Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

This is officially our last mailout of the year so its time for me to thank you all for making this one of the best years in our 13 year existence.

Its been a real rollercoaster this year, it actually seems like such a long time since we were on the brink of closing down and now here we are still doing what we do. Without getting all tearful about it there really is no way I would be writing this today if it wasn’t for all your support so I really do want to say a big thank you from all the staff here [but especially Julie and myself]. I won’t lie, its been hard work getting through this year but at least we can now say we did it and hopefully we can go on from here and I will be writing the same thing this time next year.

The shop will be open this Sunday from 12pm to 5pm

Animal collective-Fall be kind-Brand new five track mini album from the ever brilliant animal collective, none of these tracks have appeared anywhere before. The album features graze, what would i want? Sky, bleed, on a highway and i think i can. According to the press release with the album the real coup for this collection is the first ever officially cleared grateful dead sample to be used on a record, now theres a fact im sure you didnt know. The album sees the band go back just a little to their more experimental early days, full of shimmering psychedelia. I think this is the first album in my record collection to feature panpipes [the first i will openly admit to anyway]. These guys must be one of the few bands that can make totally experimental psychedelia that manages to be infectiously catchy at the same time, as ever weird but truly wonderful too. One and a half amazing albums in one year, not many bands you can say that about. December 2009-Cd-Domino-€7.99

Comanechi-Crime of love-Comanechi is fronted by akiko matsura, she also plays drums with the big pink and sings with pre. The album is a really superb slice of lo fi grunged up indie rock. Its like a big blistering blend of early riot girl sounds, grunge rock and classic lo fi indie garage rock. Its full of fuzzed up guitars, distorted to the max and shouty female vocals. Its one of those classic collections of almost shambolic indie rock meets no wave, both ferocious and melodic at the same time. It kinda reminds me of what nirvana would have sounded like if they recorded bleach with a japanese girl screaming throughout. December 2009-Cd-Merok-€12.99

Dutchess and the duke-Sunset sunrise-The second album from jesse lortz and kimberly morrison aka the dutchess and the duke. The album features a lovely laid back blend of rootsy americana and some kind of psyche tinged indie folk rumblings. A mostly acoustic based record calling to mind the likes of the low anthem or even fleet foxes at times, its very much rooted in traditional american folk but given just a subtle modern twist. The album has a lovely rustic almost live in the studio kind of feel about it, you can almost imagine these guys all sitting around a campfire jamming together. Its full of raw emotion and heartfelt folk sounds. December 2009-Cd-Hardly art-€14.99

Its an album of sleazy blues like dirges that will definitely please long time gallon drunk fans with lunch providing vocals throughout. Its full of blistering fuzzed up guitar sounds, sleazy sixties like organ sounds and the very distinctive punk rock snarl of lydia lunch. Its got a perfect sixties meets post punk kind of vibe about it, imagine the kills in a very very bad mood backed by gallon drunk. December 2009-Cd-Sartorial records-€12.99

Cute lepers-Smart accessories-The second album from this seattle based retro rock outfit [on the damaged goods label]. The band are fronted by singer steve e nix from seminal seattle band the briefs. The album features 12 brand new tracks along with recent single berlin girls. The album features a perfect blend of sixties punk rock and classic mod pop vibes, try to imagine the meeting of rocket from the crypt, the buzzcocks and the jam. Its full of blistering old school post punk sounds with a very melodic singalong feel to it. Its good time rock n roll and lots of fun it is too. December 2009-Cd-Damaged goods-€13.99

David cronenbergs wife-Hypnagogues-The return of david cronenbergs wife with their second album for the blang label. Fronted by the sardonic spoken word vocal delivery of stockport born tom mayne. Vocally these guys always remind of something between arab strap and the fall, ranging from pure spoken word to the classic drawl of mark e smith. Musically there are hints of the intricate post rock kind of vibe of the likes of arab strap but these guys also add in lots of clinic like garage psyche influences, post punk and even the odd bit of early velvet underground. Its got to be said its a truly original and distinctive sound, there are obvious influences but these guys do something totally new with them. December 2009-Cd-Blang-€11.99

