Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.
We have been so blown away by two albums this week that we have decided to have a double / joint album of the week prize this week. It probably won’t come as a great surprise to hear our first pick is the new Joanna Newsom album, in fairness how could we not, it is quite brilliant and is definitely the most beautifully packaged album this week too. Our second choice goes to one of my favourite bands The Archie Bronson Outfit with their new album on the Domino label “Coconuts”, it’s a superb piece of psyche tinged indie rock and I hope you love it as much as I do. Both albums are on special offer this week, be warned though that the Joanna Newsom vinyl box is selling at only €23.99 for one week only.
The new Johnny Cash album “American VI” is now in stock, it’s the final installment in the Rick Rubin produced albums and one of my personal favourites too.
Duke Special is back with not one but three new albums this week. They all come as part of a deluxe box set for only €19.99 or you can buy them separately if you want.
There are a couple of additions to our ongoing collection of albums on the Analog Africa label, its rapidly becoming one of our favourite labels around here and highly recommended if you are a fan of raw seventies soul / funk.

Newsom, joanna-Have one on me [triple cd box]-Not one for doing things in small measures, joanna newsom returns with her brand new album, her first since the lush orchestrated epic that was ys in 2006. This new one is a triple album, one for each year since ys [apparently]. The band features ys street band members ryan francesconi and neal morgan again. It would be fair to say after the lush orchestral washes of the van dyke parks scored last album this album has much more in common with her debut album [the mild eyed mender]. Its very much a stripped down sound again with newsom playing both piano and harp throughout. Its nice to see her going back to the sounds of the debut album, this one is all about her truly stunning voice again with just the barest of musical accompaniment. Its an album deeply rooted in traditional folk sounds, both english and american with plenty of nods back towards an old english victorian kind of vibe. If you are a novice to this womans overall sound then try to imagine a slightly more rustic sounding kate bush playing a harp, if anything newsom is even more kooky than that. This woman possesses one of the most distinctive voices around at the moment, there is no mistaking who you are listening to right from the first note. As ever its full of dramatic bursts of strings and piano, there is little else going on musically which really allows you to enjoy the truly wonderful lyrics this woman writes. Her songs are more like miniature short stories, there is nothing simple about the kind of songs this woman writes and that has always been something that makes you come back to her albums all the time. This is nothing short of beautiful, and believe me its not short but for such a long album its does seem to pass rather quickly. Its not often you can say this about a triple album but this is nothing short of perfect, just over two hours of pure bliss. The album comes packaged in a rather lavish heavy card box, each cd is individually packaged in a miniature card sleeve inside. There is also an extensive booklet with lyrics for all the tracks. At its heart is a collection totally infectious rock songs, one or two even bordering on something akin to psychedelic punk funk. The album is just full of short sharp blasts of guitar heavy psyche pop, managing to be both totally retro and highly original at the same time. Try to imagine some totally fuzzed up new wave take on the sounds of the late sixties with a little bit of early punk rock and a hint of bluesy swamp rock thrown in. Features ten songs clocking in at 40 minutes, this is probably one of their most direct albums to date. This limited edition version will come with a free bonus dvd featuring videos for every track on the album, most of them made by the band and some by artist friends and collaborators. Field music-Field music measure-Field music are a kind of psychedelic indie pop sounding outfit hailing from sunderland and based around the songwriting skills of brothers peter and david brewis. Peter is also a member of the week that was whilst david also moonlights in school of language. This is their third album to date and the follow up to tones of town from 2007 [also on the memphis industries label]. The album is a wonderfully happy and highly intricate collection of sounds, in spirit they do kind of remind me a bit of the beach boys in the way they can deliver something so infectiously bouncy and musically deft at the same time. With the album clocking in at over 70 minutes you can expect many twists and turns, with some tracks offering up some truly lush orchestral pop whilst others are just perfect guitar driven psyche pop. Its also an album with plenty of complicated post rock like influences, they are one of the few bands i know who can actually turn post rock into something that the kinks would be proud to put their name to. At times its almost like a brief history of rock music from the past with references to the beatles, blue nile, fleetwood mac, the kinks, king crimson, led zeppelin, prince and plenty more inbetween. Sit back and revel in some truly beautiful laid back classic rock music. The album comes as a special edition double cd in a gatefold sleeve with foldout printed inner. At last an atlas-From which we were raised [with limited bonus cd]-The debut full length release on the slow loris label from dublin based artist at last an atlas. Its pretty much a one man band centred around hollows member greg o brien, with just a little help from some friends. Greg previoulsy released a limited edition split mini album on the slow loris with singer songwriter paul o reilly. This is a truly beautiful collection of intimate downbeat electronic folk like sounds, lots of gentle throbbing beats, lush synth sounds and hushed vocal tones. For some reason his material always reminds of a more stripped down grandaddy, like some late night take on their sound with a bit of elliott smith blended in. Its a beautiful dreamlike collection of intimate electronic pop sounds, it almost reminds me of the kind of thing that you would expect to hear from the morr music label, you know that kind of gentle late night pop sound they specialise in. Gently pulsating electronic folk pop at its very very finest. Comes with a limited edition free four track bonus cd. Only the first 100 copies will come with a bonus cd so get your orders in quick. Errors-Come down with me-Album number two from this epic post rock meets funky electronica outfit signed to the rock action label [run by mogwai]. Its an album of intricate post rock blended with lots of funky beats and lush synth vibes. Sounding at times like battles jamming with either daft punk or the chemical brothers with a bit of air thrown in for good measure. There are still plenty of those mogwai like guitar led moments on the album but this one definitely adds much more of an electro like feel, its almost like some updated post rock take on the space rock sounds of the late seventies. The album features a fairly euphoric like sounding collection of indie rock based tunes. There are hints of the likes of arcade fire or broken social scene but these guys also seem to include bits of intricate post rock and even the odd bit of rustic americana / roots rock. There is something very uplifting about the sounds on the album, the songs seem to build slowly into these massive bursts of fuzzy indie rock with lots of meandering jangly guitar sounds. Pollock, emma-The law of large numbers-The second solo album from the former delgados singer, the previous album watch the fireworks came out in 2007 on the 4ad label. This is her first for the chemikal underground label, a label which she co founded way back in 1995. The album features a really beautiful blend of gentle indie pop and piano based folk pop. Its an album with lots of hints of seventies folk pop and just a hint of the kooky drama of someone like kate bush. Its must be said you would definitely know you were still listening to an ex member of the delgados, there is something very distinctive about her songs. It really is a lovely mix of ballads and kooky pop sounds. Comes in a lovely card gatefold sleeve with full colour booklet. February 2010-Cd-Chemikal underground-€13.99
