times bordering on the motorik sounds of early krautrock [ala cluster]. Its also an album that fans of the likes of the dreamy space rock sounds of tangerine dream will instantly fall in love with. Its definitely not your normal drone based sounds that kranky seem to love and a nice surprise it is too. Definitely one for fans of early post rock, krautrock and ambient synth sounds. April 2010-Lp-Kranky-€19.99

Rx bandits-Mandala-Rx bandits return with their first new album since and the battle begun from 2006. Its an album of ever changing moods, definitely deeply rooted in some of the earlier sounds of seventies psyche and prog rock whilst also taking in elements of angry post punk and little hints of intricate post rock. Its an album that can burst into moments of dual guitar action prog rock right in the middle of something more akin to a post punk take on the mars volta. Its definitely an album that will appeal to fans of the likes of mars volta and possibly even the more recent rumblings from stadium rockers muse. April 2010-Cd-Sargent house-€14.99

Its got hints of psychedelic folk rock and even the odd bit of old time country thrown in. Think of my morning jacket fronted by pj harvey with fleet foxes in tow. April 2010-Cd-Distiller records-€14.99

Ted leo and the pharmacists-The brutalist bricks-New jersey rock outfit ted leo and the pharmacists are back with their fourth album and their first for the matador label. Its another album of infectiously catchy alt rock sounds, once again managing to bridge the gap between melodic post hardcore and classic american roots rock. Its probably one of their most melodic catchy collections to date, leaving his slightly punk roots behind for a sound more akin to the likes of the hold steady at times. April 2010-Cd-Matador-€15.99

Comes with a bonus download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. April 2010-Lp-Matador-€13.99

Two door cinema club-Tourist history-The debut album from this brand new northern irish based three piece, released on the highly respected kitsune label. The band were recently named as one of the fifteen acts on the highly respected bbc soundpoll. From the opening bar of the first track there is no denying that these guys have set out to release a quality collection of modern pop music blending indie, punk funk, electronic disco and blissful electro pop. Its as catchy as anything you are going to hear all year round with bits of phoenix, air, lcd soundsystem and plenty more in the melting pot. Its soulful, funky and ever so slightly rocking all at the same time. Limited editon white vinyl pressing. April 2010-Lp-Kitsune-€24.99

Vermin poets-Poets of england-Brand new project from the now legendary billy childish on the damaged goods label. The band is fronted by neil palmer [guitar / vocals] and also features juju claudius aka nurse julie [drums] and wolf howard [drums]. Childish himself can be found on bass and backing vocals. The album features a very melodic and catchy collection of sixties garage rock tinged post punk sounds. Its kind of like a more raw sounding kinks or the jam, much less of a sixties garage rock sound compared to most of his previous works. Its full of melodic choppy guitar led post punk sounds full of fuzzed up grit and plenty of catchy melodies. Its still distinctly billy childish sounding all the same. April 2010-Lp-Damaged goods-€12.99

Voice of the seven thunders-Voice of the seven thunders [limited to only 1000 numbered copies]-Brand new project from rick tomlinson, formerly known as voice of the seven woods [twisted nerve]. The band features long time collaborator chris walmsley on drums and rory gibson on bass, so its pretty much voice of the seven woods with a new name and it must also be added, a totally brand new sound. Whilst his previous collections have been on the hypnotic psyche folk side of things this new album is pure electric psychedelic rock, full of wailing guitar solo action. It seems the band just plugged in all their electric guitars and let loose in the studios without any prior rehearsal of the tracks. What came out is some truly hypnotic psyche rock with hints of middle eastern folk, hendrix like guitar solo action. Try to imagine if hendrix and john fahey were one person, then this is what he would have come out with. Its truly blistering stuff with just the odd break for a moment of acoustic trance like folk picking. This limited edition vinyl pressing is limited to only 1000 numbered copies and comes with a bonus mp3 download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. April 2010-Lp-Tchantinler recordings-€23.99

We the people-Too much noise [limited edition yellow vinyl]-A rather excellent collection of ultra rare singles from we the people on the sundazed label. The album is pressed on limited yellow vinyl and comes with liner notes from jeff jarema. The album compiles three very early singles the band cut for the west coast based challenge label in 1966. The tracks have all been sourced from the original analog masters and now also come with a selection of previously unreleased material recorded for the label at the same time. The band were to sign with the rca label the following year, hence why some of this material has never been released before. Its must be said this stuff definitely comes from the top shelf of sixties garage rock sounds, infused with lots of psychedelic leanings and just a hint of garage soul. April 2010-Lp-Sundazed-€18.99

This vinyl pressing comes with a free mp3 download coupon featuring all copies from the album. The album also comes in a lovely gatefold sleeve. April 2010-Lp-The richter collective-€14.99

African scream contest-Raw and psychedelic afro sounds from benin and togo [various artists]-I have to say this analog africa label is rapidly becomming one of my favourite labels around at the moment, with regards to seventies african soul and funk that is. This is a truly blinding collection of totally raw soul and funk sounds recorded in the seventies, most of the artists hail from benin with just a couple featuring from togo. It would be hard not to mention the likes of james brown as an influence on the sounds of this album but these bands have a much more raw almost live like feel about them. The sounds are definitely deeply rooted in american soul / funk but when played by a bunch of african big bands the sounds then become something very very original. Its all very uptempo and quite rawkus, a real dream come true for collectors of classic seventies funk. The album comes packaged in a lovely card box and features a rather stunning 44 page full colour booklet with lots of detailed liner notes and some truly awesome photos from back in the day. 2009-Cd-Analog africa-€19.99

Angus and julia stone-Down the way-The third studio album from this australian born brother and sister duo. Its probably their most sparse sounding collection to date, its a much more stripped down folk based affair compared to their two previous releases. Its a really beautiful blend of totally sparse acoustic folk and slighty more rootsy country tinged mellow pop. Its got some lovely touches of classic nashville twang at times, with lots of pedal steel guitar action [im such a sucker for that instrument]. March 2010-Cd-Flock music-€13.99

Animal collective-Strawberry jam-The one thing i most love about animal collective albums is the total challenge they offer up to people like me trying to describe it to you, yes its quite bonkers but in a totally hypnotic and catchy way, take a bit of the beach boys smile and add in some syd barret solo material along with lots of analog synth sounds and most likely hundreds of other sound effects, the album opens up with the truly superb peacebone single which is one of the finest pieces of psychedelic electronic pop you will hear all year round, the band seem to have this very special knack of holding all their sounds together with their beach boys likes vocal harmonies whilst all sorts of madness is looping around in the background, sixties wah wah like guitar sounds do battle with squelchy synths and moments of the out there rock of the flaming lips, this is probably their most accessible album to date so far and fans of the likes of arcade fire etc should really give this one a little spin as you will be very very pleasantly surprised, an early contender for weird album of the year so far, september 2007-Cd-Domino-€11.99

Astatke, mulatu-Ethio jazz [featuring fekade amde maskal]-Mulatu astatke is widely regarded as one of the leading lights of ethiopian jazz both old and modern. This collection was originally part of the legendary ethiopiques series and now gets a well deserved vinyl reissue. The album features nine very laid back pieces of african jazz and afro beat. The tracks featured here were originally released between 1969 and 1974. May 2008-Lp-L arome-€16.99