The main track is a truly superb piece of african tinged psychedelic pop. December 2009-12"-Xl-€7.99

Flaming lips-Embryonic-The flaming lips return with one of their most challenging and strangest collections in quite some time. The album is very much a collection of trippy rhythm led sounds with lots of tunes going way back to the hypnotic sounds of seventies krautrock. There is still plenty of their by now trademark psyche pop sounds but this is definitely an album that will get older fans of the band interested in their sound again. This is the most underground sounding album they have made in many years, and probably one of their finest in our opinion. Its full of hypnotic repetitive beats, psychedelic guitars and space rock like synth sounds. Its beautifully trippy and quite ambient at times. It really is a most wonderful collection of layered complex sounds at times building into thunderous noise before mellowing out into the most beautiful trippy psyche pop. 18 tracks spread over an hour there is something for all flaming lips fans but as i said its definitely one for older fans to reacquaint themselves with a band who never fail to challenge the listener. Features guest spots from karen o [yeah yeah yeahs], mgmt and german mathematician thorsten wormann. Limited edition double vinyl pressing in a heavy card gatefold sleeve. The album comes pressed on two different coloured vinyls [one yellow and one blue] and also features a full copy of the album on cd inside the sleeve. December 2009-2lp-Warners-€25.99

Fraser, elizabeth-Moses-Brand new three track ep from the former voice of the cocteau twins. Is it new or is it old, who knows really, all i can tell you is that i am always very excited when this woman makes any music. The ep features the original version of moses along with remixes from thighpaulsandra and spaceland. Fraser is joined by former spiritualized member damon reece and jake drake brockman [formerly of echo and the bunnymen]. The ep is actually dedicated to drake brockman who sadly passed away in september of this year in a motorcycle accident. The ep is limited to only 900 copies on high quality 180 gram vinyl. December 2009-12"-Rough trade-€7.99

Freedom rhythm and sound-Soul jazz presents revolutionary jazz in the usa 1965 to 1980 [volume one]-This album features many of the major artists featured in a simultaneously released 200 page hardback book, as well as many hidden gems made on very small run cottage industry jazz labels from this period. Pressed on double vinyl this volume features tracks from oliver lake / ntu, stanton davis ghetto / mysticism, steve colson and the unity troupe, mary lou williams, joe henderson, art ensemble of chicago, philip cohran and the artistic heritage ensemble, gary bartz ntu troop, pheerdan ak laff, the hastings street jazz ensemble and ralph thomas. Comes complete with detailed liner notes. December 2009-2lp-Soul jazz-€14.99

Hands up who wants to die / ill eat your face-Split release [with free cd copy]-Limited edition 10 inch only release from the irish based label the richter collective. The album features the first release from irish avant punk outfit hands up who wants to die coming across like some mutant math rock post hardcore mix, imagine jesus lizard and shellac jamming with henry rollins on vocals. Ill eat your face are a cork based two piece featuring drums and guitars. Their side features eight short sharp blasts of punk rock fuelled avant rock sounds coming across like lightning bolt on speed. The album comes packaged with a free cd copy inside the sleeve. December 2009-10"-The richter collective-€10.99

Holcomb, roscoe-The high lonesome sound-A beautiful 21 track collection of his recordings for the smithsonian label, features a host of material from holcomb recorded between 1961 and 1974, this is pure rustic early folk and blues sounds with a man and his banjo, holcomb had a very distinctive and addictive high pitched voice, some call it harsh i just call it authentic, features a rather lovely laid back version of house of the rising sun along with a wonderful take on leadbellys tune in the pines, the album comes presented in the classic old style folkways sleeve, housed in heavy card with a simple printed pull out inner. Its a perfect replica of the original pressings. 2009-Lp-Smithsonian folkways-€21.99

Holy modal rounders-The holy modal rounders [180 gram vinyl reissue]-Originally released in 1964 this is the debut album from greenwich village's strangest folk revivalists. At odds with the tired rehashing of folk tunes that was so in vogue at the time, the duo of peter stampfel and steve weber took traditional material and obliterated it. In the words of peter stampfel "the rounders were the first really bent traditional band. And the first traditionally based band that was not trying to sound like an old record". And thank god for that. Remastered from the original tapes, the debut from the 60s folk revival biggest outcasts-Lp-4 men with beards-€20.99

