Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.
Its one of those rare heavenly type of weeks here in the shop this week, its not often we get two of our favourite bands releasing albums in the same week, but you have probably guessed already that its happened this week. Not only do we have a brand new Teenage Fanclub album for you but we also have a new Divine Comedy too. The poor record player in the shop is so confused at this stage with the amount of swapping around we are doing.
After much debating we have decided to give our album of the week to Teenage Fanclub, by much debating I mean that Dylan and myself just bullied everybody else and made the decision for them. The new album is called “Shadows” and comes out again on their own Pema label, the cd and vinyl are both €13.99 each for this week.
So our album of the week runner up spot goes to the Divine Comedy album “Band Goes The Knighthood” or should that have been “Bang Goes The Road Records Album Of The Week Spot, Thanks To Teenage Fanclub”. We have a limited amount of the double cd version in stock now and its only €13.99, the rather lovely vinyl in gatefold sleeve is also on special offer for only €16.99. We are also very excited to announce the Mr Divine Comedy himself, Neil Hannon, will be playing live in our little store this Saturday at 1pm. You are all very welcome to come and we will try and squeeze everybody in.

Well lets see where to begin.
Lets start with some new Irish music, Boa Morte are back after a long long break with a brand new album this week. God Is An Astronaut return with another slice of lush post rock. The Rags have just released their debut album. Gavin Glass is a multi-instrumentalist you may have seen perform with Lisa Hannigan recently and he has just released a brand solo album. The rather lovely Walpurgis Family have a new album out this week on the Popical Island label. Band On An Island have just released a limited edition hand numbered 7” this week on First Born Is Dead records, only 100 copies in total available.
Fans of avant garde noise rock will simply adore this new Rangda album out this week on Drag City. The band features Ben Chasny, Chris Corsano and Richard Bishop. For wall to wall noise, it just doesn’t get any better than this one.
Oneida fans should check out this new band People Of The North, why ? I hear you ask, well its basically the same band with a different name.
The new Micah P Hinson album is now in stock on vinyl, its only €18.99 for a limited time.
I must say I am slowly getting a bit addicted to the new John & Jehn album at this stage, its definitely worth checking out if you get a chance.

The facts are it contains twelve classic slices of pure sunshine pop sounds, really is there anybody else better at this kind of jangly guitar music out there. Some of the tracks feature brass and strings, some of them dont. These guys are blessed with three of the finest songwriters around at the moment, not to mention three of the finest singers too. The album kind of sounds a bit like teenage fanclub, probably falling somewhere between grand prix and songs from northern britain. Basically its yet another superb collection, buy it and try not to smile from start to finish. May 2010-Cd-Pema-€13.99

The album features nine brand new tracks plus brand new recordings of the meaning of the ritual and pieces which both appeared on the hollow kind ep, released on irish indie label any other city last year. Quite simply this is one of the most accomplished debut albums we have heard from a local musician in quite some time, this young man is going to be around for some considerable time if this is anything to go by. The album features a superbly lush collection of heartfelt and emotionally charged almost folk like songs, both dark and totally uplifting at the same time. Its an album of almost orchestral like pop sounds at times with tons of beautiful string and brass elements included along the way. There are moments that kind of remind me of pure intimacy of early elliott smith with elements also of the classic songwriting sounds of labelmate cass mccombs. Its must be mentioned that this man possesses one of the finest voices i have heard in ages, equally happy with a low gentle whisper before hitting some soulful higher tones. From gentle folk to euphoric orchestral pop, this is an album that i can already see ending up in plenty of end of year polls. The album features a rather quirky and off kilter take on the classic sounds of post punk and indie rock. There are hints of the pixies disjointed guitar driven off kilter rhythms along with a voice reminscent of the violent femmes and bass heavy punk funk influences. Fans of the likes of arcade fire, tapes n tapes etc will love this for its raw and highly inventive take on underground rock. Its is amazingly enough also his first album as the divine comedy since victory for the comic muse back in 