Quasi-American gong [with bonus download coupon]-Brand new album from this american outfit formed by janet weiss [sleater kinney] and sam coomes [heatmiser]. Formed way back in 1993 the band have been operating as a two piece for many many years now and are joined on this album by new member joanna bolme [stephen malkmus & the jicks]. Its been a long four year wait for long time fans, their previous album when the going gets dark came out on the domino label in 2006. The album features eleven bursts of guitar heavy classic indie rock sounds, full of fuzzed up guitar action falling somewhere between pavement and dinosaur jr with just a little hint of the psychedelic sounds of the flaming lips. Its classic american indie rock at its very finest, full of melodic pop and some blazing guitar solo action. This is a band equally happy making beach boys like piano led indie pop as they are at producing fuzzed up garage rock tunes, a much underrated band which may just change as soon as you hear this gem of an album. Tunng-And then we saw land-Brand new album from tunng on the full time hobby label, features the most recent single hustle. This is probably one of their most uptempo and freeflowing albums to date. Its got a much bigger kind of feel about it, still distinctly folk like at times but the scope of sounds on this one really is something new for tunng. As mentioned it is still an album deeply rooted in folk music, both english and american with plenty of laptop electronic trickery still going on too. This album does sound more like a full band effort compared to some of the more intimate previous collections, its almost folk pop like from time to time with the odd moment of something akin to choral folk. African scream contest-Raw and psychedelic afro sounds from benin and togo [various artists]-I have to say this analog africa label is rapidly becomming one of my favourite labels around at the moment, with regards to seventies african soul and funk that is. This is a truly blinding collection of totally raw soul and funk sounds recorded in the seventies, most of the artists hail from benin with just a couple featuring from togo. It would be hard not to mention the likes of james brown as an influence on the sounds of this album but these bands have a much more raw almost live like feel about them. The sounds are definitely deeply rooted in american soul / funk but when played by a bunch of african big bands the sounds then become something very very original. Its all very uptempo and quite rawkus, a real dream come true for collectors of classic seventies funk. The album comes packaged in a lovely card box and features a rather stunning 44 page full colour booklet with lots of detailed liner notes and some truly awesome photos from back in the day. 2009-Cd-Analog africa-€19.99

Bjarnason, daniel-Processions-The debut full length album from the brand new signing to the icelandic based bedroom community. Daniel has previously worked with the likes of olaf arnalds, hjaltalin and sigur ros. He is also the co founder and conductor with the isafold chamber orchestra. The album features three separate compositions split into a total of seven different movements. The first piece is bow to string, a piece written for multitracked cello, a beautifully dramatic piece of modern avant garde classical music full of interweaving almost steve reich like rhythms. The second piece processions is a much more full blown affair featuring a full orchestra, a lovely slow building piece of music with a much more traditional older classical kind of fell about it. The last piece written for harp is probably the most sedate and laid back of all the pieces, a beautifully calming hypnotic souding piece and the shortest of them all. Cash, johnny-American vi [aint no grave]-The sixth and final installment of rick rubin produced albums under the american recordings banner from johnny cash. All of these tracks were recorded around the same time as the sessions for the previous collection a hundred highways and featuring pretty much the same cast of musicians. Cash actually died only three months after these recordings were made, he was obviously in poor health and was also dealing with the death of his wife june carter cash, hence this is probably one of his most spiritual themed collections of them all. As ever its a beautifully intimate collection of tracks, pretty much all acoustic sounding with just the barest of backing music. The band on the recordings features mike campbell, smokey hornel, matt sweeney, benmont tench, jonny polosky, scott avett and seth avett. The album features aint no grave [traditional], redemption day [sheryl crow], for the good times [kris kristofferson], i corinthians [johnny cash], cant help but wonder where im bound [tom paxton], satisfied mind [jh hayes and jack rhodes], i dont hurt anymore [don robertson and jack rollins], last night i had the strangest dream [ed mccurdy] and aloha oe [queen lili uokalani]. Errors-Come down with me-Album number two from this epic post rock meets funky electronica outfit signed to the rock action label [run by mogwai]. Its an album of intricate post rock blended with lots of funky beats and lush synth vibes. Sounding at times like battles jamming with either daft punk or the chemical brothers with a bit of air thrown in for good measure. There are still plenty of those mogwai like guitar led moments on the album but this one definitely adds much more of an electro like feel, its almost like some updated post rock take on the space rock sounds of the late seventies. First aid kit-The big black and the blue [with bonus digital download coupon]-The debut full length album from these two teenage sisters on the wichita label. Swedish born klara and johanna soderberg have previously released just one ep on the rabid label [run by fellow swedes the knife]. Its an album featuring some of the most beautiful dual vocal harmonies you are likely to hear all year round, you have to keep reminding yourself these are only teenagers. Its an album deeply rooted in traditional old american folk music, the girls give it a little bit of a modern folk pop twist from time to time but the majority of tracks are down home old time roots classics. Its almost like bluegrass country pop at times. There is a bit of a joan baez vibe from time to time [imagine two of them singing at the same time] with a little bit of the mamas and papas. Anyone remember kathy and carol from the sixties, if so then you will love this one. I can see fans of everything from gillian welch to alela diane loving this one. Kaki king-Junior-Katherine king returns with her fifth full length album to date and probably her most accessable album too. Its much more of a traditional song orientated collection compared to some of her earlier works which tended to concentrate more on her slide guitar instrumental sound. The majority of tracks featured here fall more into the alt rock side of things with king providing vocals on the majority of tracks too. There are still a couple of truly beautiful guitar led ambient like instrumentals included, much