Astatke, mulatu-Mulatu of ethiopia-This album was originally released in 1972 on the worthy record label, mulutu is an ethiopian born sax player and has features quite a lot on the outstanding ethiopiques compilations, the sounds are deeply rooted in early sixties jazz and jazzy blues but with lots of laid back afro funk influences, features mulatu, mascaram setaba, dewel, kulunmanqueleshi, kasalefkut hulu, munaye and chifara, american reissue which comes in the original sleeve-Lp-Worthy records-€13.99

At last an atlas and paul o reilly-Ships leaving-Yet another beautifully presented release on the irish based label slow loris. The cd comes in a very beautiful card foldout sleeve with illustration by greg o brien. The album features five tracks from both artists. The first half of the album features at last an atlas aka greg o brien from dublin based two piece the hollows. Its features five beautifully intimate tracks using hushed vocals over washes of delicate organ and electronic sounds. At times it kind of reminds me of early grandaddy with a somewhat more lo fi bedroom feel. A perfect dreamlike headphone listen. Singer songwriter paul o reilly takes over the second half with his initimate folk sounds falling somewhere between elliott smith and nick drake. His five tracks features some truly gorgeous acoustic fingerpicking layered behind the most delicate brittle vocals. This is modern folk music at its very finest i have to say. These limited edition cds wont last very long in stock so you have been warned. April 2009-Cd-Slow loris-€9.99

Autechre-Oversteps-Autechre return with their tenth studio album to date and dare i say it but this is probably one of their most melodic and accessible albums so far. The album comes in a lovely four part foldout card sleeve. March 2010-Cd-Warp-€13.99

Bats-Cruel sea scientist-The debut five track mini album from this new irish based outfit on the armed ambitions organised ideas label who have also released top quality albums by adebisi shank, vimanas and terrordactyl. The album is a blend of old school post hardcore ala no means no with a bit of the sleazy sludge rock of early birthday party and even jesus lizard. Then throw in a bit of the explosive and intricate sounds of moden post rock. A noisy and explosive collection of sounds that dips its feet into both old school punk rock and intricate metal edged sounds. January 2008-Cd-Armed ambitions organised ideas-€9.99

2009-Cd-Invada-€14.99

Besnard lakes-The besnard lakes are the roaring night-The besnard lakes finally return after a three year hiatus with the long awaited follow up to the besnard lakes are the dark horse. The band were originally formed in 2001 by montreal based husband and wife pairing jace lasek and olga goreas, they released their previous album on the jag jaguwar label aswell, their first collection [volume one] was on the english label earworm way back in 2005. This is an album of true epic beauty sounding at times like a more rootsy rock take on shoegazing fronted by the beach boys. Its has to be said straight away though, that there is much more going on here than just a few simple comparisons, this is an album of truly expansive sounds. In fact, i cant think of many albums that make me think of fleetwood mac and my bloody valentine at the same time. Its got hints of seventies rock, both of the rootsy variety [ala neil young] and the more melodic [dare i say elo] with plenty of hefty guitar solo workouts thrown in. What this pair do though is take all those ingredients and make something both retro and totally original sounding, utterly infectious at times whilst also not afraid to rock out too. There are also moments that remind me of the blissful intimacy of the likes of mazzy star or even low with lots of hazy reverb drenched guitar sounds. They have hinted at greatness with the previous two albums but i really think they have achieved it with this new collection. March 2010-Cd-Jag jaguwar-€11.99

Bloch, emit-Dictaphones volume one-This is probably about as rustic as modern folk music can get without actually getting alan lomax to come around your house with his portable recorder. The album was recorded by emit bloch on an old sony cassette dictaphone recorder, hence the title i suppose. This is pure old style rustic country folk music, coming across like the spirit of hank williams inside the body of early bob dylan. Its as lo fi as folk music can get and to be honest its all the better for it too, its basically just one man and his guitar lashing through sixteen slices of old time country folk. If you want some authentic old time country music then this is about as good as it gets these days. April 2010-Cd-One little indian-€12.99

Bonnie prince billy and the picket line-Funtown comedown-Limited edition vinyl only release from bonnie prince billy [will oldham] and backing band the picket line. The band features oscar lee riley parsons on guitar, dob dixon on electric guitar, johathan kempf on mandolin, cheyenne mize on fiddle, danny kiely on double bass and bradly reinstedler on banjo. The album features a selection of bonnie prince billy originals, a few from the picket line and a cover of the merle haggard classic rambling fever. The album was recorded live to a small audience of friends, its a lovely rustic feelgood collection of tracks with a somewhat raw old time folk kind of feel. Its really does sound like these guys had a lot of fun recording this album with oldham sounding in particularly joyous mood. January 2010-Lp-Sea note-€15.99

Boothe, ken-Youre no good-Features 12 classic soulful reggae tracks from one of the smoothest vocalists of all time, produced by bunny lee and compiled by the attack label, features youre no good, satamasagana, not for sale, artibella, aint that loving you, memories by the score, duke of earl, its gonna take a miracle, ive got the power, the train is coming, come running back and just want to say hello, october 2006-Lp-Attack gold-€13.99

Broadcast and the focus group-Broadcast and the focus group investigate witch cults of the radio age-Broadcast return with a unique psychedelic collaborative mini album with renowned graphic and musical artist julian house [aka the focus group]. Julian house is also one of the co founders of the ghost box label. The album features a total of 23 short pieces of beautifully abstract electronica, try to imagine a more psychedelic sounding radiophonic workshop with elements of early english psyche folk. Its almost sounds like a soundtrack to some trippy seventies english sci fi movie. Its full of old analog synth sounds, haunting vocals and all manner of weird studio sound effects. 2009-Cd-Warp-€10.99

Brown, james-Its a mother-A classic james brown album from way back in 1969 gets a well deserved vinyl reissue. Originally released on the polydor label the album comes in a perfect replica sleeve featuring liner notes on the back from hal neely. The album features mother popcorn [part one], mother popcorn [part two], mashed potato popcorn [part one], mashed potato popcorn [part two], popcorn with feeling, the little groove maker me [part one], the little groove maker me [part two], any day now, if i ruled the world, youre still out of sight and top of the stack.-Lp-Polydor-€13.99

Chequerboard-Penny black-The second album from this irish based electronic artist john lambert and the follow up to the brilliant gothica from 2002. The album features nine truly beautiful pieces of lush mellow electronica gently blended with the most intricate acoustic guitar picking. If you are a fan of the sounds of four tet or boards of canada then i really cannot recommend this highly enough. Its simply one of the most perfect collections of mellow late night electronica you will find at the moment. Layered over the subtle beats and ambient soundscapes are some truly beautiful intricate guitar picking bordering on spanish flamenco at times. Possibly one of the most perfect irish electronic albums of the year so far. February 2008-Cd-Lazybird-€18.99

Childish, billy-Archive from 1959 [the billy childish story]-51 track compilation celebrating the rather lengthy career of billy childish. The album goes right back to his first band the pop rivets which he started in 1977. Along with his own solo career childish has been in some truly seminal garage rock and punk outfits throughout the years and this collection features some of the top cuts from those bands. Unlike the sub pop collection from a few years back this album just concentrates on music, so no poetry or spoken word here. The album features many tracks that have been out of print for years now and a couple of previously unreleased gems thrown in too. Features tracks from the buff medways, the mbes, the milkshakes, thee headcoats, the pop rivets, thee mighty caesars, jack ketch and the crowmen, kyra, the chatham singers, billy childish and the singing lions, the delmonas and billy childish solo. This man is probably one of the most important figures on the english garage rock and punk scene since the late seventies, a man who has always stayed true to his beliefs regardless of any trends. A truly superb overview of a very very prolific individual. July 2009-2cd-Damaged goods-€18.99