Hunter gatherer-I dreamed i was a footstep in the trail of a murderer-The debut album from this irish based electronic solo artist. The album features fifteen slices of beautifully haunting ambient electronic sounds. At times reminiscent to a slightly more downbeat and darker take on the sounds of broadcast with just the odd hint of the aphex twin ambient works collections. Its an album of gentle beats over some beautifully minimal synth and keyboard sounds, almost cinematic in scope at times. Its both haunting and calming at the same time, not many albums you can say that about, with a kind of darkly sombre feel to it. Its one of those perfect late night / headphone albums and further proof of the high quality of electronic music being produced in this country at the moment. This would have to rate as one of the finest of the year so far. December 2009-Cd-Own label-€9.99

O doherty, david-Lets david o doherty-Recorded live in front of real human beings here in dublin in whelans of wexford street in august 2009. Olley, chris-A streetcar named disaster-The debut solo album from the former singer with english outfit six by seven. The album was recorded over a six month period in various basements / front rooms on portastudios and sees olley strip his sound right back to the bare essentials. Its very much an album based in a more folk americana like sound compared to his work with six by seven with the majority of tracks featuring olley and acoustic guitar. There are plenty of tracks that remind me of the intimate sombre sounds of the likes of elliott smith with olley then also adding a bit of a seventies psyche folk kind of feel. December 2009-Cd-Long distance runner records-€11.99

Real tuesday weld-The end of the world-This is pretty much considered a live companion piece to his rather awesome london book of the dead album from 2008. Recorded live at the end of the world club in london on the eve of valentines day. The album sees multi instrumentalist stephen coates and his band perform some beautifully stripped down tracks featuring grand piano, strings, organ, flute and vibes. Whilst his recorded material features lots of samples from old gramophone records this is an album of all live material. Its a beautiful mellow kind of jazz tinged sound with hints of early piano blues and vaudeville musical influences. Theres a wonderfully sombre kind of feel about the album, you almost feel transported back to some old smokey basement jazz club in the fifties. The album also features guest vocals from mara carlyle. Comes in a lovely cutout card gatefold sleeve. December 2009-Cd-Six degrees records-€11.99

Richmond fontaine-We used to think the freeway sounded like a river [180 gram pressing]-Branded the kings of americana by uncut magazine, richmond fontaine return with their eight album. Very most, the-A year with the very most-A collection of four seasonal eps released by this idaho based indie pop outfit in digital format throughout the year. The band recorded the four specially themed eps at different stages throughout the year and this is the first time all four have been available together on cd. Walsh, nina-Bright lights and filthy nights-Brand new collection of mostly acoustic based psyche folk sounds from singer songwriter nina walsh. The last time we heard from her was the memos album from 2005. The album kind of brings to mind the minimalist folk sounds of artists like marissa nadler meets the kind of haunting dark vibes of mazzy star. Walsh has added lots of lush cello and woodwind sounds throughout this album with the odd track featuring lots of subtle fuzzed up guitar action in the background. December 2009-Cd-Malicious damage-€11.99

Warpaint-Excuisite corpse ep-The debut mini album from los angeles based outfit warpaint on the manimal vinyl label, their new full length will be released on rough trade next year. The album was mixed by none other than john frusciante from the red hot chilli peppers. Its an album that easily trades between driving post punk and haunting shoegazing tinge psyche folk. There are hints of both mazzy star and cat power in here, particularly on the slower more haunting ethereal like folk songs. There are one or two more uptempo tracks on the album featuring a lovely hypnotic kind of post punk rhythm with hints of the kind of kooky pop of bat for lashes. Really really nice stuff. December 2009-Cd-Manimal vinyl records-€9.99

Young, gabby and other animals-We are all in this together-The debut album from wiltshire born singer songwriter gabby young on the gift of the gab label. Its an album of vast musical scope, constantly changing direction from track to track, theres even a blistering eastern european folk song towards the end. December 2009-Cd-Gift of the gab records-€12.99

