Road Records newsletter June 3rd 2010

Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

Another week and another which album will we pick as album of the week dilemma.
This week I have delegated the responsibily to Dylan, simply because I am useless at making decisions.
So to make a very long story short we have picked Here We Go Magic as this weeks album of the week here in the shop, Ariel Pink did come a very very close second but we have to respect the final decision made by Dylan. In fairness, both albums took me a few listens to really get into them but once they clicked with me I have to say I am truly loving both, sometimes I think the best albums don’t click the very first time you hear them. I am not even going to try and describe Here We Go Magic again, read the review and maybe have a listen for yourselves, I think you will enjoy it. The album is on special offer this week for only €12.99 so hopefully that will help with your decision to take a chance on it. We will have vinyl copies of the album in stock later today.
The Ariel Pink album is on special offer this week also, the cd is only €12.99 and the vinyl is €13.99.
The new Ash 7” is now in stock, we are up to the letter R now.
New album from Blitzen Trapper just out today on Sub Pop, its only €13.99 on cd and we should have some vinyl for you by next weekend.
A couple of early gems from avant rock noisemakers Dead C just reissued on vinyl this week and while I’m on the subject of classic vinyl reissues you should check out the first two Soft Machine albums, back in print on vinyl again at last.
Irish band Dark Room Notes have just re-released their debut full length album, the album has now been remastered and also comes on vinyl for the very first time.
Nice new Field Music 7” just in stock today featuring a cover of “Terrapin” by Syd Barrett on the flip side.
The recent Sage Francis album is now in stock on vinyl and comes with a download coupon.
The truly awesome Melvins are back with a brand new album this week, so far its on cd only, sorry folks but it looks like there is no vinyl pressing for this yet.
The rather lovely new Nina Nastasia album is on special offer this week on cd for only €12.99.
Brendan Perrry, he of Dead Can Dance fame, is back with his second solo album to date.
The Pierced Arrows album is now in stock on vinyl, if you are a Dead Moon fan then check this one out immediately.
A couple of nice new stoner rock albums out this week. First up is the new Mount Carmel album, reminding me of the Black Keys on a slightly more laid back buzz. And then there is the slightly more psyche tinged sounds of Sleepy Sun. Both come highly recommended by our stoner rock correspondent [that would be me].
Fans of classic early 70’s Afrobeat should check out the truly amazing reissue on the Soundway label by Ghanian outfit Sweet Talks.
The last in the series of five chronological collections from Hank Williams has just arrived in this week, another sweet gem on heavyweight vinyl featuring recordings made between 1950 and 1951.
I have already mentioned Soft Machine so I will also point you in the direction of the reissue of Robert Wyatt’s “His Greatest Misses” album on the Domino label. Worth it alone just for the version of Shipbuilding.

Right, thats it for another week, just want to say thanks to Dylan for picking album of the week this week and I hope you like his choice, can’t wait to see what he picks the week the Dinah Brand album comes out.

Adios

Here we go magic-Pigeons-Here we go magic are a five piece band made up of member luke temple, kristina lieberson, michael bloch, jennifer turner and peter hale. This is their second full length album to date, their first album came out in 2009 on the american indie label western vinyl, this one comes courtesy of the secretly canadian label. The first album was much more of a one man in his bedroom style affair compared to this full blown band affair. The sounds on this one are much more expansive and full but it still retains that kind of hypnotic almost krautrock pop like feel. Its an album of ever changing moods and sounds, at times sounding like some kind of krautrock / synth pop hybrid with elements of intricate post rock guitars before then heading into a beautiful lush world of almost space rock like ambience. There are also odd hints at something that would best be described as electronic punk funk, its kind of almost new wave but with a much more synth like slant to it. And then just to confuse you even more, by the time you hit the middle of this album you get a totally guitar led track that could easily be some long lost galaxie 500 outtake. I have to say i love when an album like this arrives in the shop, it genuinely refuses to be pigeonholed in any way, hence the title maybe and thats always a good thing in my opinion. Go ask your local shop if they have anything in the futuristic psyche pop no wave punk funk krautrock genre and they will finally be able to furnish you with a gem of a new album. Ariel pinks haunted graffiti-Before today-Brand new album from arial pinks haunted graffiti, his first for new label 4ad, following hot on the heels of the first single round and round. Ariel pink is based around los angeles native ariel rosenberg and backed by longtime collaborators haunted graffiti featuring kenny gilmore [keys / guitar / vocals], aaron sperske [drums / vocals] and tim koh [bass / vocals]. This sounds very much like the first fully fledged all band affair, its a much bigger and maybe more cohesive sounding affair compared to some of the earlier lo fi bedroom style recordings. This is in fact a collection of purely blissful and very lush psychedelic pop sounds, try to imagine if the beach boys were around in the mid eighties making radio friendly pop music, then add in a healthy dose of psychedelia. Its infectiously catchy stuff, full of clever samples and all manner of studio trickery to tie it all together so well. At times you kind of get the feeling you have just tuned into some retro rock radio station, the sounds do actually change that much from track to track. There are some wonderful guitar driven seventies like tunes mingling in here amongst the more eighties like sounds. I can only presume calling the album before today has something to do with the overall retro like vibe going on. June 2010-Cd-4ad-€12.99