Cloudeater-Debris-Limited edition two track mini album from this new [to me anyway] irish noise / doom rock outfit. The band features ad on guitars, vocals, electronics and om on guitars, vocals, electroncs and the cd is limited to 50 hand numbered copies. Comes in card sleeve with two piece of printed plastic inside, they actually look like giant photographic negatives. The album features just two tracks spread out over 27 thunderous minutes. This is going to be pure heaven for all you fans of noise and doom rock out there, it sounds like something that merzbow and sunn o would come up with in a studio together. Its a darkly evil mass of low end noise, it actually reminds me a little of nadja but even more haunting and visceral. It is truly awesome stuff, the second track in particular, a real noisefest for the ears. April 2010-Cd-Own label-€3.99

Cold cave-Love comes close-Matador reissue the debut album by cold cave, the first pressings on the heartworm label and long sold out now. The band features wesley eisold, caralee mcelroy [ex xiu xiu], dominick fernow [prurient] and sarah lipstate [parts and labor]. The album features a big throbbing selection of dark wave like electro sounds with plenty of nods towards the gothic like rumblings of joy division, the cure and even very early new order. Its full of darkly sombre synth led sounds, maybe with a touch of early depeche mode in there somewhere. November 2009-Cd-Matador-€16.99

Cold waves and minimal electronics-Volume one-A compilation of underground cold wave / minimal wave sounds put together by new yorks wierd records founder pieter schoolwerth and joe daniel from angular records. The album chronicles the secret underground cult genres of cold wave and minimal wave, which originated in continental europe between 1981 and 1985. Angular made it their mission to search high and low to unearth the real gems of this synth based sound in order to make a definitive retrospective of the lost genre of cold wave. Features a collection of ultra rare singles, lost radio sessions and cassette tapes. Thankfully the album comes with detailed liner notes in the booklet with lots of info on these obscure artists. Think of a more gritty take on the sounds of the likes of human league, visage, gary numan etc. March 2010-Cd-Angular recording corporation-€13.99

Davis, miles-Miles 1954 [double 180 gram vinyl]-This double vinyl is basically a collection of the now legendary christmas eve sessions from way back in 1954. The majority of tracks here eventually featured on two separate albums, the modern jazz greats was released in 1955 and then the truly legendary bags groove came out in 1957. Its hard to figure out from the sleevenotes on the back who was actually playing on these sessions but as far as i can make out the following people were in attendence, miles davs [trumpet], milt jackson [vibraphone], thelonious monk [piano], percy heath [bass], kenny clarke [drums], sonny rollins [tenor sax] and horace silver [piano]. The album features walkin, blue n boogie, solar, you dont know what love is, love me or leave me, bags groove, airegin, oleo, but not for me, doxy, the man i love, swing spring, round midnight and bemsha swing. The album is now reissued on the doxy label and comes pressed on two heavyweight slabs of 180 gram vinyl. Features liner notes from audrey de mars. March 2010-2lp-Doxy-€22.99

Deez, darwin-Darwin deez-The debut album on the lucky number label from american underground indie pop artist darwin deez. The album features his most recent single radar detector and nine other intimate little pop gems. This guy actually reminds me a little bit of old school off kilter indie pop rewritten for a casio keyboard. Its a lovely intimate collection of bedroom recordings full of bouncy pop sounds with hints of everything from early pavement top smooth seventies radio pop. At times it comes across like a more lo fi take on the sounds of the likes of phoenix, features lots of chunky beats and plenty of choppy new wave like guitar sounds. A very pleasently catchy slice of modern underground pop music. April 2010-Cd-Lucky numbers-€13.99

Donaldson, lou-Alligator boogaloo-Originally released on the blue note label back in 1967. The album now comes reissued in the original sleeve with liner notes by del shields. The album features alligator boogaloo, one cylinder, the thang, aw shucks, rev moses and i want a little girl. Joining donaldson on these sessions were melvin lastie on cornet, george benson on guitar, lonnie smith on organ and leo morris on drums.-Lp-Blue note-€13.99

Donaldson, lou-Blues walk-Much of the work of lou donaldson is as funky and blues influenced as you will hear in jazz, this is thanks to his straightforward playing and some incredible lineups he recorded and toured with over the years, this album is no exception with herman foster on piano, peck morrison on bass, dave bailey on drums and ray barretto on conga behind the saxophone of lou, features blues walk, move, the masquerade is over, play ray, autumn nocturne, callin all cats, originally released in 1958-Lp-Blue note-€13.99

Double dagger-Masks-The return of this baltimore based trio with their new mini album on the thrill jockey label. The album comes packaged in three different sleeves, each one with different mask on the front. The album features another damn fine collection of angular post punk sounds full of choppy guitars and howling angst ridden vocal sounds. It kind of reminds me of a more grunged up take on the early post hardcore sounds of the likes of fugazi blended with the bass heavy vibes of mcclusky. March 2010-Cd-Thrill jockey-€10.99

Drunken boat-Cut the engines raise the sails-Drunken boat are a new irish based two piece featuring brian walsh and simon brennan. These guys used looped guitars, vocals and laptop electronica to truly great effects on this debut album released through their own label. Its got elements of a slightly more folky sounding dave pajo aka papa m the way they use looped repetitive intricate guitar threads behind subtle vocals and plenty of computer based sounds. The album also features lots of the atmospheric background sounds that you would hear from labels like touch or expanding. The addition of cello and banjo towards the end gives the album a slightly more live organic feel. Really lovely stuff. November 2007-Cd-Say what you mean records-€4.99

Dylan, bob-John wesley harding-Classic early bob dylan album from way back in 1967. Features charles mccoy on bass, kenny buttrey on drum and pete drake on steel guitar. It was probably one of dylans earliest forays into the more country based sounds particularly with the addition of the steel guitar in the lineup.-Lp-Sundazed-€18.99

Efterklang-Magic chairs-Brand new album from danish ensemble efterklang, their third full length so far and the first to be released on the 4ad label. Joining the regular troupe of musicians on this recording are peter broderick, heather woods broderick, daniel james, rune fonseca, daniel smith nielsen and frederik teiger. This is probably one of their most song orientated almost pop like albums to date so far, the more post rock like meanderings of previous albums has now pretty much given way to something akin to pure chamber pop at times. Its dramatic and blissful brass led pop music, perfectly laid back but still bursting with emotion. Its decidely kooky [but then what else do you expect from efterklang] but also strangely catchy at the same time. If you liked the recent owen pallett album then you should definitely add this one to your collection straight away. Comes in a lovely card digipack sleeve with a big foldout poster inner sleeve, you can always depend on 4ad for superior packaging. February 2010-Cd-4ad-€13.99

Errors-Come down with me [limited to 300 copies]-Album number two from this epic post rock meets funky electronica outfit signed to the rock action label [run by mogwai]. Its an album of intricate post rock blended with lots of funky beats and lush synth vibes. Sounding at times like battles jamming with either daft punk or the chemical brothers with a bit of air thrown in for good measure. There are still plenty of those mogwai like guitar led moments on the album but this one definitely adds much more of an electro like feel, its almost like some updated post rock take on the space rock sounds of the late seventies. The album is limited to only 300 copies on vinyl and comes in a gatefold sleeve. March 2010-Lp-Rock action-€15.99