more reminscent of her earlier albums. Legends of benin-Various artists [1969 to 1981]-A collection of super rare and highly collectable masterpieces recorded between 1969 and 1981 by four legendary composers from benin. Features antoine dougbe, el rego, honore avolonto and gnonnas pedro, each one with their own distinctive sound. A truly storming collection of hard to find african funk sounds compiled by the superb analog africa label. The album features a wonderful collection of distinctly african sounds given a great big blast of seventies american funk, its a superb meeting of two sounds creating a highly original collection. Micragirls-Wild girl walk-The second album from this finnish all girl garage rock outfit for the bone voyage label. This here album is just plain classic good time sixties tinged garage rock, full of fuzzed up distorted guitars and cheesy hammond organ sounds. The girls also add in a bit of that classic sixties motown sound to the mix along with just a hint of fuzzed up country punk. Its full of wild raw energy, a sound of three girls having a real good time in the studio. Definitely one for fans of catchy garage rock / pop and the likes of billy childish or holly golightly. Its nice to see her going back to the sounds of the debut album, this one is all about her truly stunning voice again with just the barest of musical accompaniment. Its an album deeply rooted in traditional folk sounds, both english and american with plenty of nods back towards an old english victorian kind of vibe. If you are a novice to this womans overall sound then try to imagine a slightly more rustic sounding kate bush playing a harp, if anything newsom is even more kooky than that. This woman possesses one of the most distinctive voices around at the moment, there is no mistaking who you are listening to right from the first note. As ever its full of dramatic bursts of strings and piano, there is little else going on musically which really allows you to enjoy the truly wonderful lyrics this woman writes. Her songs are more like miniature short stories, there is nothing simple about the kind of songs this woman writes and that has always been something that makes you come back to her albums all the time. This is nothing short of beautiful, and believe me its not short but for such a long album its does seem to pass rather quickly. Its not often you can say this about a triple album but this is nothing short of perfect, just over two hours of pure bliss. This is her first for the chemikal underground label, a label which she co founded way back in 1995. The album features a really beautiful blend of gentle indie pop and piano based folk pop. Its an album with lots of hints of seventies folk pop and just a hint of the kooky drama of someone like kate bush. Its must be said you would definitely know you were still listening to an ex member of the delgados, there is something very distinctive about her songs. Quasi-American gong [with bonus download coupon]-Brand new album from this american outfit formed by janet weiss [sleater kinney] and sam coomes [heatmiser]. Formed way back in 1993 the band have been operating as a two piece for many many years now and are joined on this album by new member joanna bolme [stephen malkmus & the jicks]. Its been a long four year wait for long time fans, their previous album when the going gets dark came out on the domino label in 2006. The album features eleven bursts of guitar heavy classic indie rock sounds, full of fuzzed up guitar action falling somewhere between pavement and dinosaur jr with just a little hint of the psychedelic sounds of the flaming lips. Its classic american indie rock at its very finest, full of melodic pop and some blazing guitar solo action. The album features a truly superb blend of jangly guitar based eighties like indie pop and sixties garage psyche pop sounds, drenched in reverb with just the right amount of lo fi fuzziness. Its full of intricate guitar work, kind of reminds me of orange juice meets the byrds on a slightly more psychedelic buzz. This is a real gem of a jangly guitar driven pop album, full of infectiously catchy songs that just get better and better with every listen. Necks, the-Silverwater-The first studio album in nearly three years from this australian based avant rock outfit. This is probably one of the finest avant garde post rock albums of the year, its a late contender but a truly awesome one it is too. It features a truly hypnotic blend of downbeat post rock, avant garde jazz and ambient space rock. The album features just one single piece clocking in at a massive 67 minutes, but dont worry there is no chance of you getting bored at any point. Its an album that reminds me in spirit to the classic miles davis album in a silent way blended with the kind of loose post rock sounds of early godspeed and the kind of dark doom jazz of bohren and der club of gore. Its an ever evolving piece of music with moments of pure space age synth led jazz, post rock minimalism and so much more that i could write all day about this one. Its fair to say these guys really do know how to stretch the boundaries of avant rock and post rock to such a degree that i cant think of anybody else that even comes close to being able to achieve such brilliance. Pop ambient-Pop ambient 2010 [with bonus cd copy]-Brand new edition of this wonderful ongoing series of gentle ambient sounds from the german kompakt label. Features a collection of all new and mostly exclusive material. The album features tracks from marsen jules, brock van wey / bvdub, triola, wolfgang voigt, the orb, mikkel metal, dj koze, jurgen paape, dettinger, thomas fehlmann and popnoname. Its one of those perfect collections of totally laid back and blissful ambient pop music. Its pure headphone music full of gentle beats and glitchy soundscapes, dont let the word pop in the title put you off, this aint cheesy chart music we are dealing with her. Rolling stones-Let it bleed [180 gram vinyl reissue]-Reissue on 180 gram vinyl featuring all the original artwork including the inner sleeve. This album was originally released in 1969 and features let it bleed, love in vain by robert johnson, midnight rambler, gimmie shelter, you got the silver, you cant always get what you want, live with me, monkey man and country honk. Remastered from the original analog sources for this vinyl reissue. Road Records new releases February 18th 2010
Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.
The end [or beginning] of another busy week here in Road Records and yet again its another fine week for new releases. I have to say we really have been spoilt this year so far.
First up is our album of the week pick and it should come as no surprise to you all when we tell you we have gone for the amazing new Quasi album. We have been longtime fans here in the shop, a band that never get the recognition they truly deserbe so we are trying to rectify that one. The album is in stock now on cd for only €13.50, it’s a limited edition double cd so get your hands on it quickly as they will sell out rapidly and then it will revert to the normal single cd version. We will have some lovely vinyl copies for you next week sometime.
Another favourite of ours [and on Domino aswell] are Archie Bronson Outfit, they are back with just a new single this week, the album will be with us in the next week or two [I’m personally very excited about this one].
The brand new Efterklang album is out now and on special offer for only €12.99 on cd and €16.99 on vinyl.
The new Girls single is just a perfect slice of fuzzed up indie rock, we really love it.
Speaking of singles we really love, our single of the week this weeks goes to the new 7” from Gil Scott-Heron. The track is “Me And The Devil” which is actually a cover of an old Robert Johnson tune.