2006. Its been a long four year wait for long time fans of mr hannon but we will have to let him away with it, in fairness to him he has been busy with the duckworth lewis method. This is definitely an album that will tick all the right boxes for you divine comedy fans, its very much an album that sounds like it was written on piano this time, pretty much every track features piano as the lead instrument with plenty of lush orchestration then added in for extra drama and authenticity. Its another wonderful collection of distinctly divine comedy like chamber pop sounds with plenty of hannons almost vaudeville like twists and turns, not to mention the odd bit of sixties tinged scott walker like orchestral pop. Future islands-In evening air [with download coupon]-The debut full length album from future islands on the thrill jockey label. This album follows up their very limited in the fall mini album from earlier this year and and their previous full length wave like home from back in 2008. This is very much an album of hard to define sounds, at times fuzzed up electro pop and other times bass heavy new wave. Its full of throbbing electro like beats, scuzzy snyth action, heavily distorted guitar / bass and a vocalist that sounds like tom waits meets ian curtis. The album is pressed on very limited translucent orange vinyl and is limited to 1000 copies in total. Also comes with a bonus mp3 download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. Hinson, micah p-And the pioneer saboteurs [double vinyl]-The fourth full length solo album from texas based singer songwriter micah p hinson. The album features string arrangements by eric bachmann and members of techanko, devotcha and crooked fingers. This is his first collection of new material since the red empire orchestra album back in 2008. The first thing you will notice about this collection is the truly lush orchestration involved, its quite a different beast to the totally stripped down sounds of the previous outing. The album kind of hints at times of a folk singer playing the spaghetti western soundtracks of ennio morricone with richard hawley and calexico hovering around in the background. Its a really beautiful meeting of rough rustic folk sounds and big blasts of strings and brass. There are also a couple longer tracks that go into some kind of weird almost psyche folk like noisy jams, almost sounding like bonnie prince billy jamming with godspeed you black emperor. Never one to rest on his laurels micah p has come up trumps yet again. Pressed on two beautiful slabs of heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Also comes in a gatefold sleeve. Howard, rowland s-Pop crimes-Ex nick cave and lydia lunch collaborator and seminal guitar rowland s howards second solo album, recorded only months before his untimely death from liver cancer. I suppose he is probably best remembered as the guitarist with legendary australian outfit the birthday party. A perfectly formed collection of eight tracks, clocking in at just under forty minutes, the perfect length for any album in my opinion. The album features six original howard tracks along with covers of lifes what you make it [talk talk] and nothin [townes van zandt]. Howard is joined by mick harvey [bad seeds], jp shilo adn jonnine standish [ex hate rock trio]. Features some lovely dark hearted swamp blues like rootsy sounds, coming across like later nick cave with lots of added hammond organ. May 2010-Cd-Infectious-€12.99
Randazzo, elisa-Bruises and butterflies-Songwriter and clothing designer who has previously worked with the red krayola releases her debut solo album for the drag city label. Randazzo played violin and sang with the red krayola on several tours and has appeared on four of their albums to date. The album features a lovely collection of downbeat and somewhat haunting folk based sounds. Its an album that harks back a wee bit to the classic early seventies folk sound, its even got hints of the likes of judee sill or linda perhacs whilst also reminding me of the more modern ethereal folk sounds of the likes of espers or marissa nadler. Band on an island-Back disco-Limited edition 7 inch release from band on an island on the firstborn is dead label [home to the mighty stef]. Features back disco featuring claire prendergast and chelsea bards on the flip side. The single is limited to a measly 100 individually hand numbered copies, never to be repressed so get em while you still can. On the a side there is a special hand sprayed stenciled band on an island logo and the flip side features a hand drawn picture of the chelsea hotel sign, no two copies will ever be the same. The b-side of the single was recorded by the mighty stef himself in room 325 of the famous hotel chelsea and is dedicated to its great manager stanley bard. Boa morte-The dial waltz-Hard to believe its been almost eight years since we last heard from this cork