Field music-Field music measure-Field music are a kind of psychedelic indie pop sounding outfit hailing from sunderland and based around the songwriting skills of brothers peter and david brewis. Peter is also a member of the week that was whilst david also moonlights in school of language. This is their third album to date and the follow up to tones of town from 2007 [also on the memphis industries label]. The album is a wonderfully happy and highly intricate collection of sounds, in spirit they do kind of remind me a bit of the beach boys in the way they can deliver something so infectiously bouncy and musically deft at the same time. With the album clocking in at over 70 minutes you can expect many twists and turns, with some tracks offering up some truly lush orchestral pop whilst others are just perfect guitar driven psyche pop. Its also an album with plenty of complicated post rock like influences, they are one of the few bands i know who can actually turn post rock into something that the kinks would be proud to put their name to. At times its almost like a brief history of rock music from the past with references to the beatles, blue nile, fleetwood mac, the kinks, king crimson, led zeppelin, prince and plenty more inbetween. Sit back and revel in some truly beautiful laid back classic rock music. The album comes as a special edition double cd in a gatefold sleeve with foldout printed inner. Four tet-There is love in you-Kieran hebden returns with his first new full length album in four years and his fifth album as four tet to date. The album features the recent single love cry. This is definitely an album that sees the trademark four tet folktronica sound slowly move towards something more akin to minimal / ambient techno. The beats are somewhat more propulsive on this collection, whilst still beautifully gentle at the same time. Musically this is as good and familiar as the past few four tet albums but there is definitely a gentle shift towards a more ambient techno like vibe. This album also seems to feature a lot less of the acoustic guitar strumming of earlier outings, now replaced with moog like sound effects and lots of vocal sampling. As ever this man makes music that works both on dancefloors and laying on the couch, there are not many you can say that about in this particular genre. January 2010-Cd-Domino-€13.99

Frames, the-The roads outgrown-Us import featuring a collection of tracks from the last few years, features the track new partner from the 7 inch only irish split release with calexico, features reworked versions of tracks from the album for the birds, august 2003-Cd-Overcoat-€11.99

Francis, valerie-Slow dynamo-The debut album from this irish based singer songwriter on vf records. Features a delicious collection of woozy late night electronic tinged mellow pop songs. The album was produced by jimmy eadie who has worked with both jape and david kitt in the recent past. Its a beautiful collection of layered electronic pop sounds ala postal service or some of the more recent rumblings from the morr music label coupled with some acoustic based bedroom folk sounds with a somewhat jazz like hint. Put them both together and you end up with one very very accomplished debut album that gently sucks you in. The album features lots of gentle electronic beats, woozy keyboard sounds and the whispered tones of francis voice. May 2009-Cd-Vf records-€13.99

Frightened rabbit-The winter of mixed drinks-The return of this scottish outfit on the fat cat label. The album features the recent single swim until you cant see land. The album features a fairly euphoric like sounding collection of indie rock based tunes. There are hints of the likes of arcade fire or broken social scene but these guys also seem to include bits of intricate post rock and even the odd bit of rustic americana / roots rock. There is something very uplifting about the sounds on the album, the songs seem to build slowly into these massive bursts of fuzzy indie rock with lots of meandering jangly guitar sounds. Comes in a lovely four part foldout card sleeve too. February 2010-Cd-Fat cat-€14.99

Gonjasufi-A sufi and a killer-The debut album from brand new artist gonjasufi on the warp label. Backed by a trio of the west coasts most renowned producers [namely mainframe, flying lotus and the gaslamp killer]. The album features a rather strange and new sounding almost psychedelic take on underground hip hop. At times it sounds like some long lost early seventies psyche folk record, full of middle eastern pop influences before gentle hip hop beats take control. Its probably an album that owes much to the producers too, its full of cleverly worked samples and looped sound effects. With a total of 19 tracks included this one plays more like a compilation of different artists at times, there are even some heavy guitar based tunes in here. Warp seem to always unearth these eclectic genre hopping artists with such ease, no other label does this kind of thing as well. March 2010-Cd-Warp-€13.99

Grizzly bear-Veckatimest-Grizzly bear return with a truly stunning new album on the warp label. These guys have been hinting at greatness for quite a while now but this new album reaches a whole new level altogether. The album really benefits for a truly lush production and the addition of big orchestral sounds. They are still a band that vocally remind me of the summer pop sounds of the beach boys but there the comparisons end. Featuring lots of quirky and infectiously catchy laid back pop songs with lots of electric piano and sixties like guitar sounds. Its one of those albums with some many layers that each listen delivers a totally different experience. If a bit of sixties tinged indie pop and four part vocal harmonies are your thing then this could be an early contender for album of the year. May 2009-Cd-Warp-€10.99

The album features nine pieces of truly sublime mostly instrumental sounds which at times are almost borering on modern classical. Its full of swirling synth drone effects and shimmering guitar sounds with tons of lush strings courtesy of sigur ros collaborators amiina. Kelleher, patrick-You look cold-A truly superb debut full length from this irish based artist
ow signed to the osaka label. This one man band has previously released a six track ep on his own label last year. The album is genre hopping collection of sounds mostly based in classic old school bedroom indie lo fi and intimate electronica. Thats just for starters though as kelleher takes in elements of psyche folk, animal collective like psyche pop, can like krautrock experimentalism and some of the ethereal new wave of this mortal coil. As y0u can guess from the wide range of references this is not an easy album to pigeonhole and thats always a good thing with us. There are intimate acoustic folk songs, throbbing analog krautrock and psychedelic electronica sounds going on and its a real treat for music fans that want something just a little bit different. This man is a serious talent and we beg you to try out this album. June 2009-Cd-Osaka-€12.99

Kitt, david-The nightsaver-The return of one of our all time favourite irish artists. Mr kitt sounds like he has gone right back to his two early albums on this new collection featuring a classic stripped down sound complete with programmed beats, chunky keyboards and plenty of hazy hypnotic pop songs. Recorded mostly at home the album has the old familiar intimate kind of bedroom pop feel about it that made us fall in love with his music in the first place. Features ten of his finest songs full of infectious grooves. 2009-Cd-Gold spillin records-€15.99

Legion of two-Riffs-Brand new project fronted by the former decal member alan o boyle and joined by irish based percussionist david lacey. This is an album of both haunting and dreamlike sounds with hints of early godflesh mingling with some lovely ambient shoegazing like vibes. At times it kind of reminds me of a slightly heavier take on the likes of jesu. Sounding like the most evil doom rock transferred to fuzzy analog synths with lots of dreamy shimmering guitar effects. The odd track even delves into some trance like mix of doom rock and synthy prog with some truly evil bass sounds. Its all quite hypnotic and almost dubby when put together featuring the perfect battle between live drums and heavily processed electronic sounds. This is a truly superb collection from two very forward thinking musicians. July 2009-Cd-Planet mu-€12.99

Let me tell you about the blues-Texas blues [the evolution of texas blues]-The evolution of texas blues is the fourth chapter in let me tell you about the blues, a series of cd sets that celebrate the blues as it was made in the cities and states of america. Each collection provides a historic overview of the ways in which the music developed through the middle decades of the twentieth century. The box set features a collection of music spread over three chronologically ordered cd going right back to blind lemon jefferson in 1926 and eventually ending up with big mama thornton in 1957. There is nothing new or unreleased on here but it is a truly amazing introduction to the texas blues sound and its evolution from the very early days. The box features a total of 76 pure gems from start to finish and comes with a detailed booklet with liner notes from neil slaven. You wont find a better priced introduction to the texas blues and its a great way of discovering some new artists along the way too. Comes in a lovely three part foldout card sleeve. March 2010-3cd-Fantasy voyage-€14.99

