Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

Another busy week around here in Road Records. We had the amazingly talented C. Joynes in earlier in the week for a rather stunning acoustic in store and if you get this in time we will have Wallis Bird on Thursday [30th July] at 6.30pm.
Antony and the Johnsons have a limited edition 7” out this week featuring his rather bizarre cover of “Crazy In Love” by Beyonce, we don’t have many so get ordering quickly. Another single on the limited edition list comes from former Arab Strab man Malcolm Middleton, his new single “Zero” comes on white vinyl and there are also sure to run out pretty quickly. The classic Aphex Twin collection “Selected Ambient Works” has just been remastered and is now reissued, its been out of print for a few years now. The new Cornershop single is now in stock and we will hopefully have copies of their brand new album tomorrow too. James Blackshaw fans should take note of his new project under the name “Brethren Of The Free Spirit” in collaboration with Dutch lute player Jozef Van Wissem. The new Billy Childish double cd retrospective is now in stock, we have already run out of the triple vinyl version but we will have more by the end of next week, promise. God Help The Girl have a new single out this week, a brand new version of “Funny Little Frog” which appeared on a Belle And Sebastian album a few years back. Interpol fans probably are already aware of the fact that their singer Paul Banks has a new project going at the moment under the name of Julian Plenti, the debut album is now in stock and the cd is on special offer this week for only €12.99. There is a real treat instore for fans of mellow late night electronica this week with highlights coming from Manual, Melodium and also Library Tapes. There is a new [and very very limited] 10” out this week as part of the Blast First Petite series of Suicide tributes, this one features doom rock legends Sunn O with Pan Sonic. We have managed to get our hands of some of the white vinyl pressings of the recent Pains Of Being Pure At Heart album. The former God Machine frontman Robin Proper Sheppard is back with a new album under his Sophia moniker, the album comes on cd and vinyl with a limited edition double cd also in stock. The new Wild Beasts album on Domino is on special offer this week for only €12.99 on cd, we will have some vinyl copies next week sometime for you. We are cheating again with our single of the week as we are giving the award to a mini album rather than a single [sorry]. Yim Yames aka Jim James from My Morning Jacket has just released a six track mini album of George Harrison covers and its so beautiful that we have decided to pretend its only a single. Fans of Aidan Baker [Nadja] will love his new project under the name ARC, the album features a live collaboration between Baker, Christophe Kukiel and Richard Baker. Julian Cope has a new band and a new album out this week under the name of Black Sheep, the album is now in stock on double cd and double vinyl on the Invada label. Finally, our album of the week goes to a new Dublin based outfit called Legion Of Two. The band featues the many talents of former Decal member Alan O’Boyle and drummer / percussionist David Lacey, its released on the Planet Mu label and features a sublime mix of old doom rock, dub and darkly evil electronica.

Julian plenti-Julian plenti is skyscraper-Julian plenti is basically a new solo project from interpol frontman paul banks. Recorded in 2008 in brooklyn with the help of mike stroud from ratatat, sam fogarino also of interpol and striker manley from stiff jesus. It shouldnt really come as any great surprise to know that quite a lot of this album actually sounds rather like interpol albeit in a slightly more subdued stripped down mood. There are plenty of guitar heavy new wave moments in here but banks also takes the mood down a notch with a few piano led ballads almost calling to mind some of the later talk talk sounds. Try to imagine interpol without drums with little bits of added post rock elements and plenty of shimmering shoegaze like guitars. July 2009-Cd-Matador-€12.99

Legion of two-Riffs-Brand new project fronted by the former decal member alan o boyle and joined by irish based percussionist david lacey. This is an album of both haunting and dreamlike sounds with hints of early godflesh mingling with some lovely ambient shoegazing like vibes. At times it kind of reminds me of a slightly heavier take on the likes of jesu. Sounding like the most evil doom rock transferred to fuzzy analog synths with lots of dreamy shimmering guitar effects. The odd track even delves into some trance like mix of doom rock and synthy prog with some truly evil bass sounds. Its all quite hypnotic and almost dubby when put together featuring the perfect battle between live drums and heavily processed electronic sounds. Lightning dust-Infinite light-The second album from lightning dust on the jag jaguwar label. The band is basically an offshoot of black mountain, featuring members amber webber and joshua wells. The album features some lovely laid back rootsy kind of folk based sounds with the odd hint of the likes of mazzy star or marissa nadler from time to time. Their use of lots of lush string sounds on some tracks gives the album a lovely orchestral feel. July 2009-Cd-Jag jaguwar-€13.99

Side one features sunn o and pan sonic covering the suicide classic che. The flip side features a live version of thirteen crosses recorded in 2008 by alan vega and also a version of goodbye darling by stephen burroughs from head of david. Features hand stamped outer sleeve with the main artwork printed inside the actual sleeve. Limited to a total of 3000 copies worldwide. July 2009-10"-Blast first petite-€9.99

