Road Records: October 2009

Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

I do hope you are in good form this week, I missed another week last week but lets not even begin to try and explain whats happening. Suffice to say I am back to full health and I promise all is back to normal now.

Its been a busy few weeks and there are just tons of new titles to report.
Our album of the week this week just has to go to the magnificent new Flaming Lips album. The Atlas Sound album [aka Bradford Cox from Deerhunter] is on special offer this week and its only €13.99 on cd and €15.99 on vinyl. Fans of modern classical sounds should check out the new Olafur Arnalds album “Found Songs” on Erased Tapes. The brand new Devendra Banhart album is on special offer this week for only €15.99. A couple of nice new reissues of early Bauhaus albums just in this week, both come lavishly packaged in lovely boxes. Irish band Bats have just released their debut album “Red In Tooth And Claw”. I have to say I am really loving the new Blk Jks album “After Robots”. We have a very limited double 12” just in from Japanese experimental rock legends The Boredoms. Speaking of Japanese experimental rock bands, Boris have just reissued their noise rock opus At Last Feedbacker on vinyl again. Battles member Tyondai Braxton has a new solo album out now. One of our personal favs Built To Spill are back with a brand new album. The first two Cocteau Twins albums have just been remastered and reissued on lovely 180 gram vinyl. The Cribs album is now in stock on both cd and limited vinyl. The new Early Day Miners album is on special offer for only €12.99 on cd and €13.99 on vinyl. Echo And The Bunnymen are back with a new album on Cooking Vinyl this week. Fans of modern folk sounds will simply adore the new collection from Nancy Elizabeth on the Leaf Label. We have just managed to get our hands on a few copies of the limited vinyl pressing of the Lisa Hannigan album, comes with a cd copy of the album inside the sleeve. Richard Hawleys superb new album is now in stock on limited double vinyl, the album comes with a limited edition signed print and a full copy of the album on cd inside the sleeve. Underground folk legend Gary Higgins is back with his first new album since “Red Hash” in 1973. The new Hockey album is now in stock on cd and vinyl. The Karen O [Yeah Yeah Yeahs] soundtrack to “Where The Wild Things Are” is now in stock on limited vinyl. Its turning into a week of noise rock here this week and who better than Lightning Bolt to blow your speakers. The new Maps album is well worth your attention. Fans of mellow late night electronic sounds will love the new Nudge album on the Kranky label. Math rock legends Polvo are back with a new album on the Merge label. More late night mellowness courtesy of Rameses III on the Type label. The Rem “Live At The Olympia” album is now in stock, comes as a double cd or dvd / double cd. Former Mazzy Star singer Hope Sandoval has a rather beautiful new album out this week. The new Swell Season album is now in stock, we have all three formats here now [cd , cd/dvd or double lp]. Swedish twins Taxi Taxi have just released their debut full length album and whilst we are talking of twins, Tegan And Sara have a new album out this week. And finally, to polish things off, our single of the week goes to the very beautiful new 7” from Villagers [all copies are hand numbered and very very limited]

The album features a great big mix of almost rootsy like rock sounds, euphoric post rock and haunting new wave. On the more mellow laid back tunes they kind of remind me of the meeting of my morning jacket and radiohead with lots of slow building post rock like guitar sounds thrown in. The album also features a couple of beautiful laid back country like ballads led by electric piano and rustic slide guitar, think of the verve with just a slight country twang. This one features a little help from panda bear [animal collective] and laetitia sadier [stereolab]. The album features a wonderful collection of psychedelic skewed pop sounds ranging from intimate lo fi sounds to some truly expansive almost euphoric like indie pop. At times comparable to the likes of animal collective, its probably a little more rustic and lo fi though, whilst also dipping into the world of acoustic psyche folk. October 2009-Cd-4ad-€13.99