Lewis, furry-I will turn your money green [double vinyl]-One of the all time great bluesmen of the 1920's, furry lewis was one of the only bluesmen of his generation to achieve widespread fame with the blues revival of the sixties, after a recording hiatus of nearly three decades. He originally began his recording career way back in 1927 and this album features tracks from those very first sessions. The album is pressed on double heavyweight vinyl. Joining lewis of the first five tracks are landers waller and charles jackson, apart from that the rest of the tracks are all solo recordings. March 2010-2lp-Monk-€18.99

Liars-Sisterworld-Liars return with their fifth album to date, and their first since their self titled album from 2007. I have to say liars are one of those bands that always make life hard when trying to review / describe their music to other people, i must also say that i find that a good thing from time to time. They are one of those rare bands that just wont fall into any particular genre or sound and this album is no exception to that rule. There is a rather dark almost sinister like feel about this new collection, at times reminding me of the darker side of bands like swans, birthday party and even early sonic youth. There are also moments of sixties tinged surf blues sludge in here blended with fuzzed up no wave avant rock, then a big wobbly synth bass throws a spanner in the works turing everything into some cacophonous slice of electro rock. Its as challenging as ever and wonderfully dark hearted. March 2010-Cd-Mute-€14.99

Massive attack-Heligoland-Massive attack finally return after a lenghty seven year hiatus with their fifth studio album. As it with pretty much all massive attack albums its really all about the guests on the album. This one ticks all the right boxes with regulars martina topley bird and horace andy being joined by an all star lineup including damon albarn, tunde adebimpe [tv on the radio], guy garvey [elbow], adrian utley [portishead] and the pick of them [for me anway] hope sandoval of mazzy star fame. Its another superb collection of truly blissful electronic pop and classic trip hop sounds. March 2010-Cd-Virgin-€15.99

Mayfield, curtis-Roots-Originally released in 1971 on the rhino label. The album features seven absolutely essential curtis mayfield tracks with each and everyone a total winner. Includes get down, keep on keeping on, underground, we got to have peace, beautiful brother of mine, now youre gone and love to keep you in mind. Mccombs, cass-Catacombs-Baltimore based singer songwriter cass mccombs returns with a stunning new collection on the domino label. Following in from his rather beautiful dropping the writ album from 2008 this is another exceptional collection of superbly crafted laid back alt rock songs. Mccombs is both an astute lyric writter and classy guitar picker. The album has a kind of rootsy feel about it without delving too deep into either country or folk. Quite simply the eleven tracks included are faultless from start to finish both lyrically and in particular with his sublime guitar playing. The album has a somewhat bright kind of breezy feel about it featuring a beautifully sparse production which just allows the songs to speak for themselves. Do your record collection a favour and include this album in it. June 2009-Cd-Domino-€12.99

Mississippi sheiks-Sitting on top of the world [180 gram vinyl]-The mississippi sheiks were formed in jackson around 1926 as a trio of guitar and fiddle music. The original line up featured lonnie, sam and armenter chatmon [aka bo carter]. Their biggest hit sitting on top of the world [featured here] went on to be covered by many many artists over the years including the likes of frank sinatra, bob dylan and cream. This collection on the monk label features a collection of recordings from two different sessions in 1930. The album features driving that thing, alberta blues, winter time blues, the sheik waltz, the jazz fiddler, sitting on top of the world, stop and listen blues, lonely one in this town, we are both feeling good right now, cracking them things, grinding old fool, jake leg blues, back to mississippi and west jackson blues. 2009-Lp-Monk-€13.99

Newsom, joanna-Have one on me [triple cd box]-Not one for doing things in small measures, joanna newsom returns with her brand new album, her first since the lush orchestrated epic that was ys in 2006. This new one is a triple album, one for each year since ys [apparently]. The band features ys street band members ryan francesconi and neal morgan again. It would be fair to say after the lush orchestral washes of the van dyke parks scored last album this album has much more in common with her debut album [the mild eyed mender]. Its very much a stripped down sound again with newsom playing both piano and harp throughout. Its nice to see her going back to the sounds of the debut album, this one is all about her truly stunning voice again with just the barest of musical accompaniment. Its an album deeply rooted in traditional folk sounds, both english and american with plenty of nods back towards an old english victorian kind of vibe. If you are a novice to this womans overall sound then try to imagine a slightly more rustic sounding kate bush playing a harp, if anything newsom is even more kooky than that. This woman possesses one of the most distinctive voices around at the moment, there is no mistaking who you are listening to right from the first note. As ever its full of dramatic bursts of strings and piano, there is little else going on musically which really allows you to enjoy the truly wonderful lyrics this woman writes. Her songs are more like miniature short stories, there is nothing simple about the kind of songs this woman writes and that has always been something that makes you come back to her albums all the time. This is nothing short of beautiful, and believe me its not short but for such a long album its does seem to pass rather quickly. Its not often you can say this about a triple album but this is nothing short of perfect, just over two hours of pure bliss. The album comes packaged in a rather lavish heavy card box, each cd is individually packaged in a miniature card sleeve inside. There is also an extensive booklet with lyrics for all the tracks. O doherty, david-Lets david o doherty-Recorded live in front of real human beings here in dublin in whelans of wexford street in august 2009. The master of ceremonies david o doherty brings his very unique brand of musical comedy live to the intimate setting of whelans, this is his second live cd so far and the follow up to giggle me timbers. Comes in a lovely card gatefold sleeve. December 2009-Cd-David o doherty-€9.99

O rourke, jim-The visitor-Jim o rourke returns with his first solo collection in eight years. The album sees o rourke in totally solo mood and features just one long instrumental track clocking in at just over 38 minutes. The album is being released pretty much as a sequel to his album bad timing from way back in 1999, particularly as it features some really beautiful lenghty passages of steel strung acoustic guitar arrangements. I have recently seen this album described a modern folk symphony and that phrase really does pin down this albums sound in two simple words. The album does have moments harking back to the work of the great john fahey but o rourke also adds in big washes of lush string sounds along with some truly awesome multitracked acoustic guitar sounds, it almost sounds like there could be ten different guitarists working at the same time. O rourke also throws in some passages of beautifully minimal piano which really adds to the overall orchestral feel to the record. I have to say this album really is best enjoyed in just one sitting and the forty or so minutes really do pass rather quickly. Its been a long wait, but in fairness albums like this dont just happen overnight. August 2009-Cd-Drag city-€13.99

Complete with several brass and persussion members this is big band funk / soul at its very very finest. Panda bear-Person pitch [double vinyl]-The much anticipated third solo album from noah lennox aka panda bear from the animal collective, the album features the truly exceptional bros single along with six other pure psychedelic pop gems, on first listen this albums sounds something like what brian wilson and syd barrett would come up with if they ever worked in the studio together, obviously thats just a starting point when it comes to somebody as talented as panda bear as he also takes in some truly infectious dub sounds and elements of psychedelic hip hop but the one this that runs throughout the album is the felling of breezy californian pop, this is one of those albums that will quietly find its way into peoples favourite albums of the year, very very limited double vinyl pressing with foldout poster, july 2007-2lp-Paw tracks-€17.99