Wild beasts-Two dancers [special offer, normally retails at €16.99]-Wild beasts return with their second album for the domino label, the follow up to limbo panto from 2008. Features the recent single hooting and howling. Now heres a band that really bring me back to the heyday of classic jangly indie guitar sounds with a sound sometimes reminscent of the smiths crossed with orange juice whilst also calling to mind the shimmering reverb laden guitar sounds of the likes of felt. What really makes these guys stand out from the crowd is the almost falsetto voice of hayden thorpe, a man who almost seems to possess two voices. His deeper tones really remind me of edwyn collins but when he hits those high notes it almost becomes like some kind of jangly guitar led indie soul. There is also an element of intricate guitar led post rock about the album with lots of shimmering guitar interplay going on. July 2009-Cd-Domino-€12.99

Yim yames-A tribute to george harrison-Six track mini album from the man better known to us as jim james aka the frontman with my morning jacket. The album features six george harrison penned tracks from the past given a brand new lease of life in a very distinctive my morning jacket style. The album features just jim james and his acoustic guitar. Its a collection of covers given a total country roots twist sounding like it was recorded in a church with tons of rustic naturaly sounding reverb. Features long long long, love to you, my sweet lord, ballad of sir frankie crisp and all things must past. Comes in a lovely card sleeve. July 2009-Cd-Rough trade-€9.99

The tracks were all written by neil hannon from divine comedy and thomas walsh from pugwash. The album features a collection of tracks dedicated to the world of cricket. Hannon and walsh are joined on the recording by cathy cavey, phil jupitus, alesander armstrong and matt berry. So what could divine comedy and pugwash sound like jamming together. The answer to that is exactly as you would imagine. The album has tons of that beatles like sunshine pop that pugwash do so so well blended with the kind of dramatic chamber pop of mr neil hannon. An album of beatiful acoustic pop songs and laid back piano led ballads even incorporating hints of summer time reggae just for that added bit of sunshine. There are plenty of that hannon speciality with piano led almost vaudeville like tunes especially on the utterly addictive track jiggery pokery. Its pretty much a match made in heaven for lovers of top quality intelligent pop music. And the answer is no, you dont need to know anything about cricket to appreciate it. Aphex twin-Selected ambient works [1985 to 1992]-This legendary and highly influential collectin of ambient sounds has been out of print for a few years now. The album has now been digitally remastered specially for this reissue. Features the original 13 tracks in the exact order as they appeared. Its one of those gems that really needs no introduction from me. If modern electronica is your preferred taste then we recommend you check out one of the originators of the genre. Arc-Glassine 1 [featuring aidan baker]-Features aidan baker from nadja, richard baker and christopher kukiel. The album features four pieces of droning ambience recorded live at the ambient ping in toronto in 2006. The album has a lovely atmospheric kind of spacial feel about it with lots of shimmering guitar sounds, chimes, bells, swirling drones, tablas and echoing synth effects. At times the album kind of delves into a murky almost psychedelic middle eastern vibe. Comes in a lovely printed card sleeve. July 2009-Cd-A silent place-€14.99

Chad, tim and sherry-Mono love-Tim chad and sherry features members of silver jews and lambchop. The album is some kind of strange hybrid of early rootsy country rock sounds, hall and oates, beck and talking heads. Its full of rather quirky country tinged pop sounds. Along with tim chad the band also features pete cummings, james grau, chet roberts, josh guntel, zack wilson and tye bellar. There are times when the only way to describe this is lounge americana if that makes sense to anybody as funky beats and synth sounds meet rootsy pop. July 2009-Cd-2000 records-€14.99

Childish, billy-Archive from 1959 [the billy childish story]-51 track compilation celebrating the rather lengthy career of billy childish. The album goes right back to his first band the pop rivets which he started in 1977. Along with his own solo career childish has been in some truly seminal garage rock and punk outfits throughout the years and this collection features some of the top cuts from those bands. Unlike the sub pop collection from a few years back this album just concentrates on music, so no poetry or spoken word here. The album features many tracks that have been out of print for years now and a couple of previously unreleased gems thrown in too. Features tracks from the buff medways, the mbes, the milkshakes, thee headcoats, the pop rivets, thee mighty caesars, jack ketch and the crowmen, kyra, the chatham singers, billy childish and the singing lions, the delmonas and billy childish solo. This man is probably one of the most important figures on the english garage rock and punk scene since the late seventies, a man who has always stayed true to his beliefs regardless of any trends. Cornershop-The roll off characteristics of history in the making-Limited edition one sided 7 inch with the flip side featuring an etching by jeffrey lewis. The first single to be taken from their brand new album coming out in a few weeks on ample play records. Within seconds of this hitting the decks it was like they have never gone away. This is an utterly infectious slice of pure sunshine indie pop sounding exactly like cornershop which is pretty much what you want to hear from a new cornershop single. Die die die-Promises promises [limited edition clear vinyl pressing]-The second album from this new zealand based outfit. The album features a blistering collection of post punk sounds with a bit of everything from the melodic post hardcore of husker du to discordant early no wave sounds of sonic youth to the pure explosive punch of the pixies. Its a great mix of totally fuzzed up guitars, propulsive drums and howling shouty vocals. Its a perfectly no fuss collection which just gets straight to the point like all the classic post punk records with plenty of snarling attitude along the way. The album originally came out on cd late last year but this is the first time its been available on vinyl. Limited edition clear vinyl pressing. July 2009-Lp-Saf records-€12.99