based outfit, we all thought they had broken up at this stage but thankfully i can report they are all alive and kicking. Their last album left us all here wanting more and its been a long long wait. Fronted again by the deep vocal tones of corma gahan the band also feaures paul ruxton [guitars / bass], bill twomey [guitars] and maurice hallissey [drums]. The album features a rather beautiful collection of downbeat slow core meets post rock sounds, think red house painters meets low and smog. Its a lovely sombre and intimate affair full of gently brushed drum sounds, strings and minimal post rock like guitar picking. Fans of fellow irishman adrian crowley will fall in love with this one instantly. Its one of those perfect late night bedtime albums, beautifully soothing stuff. Bobby and blumm-A little big-Singer / guitarist fs blumm teams up with swedish singer ellinor blixt for their second album under the bobby and blumm moniker. Their previous album everybody loves came out on the highly respected morr music label back in 2008. The album features eleven perfectly formed electronic pop gems. Its a beautiful blend of dual vocals, subtle guitar picking and the gentlest of beats. Its almost like some mellow late night electronic folk album, full of sounds that will excite all fans of the morr music label, lali puna etc. Its wonderfully intimate stuff, almost sounding like a totally stripped down stereolab in a slighly more sombre mood. Davis, miles-Miles davis quartet [1953 and 1954]-Composed of two different sessions on 180 gram vinyl by the doxy label. The first four tracks were recorded on 19th of may 1963 with the remaining four coming from a session on march 10th 1954. Features when the lights are low, tune-up, miles ahead, smooch, four, old devil moon, blue haze and ill remember april. Joining davis on the first session are john lewis [piano], charlie mingus [piano], percy heath [bass] adn max roach [drums]. Doyle, matthew-A most unholy reminder-Limited edition five track ep featuring haunt you, youll never make it out of here alive, oh no the wolves are coming, o lord why are you running and folk on the road. Its very much an all solo affair from this dublin based singer songwriter, he writes, plays and records everything on here. The ep features a lovely rustic collection of old time acoustic folk sounds with hints of early dylan, townes van zandt and bonnie prince billys outings as palace brothers. The album features a lush collection of mostly folk based sounds, taking in a bit of everything from funky rock to jazz tinged folk rock along the way. Fred and bob-On a good day-The debut ep from this dublin based four piece new wave / indie rock outfit. Limited edition four track ep featuring gluey fingers, taken, blue and are you. The band features emma greenhalgh [vocals], sophia kansanniva [guitars], gil connor [bass] and neil farren [drums]. Features lots of fuzzed up indie rock guitar sounds and a vocalist that sounds like blondie in a particularly bad mood. May 2010-Cd-Own label-€4.99
Fujita, masayoshi and jan jelinek-Birds lake objects-Brand new collaboration between highly respected electronic producer jan jelinek and japanese percussionist / vibraphonist masayoshi fujita. The album features six lengthy and slow building pieces of music incorporating fujitas vibraphone, jelineks laptop wizardry and selected ambient location recordings. The end result is something strange but very very beautiful too. Sounding almost like some laid back avant garde electronic jazz at times, the album features lots of looping sound effects, hazy drone likes sounds and the truly hypnotic tones of fujitas vibraphone. Its beautifully psychedelic at times featuring lots of swirling reverb laden sound effects. Its almost ambient like at times but with so much going on deep in the mix you will find yourself getting slowly sucked in for 40 truly beautiful minutes. The album features six lengthy and slow building pieces of music incorporating fujitas vibraphone, jelineks laptop wizardry and selected ambient location recordings. The end result is something strange but very very beautiful too. Sounding almost like some laid back avant garde electronic jazz at times, the album features lots of looping sound effects, hazy drone likes sounds and the truly hypnotic tones of fujitas vibraphone. Hinson, micah p-And the pioneer saboteurs [double vinyl]-The fourth full length solo album from texas based singer songwriter micah p hinson. The album features string arrangements by eric bachmann and members of techanko, devotcha and crooked fingers. This is his first collection of new material since the red empire orchestra album back in 2008. The first thing you will notice about this collection is the truly lush orchestration involved, its quite a different beast to the totally stripped down sounds of the previous outing. The album kind of hints at times of a folk singer playing