All the tracks for this new collection have been lovingly remastered and are all chosen by the band themselves. The album features tracks from marsen jules, brock van wey / bvdub, triola, wolfgang voigt, the orb, mikkel metal, dj koze, jurgen paape, dettinger, thomas fehlmann and popnoname. Its one of those perfect collections of totally laid back and blissful ambient pop music. Its pure headphone music full of gentle beats and glitchy soundscapes, dont let the word pop in the title put you off, this aint cheesy chart music we are dealing with her. Longtime kompakt fans will know what to expect from this one, should also appeal to lovers of the gentle rumblings of labels like morr music etc. Stunningly beautiful at times its got to be said. Quasi-American gong [limited edition double cd version]-Brand new album from this american outfit formed by janet weiss [sleater kinney] and sam coomes [heatmiser]. Formed way back in 1993 the band have been operating as a two piece for many many years now and are joined on this album by new member joanna bolme [stephen malkmus & the jicks]. Its been a long four year wait for long time fans, their previous album when the going gets dark came out on the domino label in 2006. The album features eleven bursts of guitar heavy classic indie rock sounds, full of fuzzed up guitar action falling somewhere between pavement and dinosaur jr with just a little hint of the psychedelic sounds of the flaming lips. Its classic american indie rock at its very finest, full of melodic pop and some blazing guitar solo action. This is a band equally happy making beach boys like piano led indie pop as they are at producing fuzzed up garage rock tunes, a much underrated band which may just change as soon as you hear this gem of an album. The album will come with an extra bonus disc [so far so good, a quasi anthology] featuring thirteen classics from their back catalogue. February 2010-2cd-Domino-€13.99

Real estate-Real estate-New jersey based quartet on the wonderful woodsist label. The album features a truly superb blend of jangly guitar based eighties like indie pop and sixties garage psyche pop sounds, drenched in reverb with just the right amount of lo fi fuzziness. Its full of intricate guitar work, kind of reminds me of orange juice meets the byrds on a slightly more psychedelic buzz. This is a real gem of a jangly guitar driven pop album, full of infectiously catchy songs that just get better and better with every listen. Definitely one for fans of yo la tengo, girls, jesus and mary chain, pastels, sixties garage pop, c86 indie pop and surf pop. 2009-Cd-Woodsist-€15.99

Retribution gospel choir-2 [with bonus mp3 download]-Album number two from this rock outfit fronted by alan sparhawk [guitarist / singer with low]. Its the follow up to their self titled debut which came out in 2008 and thieir first for the sub pop label. The band features sparhawk on vocals / guitars, steve garrington on bass and eric pollard on drums. The album was recorded by eric swanson at sacred heart studios in minnesota. This is very much an album that sees sparhawk let loose with the kind of rock based guitar action the really wouldnt work on any of the recordings with low. This is back to basics guitar based rock music, falling somewhere between the slow core sounds of the likes of the red house painters and some of neil youngs crazy horse vibes. Ive got to admit it great to hear this guy let loose with his guitar on this album, its full of fuzzed up distorted sounds and plenty of heavy riff action. The album comes with a full mp3 download of all tracks inside the sleeve. February 2010-Lp-Sub pop-€13.99

Scott-heron, gil-Im new here-The legendary gil scott-heron returns with his first new full length album in thirteen years. Assisted by producer and head honcho of xl recordings richard russell. Scott-heron is probably most famous for his truly legendary track the revolution will not be televised. The album features a total of fifteen tracks spread over 28 minutes, some almost pure spoken word with the barest of background music. The album features several covers including im new here by smog, me and the devil by robert johnson and ill take care of you by bobby bland. Its a beautifully soulful collection of sounds, actually reminds me a little of the massive attack tracks that featured horace andy in the past, gently funky but simply allowing to voice to carry each song. The production it must be said is just beautiful, its all very understated with gentle beats, strings and lush synths going about their business in the background. This album though, is all about this mans truly amazing voice, deep and menacing at tmes, heartfelt and soulful on others. Its a real joy and at only 28 minutes you will just keep hitting the repeat button for more, never has less is more been true. February 2010-Cd-Xl-€16.99

Sereena maneesh-No 2 / abyss in b minor-Album number two from this norwegian shoegazing / psyche rock outfit, now signed to the 4ad label. Its a fairly thunderous collection of dreamy psyche rock action with lots shimmering shoegazing like guitar action. Sounding at times like my bloody valentine on a somewhat more sixties like pshcye rock vibe whilst also throwing in the odd slice of pure sunshine indie pop [ala lush]. The album also has a hint of the more uptempo take on the shoegazing sound that bands like ride seemed to be so good at. March 2010-Cd-4ad-€13.99

Shearwater-The golden archipelago-The golden archipelago is the third in a trypych of albums including palo santo [2006] and rook [2008]. This time shearwater turn their attention to a portrait of life on islands. The album features another beautifully lush collection of almost orchestral like mellow pop sounds with hints of rootsy americana. At times the album kind of reminds me of the likes of sparklehorse or sixteen horsepower, although these guys deal in a sound slightly more sparse than either of them. Its could almost be described as a slightly more rootsy sparse radiohead blended with the minimalism of the likes of low. A truly haunting and emotionally charged collection of songs. February 2010-Cd-Matador-€13.99

Sigur ros-With a buzz in our ears we play endlessly-This new album from sigur ros has a real sense of being recorded live in the studio compared to the layers of production on some of their previous albums. This one kind of brings me back to the start of it all with their debut ny batteri. Its very much an album features all live guitars, drums and vocals and not a lot of studio trickery or keyboards to be found. Even the vocals sound beautifully raw and live. Its much more of a direct hitting album as opposed to the more layered effects of the last few releases. June 2008-Cd-Emi-€9.99

Silver mt zion memorial orchestra-Kollaps tradixionales [limited edition with book]-Spearheaded by the guitar and voice of canadian musician efrim menuck [godspeed you black emperor] the silver mount zion collective return with a new album, this time dropping the tra la la and now calling themselves thee silver mt zion memorial orchestra. The band are now joined by new drummer david payant with regulars jessica moss on violin, sophie trudeau on violin and thierry amar on bass. The album features another fine collection of trademark silver mt zion sounds, falling somewhere between modern classical and epic post rock. It truly is an epic sound that these guys always manage to achieve, think godspeed with a somewhat swampy blues influence [ala swans] and thats just for starters. There is never anything simple in trying to pin down a review of any of their albums and thankfully this is no exception. There are some truly beautiful almost classical like passages featuring some amazing washes of strings and brass. Its an album that also takes in plenty of rustic roots rock like moments, obviously given a very distinctive twist by menuck, not every band can do roots rock with a classical twist. A truly epic and somewhat dark collection of songs. This version is limited to 1500 copies and comes with 16 page large format book and foldout poster. February 2010-Cd-Constellation-€22.99

Skelton, richard-Landings-Brand new album from multi instrumentalist richard skelton, he also records under the names a broken consort, riftmusic, carousell and clouwbeck. The album features some truly beautiful / abstract string based ambient sounds. Based around slowly strummed guitars and drone like violin sounds, skelton then merges all manner of found sounds and organ like effects into the mix. The end result is an ever pulsating collection of swirling oscillating sounds, both ambient and drone like at the same time. Not quite as glitchy as fennesz or as dubby as biosphere but similar in atmosphere to both, its definitely a headphone album to really get the full effect of some of the sounds hidden way down in the mix. Hauntingly beautiful stuff and something that fans of the type label will just adore from start to finish. February 2010-Cd-Type-€17.99