God help the girl-Funny little frog-Limited edition 7 inch pressing of this track taken from their self titled album, only 500 copies are available. The band are headed for belle and sebastian frontmant stuart murdoch and this track features vocals from washington based singer brittany stallings. Long time fans will recognise this track from the life pursuit album by belle and sebastian, the track has now been reworked complete with string section. Also features marys market on the flip side. July 2009-7"-Rough trade-€4.50

Here we go magic-Here we go magic-Here we go magic is pretty much a one man band featuring the skills of multi instrumentalist luke temple. Its an album of looping hypnotic psyche pop sounds that will excite fans of the likes of animal collective, panda bear and grizzly bear. Its a really really catchy collection of lo fi bedroom indie pop sounds with lots of looping hypnotic beats and sound effects layered behind live guitars and vocals. Temple also takes in elements of krautrock and afro beat along the way veering into some synth led kind of ambient pop. Beautifully clever stuff. July 2009-Cd-Western vinyl-€17.99

Johnston, james and philippe petit-Fiends with a face-The first collaboration between james johnston and philippe petit. James johnston is probably the more familiar you, he is one of the longtime members and frontman of gallon drunk. Philippe petit has released works under his own name and also runs bip hop / pandemonium rdz. He also c0mposes for strings of consciousness. The album was recorded as a kind of hommage to the golden era of horror movies and features nice pieces of haunting darkly gothic like sounds. You can almost imagine this fitting into the final scene of films like the texas chainsaw massacre. Features lots of distorted bowed sound effects, church organs and nightmare like electronic sound effects. July 2009-Cd-Dirter promotions-€14.99

Kane, jonathan-Jet ear party [double vinyl]-Jonathan kane was one of the founder members of legendary underground rock outfit swans and this is the second full length solo release from one of the finest drummers around at the moment. Backed again by his live band february. Kane plays guitars, drums and bass throughout with igor cubrilovic joing on guitars, anthony kane on harmonica, david watson on bagpipes, lisa b burns on vocals and peg simone on vocals. The album is a mostly intrumental voyage of dirge like dusty blues sounds as kane takes elements of rootsy americana and throws it into the blender with lots of avant rock vibes. Its not quite blues and its not quite post rock but is truly hypnotic and all rather original too. Double vinly pressing, one of which is black and the other is clear red. Library tapes-Fragment-Library tapes aka david wenngren is joined by peter broderick on three tracks and sylvain chauveau on one. The album features eight truly beautiful piano based pieces falling somewhere between pure abstract minimalism and modern classical. The sounds of harold budd spring to mind whilst listening to this perfectly subdued little gem of an album. Wenngren also adds in the most subtle electronic sound effects deep in the mix to create soundscapes akin to the likes of fennesz swirling around in the background. July 2009-Cd-Kning disk-€10.99

Lisa o piu-When this was the future-A beautiful collection of haunting laid back psyche folk tinged sounds from this swedish based singer songwriter on the subliminal label. This is her debut full length studio album for the subliminal sounds label. Its an album that very much harks back to the psyche folk heyday of the late sixties and early seventies with hints of both traditional american and english folk. Pains of being pure at heart-Pains of being pure at heart [limited edition white vinyl]-The debut album from this four piece indie pop outfit on the fortuna pop label. There is no one better than the fortuna pop label at keeping the true authentic spirit of jangly indie guitar pop alive these days. This is an album that takes in elements of pretty much every classic band from the late eighties and early nineties. Its almost plays like a greatest hits of sounds made famous on the legendary c86 cassette release from years back. Get a great big melting pot and add the pastels, my bloody valentine, the jesus and mary chain, the shop assistants, the mighty lemon drops, the wedding present, early teenage fanclub and you have one of the finest collections of retro indie pop i have heard in quite some time. The album owes a lot to the former sounds of indie pop but really when it sounds this good who actually cares. Painting petals on planet ghost-Fallen camellias-The second full length album from this outfit centred around brothers maurizio and roberto opalio from my cat is an alien. Also features praxinoscope vocalist ramona ponzini. The album features a truly beautiful collection of drone based avant folk sounds calling to mind the likes of christina carter or charalambides. Its has a lovely haunting ethereal feel about it with gently plucked acoustic guitars evoking the early days of john fahey as ponzini then layers her echoing vocals over this. The words are all based around the works of japanese poet yosano akiko. Its a beautifully fragile and intimate collection which sees the human voice being used more as an instrument creating a kind of chant like effect over the sounds of wind chimes, japanese bells and glockenspiel. Reynolds, ben-How day earnt its night-Ben reynolds is an english based solo steel string guitarist and member of trembling bells. This is his second solo album. The album is released on the always reliable tompkins square label. This is another instrumental guitar gem to add to your ever growing tompkins square collection. Its an album steeped in the old takoma steel string guitar sound with hints of both john fahey and robbie basho. Fans of the more modern sounds of james blackshaw will love this mans hypnotic guitar playing ways. Reynolds incorporates elements of older traditional american folk and blues along with just some gentle hints of middle eastern folk. July 2009-Cd-Tompkins square-€16.99