the spaghetti western soundtracks of ennio morricone with richard hawley and calexico hovering around in the background. Its a really beautiful meeting of rough rustic folk sounds and big blasts of strings and brass. There are also a couple longer tracks that go into some kind of weird almost psyche folk like noisy jams, almost sounding like bonnie prince billy jamming with godspeed you black emperor. Never one to rest on his laurels micah p has come up trumps yet again. Pressed on two beautiful slabs of heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Also comes in a gatefold sleeve. Howard, rowland s-Pop crimes-Ex nick cave and lydia lunch collaborator and seminal guitar rowland s howards second solo album, recorded only months before his untimely death from liver cancer. I suppose he is probably best remembered as the guitarist with legendary australian outfit the birthday party. A perfectly formed collection of eight tracks, clocking in at just under forty minutes, the perfect length for any album in my opinion. The album features six original howard tracks along with covers of lifes what you make it [talk talk] and nothin [townes van zandt]. Howard is joined by mick harvey [bad seeds], jp shilo adn jonnine standish [ex hate rock trio]. Features some lovely dark hearted swamp blues like rootsy sounds, coming across like later nick cave with lots of added hammond organ. May 2010-Cd-Infectious-€12.99
Indignant senility-Plays wagner part two-The second in a series of two limited edition vinyl releases on the type label from electronic producer pat maherr. Using a handful of dusty old wagner recordings he has stretched and distorted the hallowed tones of the original material into something indescribably dark and beautiful. It would be fair to say you will be struggling to find anything of the original recordings in here, most of it has been slowed down or reversed so much that its best approached as a totally unique piece of music. There are just odd hints of some kind of drone like string effects but most of the album features lots of biosphere like glitchy atmospherics. Its a classic piece of ambient music that the type label seem to be so good at sourcing for us. Its beautifully scratchy sounding stuff, almost like a score to some sci-fi horror movie from the past. This is an album of much more wide ranging sounds, almost cinematic at times, compared to their self titled debut from 2008. Features a collection of sounds that delve into both dark electro pop and early new wave. Its an album of almost sultry like dark hearted alt pop sounds, at times calling to mind some of the early sounds of the 4ad label. Its beautifully strange at times too, with gentle electro pop like beats meeting big chunky bass riffs and jehns operatic like vocal delivery. New york thrash-Various artists-A truly classic compilation of new york hardcore punk bands, originally released way back in 1982 and now reissued on roir label. Features 24 absolutely classic examples of the legendary new york hardcore sound from way back in its heyday. The original album only featured 22 tracks, this new reissue now features two extra bonus tracks by the stimulators. The album features tracks from the mad, kraut, heart attack, adrenalin od, fiends, nihilistics, undead, false prophets, bad brains, the beastie boys, stimulators and even worse. People of the north-Deep tissue [with download coupon]-A band formed by kid millions and bobby matador of oneida back in 2003, the band can at times feature all members of oneida and at other times not. Such is the mystery that surrounds this album, there are no credits on the record anywhere so i am trusting the labels website for all my information. The album was recorded at the ocropolis in 2009 and features pretty much all members of oneida at some point or other, and believe me it sounds like it too. The album is probably more of a space / prog rock like affair compared to the more scuzzed up sounds of oneida, its very much an album deeply rooted in early krautrock and synth based space rock sounds. The album features just four rather lenghty and mind melting excurisions into the world of motorik hypnotic krautrock full of space age like minimalism and plenty of ear shredding noise. Pocahaunted-Make it real-Brand new album from the new look pocahaunted on the not not fun label. Apparently recorded barefoot, shirtless and direct to tape at green machine studios during the summer of 2009 by m geddes gengras, and featuring guest bamboo sax by jazzmaster alex gray [dreamcolour / deep magic]. Limited to only 500 copies on vinyl. This is very much a different beast to their earlier all out psychedelic shamanic like psyche folk rumblings. This one is a superb collection of totally dubbed up psychedelic almost pop like sounds full of tribal like beats, african tinged guitar picking and native american like chanting. Its kind of reminds me a little