Spacemen 3-Perfect prescription [180 gram vinyl reissue]-At last a long overdue vinyl reissue of this truly classic spacemen 3 album, originally released way back in 1987. St vincent-Actor-St vincent is annie clark from tulsa and along with being a member of the polyphonic spree in the past she is also a member of sufjan stevens touring band, this is her second solo album under the st vincent moniker and her first for the 4ad label. Her band on this album features guest spots from mckenzie smith and paul alexander from midlake. The album is another super collection of kooky off kilter indie pop sounds with hints of bjork, kate bush, chamber pop, scuzzy indie rock, piano led ballads and string led cinematic sounds. The album features lots of orchestral backing tracks as clark then weaves her multitracked voice in and out with totally dramatic effect. Its one of those rare little gems that just impossible to pigeonhole into any particular genre so take my advice and have a listen. May 2009-Lp-4ad-€18.99

The album features on jupiter, ufo and secuctive fantasy [which takes up all of side two]. Comes with all the original artwork including printed inner sleeve. 2009-Lp-Kindred spirits-€13.99

Surfer blood-Astro coast-The debut album from this florida based indie rock outfit on the kanine label. Its a collection of somewhat blissful indie rock meets sixties surf pop. Try to imagine the likes of pavement or weezer jamming with the beach boys. Its full of clever indie rock sounds, complete with both jangly guitars and hints of shoegazing, then throw some of the vocal harmonies of the beach boys over the top of all that. Its a really happy feelgood kind of sound, drenched in reverb, at times kind of reminding me of some early pixies sounds for some reason. This could well become the soundtrack to the summer months. March 2010-Cd-Kanine-€17.99

Tangerine dream-Phaedra [remastered]-Phaedra is probably still one of the finest space / prog rock albums of its time and now comes reissued on 180 gram vinyl and fully remastered. The album was originally released in 1973 on the virgin label and features phaedra, mysterious semblance at the strand of nightmares, movements of a visionary and sequent c. The band at the time featured edgar froese, chris franke and peter baumann. Its worth it just for the 18 minute title track alone. March 2010-Lp-Virgin-€21.99

Tangerine dream-Rubycon [remastered]-Originally released in 1975 and the follow up to their legendary phaedra album from two years previously. The album features just two tracks, rubycon parts one and two, both clocking in at just under 18 minutes each. The band at the time were edgar froese, peter baumann and chris franke. Its pretty much a stone cold classic in the prog / space rock genre and is still considered a classic example of early ambient electronic music. March 2010-Lp-Virgin-€21.99

This is the kit-Krulle bol-This is the debut album from english born folk singer kate stables. The last time we heard from stables was on her truly exceptional two wooden spoons single for the sunday best label. Thankfully there is a new recording of that track on this album along with eleven other true gems. Stables is also a member of folk duo whalebone poly. The album was produced by john parish who also assists on a couple of tracks. This really is a most beautiful collection of intimate sombre folk sounds with hints of early cat power and elements of early seventies british folk sounds. Fans of the recent nancy elizabeth album on the leaf label will quite simply adore this one. The majority of tracks feature just stables haunting voice and gently guitar picking with the most subtle brushed drums added from time to time. Possibly one of the finest folk albums of the year so far. August 2008-Cd-Microbe-€14.99

Three tales-Self titled-This is a rather excellent debut album from this new belfast based three piece released on the furious tradesman label. Its an album of real understated beauty with hints of low, yo la tengo, codeine, bedhead, dirty three and much more. Its beautifully quiet at times but also not afraid to let loose with some explosive fuzzed up guitar moments reminiscent of both codeine and the red house painters. There are also plenty of intricate meandering post rock elements to the album with some beautiful passages of slowly strummed guitars and minimal dirty three like drum sounds. Fans of red house painters, low and codeine will simply adore this for its sombre minimalist ways. May 2008-Cd-Furious tradesmen-€9.99

Tindersticks-Falling down a mountain [with bonus mp3 download]-The tindersticks return with their eight studio album, their second to feature their new lineup [hungry saw from 2008 was the first]. The album was recorded over a three month period in two separate studios in belgium and france. The album features the truly stunning voice of mary margaret o hara [its been too long mary, please make another record]. The band are also aided by the new ideas of fresh additions early harvin and our very own david kitt. Its very much a stripped down sound compared to the lush orchestral sounds of their earlier albums of old, if anything, this one features more brass than strings. This album also has a slightly more live like feel about it, a much more loose kind of bright atmosphere prevails. There is still plenty of that late night smokey jazz feel about the album with this one adding lots of sixties like organ sounds. The album is pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl and also comes with an mp3 download coupon featuring free downloads of all tracks from the album. January 2010-Lp-4ad-€19.99

To rococo rot-Speculation-German electronic / post rock outfit return with a brand new collection on the domino label. The album was recorded at the legendary faust studios and features the regular trio of robert lippok, ronald lippok and stefan schneider. The album even features a guest spot from original faust member jochen imeler on the closing track. The album features a beautiful blend of dubby post rock sounds and gently throbbing electronica. At times its almost like the meeting of early tortoise and four tet which sees intricate guitar lines and keyboards merge seamlessy behind gentle minimal techno beats. The album also has plenty of touches of older seventies like krautrock and even the odd hint of new orders early forays bass heavy electronic new wave. March 2010-Cd-Domino-€13.99

Toro y moi-Causers of this-Brand new full length album from chaz bundick on the carpark label. Its the first release since the truly excellent blessa single [also on carpark] from 2009. Toro y moi is basically a one man band centred around south carolina native chaz bundick. The album kind of reminds me a bit of animal collective or panda bear on a totally blissed out seventies soul / funk buzz. Try to imagine animal collective, daft punk and stevie wonder all working on the one laptop. Its full of seventies disco soul sounds with lots of broken hip hop beats and looping backwards sampling. For some strange reason i cant stop thinking of scritti politti whilst listening to the album, there are certain tracks that really do remind me of them, with maybe just a bit more of a psychedelic twist. This is definitely an early contender for soundtrack of the summer [if we ever get one that is]. March 2010-Cd-Carpark records-€17.99

Triffids-Wide open road [the best of the triffids]-Eighteen track best of released to coincide with the ten disc deluxe box set on the domino label. Its a nice conscise overview of this australian bands career highlights, dedicated fans will probably go for the ten disc set but this may be a better place to start if you just want a brief sampler of their work. The album features tracks spanning their entire career, going right back to the early days. The full tracklisting for the album is wide open road, red pony, reverie, beautiful waste, hell of a summer, property is condemned, raining pleasure, the seabirds, lonely stretch, stolen property, kathy knows, bury me deep in love, a trick of the light, jerdacuttup man, too hot to move, goodbye little boy, new years greetings and save what you can. April 2010-Cd-Domino-€11.99

Tunng-And then we saw land-Brand new album from tunng on the full time hobby label, features the most recent single hustle. This is probably one of their most uptempo and freeflowing albums to date. Its got a much bigger kind of feel about it, still distinctly folk like at times but the scope of sounds on this one really is something new for tunng. As mentioned it is still an album deeply rooted in folk music, both english and american with plenty of laptop electronic trickery still going on too. This album does sound more like a full band effort compared to some of the more intimate previous collections, its almost folk pop like from time to time with the odd moment of something akin to choral folk. February 2010-Cd-Full time hobby-€10.99