Scott, tom james-School and rivers-The second full length album from tom james scott for the bo weavil label, having already released the truly beautiful red deer album for them in 2007. The album features sixty minutes of beautifully calm solo acoustic guitar sounds that will definitely appeal to fans of eveyrthing from older john fahey to the more modern vibes of james blackshaw. Scott uses sparse acoustic guitar picking with the gentlest of minimal piano accompaniment. He is also joined on two of the five tracks by david aird on tuba giving the sounds a lovely drone like bass heavy feel. Its very much an album thats falls into the sparse minimal category dipping into drone and psyche folk along the way too. If you are a fan of the bo weavil label and its sounds then this one certainly wont disappoint. Comes in a lovely card gatefold sleeve. July 2009-Cd-Bo weavil-€12.99

Sewer election-Kassettmusik-Sewer election is gothenburg based artists dan johansson. The album was recorded pretty much entirely live using contact mic, cassette loops and cassette amplifier. Features one rather lenghty 42 minute piece of improvised noise with lots of scratchy sound effects gently trickling along as all manner of looped sounds waft in and out of the mix. Its actually quite hypnotic stuff as some of the loops create this ever repeating rhythm almost sounding like some broken down analog synth. There are elements of the glitchy sound effects of the likes of christian fennesz towards the middle of the piece as gentle watery sounds take over and you feel like you are out on lake late at night surrounded by nature. The album features a lovely intimate collection of rootsy folk sounds with hints of both psyche folk and lo fi bedroom indie folk. Wild beasts-Two dancers [special offer, normally retails at €16.99]-Wild beasts return with their second album for the domino label, the follow up to limbo panto from 2008. Features the recent single hooting and howling. Now heres a band that really bring me back to the heyday of classic jangly indie guitar sounds with a sound sometimes reminscent of the smiths crossed with orange juice whilst also calling to mind the shimmering reverb laden guitar sounds of the likes of felt. What really makes these guys stand out from the crowd is the almost falsetto voice of hayden thorpe, a man who almost seems to possess two voices. His deeper tones really remind me of edwyn collins but when he hits those high notes it almost becomes like some kind of jangly guitar led indie soul. There is also an element of intricate guitar led post rock about the album with lots of shimmering guitar interplay going on. July 2009-Cd-Domino-€12.99

There is a haunting evil kind of vibe going on with this album, almost coming across like some claustrophobic soundtrack to a long lost horror b movie. Heathers-Here not there-The debut album from this new dublin based outfit featuring sisters ellie and louise macnamara. The album is released on the new dublin based label hide away records. Backed by just one guitar this two teenagers possess some of the finest voices i have head in ages. The album features some truly amazing vocal harmonies delivered with just the perfect amount of youthful exuberance. With a sound deeply rooted in traditional folk music this pair also dip into a bit of anti folk along the way aswell as just a hint of sixties protest folk. Throw in a bit of the vocal harmonies of either the mamas and papas or simon and garfunkel and you have one of the finest acoustic folk albums to come out of this country so far this year. Katie kim-Twelve-The debut solo album from this irish based singer katie sullivan. She was also a former vocalist with indie rock outfit dae kim along with former ten speed racer member terry cullen. This is a beautifully intimate collection of songs centred around sullivans beautifully husky voice. The album has a similar kind of intimacy to the likes of mazzy star with hints of the early aggression of pj harvey or the more folky based late night feel of cat power. The album features some lovely background instrumentation with subtle touches of slide guitar, brushed drums and mellow electronic effects. Its that kind of eclectic collection that reminds of the glory days of labels like 4ad and their collaborative this mortal coil projects. Yngve-Tell men this-The debut full length album from this irish based singer songwriter released through his own label. The album features eleven rather superb country and folk tinged mellow pop songs with hints of traditional bluegrass, early blues and pure old style country music. The album features guest vocals from bennie reilly which gives the album a lovely old style nashville flavour just like when johnny cash and june carter used to do. The album kind of reminds of the modern country sounds of the likes of neko case meets josh ritter. Comes in a lovely package featuring carbon neutral and recycled paper. Zz top-Fandango [limited 180 gram vinyl reissue]-Originally released in 1975 on the warners label, this was their follow up to the tres hombres album. The album is basically two albums together. The first side features an unedited live show from the warehouse in new orleans without the assistance of studio gimmicks, as it states on the back of the sleeve. The second side features zz top back in the studios and features gems like tush, heard it on the x along with nasty dogs and funky kings, blue jean blues, balinese and mexican blackbird. I hope you are in good health today, its Friday aleady and I am running late so lets crack on with the news.