Post rock fans [especially bands like Godspeed, Dirty 3, Rachels, Tortoise] should invetigate the new Slow Six album out now on the Western Vinyl label.
Another nice [but strange] new album in this week from Los Angeles duo VoicesVoices, comes highly recommended if you fancy a bit of Animal Collective meets shoegazing action. The album was produced by Prefuse 73.
Fans of Dublin based hardcore outfit Knifed will be delighted to hear that the Stitchy Press label have just released a vinyl only discography of the band. The album is limited to only 300 copies and comes pressed on three different colours, collect em all if you want.
The debut album from Holly Miranda is another to catch our attention this week, its on special offer for only €12.99 on cd and €16.99 on double vinyl.
The Lonelady album on Warp Records is now in stock an its also on special this week, the cd is €12.99 and the vinyl just €13.99.
My weekly list of vinyl albums that come with digital download coupons is limited to just one album this week and that is from Efterklang, pity they don’t all come with them but that’s not my decision to make, hopefully a day will come when all vinyl pressings will have them.

Quasi-American gong [limited edition double cd version]-Brand new album from this american outfit formed by janet weiss [sleater kinney] and sam coomes [heatmiser]. Formed way back in 1993 the band have been operating as a two piece for many many years now and are joined on this album by new member joanna bolme [stephen malkmus & the jicks]. Its been a long four year wait for long time fans, their previous album when the going gets dark came out on the domino label in 2006. The album features eleven bursts of guitar heavy classic indie rock sounds, full of fuzzed up guitar action falling somewhere between pavement and dinosaur jr with just a little hint of the psychedelic sounds of the flaming lips. Its classic american indie rock at its very finest, full of melodic pop and some blazing guitar solo action. This is a band equally happy making beach boys like piano led indie pop as they are at producing fuzzed up garage rock tunes, a much underrated band which may just change as soon as you hear this gem of an album. The album will come with an extra bonus disc [so far so good, a quasi anthology] featuring thirteen classics from their back catalogue. February 2010-2cd-Domino-€13.50

At last an atlas-From which we were raised [with limited bonus cd]-The debut full length release on the slow loris label from dublin based artist at last an atlas. Its pretty much a one man band centred around hollows member greg o brien, with just a little help from some friends. Greg previoulsy released a limited edition split mini album on the slow loris with singer songwriter paul o reilly. This is a truly beautiful collection of intimate downbeat electronic folk like sounds, lots of gentle throbbing beats, lush synth sounds and hushed vocal tones. For some reason his material always reminds of a more stripped down grandaddy, like some late night take on their sound with a bit of elliott smith blended in. Its a beautiful dreamlike collection of intimate electronic pop sounds, it almost reminds me of the kind of thing that you would expect to hear from the morr music label, you know that kind of gentle late night pop sound they specialise in. Gently pulsating electronic folk pop at its very very finest. Comes with a limited edition free four track bonus cd. Only the first 100 copies will come with a bonus cd so get your orders in quick. The bonus cd comes in a handmade screen printed sleeve and features four exclusive tracks recorded specially for this release. The releases on this label are always a thing of real personal beauty, those still trying to track down the awesome wagtail original sleeve will testify to that. Field music-Field music measure-Field music are a kind of psychedelic indie pop sounding outfit hailing from sunderland and based around the songwriting skills of brothers peter and david brewis. Peter is also a member of the week that was whilst david also moonlights in school of language. This is their third album to date and the follow up to tones of town from 2007 [also on the memphis industries label]. The album is a wonderfully happy and highly intricate collection of sounds, in spirit they do kind of remind me a bit of the beach boys in the way they can deliver something so infectiously bouncy and musically deft at the same time. With the album clocking in at over 70 minutes you can expect many twists and turns, with some tracks offering up some truly lush orchestral pop whilst others are just perfect guitar driven psyche pop. Its also an album with plenty of complicated post rock like influences, they are one of the few bands i know who can actually turn post rock into something that the kinks would be proud to put their name to. At times its almost like a brief history of rock music from the past with references to the beatles, blue nile, fleetwood mac, the kinks, king crimson, led zeppelin, prince and plenty more inbetween. Sit back and revel in some truly beautiful laid back classic rock music. The album comes as a special edition double cd in a gatefold sleeve with foldout printed inner. Sollee, ben and daniel martin moore-Dear companion-Dear companion is a brand new collaboration between kentucky based musicians ben sollee and martin. The pair are ably assisted on production by yim yames from my morning jacket [he pretty much plays on all the album too]. The album explores their ties to the appalachian mountains and in particular deals with the impacts of mountain top removal [coal mining] on the people and heritage of the appalachia region. Its a lovely laid back collection of mostly acoustic based modern country / folk sounds, full of old traditional roots influences. February 2010-Cd-Sub pop-€12.99
Strange boys-Be brave-Hailing from austin texas this is the second album from the strange boys, their first for rough trade. The previous album [and the girls club] was released on the american label in the red. The album features a great collection of raw and loose garage country like sounds, full of fuzzed up rootsy barroom rock sounds like some old country punk band from the late sixties. Try to imagine the black lips with a slightly more country roots like edge to them. Its all good rock'n'roll fun. February 2010-Cd-Rough trade-€12.99

I was a king-I was a king-Brand new album from this norwegian based indie rock outfit on the hype city label. Nedry-Condors-The debut album from this new london based trio on the monotreme label. The album features a gorgeos lush fusion of ambient electronica, instrumental post rock and dubstep vibes. Nedry are matt parker, chris amblin and ayu okakita. Its the kind of album that really sounds like it shouldnt work on paper, mixing dubstep rhythms and post rock normally have no place on an album together, but it actually does in a strange way. At times reminscent of bjork with a bit of massive attack thrown in. Its full of crunchy electronica, live guitar sounds and lots of heavy dubstep rhythms. February 2010-Cd-Monotreme-€13.99