Twinkranes-Spektrum theatre snakes-The long awaited debut album from this dublin based three piece finally hits the shelves, courtesy of the twisted nerve label. The album was co produced by voice of the seven woods frontman ricky tomlinson. An album i have to admit has totally blown us away here in the shop and a real late contender for our irish album of the year. On first listen this is a real gem for lovers of all things krautrock but its only after repeated listens that the many many layers and sounds really begin to reveal themselves. It is definitely based in the kind of hypnotic repetitive sounds of seventies krautrock but dig deeper and you will hear bits of space rock, prog, pure psychedelia and even the kind of crazed early electronic trickery of the bbc radiophonic workshop. Featuring a truly propulsive rhythm section laying grooves down for some dr who like sound effects, these guys are not afraid to let loose and totally rock out from time to time too. November 2009-Lp-Twisted nerve-€18.99

Unthanks, the-Heres the tender coming-Brand new album from the band formerly known as rachel unthank and the winter set, the name change reflecting the long established reality that the band is actually co fronted by rachels sister becky unthank. A slightly more full sound compared to the last album bairns with the addition of a string quarte, brass, percussion and piano. Its another truly stunning collection of folk songs deeply rooted in the old traditional sounds of english folk music from the sixties and seventies with the addition of the brass adding a kind of old time mining town brass band effect. There is still plenty of that sparse vocal led folk sound going on here, dont worry too much as its not that different to bairns. Its an album that will more than satisfy lovers of modern acoustic folk music and fans of the older sounds of fairport convention, martin carty and waterson / carthy. Featuring two of the finest voices working on the folk circuit at the moment. September 2009-Cd-Emi-€15.99

Vampire weekend-Contra-New york based vampire weekend return with their second album for the xl label and the long awaited follow up to their self titled debut from 2008. Its another incredibly catchy selection of tracks which sees the band yet again seamlessy blend african beats and rhythms with catchy melodic indie rock. Its full of intricate yet highly catchy african like guitar rhythms, almost baile funk like electronic beats and psychedelic tinged indie pop. There really is nothing to compare these guys to, people talk about the graceland influences but these guys take that sound off into far too many tangents to warrant any comparisons to paul simon. At the heart of this album is a very very clever pop record subsequently layered with tons of african and psyche pop sounds. A much more sophisticated and lush affair than their debut but you wont be let down by it. January 2010-Cd-Xl-€16.99

March 2010-Cd-Damaged goods-€13.99

Volcano choir-Unmap [featuring bon iver]-Volcano choir is a brand new collaborative project between justin vernon [aka bon iver] and the collection of colonies of bees. This is their debut release for the jag jaguwar label. Bon iver fans should be warned this is a very different collection of sounds compared to his solo release for emma. This is a collection of almost psyche folk based sounds with heaps of added electronic tinkering, coming across like animal collective in a more folky mood. The album features some beautifully abstract almost ambient like passages reminiscent of fennesz meets a bit of four tet. September 2009-Cd-Jagjaguar-€13.99

Wonder, stevie-Talking book-Classic stevie wonder album from 1972 on the tamla motown label, features you are the sunshine of my life, superstition, maybe your baby, big brother, youve got it bad girl, tuesday heartbreak and many more gems. 2000-Cd-Tamla motown-€9.99

Xiu xiu-Dear god i hate myself-Im kind of guessing here but i seem to make it seven full length albums to date from xiu xiu, fronted again on this one by mainman jamie stewart. The album is the first to feature new full time band member angela seo [piano, synth and drum programming]. The album was produced by jamie stewart and greg saunier from deerhoof. Along with helping on production saunier also plays on much of the record as does ches smith [john zorn, terry riley and marc ribot] who provides timpani, conga and moog. John dieterich from deerhoof also joins in on the traditional folk song cumberland gap. The band are even joined by the immaculata catholic school orchestra on stewarts ode the heartbreak and healing [this too shall pass away]. The album features a truly distinctive collection of art pop sounds that could only be xiu xiu from start to finish. Its full of dramatic avant pop sounds with an almost gothic like feel about it. An album of highly intricate sounds with bursts of classical like strings, piano interludes and all manner of electronic trickery. Its damn near impossible to try and put down in words what this one sounds like but i can hear the likes of antony and the johnsons, divine comedy and final fantasy in here [amongst many others]. February 2010-Cd-Kill rock stars-€12.99

Xx, the-Xx-The debut album from this young english based outfit on the xl offshoot label young turks. Its an album of both forward thinking and retro sounding tunes taking its lead from late eighties new wave and totally modernising the sound. Featuring lots of 4ad like shimmering reverb laden guitar sounds, almost four tet like beats, new wave synth sounds, heavily textured electronica and sultry laid back indie pop sounds. Its a fairly tricky one to pin down as its neither new wave nor indie pop, its full of chunky electronic beats which give it a totally modern and quite original twist. Kind of like a less intimate postal service but with lots of added guitars and a dark somewhat gothic like edge. Its definitely one that will appeal to lovers of the old 4ad sound and also the more modern electronic pop vibes of the morr music label. Its one of those albums that just grows on you with each listen. Comes in a lovely cutout card digipack sleeve. August 2009-Cd-Young turks-€13.99

Yellow swans-Going places-This is both the brand new and also very last album from noise based duo yellow swans. Its also their very first for the type label. The band features a duo of noisemaking individuals namely peter swanson and gabriel mindel. I wont even begin to guess at how many albums they have now released, there have been so many on different labels thats its just impossible to keep count on them. The album features six lenghty pieces of totally amazing white noise based avant rock, most of you know the deal with these guys at this stage, they have to be one of the finest noise based bands around at the moment. Its must be said this album also features some truly beautiful passages of drone based ambience, its still full of harsh noise but more in a fennesz kind of way. They really are one of the few bands out there who can do visceral, brutal and beautiful all at the same time. March 2010-Cd-Type-€17.99

Yo la tengo-Popular songs-The album opens up with a rather choice slice of orchestral driven psycye rock before hitting their more familiar melodic indie rock with some choice vocals from drummer georgia. For me this album really shows off this bands ability to hop between several different genres with such ease, its no surprise they have been making music since 1986. They are probaly one of the last remaining true american indie rock bands, still featuring the same three members after all these years. The album features a bit of everything from pure fuzzed up classic old style indie rock to some beautifully laid back indie pop, backed by an extended 15 minute psyche rock like jam at the end. Its an album that brings me back to an earlier classic which was and then nothing turned itself inside out from 2000 with its blend of darker late night gems and fuzzy indie rock, right down to the lengthy closing tunes. If you split the album into two distinct halves you get nine blasts of classic yo la tengo and then finishing off with 3 beautifully lengthy jam like tunes. Long time fans will definitely have this one in their list of top five yo la tengo albums and if you are new to this band you probably wont find a better way to introduce yourself to one of the very best indie rock bands on the planet at the moment. September 2009-Cd-Matador-€13.99

Zurich-Zurich-A long lost out of print album from way back in 1994 now reissued on limited edition vinyl by important records. The album was a collaboration between sarah peacock [seefeel], tony f wilson [knives ov resistance] and neil halstead [slowdive]. Im not entirely sure if the album ever got a proper release but thanks to important records for making it available again, its my first time to ever hear this record and believe me its a total gem. The album is reissued on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl and comes in a big heavy card sleeve. If you could transport yourself back to 1994 then you may recall the kind of ambient techno sound that was going around at the time, think aphex twin, autechre and polygon window. This is definitely an album of its time, but still a timeless sound as you can still hear its influence on music today. Its full of dark throbbing ambient sounds with lots of harsh glitchy sound effects. As far as this kind of ambient music goes, it really doesnt get any better than this. March 2010-2lp-Important records-€18.99