bit of what the slits would have sounded like with lee scratch perry at the controls. Its an album that harks back a wee bit to the classic early seventies folk sound, its even got hints of the likes of judee sill or linda perhacs whilst also reminding me of the more modern ethereal folk sounds of the likes of espers or marissa nadler. Thomas, andrew-Between buildings and trees-The fourth solo album from new zealander andrew thomas, now on the kompakt label. Along with releasing his own solo albums thomas has also worked with signer and played on the skallander debut album released on the type label. This is an album of truly beautiful laid back ambient sounds, gently delving into the world of ambient pop from time to time. A collection of swirling, scratchy sound effects layered behind some rather gentle almost dubby like beats. Using a selection of source material taken from old cassettes the album has a lovely warm kind of tape hiss about it creating lovely looping drone effects. Its an album that definitely falls more into the ambient or ambient pop category. May 2010-Cd-Kompakt-€21.99

The album features a selection of beautifully intimate home recordings, just like all classic mellow indie pop should be made. It kind of reminds me a little bit of yo la tengo going all indie folk, maybe in a slightly more sombre mood with just a hint of belle and sebastian. Comes in a lovely big foldout card sleeve too. Wintersleep-New inheritors-The return of this canadian based outfit with their first new full length album in nearly three years now. Its another uplifting collection of post rock tinged tinged indie rock anthems with a little bit of dark hearted new wave thrown in just to give things a little bit of edge. Features lots of intricate post rock like guitar action and gently rumbling new wave like indie rock. Its an album of almost psychedelic like sunshine indie pop sounds featuring all manner of live instruments. Its a very different sounding record compared to the slightly more hip hop tinged sounds of his band why. This one sounds at times like the flaming lips on a slightly smaller almost bedroom indie pop vibe. Its ever so slightly folk pop with lots of catchy psyche pop like influences too. On the a side there is a special hand sprayed stenciled band on an island logo and the flip side features a hand drawn picture of the chelsea hotel sign, no two copies will ever be the same. The b-side of the single was recorded by the mighty stef himself in room 325 of the famous hotel chelsea and is dedicated to its great manager stanley bard. Boa morte-The dial waltz-Hard to believe its been almost eight years since we last heard from this cork based outfit, we all thought they had broken up at this stage but thankfully i can report they are all alive and kicking. Their last album left us all here wanting more and its been a long long wait. Fronted again by the deep vocal tones of corma gahan the band also feaures paul ruxton [guitars / bass], bill twomey [guitars] and maurice hallissey [drums]. The album features a rather beautiful collection of downbeat slow core meets post rock sounds, think red house painters meets low and smog. Its a lovely sombre and intimate affair full of gently brushed drum sounds, strings and minimal post rock like guitar picking. Fans of fellow irishman adrian crowley will fall in love with this one instantly. Its one of those perfect late night bedtime albums, beautifully soothing stuff. Ashby, dorothy-The rubaiyat of dorothy ashby-This album was originally released by the cadet label way back in 1970 and is still regarded as one of ashbys finest recordings, the album features ashby on both harp and koto along with lenny druss on flute and oboe, stu katz on vibes, fred katz on kalimba, cliff davis on sax and cash mccall on guitar, the album was recorded by richard evans in chicago in late 1969, ashby has a very distinctive sound due to her being one of very few harpists working in the jazz scene of the late sixties, this album also sees ashby provide vocals on a couple of tracks giving the album a somewhat soulful feel, the jazzy instrumentals have a real hypnotic feel to them particularly on tracks like for some we loved when ashby moves over to the koto instrument, she also moves into some really lush lounge sounds on tracks likes dust when her beautiful voices comes to the fore again, this reissue comes in the original sleeve and features the original liner notes from yvonne daniels, 2007-Lp-Cadet records-€13.99