Nastasia, nina-Outlaster-Nina nastasia returns with her first new album since the truly wonderful collaboration from 2007 with jim white from the dirty three. Recording once more with steve albini at electrical audio in chicago. Nina engaged los angeles instrumentalist and arranger paul bryan to adapt her songs into a score for a small orchestra. The album also features drummer jay bellerose [t-bone burnett / joe henry] and chicago based guitarist jeff parker [tortoise]. The album features a truly beautiful collection of sombre orchestral folk sounds, full of quirky almost psyche folk like influences. Its got a bit of the drama of early joanna newsom, the sparse folk of cat power and some of the haunting darkness of marissa nadler. This is definitely one for a quiet dark evening. June 2010-Cd-Fat cat-€12.99

Ratatat-Lp4-Rather cleverly named lp4, as its their fourth album for the xl label. Rumour has it that a lot of these tracks were first conceived around the same time as the recording of their previous album [lp3] back in 2008 and in fairness it does sound like the perfect continuation of the electronic funk sounds of their last offering. This twelve track collection of instrumentals features all manner of electronic funk sounds going right back to the early days of disco whilst also taking in a bit of electro pop and glam funk along the way. Its pure good time party music. June 2010-Cd-Xl-€13.99

Sartain, dan-Dan sartain lives-Dan sartain returns with his brand new album, recorded in the highly respected toe rag studios in london with the now legendary producer liam watson, giving everything that lovely warm authentic analog kind of vibe. Its a wondeful collection of retro like laid back rockabilly influenced sounds, featuring lots of voodoo like garage pop and link wray tinged sixties surf pop. Its wonderfully sleazy collection of laid back grooves with hints of everything from jon spencer to the dirtbombs to the oblivions. Fans of modern garage rock and surf tinged alt rock will be in heaven when they hear this, highly recommended to fans of billy childish, holly golightly, swamp rock, fifties rockabilly and sixties garage pop. Its jane weavers fifth solo album and is released on finders keepers offshoot label bird records. Its a rather beautiful and strange collection of psychedelic electronic tinged folk pop sounds. Angola prisoners blues-Various artists [180 gram vinyl]-Collection of material recorded by harry oster in the fifties at state prison in angoloa [louisiana]. These songs originally appeared on the cd only collection of the same name on the arhoolie label, but this stripped down version is the first time these tracks have been available on vinyl in many years. The original collection on arhoolie featured a total of 20 tracks recorded by oster at the prison, this vinyl release features just nine of those tracks and concentrates on the recordings of just three of those prisoners. The real gem of the pack are the four tracks from the legendary robert pete williams, after his release he went on to have a fairly successful career on the folk circuit in the 60's and 70's. The album also featues cuts from matthew maxey and robert guitar welch. The album comes pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Comes with a printed inner sleeve featuring lyrics for all the tracks and recording details. The album also features detailed liner notes by harry oster himself on the back of the sleeve. Dead c-Clyma est mort / tentative power [double vinyl with free cd]-Recorded live in their practice room in port chalmers way back in 1992. The album comes described as a live album on may blogs and websites but in truth the only other person there apart from the band was tom lax of siltbreeze, the band did record the album live but obviously without an audience. The album was originally released by the band themselves as a kind of fake bootleg. This new reissue of the album now comes with a bonus record featuring a collection of hard to find non album tracks. Its a wonderfully chaotic collection of psychedelic like avant rock jams, rumour has it these guys have never performed a song the same way twice and personally we love them. To quote the stick on the sleeve this album features two epic versions of max harris that will screw your head to the floor. These guys are probably one of new zealands finest noise rock outfits, starting out in 1987 with these recordings they wen't on to influence many bands in both the psyche rock and no wave genre. Francis, sage-Life [with download coupon]-Sage francis returns with a brand new album on the anti label. I think it would be fair to say this man has always been pushing the boundaries of what hip hop can and should sound like, he has always been one to try and work with musicians from outside to genre to try and bend / blend the divisions between rock and hip hop. On this album francis has enlisted producer brian deck to blend it all together. Guest musicians / songwriters on the album include jim becker and tim rutili from chicago outfit califone, ex grandaddy frontman jason lytle, chris walla from death cab for cutie, mark linkous of sparklehorse, joey burns and john convertino from calexico and devotchka. Goldfrapp-Head first [with free cd]-Goldfrapp returns with her fifth studio album to date on the mute label. Its another pulsating collection of electro pop tinged modern pop sounds, full of eighties synth based influences and lots of ambient pop like touches along the way. Its probably one of her catchiest albums to date too, the album is brimming with nine infectious dreamy pop songs. It kind of hints at times like the meeting of human league and st etienne, full of sultry electro pop, both retro and modern at the same time. The album comes packaged with a giant foldout poster and a full copy of the album on cd inside the sleeve. Comes in a lovely gatefold sleeve too. May 2010-Lp-Mute-€19.99