Some news on an upcoming instore here in the shop next week. We will have English based instrumental guitarist Chris Joynes playing here in the shop on Tuesday 28th of July at 2.30pm. Chris will be launching his excellent new mini album on the Rusted Rail label. As always, its free and you are all welcome to come and enjoy his rather beautiful music. More details below. Our weekly clubnight in Hogans Bar will see Talulah Does The Hula take to the decks from 9pm onwards on Sunday night, it’s totally free and I’m pretty sure it will be a real fun filled night. Our album of the week this week is another fine Irish release from Wallis Bird. This just shows the strength of Irish music at the moment as this is now our fifth time to give album of the week to an Irish album, previous winners have been Julie Feeney, Adrian Crowley, Duckworth Lewis Method and Super Extra Bonus Party. The first 50 copies of the album have been signed specially for us by Wallis so get your orders in early, the album will be on sale for only €11.99 for one week. Big thanks to Wallis for taking the time out to come in and sign them for us. The new Bowerbirds album is now on special offer on cd for only €12.99. San Diego band Crocodiles caught my attention with their fuzzed up psyche rock collection on the Fat Possum label, think Jesus And Mary Chain meets Suicide. If, like me, you don’t really know much about the African garage rock scene then I highly recommend the new compilation “Gazumbi” out this week on the No Smoke label. The recent Gentleman Losers album is now in stock on cd on the City Centre Offices label, vinyl came in last week, and it’s a real treat for lovers of laid back electronica. The Jonsi And Alex album [Sigur Ros] is now in stock on vinyl, these copies are very limited and come in a rather beautiful card sleeve with rounded corners. The Low Anthem album is now in stock on vinyl, sorry its taken a bit longer than expected. The Meat Puppets recent album “Sewn Together” is now in stock on psychedelic marble effect vinyl. The most recent Tinariwen album “Imidiwan” has just arrived on vinyl, the cd came in a few weeks back. The Duke And The King album is well worth your attention too. The band is centred around Felice Brothers member Simon Felice and former George Clinton collaborator Robert “Chicken” Burke. It’s a beautiful collection of country soul sounds and its on special offer for this week for only €12.99. The album features a lovely laid back blend of acoustic rootsy americana and pure soulful pop sounds, at times it sounds like some long lost seventies soul record. Its kind of reminds me of the byrds if they had signed to the motown label in the seventies and were backing maybe otis redding or marvin gaye. There is also a lovely kind of country soul feel to the record with hints of that old nashville twang haning around. July 2009-Cd-Loose-€12.99

Jonsi and alex-Riceboy sleeps [limited edition double vinyl]-Brand new side project fronted by sigur ros mainman jonsi along with graphic designer alex somers, he is the man who designed the artwork for the sigur ros album takk. The album features nine pieces of truly sublime mostly instrumental sounds which at times are almost borering on modern classical. Its full of swirling synth drone effects and shimmering guitar sounds with tons of lush strings courtesy of sigur ros collaborators amiina. It really is a rather beautiful collection of calming sounds with the kind of minimal ambience that sigur ros fans will adore from the first note. Its also an album that will definitely appeal to fans of the ambient sounds of the likes of brian eno and even to lovers of the touch label. The album is rather beautifully presented in a card gatefold sleeve with rounded corners and is pressed on two heavy slabs of vinyl. One of the most unusual looking sleeves of the year so far. Duckworth lewis method-The duckworth lewis method [featuring neil hannon from divine comedy and thomas walsh from pugwash]-A brand new collaborative project from two of our finest irish songwriters around at the moment. The tracks were all written by neil hannon from divine comedy and thomas walsh from pugwash. The album features a collection of tracks dedicated to the world of cricket. Hannon and walsh are joined on the recording by cathy cavey, phil jupitus, alesander armstrong and matt berry. So what could divine comedy and pugwash sound like jamming together. The answer to that is exactly as you would imagine. The album has tons of that beatles like sunshine pop that pugwash do so so well blended with the kind of dramatic chamber pop of mr neil hannon. An album of beatiful acoustic pop songs and laid back piano led ballads even incorporating hints of summer time reggae just for that added bit of sunshine. There are plenty of that hannon speciality with piano led almost vaudeville like tunes especially on the utterly addictive track jiggery pokery. Its pretty much a match made in heaven for lovers of top quality intelligent pop music. And the answer is no, you dont need to know anything about cricket to appreciate it. Bowerbirds-Upper air-Album number two from this roots and folk based two piece on the dead oceans label. The bowerbirds are a north carolina based two piece featuring phil moore and beth tacular. These guys kind of remind me of some of the more rustic sounds of bonnie prince billy, the slighly psyche folk rumblings of devendra banhart and the slightly more lush string led vibes of iron and wine. Its full of beautifully intimate rootsy folk sounds with a lovely kind of rustic feel about it featuring lots of strings and piano sounds. July 2009-Cd-Dead oceans-€12.99