Boredoms-Super roots 10-Originally released as a japanese import on cd, this is the first time super roots 10 has been available on vinyl. This double 12 inch pressing comes with a foldout poster sleeve. The ep features ant 10 original by the boredoms along with 2 remixes by japanese artist altz [bear records and jet set records] and a mix by norwegian artist lindstrom. The boredoms original version is a classic piece of propulsive rhythm led space age psyche rock featuring lots of seventies like psyche rock synth sounds. Altz takes the original track and turns it into a big sprawling piece of psychedelic trance rock, looping eyes original vocal into some kind of ritualistic chant. Lindstrom totally changes the mood with a funked up slice of rhodes heavy almost stevie wonder like sounds. Altz provides the last mix, turing up the bass and making things go all dubby. Braxton, tyondai-Central market-The second solo album from tyondai braxton, his first for the warp label. Braxton is a member of post rock outfit battles. The album features a kaleidescopic blend of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. You can kind of hear some hints of his work with battles from time to time but this is much more of an experimental collection of sounds with hints of everything from library music to fairground sounds to early electronic krautrock experimentation. It kind of sounds like an album that could be used to soundtrack some mad psychedelic animated movie, if that makes any sense to you. October 2009-Cd-Warp-€13.99

Early day miners-The treatment [normally retails at €15.99]-The early day miners return with a new collection on the secretly canadian label, the band are stripped down to four members feauring regulars dan burton and john dawson along with marty sprowles and johnny richardson. This is probably their most lush and layered collection to date sounding at times like a perfect underground pop record. The album features layers of shimmering guitars, without sounding overly shoegazing like, with lots of subtle electronic touches hovering around. October 2009-Cd-Secretly canadian-€12.99

The album features eight beautifully crafted songs with a distinctive late night feel about them. Its very much all very quiet and hushed on this one, which is a pretty good thing when you have a voice like hawley. Thankfully there is still plenty of his trademark almost hawaiian like guitar sounds on this album, if anything there is more than ever. Its probably comparable mostly to the quieter moments from the last two albums, coles corner and ladys bridge with maybe just a little less orchestration. It really is a very beautiful collection from one of the finest crooners around today. September 2009-Cd-Mute-€15.99

Higgins, gary-Seconds-Considering his last album was released in 1973 [red hash], its been a bit of a wait for fans of gary higgins for his second album to see the light of day. Higgins is joined by long time musical companions the random concept featuring dave beaujon, terry fenton, graham higgins and dave vandebogart [several of whom actually played on red hash]. The album features a beautifully intimate collection of laid back folk sounds with a nod towards the classic songwriting sounds of robert wyatt. Perfectly skewed and timeless sounds. Jesus lizard-Head / pure [deluxe reissue]-The debut full length album from the jesus lizard and their first to feature human drummer mac macneilly [previous ep pure featured a drum machine instead]. The band also features david yow, david simms and duane denison. Produced by steve albini. The album was originally released way back in 1990. Features one evening, sdbj, my own urine, if you had lips, 7 vs 8, pastoral, waxeater, good thing, tight n shiny and killer mchann. The album also comes packaged with the original debut ep pure which features blockbuster, bloody mary, rabid pigs, starlet and happy bunny goes fluff fluff along. The album now comes fully remastered with a fold out full colour double sided poster and new liner notes and photos. The album also comes with three bonus tracks chrome, killer mchann [live] and bloody mary [live].-Cd-Touch and go-€13.99

Johnston, daniel-Yip jump music-Originally released way back in 1983 this is long considered to be johnstons first proper full length release. The album was recorded on a portable cassette player at his home in texas. The album has now been digitally remastered and also comes with new packaging, housed in a lovely gatefold sleeve. The album is now also pressed on double vinyl. The package also comes with a bonus mp3 download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. One of the finest collections of lo fi outsider music evern recorded. October 2009-2lp-Eternal yip eye music-€15.99

Lemonade-Lemonade-The debut album from this new brooklyn based trio signed to the sunday best label. The album features a percussive mix of expansive dance, punk funk, trippy electronica and psychedelic synth rave. Its both funky and totally trippy at the same time, like some dubby take on the old rave sound. Parts of it remind me of the rapture covering some old rave classic, then given a dub treatment by the crazed hands of lee perry. You can probably guess at this stage that this is not an easy album to pigeonhole so maybe just have a listen for yourselves. October 2009-Cd-Sunday best-€12.99