The album features born under a bad sign, crosscut saw, kansas city, oh pretty woman, down don't bother me, the hunter, funk-shun, i almost lost my mind, personal manager, laundromat blues, as they years go passing by, the very thought of you and overall junction.-Lp-Sundazed-€21.99

Its an album of smooth mellow almost seventies like soul sounds with hints at the laid back jazz rock of the likes of steely dan. At times it kind of reminds me of john martyn jamming with stevie wonder, full of soulful hammond organ and folk / jazz like sunshine rock sounds. Its beautifully laid back stuff, this could be perfect driving music in an open top car on a beautiful sunny day, so you will get to play it once a year in this country. June 2010-Cd-Tomlab-€17.99

Melvins-Bride screamed murder-As a long time fan of psychedelic sludge rock, there is no greater feeling than a brand new melvins album arriving in the shop. This is their third so far since enlisting the help of jared warren and coady willis from big business, overall they must be hitting nearly 20 albums at this stage. You will be happy to hear its pretty much business as usual at melvins central, another superbly sludge like and dirty collection of psychedelic stoner rock sounds with lots of trademark twists and turns. There is even a strange call & response style thing going on that actually sounds a bit like adam and the ants, if they had been a bunch of filthy stoner rockers though. I suppose the track everybody will go wild for is the truly awesome eight minute cover of my generation [the who], barely recognizable apart from the lyrics. If you dont already love the melvins then may i suggest you start now. June 2010-Cd-Ipecac-€17.99

Its a wonderfully enjoyable forty minutes of fuzzed up blues rock sounds, think somebetween early zeppelin, black sabbath and the black keys with just a hint of the early stoner rock sounds of kyuss thrown in for extra heaviness. Theres a lovely retro kind of vibe from the album, its full of fuzzed up heavy guitar workouts and lots of laid back hazy psyche blues vibes. June 2010-Cd-Siltbreeze-€17.99

Perry, brendan-Ark-If you are not a long time dead can dance fan you are probably thinking to yourself, brendan who. This man has been making records with lisa gerrard under the dead can dance name for nearly three decades now, in fact they are probably one of the biggest selling acts of all time on the legendary 4ad label. Thats the end of the history lesson about brendan perry, apart from the fact that this is only his second solo album to date and it was all recorded here in ireland [we think he still lives here, so we like to think of him as our own at this stage]. Perry does pretty much everything on the album, right down to recording and production. Its a wonderfully expansive collection of sounds, mostly synth and keyboard driven with a lovely kind of space like ambience about it at times. Some of the tracks are mildly reminscent of his work with dead can dance but this one has a somewhat dubby like overall feel about it. Its introspective and dark at times, in fairness what else did you expect. June 2010-Cd-Cooking vinyl-€16.99