Clues-Clues-The debut album on the constellation label from this new montreal based outfit fronted by former unicorns and angels morts members alden penner and brendan reed. Rooted in noisy post punk and no wave sounds this is an album with so many twists and turns that tracks can range from full on blistering post punk to mellow piano led balladry. As is always the way with constellation releases this is an album that refuses to be pigeonholed into any particular genre. Features moments of bursting post rock, avant garde psyche folk, arcade fire like euphoric indie rock, acoustic folk, chamber pop and angular no wave noise. A challenging and always rewarding listen. Crocodiles-Summer of hate-The debut album for this san diego based two piece for the fat possum label. Features nine slices of totally fuzzed up indie psyche rock sounds. The album features a modern twist on the sounds of early jesus and mary chain, the velvet underground, spacemen 3 and suicide. Its full of stripped bare psychedelic garage rock sounds interspersed with throbbing analog synths, distorted electronics, heavily treated vocals and pulsating organs. Imagine spacemen 3 in a totally sixties garage rock mood with alan vega from suicide on vocals. The end result is this totally evil sounding dark edged almost gothic like surf rock. Dirty french psychedelics-Various artists-Compiled by guillaume sorge and clovis goux aka dirty sound system. This compilation could propably have been given the longer title of dirty french psychedelic pop as it deals with a much more mellow pop side of seventies psychedelia. These are the type of artists that would have had a huge influence on the sounds of the likes of phoenix and air. A beautifully mellow collection of spaced out pop sounds. Features christophe, bernard lavilliers, karl heinz schafer adn arabian, brigitte fontaine, dashiell hedayat, cortex, nino ferrer, jean jacques dexter, ilous and decuyper, alain kan, francois de roubaix and cheval fou. Eno moebius roedelius-After the heat-Originally released in 1978 this was brian enos second album of collaborative works with dieter moebius and hans joachim roedelous from cluster. Dieter moebius was also a member of krautrock outfit harmonia. The recording also features holger czukay from can on bass. The album features a beautiful collection of ambient krautrock synth sounds. Gentleman losers-Dustland-Finnish siblings samu and ville kuukka return with a long overdue follow up to their rather excellent self titled album on the city centre offices label from 2006. Its another superbly beautiful blend of the live organic sounds and gentle electronic trickery. If anything this has a little more live instrumentation on it compared to the previous album and sees the introduction of scratchy guitars to create some kind of doom jazz take on the sounds of the godspeed or do make say think. Its still a very dark slow moving collection of sounds with lots of haunting piano layered over some lush strings and all manner of scratchy sound effects. These guys really are in a league of their own and sound like nothing else you have heard before. Jonsi and alex-Riceboy sleeps [limited edition double vinyl]-Brand new side project fronted by sigur ros mainman jonsi along with graphic designer alex somers, he is the man who designed the artwork for the sigur ros album takk. The album features nine pieces of truly sublime mostly instrumental sounds which at times are almost borering on modern classical. Its full of swirling synth drone effects and shimmering guitar sounds with tons of lush strings courtesy of sigur ros collaborators amiina. It really is a rather beautiful collection of calming sounds with the kind of minimal ambience that sigur ros fans will adore from the first note. Its also an album that will definitely appeal to fans of the ambient sounds of the likes of brian eno and even to lovers of the touch label. The album is rather beautifully presented in a card gatefold sleeve with rounded corners and is pressed on two heavy slabs of vinyl. One of the most unusual looking sleeves of the year so far. Low anthem-Oh my god charlie darwin [limited edition vinyl pressing]-The second full length album from the low anthem and their first for their new label bella union. The album features a rather beautiful collection of laid back rootsy folk sounds and the odd bit of full on barroom rootsy rock n roll. Its a hauntingly intimate collection of mostly acoustic based sounds with some lovely slide guitar and fiddle action. The album has a lovely rustic feel about it with some gentle country vibes comparable to the likes of whiskeytown and the alt country scene that followed them. Its also got hints of the likes of red house painters, my morning jacket and even elliott smith. Its one of those rare quiet gems thats both perfectly sombre and strangely uplifting at the same time. Meat puppets-Sewn together [limited edition marble vinyl]-The words return to form are used a little too often nowadays with so many bands from the past reforming but i have to admit this one really hits the spot for me. Brothers chris and curt kirkwood got back with drummer ted marcus for some shows last year and then went into the studio to record this new collection. Its never going to be like the early days but this one will do just fine in our opinion. Its a much more polished sound compared to the classic early albums but its still full of country tinged psyche rock, post punk and classic alt rock. The lyrics at times are still as crazed as ever and its also got to be said guitarist curt kirkwood is in truly stunning form on this one. Still as clever and intricate as ever. Its a beautifully collection of intimate and brittle folky based sounds with tons of added strings. At times they kind of remind me a bit of belle and sebastian with just a bit more added folk meets the kind of kooky off kilter pop of st vincent. The album now comes repackaged with a massive 16 bonus tracks featuring 13 previously unreleased tracks and 3 from ultra rare 7 inch only releases. Its got a similar rustic quality to early bonnie prince billy, songs ohia or phosphorescent buts it the voice that makes if differ from all of the above. Vernon makes superb use of multilayered vocals making it sound like the beach boys doing acoustic gospel music. Features the rescored man of aran film on dvd and the new soundtrack on cd. The band have recorded a brand new soundtrack to the original man of aran film from 1934. The film was made by the late american filmaker robert j flaherty about life on the aran islands on the west coast of ireland. The film won the grand prix at the 1935 venice film festival and was cut from half a million feet of raw black and white footage. The album features some lovely ambient like sounds with lots of spacial echoing guitar effects and washes of brass and strings. Its a very dramatic collection of sounds and nothing remotely like any previous british sea power records. Both haunting and rather beautiful at the same time. Cocker, jarvis-Further complications-Brand new solo album from the former singer with pulp. The album was produced by steve albini in his chicago studios. This is probably the most rocking collection from cocker in his lengthy career as both a solo artist and with pulp. Maybe its albinis influence but this is a full on guitar heavy rock album sounding more like jarvis cocker fronting bowies old band with hints of early roxy music thrown in. Thats just for starters though as kelleher takes in elements of psyche folk, animal collective like psyche pop, can like krautrock experimentalism and some of the ethereal new wave of this mortal coil. As y0u can guess from the wide range of references this is not an easy album to pigeonhole and thats always a good thing with us. There are intimate acoustic folk songs, throbbing analog krautrock and psychedelic electronica sounds going on and its a real treat for music fans that want something just a little bit different. Rollers sparkers-Hames-Rollers sparkers are a dublin based collective making some weird and wonderful electronic sounds. The album is based around 16 tracks recorded at various improvised sessions between 2005 and 2006. The sounds were then edited and enhanced in studio. Soap and skin-Lovetune for vacuum-Soap and skin is the work of one very talented 18 year old austrian artist by the name of anja plaschg and this here is her damn fine and rather kooky debut album. At times the album is kind of like a dark goth tinged take on the dramatic sounds of antony and the johnsons with some added old time german cabaret vibes. In other places she kind of reminds me of a slightly darker kate bush blended with the haunting ethereal sounds of marissa nadler. The album is full of lots of dramtic mostly piano led ballads with plenty of subtle electronic trickery added in deep in the mix. A beautifully quirky debut. May 2009-Cd-Pias-€14.99