Astral social club is a one man outfit featuring scottish born artist neil campbell, he is also a member of sunroof and vibracathedral orchestra. Animal collective-Merriweather post pavillion-Brand new album from animal collective, now on the domino record label.-Cd-Domino-€9.99

Animal collective-Strawberry jam-The one thing i most love about animal collective albums is the total challenge they offer up to people like me trying to describe it to you, yes its quite bonkers but in a totally hypnotic and catchy way, take a bit of the beach boys smile and add in some syd barret solo material along with lots of analog synth sounds and most likely hundreds of other sound effects, the album opens up with the truly superb peacebone single which is one of the finest pieces of psychedelic electronic pop you will hear all year round, the band seem to have this very special knack of holding all their sounds together with their beach boys likes vocal harmonies whilst all sorts of madness is looping around in the background, sixties wah wah like guitar sounds do battle with squelchy synths and moments of the out there rock of the flaming lips, this is probably their most accessible album to date so far and fans of the likes of arcade fire etc should really give this one a little spin as you will be very very pleasantly surprised, an early contender for weird album of the year so far, double vinyl pressing in gatefold sleeve, september 2007-2lp-Domino-€15.99

Atlas sound-Logos-Brand new solo album from bradford cox [frontman with deerhunter]. The album follows up his truly excellent solo album let the blind lead those who can see but cannot feel from last year, also on the 4ad label. This one features a little help from panda bear [animal collective] and laetitia sadier [stereolab]. The album features a wonderful collection of psychedelic skewed pop sounds ranging from intimate lo fi sounds to some truly expansive almost euphoric like indie pop. At times comparable to the likes of animal collective, its probably a little more rustic and lo fi though, whilst also dipping into the world of acoustic psyche folk. October 2009-Cd-4ad-€12.99

Barlow, lou-Goodnight unknown [special offer - normally retails at €14.99]-Brand new solo album from the fairly legendary indie rock star lou barlow [sebadoh and dinosaur jr]. Barlow is joined by melvins drummer dale crover and isaad wasif from the yeah yeah yeahs. The album features a collection of mellow almost folk like acoustic sounds along with plenty of his trademark laid back slacker rock sounds. When he rocks out it really does bring me back to the classic early days of sebadoh or pavement with the more mellow solo based tracks more reminiscent of his folk implosion releases. October 2009-Cd-Domino-€12.99

The album was produced by former faultline member david kosten. Its another haunting and melodic collection of off beat pop songs with lots of kooky electronic sound effects and rhythms. Its very much an album that falls somewhere between the dramatic singer songwriter sounds of kate bush and the more kooky pop of bjork. Camera obscura-My maudlin career [julies album of the year]-I should point out that i have not been as immersed in music this year as in previous ones. However, this will not stop me from nailing my colours to the mast and declaring my album of the year to be camera obscura-my maudlin career. It’s always with a sense of trepidation that one listens to a new album by ones favourite band. The worries are immense -will it be up to their usual exacting standards, will there be a stinky ‘jazz odyssey’ lurking somewhere on the track list, have they discovered religion, or will it be just plain bras. Thankfully camera obscura have not disappointed me, this, their forth album contains all the elements that i have come to expect from my favourite band. Bittersweet lyrics, lush string arrangements and the wonderfully doleful voice of tracyanne campbell. These elements and their continued collaboration with sweden’s jan haapalainen all combine to produce an album which tracyanne herself calls ‘the best we’ve done so far.’ there are as always the singles, classic camera obscura fare-sweet indie pop at its best but these gems including ‘french navy’ are just hooks ensuring that your attention does not waver from the main meat of the album, which is a more assured and confidant outing than previous albums. Comparisons to belle and sebastian now seem trite as camera obscura have continued their upward trajectory entirely on their own merit. I await album number five with my usual sense of trepidation, as befits my favourite band.