The majority of the band were tragically killed later that year in a plane crash, the same one that accounted for otis redding too. These guys were originally the house band for memphis based labels stax and volt, backing a host of top vocalists recording in both studios. In 1955 he was commissioned to write the music for the new ealing movie the ladykillers and probably most famously was the man who provided the sound effects for the daleks when they first appeared in dr who in 1963. The dual vocal sounds on the album are really what set these girls apart from other kooky psyche pop outfit out there. On one hand you have the classically trained voice of sierra sounding like an operatic version of liz fraser [cocteau twins] and then theres the much more rustic almost vaudeville souding voice of bianca, the diversity of the two sounds just works so so well together. These girls have the ability to work hip hop beats into old time piano ballads, haunting fairytale like folk into throbbing electronic pop and so much more. It really is like the meeting of two very different styles and its genuinely works so well. I think out of all four albums this is my favourite one so far. Guthrie, woody-Dust bowl ballads-This is actually the very first record cut by guthrie after moving to new york in the early fourties. Cut for alan lomax as part of his work with the library of congress. The album was originally released as three separate 78prm records and was then compiled by the smithsonian label in 1964. Now reissued by the doxy label on 180 gram vinyl. The majority of tracks were recorded in april 1940 with just the last two coming from a session in may of the same year. Ma rainey-Those dogs of mine-Ma rainey began recording for the paramount label in 1923, she was to become known as the mother of the blues, she was also one of the very first blues artists to record for the label. She began her singing career around 1896 in vaudeville and minstrel show, she was a fairly colourful character, shocking audiences with her odd lyrics and performances which at the time were deemed to be beyond the limits of decency for some. This album on the superb monk label compiles 19 of her classic recordings, made between december 1923 and august 1924. Male bonding-Nothing hurts-Nothing hurts is the sub pop debut and the first full length from dalston based trio male bonding. The band features robin silas christian [drums], john arthur webb [guitar / vocals] and kevin hendrick [bass / vocals]. The album features a fairly blistering collection of old school jangly indie rock, grunge pop and fuzzed up post punk. At times it kind of reminds me a bit of early nirvana [bleach] with a slightly more avant punk twist to it. The album also has lots of nods back towards the heavier side of jangly indie rock with plenty of choppy new wave tendencies. Its almost like a slightly more grunged up punky wedding present with bits of sixties garage surf thrown in, imagine dick dale fronting some fuzzed up indie rock band. With 13 tracks clocking in at just under thirty minutes this is pure bliss for guitar heavy indie rock fans, its the perfect length for this kind of album too, as soon as its finished you just want to hit the start button again. National, the-High violet-The national finally return with their long awaited follow up to the boxer from 2007. The eleven new tracks were recorded at the bands own studios in brooklyn with some extra recording and mixing at tarquin studios in connecticut with peter katis. The album features another superb collection of dark hearted and sombre indie rock / new wave sounds full of brooding atmospherics and shimmering reverb laden guitar effects. For me their sound is still heavily rooted in the darker side of post punk ./ indie rock ala the cure, joy division or echo and the bunnymen which is then layered with tons of anthemic american rock influences. This album is awash with lush string sounds, it almost sounds like they are backed by a full orchestra at times. This new one is a triple album, one for each year since ys [apparently]. The band features ys street band members ryan francesconi and neal morgan again. It would be fair to say after the lush orchestral washes of the van dyke parks scored last album this album has much more in common with her debut album [the mild eyed mender]. Its very much a stripped down sound again with newsom playing both piano and harp throughout. Its nice to see her going back to the sounds of the debut album, this one is all about her truly stunning voice again with just the barest of musical accompaniment. Its an album deeply rooted in traditional folk sounds, both english and american with plenty of nods back towards an old english victorian kind of vibe. If you are a novice to this womans overall sound then try to imagine a slightly more rustic sounding kate bush playing a harp, if anything newsom is even more kooky than that. This woman possesses one of the most distinctive voices around at the moment, there is no mistaking who you are listening to right from the first note. As ever its full of dramatic bursts of strings and piano, there is little else going on musically which really allows you to enjoy the truly wonderful lyrics this woman writes. Her songs are more like miniature short stories, there is nothing simple