Speck mountain-Some sweet relief-The return of one of our favourite bands around here at the moment and their first for the carrot top label. The previous album summer above came out last year on the peace frog label. Its another delicious slice of modern folkiness with hints of the classic ethereal sounds of mazzy star and the rambling slowcore of either galaxy 500 or low. What these guys add to truly stand out from the crowd is the stunning voice of marie claire balabanian sounding like hope sandoval with a slight country twang. It really is the voice of an angel as far as we are concerned. The album features some haunting slow building electric folk sounds with lots of shimmering guitar sounds and lovely warm organ vibes. The album is another super collection of kooky off kilter indie pop sounds with hints of bjork, kate bush, chamber pop, scuzzy indie rock, piano led ballads and string led cinematic sounds. The album features lots of orchestral backing tracks as clark then weaves her multitracked voice in and out with totally dramatic effect. Its one of those rare little gems that just impossible to pigeonhole into any particular genre so take my advice and have a listen. May 2009-Cd-4ad-€15.99

Super furry animals-Dark days light years-A real return to form in our opinion from one of our all time favourite bands around here. This one really brings us back to the pure psyche pop sounds of phantom power and its jam packed with some of the catchiest tunes that this welsh outfit have penned in many years. When these guys find a groove they really know how to lash out the funky psyche rock sounds with plenty of tracks bringing me back to the classic sounds of singles like golden retriever and rings around the world. Its obvious their time off in various solo and side projects has given them a whole new lease of life again. April 2009-Cd-Rough trade-€13.99

T woc-Delayed responses [volume one]-Limited edition three track ep from this irish based electronic producer mick donohoe on the alphabet set label. Features dogman, old and grey and also maghreb. The first track features some superb modern freaky reggae sounds coming on like lee perry meets the modern dubstep of digital mystikz. Its full of wobbly bass sounds and big echoing drum patterns. The flip side carries on the dubby theme with another slice of heavy dubstep with a somewhat space age feel about it. This is some seriously high quality dubstep that labels like tempa or soul jazz would go mad for. February 2008-12"-Alphabet set-€8.99