Carter family-Im thinking tonight of my blues eyes-This album compiles the very beginning of one of the longest lasting groups of the history of american music. Active from 1927 to 1956, the legendary carter family were originally a trio and dug deeply in the musical tradition of their southwestern virginia, bringing to light a number of gospel and folk songs that made them superstars in their day and later went on to inspire many revival groups of the sixties and seventies. The album features 18 classic early tracks from the carter family, pressed on heavyweight vinyl and comes in a lovely card sleeve courtesy of the wonderful reissue specialist label monk records. November 2009-Lp-Monk-€13.99

Crowley, adrian-Season of the sparks-The return of irish songwriter adrian crowley and the follow up to the stunning long distance swimmer album. The album was produced by stephen shannon and features guest spots from kevin murphy on cello, jarja gaynor on viola, thomas haugh on drums, emma smith on violin, cillian macdonnell on drums and arrangements from london based duo geese. Its a beautiful collection of laid back folky based sounds with some truly haunting pastoral string sounds and luscious church organs. Its perfect late night headphone music with touches of the modern folk sounds of james yorkston, the slow core of low and even the odd hint of leonard cohen. Its like honey for your ears. The album was released earlier this year on the tin angel label and now comes reissued on the ever reliable scottish label chemikal underground. November 2009-Cd-Chemikal underground-€9.99

Davis, greg-Mutually arising-Greg davis returns to the kranky label, his first for the label since somnia in 2004. The album features two lengthy tracks spanning a total of 51 minutes. The ablum features two classic examples of synth based drone music as really only the kranky label know how. What at first sounds like a single note slowly mutates into a truly hypnotic drone, constantly oscillating and changing in pitch in the gentlest way possible. Its slowly sucks you and soon you begin to notice the smallest of sounds hidden deep inside the mix. Its probably best enjoyed on headphones for the full effect. July 2009-Cd-Kranky-€15.99

Department of eagles-In ear park-New project featuring grizzly bear member daniel rossen. Daniel is backed by his friend fred nicolaus plus a bit of help from grizzly bear members chris taylor and chris bear. This is a really catchy and rather eccentric blend of acoustic pastoral pop and pure sunshine psyche pop. There are elements of the beach boys vocal harmonies, the looped repitition of animal collective and the eastern european folk of beirut. The album has a lovely loose kind of rambling feel about it sounding a little like an old fashioned campfire free improv jam all cup up and pasted back together randomly. Its one of those rare albums that really does get beter and better with each listen and should be a must for all fans of animal collective, grizzly bear, beirut and psychedelic pastoral folk. 2008-Cd-4ad-€14.99

Doyle, roger-Cool steel army-Roger doyle is probably one of the leading lights on the modern irish electronic scene and a highly respected composer of modern avant garde classical sounds. This new album features a truly beautiful collection of piano based compositions. The album is split into three separate pieces culminating in a truly awesome 40 minute piece scored for orchestra and female voice. The piece is based around the memoirs of rte symphony orchestras clarinettist adolf gebler. The three lengthy pieces on this album will most definitely appeal to lovers of modern piano based sounds akin to the likes of max richter, harold budd and hauschka. Its all beautifully calming with lots of quirky twists and turns. April 2008-Cd-Psychonavigation-€14.99

Its full of stoner blues rock, lots of mellow repetitive grooves sounding at times like the stooges on a totally stoned vibe. The band basically throw out some truly classic stoner blues riffs and just see where it takes them from there. The album almost sounds like it was just a long jam, and trust me thats a good thing with this kind of music. Fans of early stoner rock sounds will find it hard to track down a better album this year. Imagine the stones and the stooges jamming together endlessy for hours and hours. October 2009-Cd-No quarter-€12.99

Fennesz-Black sea-The high king of glitchy electronica returns with another truly flawless collection of glacial like ambient soundscapes on the touch label. This truly is one of the most beautiful collections of drone based ambient music you will hear all hear. Fennesz possesses this natural ability to gently blend the cold sound effects of highly processed field recordings with the beautifully warm sounds of treated layered guitars. The end result is a swirling slowly oscillating drone that gently caresses your ear. A lot of people try to make this music but nobody comes close to fennesz. 2009-Cd-Touch-€17.99