about the kind of songs this woman writes and that has always been something that makes you come back to her albums all the time. This is nothing short of beautiful, and believe me its not short but for such a long album its does seem to pass rather quickly. Its not often you can say this about a triple album but this is nothing short of perfect, just over two hours of pure bliss. The album comes packaged in a rather lavish heavy card box, each cd is individually packaged in a miniature card sleeve inside. There is also an extensive booklet with lyrics for all the tracks. Its an album deeply rooted in traditional folk sounds, both english and american with plenty of nods back towards an old english victorian kind of vibe. If you are a novice to this womans overall sound then try to imagine a slightly more rustic sounding kate bush playing a harp, if anything newsom is even more kooky than that. This woman possesses one of the most distinctive voices around at the moment, there is no mistaking who you are listening to right from the first note. As ever its full of dramatic bursts of strings and piano, there is little else going on musically which really allows you to enjoy the truly wonderful lyrics this woman writes. Her songs are more like miniature short stories, there is nothing simple about the kind of songs this woman writes and that has always been something that makes you come back to her albums all the time. This is nothing short of beautiful, and believe me its not short but for such a long album its does seem to pass rather quickly. Its not often you can say this about a triple album but this is nothing short of perfect, just over two hours of pure bliss. The album comes packaged in a rather lavish heavy card box, each vinyl comes in its own individual sleeve inside too. There is also a 12 inch sized booklet with lyrics for all the tracks. Oren ambarchi with jim o rourke and keiji haino-Tima formosa-Live recording of the debut performance of these three leading lights on the avant garde scene. Recorded at the playhouse in japan in january 2009. The album is broken down into three separate segments, spread out over a total of sixty minutes. The album feaures ambarchi on guitars, jim o rourke on piano and keiji haino on vocals / flute / drum machine. Features a selection of avant garde drone based ambience, jazz like piano tinkling and some truly haunting vocal effects from haino. April 2010-Cd-Black truffle-€21.99
Patton, charley-Electrically recorded [prayer of death]-A wonderful collection of rare recordings on the monk label from the legendary grandaddy of the delta blues. This selection was recorded on the 14th of june 1929. The album features some rare tracks patton recorded under two separate aliases. Features two tracks as the masked marvel and two as elder ja hadley. Pressed on heavy vinyl courtesy of the get back records offshoot label monk. The tracks have all been rather beautifully cleaned up and really have never sounded better. This music was always made to be listened to on vinyl so its very pleasurable to see it back on it original format again. May 2009-Lp-Monk-€13.99
Rag and stomp-A retrospective on 1930s western swing [various artists]-Another wonderful collection of rare long lost gems from the past, unearthed by the high quality reissue label monk records. The album comes in a lovely retro brown card sleeve with printed inner sleeve featuring liner notes on the tracks. These tracks, recorded in the thirties and fourties, defined a sound we now call western swing. Its like a great big jazz swing party all wrapped up one on record. Features tracks from salty holmes, sweet violet boys, bob wills and his texas playboys, jimmie revard and his oklahoma playboys, cody fox and his yellow jackets, bob skyles and his skyrockets, the hi fliers, light crust doughboys, boy newman and his boys, rice brothers gang, adolph hofner and his san antonians and finally ted daffans texans. 2009-Lp-Monk-€13.99
Redneck manifesto-Friendship-Brand new album from one of irelands very finest instrumental post rock outfits. Its hard to believe this is their first album in nearly six years now, the last album i am brazil was released way back in 2004, for some reason it just doesnt seem that long. The album was recorded in blackbox studios in france and is probably their first to really incorporate the keyboard sounds of fifth member neil o connor [aka somadrone]. Its definitely an album much more based on krautrock like rhythms, its still jam packed with intricate post rock guitar interplay but this one has a real motorik like groove provided by some sublime drum and bass action. If anything this album sounds more like the redneck manifesto jamming with can or neu, the lush analog synth sounds really do add a whole new dimension to their already rather complex sound. This truly is pure heaven for lovers of either intricate post rock or trance like