Neel, matthew-New maps of hell-The debut solo album from english born singer songwriter matthew neel. The album features a really lovely collection of mostly acoustic based folk / americana sounds. Neel is joined by luke brighty, ricky barber, jimmy shewbridge, martina sorbara and colette o leary. At times the album is kind of reminiscent of some early lambchop with maybe just a bit more of a rootsy pop vibe going on. Parks dept-No noise-The parks dept is primarily a one man band centred around northampton based music luke farmer. No noise is the second release from farmer as parks dept and his first to feature a full six piece live band, including drums. An album of funky electronic pop sounds with hints of post punk and new wave thrown in. Comparable at times to some daft punk stuff with hints of lcd soundsystem and even early new order. I wont describe it as electronic rock because that always makes it sound rather cheesy but maybe clever electronic new wave would be better. February 2010-Cd-Kookydisc-€9.99

Puerto muerto-Drumming for pistols-Brand new album from this husband and wife duo christa meyer and tim kelley. The album features a collection of rootsy americana meets swampy blues with plenty of strange twists and turns along the way. Whilst the album doesnt actually sound like tom waits it does kind of remind me of him in spirit, just the way they can pluck different sounds and gel them all together, one track sounds like kurt weill covered by a swamp blues band. At times quite dramatic and others it just plain rocks. A highly rewarding listen that just refuses to be pigeonholed in any way, always a good thing. February 2010-Cd-Fire records-€13.99
Quasi-American gong [limited edition double cd version]-Brand new album from this american outfit formed by janet weiss [sleater kinney] and sam coomes [heatmiser]. Formed way back in 1993 the band have been operating as a two piece for many many years now and are joined on this album by new member joanna bolme [stephen malkmus & the jicks]. Its been a long four year wait for long time fans, their previous album when the going gets dark came out on the domino label in 2006. The album features eleven bursts of guitar heavy classic indie rock sounds, full of fuzzed up guitar action falling somewhere between pavement and dinosaur jr with just a little hint of the psychedelic sounds of the flaming lips. Its classic american indie rock at its very finest, full of melodic pop and some blazing guitar solo action. This is a band equally happy making beach boys like piano led indie pop as they are at producing fuzzed up garage rock tunes, a much underrated band which may just change as soon as you hear this gem of an album. Scott-heron, gil-Me and the devil-The first single to be taken from his most recent album im new here. Its the second track from the album and i have to say its also one of my favourites. Kind of reminds me a wee bit of some early massive attack tracks, in particular the ones they recorded with horace andy on vocals. It features a simple pounding beat, electronic string sounds and scott-herons beautifully raw soulful vocal delivery. The single comes backed with an exclusive alternate version of me and the devil on the flip side [nyc orchestral version]. Slow six-Tomorrow becomes you-The return of this new york based experimental post rock / electronic outfit, the previous album on the new albion label was very much a classical based album but this one sees them going back to their more post rock like roots. Its still very much a collection of classical tinged post rock sounds though, at times reminscent of tortoise jamming with steve reich, full of repetitive but slowling evolving rhythms and melodies. There are also plenty of moments that will appeal to fans of the likes of the rachels or the dirty three and possibly even the lighter side of godspeed you black emperor. Its highly intricate stuff, almost classical like with several different rhythms vying for your attention. Post rock fans will rejoice at this, one of the finer releases in this genre in quite some time. February 2010-Cd-Western vinyl-€13.99
Sollee, ben and daniel martin moore-Dear companion-Dear companion is a brand new collaboration between kentucky based musicians ben sollee and martin. The pair are ably assisted on production by yim yames from my morning jacket [he pretty much plays on all the album too]. The album explores their ties to the appalachian mountains and in particular deals with the impacts of mountain top removal [coal mining] on the people and heritage of the appalachia region. Its a lovely laid back collection of mostly acoustic based modern country / folk sounds, full of old traditional roots influences. February 2010-Cd-Sub pop-€12.99

Voicesvoices-Origins-The second release from this los angeles based experimental duo featuring nico turner and jenean farris. The album was recorded and mixed in new york by guillermo scott herren [aka prefuse 73]. The album features some beautifully floaty almost ambient like sounds, think early animal collective fronted by two girls with a mild obsession with early nineties shoegazing sounds. Its quite psychedelic and rather dreamlike at times, full of reverb laden sound effects and hushed almost wordless vocals. One or two of the more dubby like sounds actually remind me a bit of the classic seefeel sound, ambient dubby electronica meets ethereal shoegazing. Lovely stuff. February 2010-Cd-Manimal-€9.99

The album features a lovely collection of downtempo rootsy folk sounds, country tinged pop and just got old fashioned acoustic folk. Four tet-There is love in you-Kieran hebden returns with his first new full length album in four years and his fifth album as four tet to date. The album features the recent single love cry. This is definitely an album that sees the trademark four tet folktronica sound slowly move towards something more akin to minimal / ambient techno. The beats are somewhat more propulsive on this collection, whilst still beautifully gentle at the same time. Musically this is as good and familiar as the past few four tet albums but there is definitely a gentle shift towards a more ambient techno like vibe. This album also seems to feature a lot less of the acoustic guitar strumming of earlier outings, now replaced with moog like sound effects and lots of vocal sampling. As ever this man makes music that works both on dancefloors and laying on the couch, there are not many you can say that about in this particular genre. January 2010-Cd-Domino-€12.99