T woc-Delayed responses [volume two]-The second in a series of releases from irish dubstep producer mick donohoe aka t woc. The ep features believe, attica blue and burn up the herb featuring brother culture. This guy just gets better and better with every track he releases in our opinion. The opening track believe is one of the finest pieces of wobbly bass led dubstep we have heard in ages and finally a bit of competition for the likes of skream. This kind of reminds me of the kind of dubstep sounds that lee perry would make. Awesome stuff that will shake the very foundations of your house. The album also comes with a bonus cd featuring all three tracks from the vinyl the ten track bonus mix collection takin without consent. October 2008-12"-Alphabet set-€8.99

This is the kit-Krulle bol-This is the debut album from english born folk singer kate stables. The last time we heard from stables was on her truly exceptional two wooden spoons single for the sunday best label. Thankfully there is a new recording of that track on this album along with eleven other true gems. Stables is also a member of folk duo whalebone poly. The album was produced by john parish who also assists on a couple of tracks. This really is a most beautiful collection of intimate sombre folk sounds with hints of early cat power and elements of early seventies british folk sounds. Fans of the recent nancy elizabeth album on the leaf label will quite simply adore this one. The majority of tracks feature just stables haunting voice and gently guitar picking with the most subtle brushed drums added from time to time. Possibly one of the finest folk albums of the year so far. August 2008-Cd-Microbe-€18.99

Tinariwen-Imidiwan [companions]-Album number four from this desert blues outfit. The album was recorded in the remote desert village of tessalit in the sahara desert. Limited edition with bonus dvd featuring a 30 minute film all about the recording of the album. This is a beautifully hypnotic blend of blues guitar style picking and african rhythms. There is also a little bit of a middle eastern vibe going on in the mix. Try to imagine some early american blues sounds transported to the sahara desert and given an injection of african roots music. June 2009-2cd-Independiente-€15.99

Vampire weekend-Vampire weekend-New york based outfit now signed to the xl label with their infectiously catchy new take on the sounds of quirky indie rock. These guys have everything from the edgy indie rock of the likes of arcade fire or broken social scene to the bass driven slighly funky post punk of talking heads with little hints of funky afro jazz thrown in for good measure. Pure guitar driven alt rock sounds seamlessy and very gently morph into afro tinged funky post punk vibes laced with lush strings. Imagine arcade fire jamming with fela kuti, talking heads and final fantasy. A totally absorbing and highly original souding album. February 2008-Lp-Xl-€14.99

Velvet underground and nico-Andy warhol-Hard to believe this album was originally released way back in 1967. It still sounds so fresh 40 years later, the albums features some pure sixties pop sounds like sunday morning along with their trademark abrasive rock rumblings of tracks like im waiting for the man. This reissue on the new vinyl lovers label comes in the original gatefold sleeve with the famous banana artwork by andy warhol. Also features femme fatale, venus in furs, run run run, all tomorrows parties, heroin, there she goes again, ill be your mirror, the black angels death song and european son. Villagers-Hollow kind-Limited editon four track ep from this former member of dublin indie rock outfit the immediate. Features down under the sea, pieces, the meaning of the ritual and the sun is hanging from a string. Released on the brand new irish based label any other city. Comes in a lovely card digi pack sleeve. The ep features some really beautiful mellow indie rock sounds with a lovely warm intimate fell about it. Whiskeytown-Strangers almanac [double vinyl reissue]-Reissue of their classic third album from 1997 on double vinyl. Comes pressed on heavy vinyl will full colour inner sleeves. Carrying a torch originally light by the likes of gram parsons in the seventies this is still seen as one of the finest and most influential country rock and alternative country albums. The band were fronted by a very young ryan adams at the time. Features inn town, excuse me while i break my own heart tonight, yesterdays news, 16 days, everything i do, houses on the hill, turn around, dancing with the woman at the bar, waiting to derail, avenues, losering, somebody remembers the rose and not home anymore. The album also comes with a four side of music featuring 5 bonus live tracks not on the original version. The tracks were recorded live in the studio for a radio show back in september 1997. White denim-Fits-Album number two from this psychedelic garage rockers on the full time hobby label. The album features a collecton of blistering fuzzed up sixties like garage rock sounds with hints of bass heavy angular post punk, new wave and some kind of skewed noisy prog. Its also got lots of meandering avant rock passages with great big explosions of pure fuzzed up noise melting into the most infectious sixties psyche rock. These guys kind of remind me of the spirit of bands like the mc5 with the way they totally funked up garage punk and injected a real sense of fun into the whole sound. It really is a wonderfully exciting collection and an album that will take you on a journey through several eras of rock in the space of just one song. Comes in a lovely oversized card sleeve.