krautrock from one of the finest in ireland [if not worldwide]. It may not have the same raw edge of their first album but i think you will find this is up there as one of their finest, if not their best so far. Reed, lou-Berlin [remastered edition]-Lou reeds third album which originally came out in 1973 tends to divide a lot of fans. Fans either love or hate this album. Its often described as either one of the most depressing or one of the most moving albums of all time but theres no denying its truly dark beauty. The all star lineup included the likes of jack bruce, steve winwood, ansley dunbar and tony levin along with producer and collaborator bob ezrin. The album is now reissued in its original sleeve complete with printed inner. The album has now been fully remastered for this new version on the music on vinyl reissue label. Ritter, josh-So runs the world away-So runs the world away is the brand new album from josh ritter on the irish label independent records. This is the fifth full length studio album from the idaho native. The album was recorded over a 15 month period at the great north sound society in maine, with extra additional recording at saltlands studios in brooklyn. So runs the world away continues ritter’s longtime collaboration with producer and keyboard player sam kassirer. Additionally the album sees the return of ritters core touring lineup of zack hickman, austin nevins and liam hurley. The album features another superb collection of somewhat upbeat rootsy americana, folk and country tinged sounds. It’s a beautifully melodic collection of sounds, infused with plenty of catchy rootsy pop like vibes, if anything its probably one of his most summery sounding collections in his five album career so far. Scott-heron, gil-From south africa to south carolina-This was the second album that gil scott-heron made with procuder / composer brian jackson, first minute of a new day preceded this in 1975. This album was originally released back in 1976 on the tvt label and is now reissued featuring all the original artwork. Along with jackson the band also features bob adams [drums], danny bowens [bass], victor brown [vocals / bells / tambourine], adenola [congas], charlie saunders [conga], bilal sunni ali [harmonica] and barnett williams [percussion]. The album features johannesburg, a toast to the people, the summer of 42, beginnings [first minute of a new day], south carolina [barnwell], essex, fell together and lovely day.-Lp-Rumal gia records-€13.99
Shepp, archie-Yasmina a black woman [180 gram vinyl]-Recorded in august of 1969 in paris by tenor saxophonist archie shepp. The album features collaborations with art ensemble of chicago members lester bowie, roscoe mitchell and malachi favors on the twenty minute opener, yasmina. The album also features philly joe jones, art taylor, hank mobley and sunny murray. The album features just three tracks which are yasmina, sonnys back and body & soul. Comes in the original gatefold sleeve with notes by philippe carles.-Lp-Byg-€13.99
Sparklehorse and fennesz-In the fishtank-Recorded over the space of just two days back in december 2007. The album is released as part of the ongoing in the fishtank collaboration series by the konkurrent label. Its hard to believe its been three years since we have had a new addition to this truly wonderful series [last one was isis and aereogramme in 2006]. The idea behind the series is to lock two very different bands in a room together for a few days and let them come up with some original music together. The album features seven pieces which very much sound more like fennesz backed up by sparklehorse than anything else. Its full of his classic trademark scratchy sound effects as linkous and co add in some beautifully sparse instrumentation. Linkous also adds some delicate vocal sounds on a couple of tracks with the almost folk like vibes of if my heart really standing out for me. The album comes in the original silver sleeve and is pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Features lanquidity, where pathways meet, thats how i feel, twin stars of thence and there are other worlds [they have not told you off]. The album was recorded at blank tapes in new york on the 17th of july 1978.-Lp-Philly jazz-€13.99
Surfer blood-Astro coast [red vinyl with mp3 download]-The debut album from this florida based indie rock outfit on the kanine label. Its a collection of somewhat blissful indie rock meets sixties surf pop. Try to imagine the likes of pavement or weezer jamming with the beach boys. Its full of clever indie rock sounds, complete with both jangly guitars and hints of shoegazing, then throw some of the vocal harmonies of the beach boys over the top of all that. Its a really happy feelgood kind of sound, drenched in reverb, at times kind of reminding me of some early pixies sounds for some reason. This could well become the soundtrack to the summer months.