Johnston, daniel-Is and always was-Is and always was features a collection of brand new studio recordings from underground legend daniel johnston. The album was produced by jason falkner and also features joey waronker on drums. The songs are very much distinctly daniel johnston like whilst long time fans will definitely notice the more lush and coherent production quality. Its a far cry from the old casette home recordings but thankfully the songs dont suffer in any way because of it. Johnston is still very much the mainmain here with waronker providing drums on most tracks and woody jackson adding acoustic guitar on a couple. The album features a collection of beautifully quirky and innocent indie pop / rock sounds. You will either love or hate this mans vocal delivery but its hard to argue with the quality of his songwriting and his particularly surreal take on life through his lyrics. September 2009-Cd-Feraltone-€11.99

Kings of convenience-Declaration of dependence-Its been a four year break since their last album and this is amazingly only their fourth full length album, i suppose they both keep busy with solo work and other things. In particular erlend oye has been making a name for himself with his new band whitest boy alive. This is probably their most stripped down album to date, its pretty much just two lads with their acoustic guitars, no drums or special guests this time. Its got to be said that this new approach totally suits what they do so well. These guys make twee acoustic folk like nobody else can, its almost like an indie folk take on the sounds of simon and garfunkel, full of late sixties / early seventies breezy folk pop. The two lads pretty much add dual vocals on every track creating these really lovely lush vocal harmonies throughout. Fans of the likes of belle and sebastian will rejoice at this collection of really beautiful indie folk pop. I have to admit it is totally addictive stuff. November 2009-Cd-Virgin-€11.99

The album was recorded late last year in chicago with steve albini behind the control desk. This is amazingly his 16th album for the secretly canadian label and his fifth in total as magnolia electric co. This man has long been one of our favourite modern american songwriters and this collection of rootsy country and americana rates right up there with his best material. Its very much a full band effort throughout with molina supported by a fine cast of musicians. The album features some really beautiful laid back country ballads complete with pedal steel guitar and led by molinas perfect nashville tinged vocal delivery. This is definitely an album that will appeal to both lovers of older traditional country and modern americana at the same time. Middleton, malcolm-Waxing gibbous [limited edition hardback book sleeve]-The former arab strap member returns with a brand new solo album. The album features contributions from king creosote and also members of mogwai. This man yet again proves he knows his way around a classic indie rock song or two on this new collection. The album is packed with infectiously catchy hooks and classic jangly indie rock sounds. Wedged between these top notch indie rock sounds are also a couple of beautifully mellow acoustic folk tunes sounding a wee bit more like his old band on a more folky vibe. Its just one of those perfect albums jam packed with quality underground pop sounds and the odd introspective ballad. Comes in a very limited hardback book style sleeve. June 2009-Cd-Full time hobby-€9.99

Molina and johnson-Molina and johnson-Jason molina [songs ohia] must be one of the most prolific songwriters around at the moment, its not long since his last album as magnolia electric co and hes back with a new collaboration with will johnson from centr o matic. This is a truly stunning collection of sombre country and folk tinged sounds, beautifully rustic and downbeat. It kind of sounds like molina and johnson simply entered a room together and just played a string of songs live, its got a lovely raw live feel about. Its an album steeped in the sounds of old country and folk but this pair totally strip it down to its bare essentials with a lot of tracks just featuring guitar and piano. The two voices work so well together, both having just the right amount of that classic nashville drawl. An album that will very gently blow you away. November 2009-Cd-Secretly canadian-€11.99

Monsters of folk-Monsters of folk-Is there such a thing as an underground folk supergroup, if so then this is probably them. Monsters of folk features conor oberst [bright eyes], mike mogis [bright eyes / producer], jim james [my morning jacket] and singer songwriter m ward. They started playing shows together as far back as 2004 and this is they long overdue debut album. The first thing i would think of pointing out with this album is that maybe they should have called themselves the monsters of rootsy country rock [you will know what i mean when you hear it]. Its an album of mainly acoustic based rootsy americana with the odd burst of old school roots rock. It will be pure heaven for fans of the sounds of the band, gram parsons, wilco, whiskeytown etc. September 2009-Cd-Rough trade-€11.99