The album features the recent single love cry. This is definitely an album that sees the trademark four tet folktronica sound slowly move towards something more akin to minimal / ambient techno. The beats are somewhat more propulsive on this collection, whilst still beautifully gentle at the same time. Musically this is as good and familiar as the past few four tet albums but there is definitely a gentle shift towards a more ambient techno like vibe. This album also seems to feature a lot less of the acoustic guitar strumming of earlier outings, now replaced with moog like sound effects and lots of vocal sampling. As ever this man makes music that works both on dancefloors and laying on the couch, there are not many you can say that about in this particular genre. Pallett, owen [final fantasy]-Heartland [comes with bonus digital download coupon]-The artist formerly known as final fantasy returns with his third solo outing to date, he is now recording under his own name due to some stupid legal case taken against him for using the final fantasy name. His first album came out way back in 2005 [has a good home] and was followed by the exceptional second album he poos clouds in 2006. It may be nearly four years since his last album but its fair to say pallett has been busy with other projects in the meantime. Along with touring as a one man band pallett has also provided string arrangements for several bands including grizzly bear, arcade fire, beirut, last shadow puppets and mountain goats. This is his first album to be released on the domino label. This is an album of true orchestral beauty, probably one of the most lush collections your are likely to hear all year round. Known for his superb violin playing this album features what sounds to my ears like a full blown orchestra at times, full of dramatic string and horn bursts. Its an album the flows seamlessy through many genres with such each too. Sometimes you think you could be listening to some modern take on steve reich or phillip glass and before you know it things turn into some kind of indie broadway musical [ala sufjan stevens maybe]. Its highly intricate and joyously catchy at the same time, full of layered string sounds and palletts gentle almost hushed vocal delivery. Its one of those rare albums that comes up with something new each time you listen to it, sometimes classical pop and sometimes just pure classic quirky indie pop. Its got to be said this is something truly original. The album is pressed on double 180 gram vinyl and comes in a lovely heavy card gatefold sleeve. Tape and bill wells-Fugue-Vinyl only release of this new mini album from scottish musician bill wells and swedish trio tape. Limited to only 900 copies and comes with a free digital download coupon. Along with his outfit the bill wells trio, bill wells has worked with many artists over the last few years including isobel campbell, mark lanegan and of course appeared on my album of the year from the pastels last year. Tape are a swedish based electronic trio and released the wonderful luminarium album on the thrill jockey label last year. The album features four beautifully mellow pieces of instrumental music based around some gently minimal guitar picking, lush electric piano and of course wells jazz tinged brass playing. The tracks sound like some long lost film soundtrack, at times reminding me a little of the music for betty blue, full of dark atmospheric vibes and stark minimalism. Its definitely one for fans of the minimalist jazz like sounds of bands like bohren and der club of gore. January 2010-Lp-Thrill jockey-€12.99
Twinkranes-Spektrum theatre snakes-The long awaited debut album from this dublin based three piece finally hits the shelves, courtesy of the twisted nerve label. The album was co produced by voice of the seven woods frontman ricky tomlinson. An album i have to admit has totally blown us away here in the shop and a real late contender for our irish album of the year. On first listen this is a real gem for lovers of all things krautrock but its only after repeated listens that the many many layers and sounds really begin to reveal themselves. It is definitely based in the kind of hypnotic repetitive sounds of seventies krautrock but dig deeper and you will hear bits of space rock, prog, pure psychedelia and even the kind of crazed early electronic trickery of the bbc radiophonic workshop. Featuring a truly propulsive rhythm section laying grooves down for some dr who like sound effects, these guys are not afraid to let loose and totally rock out from time to time too. Vampire weekend-Contra [with free foldout poster]-New york based vampire weekend return with their second album for the xl label and the long awaited follow up to their self titled debut from 2008. Its another incredibly catchy selection of tracks which sees the band yet again seamlessy blend african beats and rhythms with catchy melodic indie rock. Its full of intricate yet highly catchy african like guitar rhythms, almost baile funk like electronic beats and psychedelic tinged indie pop. There really is nothing to compare these guys to, people talk about the graceland influences but these guys take that sound off into far too many tangents to warrant any comparisons to paul simon. At the heart of this album is a very very clever pop record subsequently layered with tons of african and psyche pop sounds. A much more sophisticated and lush affair than their debut but you wont be let down by it. The album comes with a giant foldout poster inside the sleeve printed on heavy paper. The end [or beginning] of another busy week here in Road Records and yet again its another fine week for new releases. I have to say we really have been spoilt this year so far.
First up is our album of the week pick and it should come as no surprise to you all when we tell you we have gone for the amazing new Quasi album. We have been longtime fans here in the shop, a band that never get the recognition they truly deserbe so we are trying to rectify that one. The album is in stock now on cd for only €13.50, it’s a limited edition double cd so get your hands on it quickly as they will sell out rapidly and then it will revert to the normal single cd version. We will have some lovely vinyl copies for you next week sometime.
Another favourite of ours [and on Domino aswell] are Archie Bronson Outfit, they are back with just a new single this week, the album will be with us in the next week or two [I’m personally very excited about this one].

The new Girls single is just a perfect slice of fuzzed up indie rock, we really love it.
Speaking of singles we really love, our single of the week this weeks goes to the new 7” from Gil Scott-Heron. The track is “Me And The Devil” which is actually a cover of an old Robert Johnson tune.
Post rock fans [especially bands like Godspeed, Dirty 3, Rachels, Tortoise] should invetigate the new Slow Six album out now on the Western Vinyl label.
Another nice [but strange] new album in this week from Los Angeles duo VoicesVoices, comes highly recommended if you fancy a bit of Animal Collective meets shoegazing action. The album was produced by Prefuse 73.
Fans of Dublin based hardcore outfit Knifed will be delighted to hear that the Stitchy Press label have just released a vinyl only discography of the band. The album is limited to only 300 copies and comes pressed on three different colours, collect em all if you want.
The debut album from Holly Miranda is another to catch our attention this week, its on special offer for only €12.99 on cd and €16.99 on double vinyl.
The Lonelady album on Warp Records is now in stock an its also on special this week, the cd is €12.99 and the vinyl just €13.99.