Sleepy sun-Fever-The follow up to their album embrace, also released on the atp label. Sleepy sun are a san franciscan based psyche rock outfit. These guys deal in the more laid back side of psyche rock calling to mind the sounds of black mountain or brightblack morning light. Its very much an album owing a lot to the hazy summer sounds of seventies psyche rock with sleepy sun adding just the odd hint of avant rock and wigged out blues. At times sounding like a slighly more avant rock led zeppelin meets the kind of sleepy desert rock of kyuss. With a name like sleepy sun they are probably one of the most aptly named bands, i can imagine listening to this on a hazy summers evening. June 2010-Cd-Atp recordings-€17.99

Here we go magic-Pigeons [this album will be released on the 11th of june]-Here we go magic are a five piece band made up of member luke temple, kristina lieberson, michael bloch, jennifer turner and peter hale. June 2010-Lp-Secretly canadian-€13.99

Its full of swirling synth drone effects and shimmering guitar sounds with tons of lush strings courtesy of sigur ros collaborators amiina. It really is a rather beautiful collection of calming sounds with the kind of minimal ambience that sigur ros fans will adore from the first note. Its also an album that will definitely appeal to fans of the ambient sounds of the likes of brian eno and even to lovers of the touch label. Comes in a lovely card gatefold sleeve which of course was designed by alex somers. July 2009-Cd-Emi-€12.99

Kreidler-Mosaik 2014 [with free cd]-Brand new collection from this german electronic synth pop / post rock outfit now signed to the italic label. The band previously featured stefan schneider from to rococo rot but are now pared down to a three piece of thomas klein, andreas reihse and detlef weinrich. The album features some beautifully dubby synth based sounds falling somewhere between a more bass heavy kraftwerk and the kind of space age sounds of seventies space rock. There are also hints of late eighties synth pop in here but it falls much more on the dubby side of synth music. There are obvious references to some early krautrock, its very much an album that falls into the dubby ambient genre overall though. Limited edition vinyl pressing which comes with a full copy of the album on cd inside the sleeve. March 2010-Lp-Italic-€19.99

Sleep whale-Little brite-Sleep whale are based around joel north on guitar and cello along with bruce blay on violin and programming. This is a really beautifully collection of sounds incorprating sparse psyche folk, post rock and gentle electronica. Its sees the meeting of gently plucked acoustic guitars, looped found sounds and laptop electronica. At times it kind of reminds me of what john fahey would sound like jamming with four tet. There is also lots of lovely gentle post rock kind of vibes going on here too, at times reminscent of the likes of the dirty 3 or even the rachels on a slightly more avant folk like buzz. Limited edition green vinyl pressing. 2009-Lp-Western vinyl-€12.99

Voice of the seven thunders-Voice of the seven thunders [limited to only 1000 numbered copies]-Brand new project from rick tomlinson, formerly known as voice of the seven woods [twisted nerve]. The band features long time collaborator chris walmsley on drums and rory gibson on bass, so its pretty much voice of the seven woods with a new name and it must also be added, a totally brand new sound. Whilst his previous collections have been on the hypnotic psyche folk side of things this new album is pure electric psychedelic rock, full of wailing guitar solo action. It seems the band just plugged in all their electric guitars and let loose in the studios without any prior rehearsal of the tracks. What came out is some truly hypnotic psyche rock with hints of middle eastern folk, hendrix like guitar solo action. Try to imagine if hendrix and john fahey were one person, then this is what he would have come out with. Its truly blistering stuff with just the odd break for a moment of acoustic trance like folk picking. This limited edition vinyl pressing is limited to only 1000 numbered copies and comes with a bonus mp3 download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. April 2010-Lp-Tchantinler recordings-€23.99

The album is centred around a brand new fusion of sounds from the congo in the mid fifties as ex pats started to return with all these latin american imported 78s. As local bands began to incorporate these latin rhythms into their own sound this whole new sound was born. Its kind of a similar story to the days in jamaica when soul music was first introduced to early reggae recording artists. As ever with honest jons the album comes with a detailed booklet packed with information on the artists and this ever evolving sound. The album artwork also features some stunning old black and white photos from dancehalls back in the day. July 2009-2lp-Honest jons-€19.99