O rourke, jim-The visitor-Jim o rourke returns with his first solo collection in eight years. The album sees o rourke in totally solo mood and features just one long instrumental track clocking in at just over 38 minutes. The album is being released pretty much as a sequel to his album bad timing from way back in 1999, particularly as it features some really beautiful lenghty passages of steel strung acoustic guitar arrangements. I have recently seen this album described a modern folk symphony and that phrase really does pin down this albums sound in two simple words. The album does have moments harking back to the work of the great john fahey but o rourke also adds in big washes of lush string sounds along with some truly awesome multitracked acoustic guitar sounds, it almost sounds like there could be ten different guitarists working at the same time. O rourke also throws in some passages of beautifully minimal piano which really adds to the overall orchestral feel to the record. I have to say this album really is best enjoyed in just one sitting and the forty or so minutes really do pass rather quickly. Its been a long wait, but in fairness albums like this dont just happen overnight. August 2009-Cd-Drag city-€11.99

Om-God is good-God is good is the fourth album from this doom rock outfit featuring the rhythm section from the legendary stoner rock outfit sleep [aka chris hakius and al cisneros]. The band have entrusted steve albini [shellac] to produce this album again. The album opens up with the truly epic thebes track, taking up all of side one with with a massive 19 minutes and possibly the closest thing they have done to the awesome sleep album dopesmoker / jerusalem. Blending dirge like doom metal sounds with bits of eastern folk mysticism, this truly is minimal stoner rock to the extreme. Features some of the most hypnotic sounds this pair have put their name to, its going to be pure heaven for lovers of early sleep, kyuss etc. November 2009-Cd-Drag city-€13.99

Reinhardt, django-The 1938 london debut and paris sessions-While 1937 came to a close on the notes of the virtuoso tea for two, 1938 began with the first appearance of the quintette du hot club de france in england, an even greater sell-out event than duke ellington. The london recording sessions for decca took place a few days after that event. Django played his own compositions, some jazz hits, and accompanied solos, the sound being now improved and more mature. The british episode was short but intense, and three more titles were recorded later, in august. In-between django also recorded three sides with benny carter, who had widely played around europe beginning in 1935. Before carter left paris for harlem at the end of 1938, a recording session was arranged with django on guitar, and not surprisingly, one of the tunes, i’m coming virginia, was a success.-Lp-Monk-€13.99

Soap and skin-Lovetune for vacuum-Soap and skin is the work of one very talented 18 year old austrian artist by the name of anja plaschg and this here is her damn fine and rather kooky debut album. At times the album is kind of like a dark goth tinged take on the dramatic sounds of antony and the johnsons with some added old time german cabaret vibes. In other places she kind of reminds me of a slightly darker kate bush blended with the haunting ethereal sounds of marissa nadler. The album is full of lots of dramtic mostly piano led ballads with plenty of subtle electronic trickery added in deep in the mix. A beautifully quirky debut. May 2009-Cd-Pias-€9.99

Sonic youth-The eternal-Having spent years on the geffen label sonic youth return to their indie roots with a new album for the matador label. Produced by john agnello and now featuring ex pavement bass player mark ibold. The album also features artwork by the late great guitarist john fahey. This is definitely an album that will bring much joy to fans of goo and dirty period sonic youth. Its very much a collection of shorter more immediate tracks featuring a host of uptempo grunge like avant rock sounds. To me sonic youth have always been a band with two very distinctive sounds with their earlier albums featuring lots of long rambling avant rock and their later material featuring a more immediate rock sound. The closing ten minute track is the only thing to evoke the sounds of evol or sister whilst the majority of the rest of the album is sonic youth at their grunge rock best. Its a sound very distinctive to sonic youth and within seconds of the opening track you know exactly who you are listening to. They may be getting on in years but when it comes to cutting edge alternative american rock there are not many people that can do it aswell as sonic youth. Its easily up there with goo or dirty as classic sonic youth. Pressed on two slabs of heavyweight 180 gram vinyl and comes in an ultra heavy card gatefold sleeve. June 2009-2lp-Matador-€21.99