Quasi-American gong [limited edition double cd version]-Brand new album from this american outfit formed by janet weiss [sleater kinney] and sam coomes [heatmiser]. Formed way back in 1993 the band have been operating as a two piece for many many years now and are joined on this album by new member joanna bolme [stephen malkmus & the jicks]. Its been a long four year wait for long time fans, their previous album when the going gets dark came out on the domino label in 2006. The album features eleven bursts of guitar heavy classic indie rock sounds, full of fuzzed up guitar action falling somewhere between pavement and dinosaur jr with just a little hint of the psychedelic sounds of the flaming lips. Its classic american indie rock at its very finest, full of melodic pop and some blazing guitar solo action. This is a band equally happy making beach boys like piano led indie pop as they are at producing fuzzed up garage rock tunes, a much underrated band which may just change as soon as you hear this gem of an album. At last an atlas-From which we were raised [with limited bonus cd]-The debut full length release on the slow loris label from dublin based artist at last an atlas. Its pretty much a one man band centred around hollows member greg o brien, with just a little help from some friends. Greg previoulsy released a limited edition split mini album on the slow loris with singer songwriter paul o reilly. This is a truly beautiful collection of intimate downbeat electronic folk like sounds, lots of gentle throbbing beats, lush synth sounds and hushed vocal tones. For some reason his material always reminds of a more stripped down grandaddy, like some late night take on their sound with a bit of elliott smith blended in. Its a beautiful dreamlike collection of intimate electronic pop sounds, it almost reminds me of the kind of thing that you would expect to hear from the morr music label, you know that kind of gentle late night pop sound they specialise in. Gently pulsating electronic folk pop at its very very finest. Comes with a limited edition free four track bonus cd. Only the first 100 copies will come with a bonus cd so get your orders in quick. The bonus cd comes in a handmade screen printed sleeve and features four exclusive tracks recorded specially for this release. Field music-Field music measure-Field music are a kind of psychedelic indie pop sounding outfit hailing from sunderland and based around the songwriting skills of brothers peter and david brewis. Peter is also a member of the week that was whilst david also moonlights in school of language. This is their third album to date and the follow up to tones of town from 2007 [also on the memphis industries label]. The album is a wonderfully happy and highly intricate collection of sounds, in spirit they do kind of remind me a bit of the beach boys in the way they can deliver something so infectiously bouncy and musically deft at the same time. With the album clocking in at over 70 minutes you can expect many twists and turns, with some tracks offering up some truly lush orchestral pop whilst others are just perfect guitar driven psyche pop. Its also an album with plenty of complicated post rock like influences, they are one of the few bands i know who can actually turn post rock into something that the kinks would be proud to put their name to. At times its almost like a brief history of rock music from the past with references to the beatles, blue nile, fleetwood mac, the kinks, king crimson, led zeppelin, prince and plenty more inbetween. Sit back and revel in some truly beautiful laid back classic rock music. The album comes as a special edition double cd in a gatefold sleeve with foldout printed inner. Sollee, ben and daniel martin moore-Dear companion-Dear companion is a brand new collaboration between kentucky based musicians ben sollee and martin. The pair are ably assisted on production by yim yames from my morning jacket [he pretty much plays on all the album too]. The album explores their ties to the appalachian mountains and in particular deals with the impacts of mountain top removal [coal mining] on the people and heritage of the appalachia region. Its a lovely laid back collection of mostly acoustic based modern country / folk sounds, full of old traditional roots influences. February 2010-Cd-Sub pop-€12.99
Strange boys-Be brave-Hailing from austin texas this is the second album from the strange boys, their first for rough trade. The previous album [and the girls club] was released on the american label in the red. The album features a great collection of raw and loose garage country like sounds, full of fuzzed up rootsy barroom rock sounds like some old country punk band from the late sixties. Nedry-Condors-The debut album from this new london based trio on the monotreme label. The album features a gorgeos lush fusion of ambient electronica, instrumental post rock and dubstep vibes. Nedry are matt parker, chris amblin and ayu okakita. Its the kind of album that really sounds like it shouldnt work on paper, mixing dubstep rhythms and post rock normally have no place on an album together, but it actually does in a strange way. At times reminscent of bjork with a bit of massive attack thrown in. Its full of crunchy electronica, live guitar sounds and lots of heavy dubstep rhythms. February 2010-Cd-Monotreme-€13.99
Neel, matthew-New maps of hell-The debut solo album from english born singer songwriter matthew neel. The album features a really lovely collection of mostly acoustic based folk / americana sounds. Neel is joined by luke brighty, ricky barber, jimmy shewbridge, martina sorbara and colette o leary. At times the album is kind of reminiscent of some early lambchop with maybe just a bit more of a rootsy pop vibe going on. The album features some really excellent acoustic guitar picking action, fans of everything from ryan adams to fountains of wayne will just love this one. February 2010-Cd-Scratchy records-€13.99
Parks dept-No noise-The parks dept is primarily a one man band centred around northampton based music luke farmer. No noise is the second release from farmer as parks dept and his first to feature a full six piece live band, including drums. An album of funky electronic pop sounds with hints of post punk and new wave thrown in. Comparable at times to some daft punk stuff with hints of lcd soundsystem and even early new order. I wont describe it as electronic rock because that always makes it sound rather cheesy but maybe clever electronic new wave would be better. February 2010-Cd-Kookydisc-€9.99

The album is like some great big mix of seventies and eighties metal sounds taking in the likes of black sabbath, iron maiden and the prog of deep purple. The album does have a somewhat stoner metal kind of feel about it at times, like a more melodic sabbath meets queens of the stoneage. Puerto muerto-Drumming for pistols-Brand new album from this husband and wife duo christa meyer and tim kelley. The album features a collection of rootsy americana meets swampy blues with plenty of strange twists and turns along the way. Whilst the album doesnt actually sound like tom waits it does kind of remind me of him in spirit, just the way they can pluck different sounds and gel them all together, one track sounds like kurt weill covered by a swamp blues band. At times quite dramatic and others it just plain rocks. A highly rewarding listen that just refuses to be pigeonholed in any way, always a good thing. February 2010-Cd-Fire records-€13.99
Quasi-American gong [limited edition double cd version]-Brand new album from this american outfit formed by janet weiss [sleater kinney] and sam coomes [heatmiser]. Formed way back in 1993 the band have been operating as a two piece for many many years now and are joined on this album by new member joanna bolme [stephen malkmus & the jicks]. Its been a long four year wait for long time fans, their previous album when the going gets dark came out on the domino label in 2006. The album features eleven bursts of guitar heavy classic indie rock sounds, full of fuzzed up guitar action falling somewhere between pavement and dinosaur jr with just a little hint of the psychedelic sounds of the flaming lips. Its classic american indie rock at its very finest, full of melodic pop and some blazing guitar solo action. This is a band equally happy making beach boys like piano led indie pop as they are at producing fuzzed up garage rock tunes, a much underrated band which may just change as soon as you hear this gem of an album. Scott-heron, gil-Me and the devil-The first single to be taken from his most recent album im new here. Its the second track from the album and i have to say its also one of my favourites. Kind of reminds me a wee bit of some early massive attack tracks, in particular the ones they recorded with horace andy on vocals. It features a simple pounding beat, electronic string sounds and scott-herons beautifully raw soulful vocal delivery. The single comes backed with an exclusive alternate version of me and the devil on the flip side [nyc orchestral version]. Slow six-Tomorrow becomes you-The return of this new york based experimental post rock / electronic outfit, the previous album on the new albion label was very much a classical based album but this one sees them going back to their more post rock like roots. Its still very much a collection of classical tinged post rock sounds though, at times reminscent of tortoise jamming with steve reich, full of repetitive but slowling evolving rhythms and melodies. There are also plenty of moments that will appeal to fans of the likes of the rachels or the dirty three and possibly even the lighter side of godspeed you black emperor. Its highly intricate stuff, almost classical like with several different rhythms vying for your attention. Post rock fans will rejoice at this, one of the finer releases in this genre in quite some time. February 2010-Cd-Western vinyl-€13.99
Sollee, ben and daniel martin moore-Dear companion-Dear companion is a brand new collaboration between kentucky based musicians ben sollee and martin. The pair are ably assisted on production by yim yames from my morning jacket [he pretty much plays on all the album too]. The album explores their ties to the appalachian mountains and in particular deals with the impacts of mountain top removal [coal mining] on the people and heritage of the appalachia region. Its a lovely laid back collection of mostly acoustic based modern country / folk sounds, full of old traditional roots influences. February 2010-Cd-Sub pop-€12.99

Voicesvoices-Origins-The second release from this los angeles based experimental duo featuring nico turner and jenean farris. The album was recorded and mixed in new york by guillermo scott herren [aka prefuse 73]. The album features some beautifully floaty almost ambient like sounds, think early animal collective fronted by two girls with a mild obsession with early nineties shoegazing sounds. Its quite psychedelic and rather dreamlike at times, full of reverb laden sound effects and hushed almost wordless vocals. One or two of the more dubby like sounds actually remind me a bit of the classic seefeel sound, ambient dubby electronica meets ethereal shoegazing. Lovely stuff. February 2010-Cd-Manimal-€9.99
Williams, kathryn-The quickening-The eight studio album from the former mercury award nominee kathryn williams, her first for one little indian. The album was pretty much recorded live in the studio. Joining williams on the recording are leo abrahams, kate st john, antony kerr, simon edwards, martyn barker, neill maccoll, david wrench, marry waterson and emma latham. The album features a lovely collection of downtempo rootsy folk sounds, country tinged pop and just got old fashioned acoustic folk. Pallett, owen [final fantasy]-Heartland [comes with bonus digital download coupon]-The artist formerly known as final fantasy returns with his third solo outing to date, he is now recording under his own name due to some stupid legal case taken against him for using the final fantasy name. His first album came out way back in 2005 [has a good home] and was followed by the exceptional second album he poos clouds in 2006. It may be nearly four years since his last album but its fair to say pallett has been busy with other projects in the meantime. Along with touring as a one man band pallett has also provided string arrangements for several bands including grizzly bear, arcade fire, beirut, last shadow puppets and mountain goats. This is his first album to be released on the domino label. This is an album of true orchestral beauty, probably one of the most lush collections your are likely to hear all year round. Known for his superb violin playing this album features what sounds to my ears like a full blown orchestra at times, full of dramatic string and horn bursts. Its an album the flows seamlessy through many genres with such each too. Sometimes you think you could be listening to some modern take on steve reich or phillip glass and before you know it things turn into some kind of indie broadway musical [ala sufjan stevens maybe]. Its highly intricate and joyously catchy at the same time, full of layered string sounds and palletts gentle almost hushed vocal delivery. Its one of those rare albums that comes up with something new each time you listen to it, sometimes classical pop and sometimes just pure classic quirky indie pop. Its got to be said this is something truly original. The album is pressed on double 180 gram vinyl and comes in a lovely heavy card gatefold sleeve. Tape and bill wells-Fugue-Vinyl only release of this new mini album from scottish musician bill wells and swedish trio tape. Limited to only 900 copies and comes with a free digital download coupon. Along with his outfit the bill wells trio, bill wells has worked with many artists over the last few years including isobel campbell, mark lanegan and of course appeared on my album of the year from the pastels last year. Tape are a swedish based electronic trio and released the wonderful luminarium album on the thrill jockey label last year. The album features four beautifully mellow pieces of instrumental music based around some gently minimal guitar picking, lush electric piano and of course wells jazz tinged brass playing. The tracks sound like some long lost film soundtrack, at times reminding me a little of the music for betty blue, full of dark atmospheric vibes and stark minimalism. Its definitely one for fans of the minimalist jazz like sounds of bands like bohren and der club of gore. January 2010-Lp-Thrill jockey-€12.99
Twinkranes-Spektrum theatre snakes-The long awaited debut album from this dublin based three piece finally hits the shelves, courtesy of the twisted nerve label. The album was co produced by voice of the seven woods frontman ricky tomlinson. An album i have to admit has totally blown us away here in the shop and a real late contender for our irish album of the year. On first listen this is a real gem for lovers of all things krautrock but its only after repeated listens that the many many layers and sounds really begin to reveal themselves. It is definitely based in the kind of hypnotic repetitive sounds of seventies krautrock but dig deeper and you will hear bits of space rock, prog, pure psychedelia and even the kind of crazed early electronic trickery of the bbc radiophonic workshop. Featuring a truly propulsive rhythm section laying grooves down for some dr who like sound effects, these guys are not afraid to let loose and totally rock out from time to time too. Vampire weekend-Contra [with free foldout poster]-New york based vampire weekend return with their second album for the xl label and the long awaited follow up to their self titled debut from 2008. Its another incredibly catchy selection of tracks which sees the band yet again seamlessy blend african beats and rhythms with catchy melodic indie rock. Its full of intricate yet highly catchy african like guitar rhythms, almost baile funk like electronic beats and psychedelic tinged indie pop. There really is nothing to compare these guys to, people talk about the graceland influences but these guys take that sound off into far too many tangents to warrant any comparisons to paul simon. At the heart of this album is a very very clever pop record subsequently layered with tons of african and psyche pop sounds. A much more sophisticated and lush affair than their debut but you wont be let down by it. The album comes with a giant foldout poster inside the sleeve printed on heavy paper.