Speck mountain-Some sweet relief [with bonus mp3 download]-The return of one of our favourite bands around here at the moment and their first for the carrot top label. The previous album summer above came out last year on the peace frog label. Its another delicious slice of modern folkiness with hints of the classic ethereal sounds of mazzy star and the rambling slowcore of either galaxy 500 or low. What these guys add to truly stand out from the crowd is the stunning voice of marie claire balabanian sounding like hope sandoval with a slight country twang. It really is the voice of an angel as far as we are concerned. The album features some haunting slow building electric folk sounds with lots of shimmering guitar sounds and lovely warm organ vibes. If you liked the first one then be prepared to be totally blown away by this. This vinyl pressing comes with a bonus mp3 download coupon. July 2009-Lp-Carrot top-€15.99

Tortoise-Beacons of ancestorship-Tortoise return with their sixth full length studio album and their first release of new material in five years. The album kind of fits snuggly between the early post rock sounds of the first two albums and the more electronic based funked up sounds of tnt. Its an album bristling with funky krautrock vibes and even sees tortoise dipping their toes into the wobbly bass world of dubstep on a couple of tracks. Its one of the more uptempo beat driven tortoise albums in quite a while with john mecntire providing the backbone of funky jazz like live drums. A couple of tracks even strike as some modern take on the early seventies funk sound with lots of chunky organ sounds making an appearence. Theres even a morricone like slide guitar led tune. I have to say its been well worth the wait. June 2009-Cd-Thrill jockey-€12.99

Volcano choir-Unmap [featuring bon iver]-Volcano choir is a brand new collaborative project between justin vernon [aka bon iver] and the collection of colonies of bees. This is their debut release for the jag jaguwar label. Bon iver fans should be warned this is a very different collection of sounds compared to his solo release for emma. This is a collection of almost psyche folk based sounds with heaps of added electronic tinkering, coming across like animal collective in a more folky mood. The album features some beautifully abstract almost ambient like passages reminiscent of fennesz meets a bit of four tet. September 2009-Cd-Jagjaguar-€9.99

Whipping boy-Submarine-The debut album from irelands whipping boy, finally available again on cd, this album has been out of print for far too many years, recorded way back in 1991, features 10 cuts of pure raw sounding whipping boy, features safari, beatle, sushi, favourite sister, astronaut blues, bettyclean, buffalo, snow, valentine 69 and submarine, may 2006-Cd-Whipping boy recordings-€14.99
Xx, the-Xx-The debut album from this young english based outfit on the xl offshoot label young turks. Its an album of both forward thinking and retro sounding tunes taking its lead from late eighties new wave and totally modernising the sound. Featuring lots of 4ad like shimmering reverb laden guitar sounds, almost four tet like beats, new wave synth sounds, heavily textured electronica and sultry laid back indie pop sounds. Its a fairly tricky one to pin down as its neither new wave nor indie pop, its full of chunky electronic beats which give it a totally modern and quite original twist. Kind of like a less intimate postal service but with lots of added guitars and a dark somewhat gothic like edge. Its definitely one that will appeal to lovers of the old 4ad sound and also the more modern electronic pop vibes of the morr music label. Its one of those albums that just grows on you with each listen. Comes in a lovely cutout card digipack sleeve. August 2009-Cd-Young turks-€11.99

Yo la tengo-Popular songs-The album opens up with a rather choice slice of orchestral driven psycye rock before hitting their more familiar melodic indie rock with some choice vocals from drummer georgia. For me this album really shows off this bands ability to hop between several different genres with such ease, its no surprise they have been making music since 1986. They are probaly one of the last remaining true american indie rock bands, still featuring the same three members after all these years. The album features a bit of everything from pure fuzzed up classic old style indie rock to some beautifully laid back indie pop, backed by an extended 15 minute psyche rock like jam at the end. Its an album that brings me back to an earlier classic which was and then nothing turned itself inside out from 2000 with its blend of darker late night gems and fuzzy indie rock, right down to the lengthy closing tunes. If you split the album into two distinct halves you get nine blasts of classic yo la tengo and then finishing off with 3 beautifully lengthy jam like tunes. Long time fans will definitely have this one in their list of top five yo la tengo albums and if you are new to this band you probably wont find a better way to introduce yourself to one of the very best indie rock bands on the planet at the moment.