Mudhoney-Mudhoney-Brand new remastered edition and pressed on lovely coloured vinyl courtesy of the sub pop label. This self titled album was their debut release from way back in 1989 and was produced by jack endino. The album now comes pressed on lovely pink vinyl. Also comes with a bonus mp3 download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. The album features this gift, flat out fucked, get into yours, you got it, magnolia caboose babyshit, come to mind, here comes sickness, running loaded, the farther i go, by her own hand, when tomorrow hits and dead love. Northerner-The ridings [limited edition double cd]-The ridings is the truly beautiful debut full length album from bradford based solo artist maring cummings. The album comes very lavishly packaged courtesy of the new home assembly label [also home to declining winter]. The album comes in a lovely three part foldout card sleeve. This is one of those rare beauties of modern ambient music that come along every now and again, its not something that would sound out of place on either the type or kranky labels. Its a beautiful blend of subtle fennesz like ambience and shoetgaze like multilayered guitars. Its full of dreamlike textures, both droning and dubby at the same time. It also features some lovely kind of ambient folk like acoustic guitar picking and plenty of endlessly echoing sound effects. The album also comes packaged with a bonus eleven track remix cd featuring remixes of tracks from the album by fieldhead, bracken, aus, the declining winter, part timer, glen shipley, gareth s brown, epic45, portal, winter north atlantic and yuri lugovskoy. Radiohead-Pablo honey-Reissue of their classic debut album from way back in 1993. The album now comes pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Radiohead-The bends-Originally released in 1995. The album is now back in print and pressed on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl. Features planet telex, the bends, high and dry, fake plastic trees, bones, nice dream, just, my iron lung, bullet proof i wish i was, black star, sulk and street spirit.-Lp-Emi-€15.99

Stevens, sufjan-The bqe-Sufjan stevens presents a film and musical suite exploring new york citys infamous brooklyn queens expressway [what happened to an album for every state]. The album comes packaged as a double disc featuring the original film in widescreen format, the original motion picture soundtrack, a 40 page booklet and a stereoscopic image reel for those of you who still have an old viewmater. The album features 13 classical based pieces ranging from dramatic broadway like showtune sounds to some truly minimal steve reich like movements. The album is performed with a full orchestra and is probably one of the most ambitious albums from a man who always likes to stretch the bounderies. Its quite a classical sounding album but with a certain playfullness about it at the same time. Comes presented in a lovely three part foldout sleeve. October 2009-2cd-Rough trade-€20.99

Swell season-Strict joy [limited edition double cd and dvd package]-Glen hansard and marketa irglova return with the follow up to their debut album which also turned into the soundtrack to the oscar winning film once. This time they are joined by regular frames members colm mac iomaire, joe doyle, rob bochnik and graham hopkins. The album also features guest spots from guitarist javier mas [leonard cohen], pianist thomas bartlett [doveman], percussionist chad tayler [chicago underground duo] and horn players steven bernstein and clark gayton [levon helms band]. This limited edition version comes on the american based anti label. The package features the normal album strict joy on the first cd, the second cd features a live album called one step away. The album also comes with a live dvd recorded at the riverside theater in milwaukee and features 19 live tracks along with bonus footage and interviews. Comes in a lovely card foldout digipack sleeve. October 2009-3cd-Anti-€21.99

Van zandt, townes-Live at the old quarter-Recorded live in houston texas in 1973. Originally released on his own tomato label. Features 23 classic live cuts from one of the finest songwriters of his time. The album is a beautifully intimate collection featuring just van zandt and his acoustic guitar. The selection kind of serves as a live best of album as much as anything else and is a fine introduction to the music of townes van zandt. Released as part of a series of seven classic early albums by townes van zandt on the domino label. Double cd in card slipcase outer sleeve. 2009-2cd-Domino-€12.99

Wilco-Wilco [the album]-Wilco return with their seventh studio album. Produced by the band themselves and jim scott. Recorded in roundhead studios in auckland and then finished in their own loft studios in chicago. Jim o rourke has now departed so the band on this one is jeff tweedy, john striratt, glen kotche, mikael jorgensen, nels cline and pat sansone. Its very much an album that sees wilco head back to their older rootsy almost melodic pop sound again with the majority of the tracks clocking in at the four minute mark. They seem to have ditched the more experimental sounds in favour of just good old style solid guitar driven roots sounds. There are a couple of rather beautiful laid back ballads thrown in complete with some awesome slide guitar action but on the whole this is wilco back in melodic rock teritory with an album of perfectly hummable roots rock anthems. The album comes pressed on a big slab of heavyweight 180 gram vinyl and is presented in a beautiful old style heavy card gatefold sleeve. Also features a full copy of the album on cd inside the sleeve. September 2009-Lp-Nonesuch-€23.99

Flaming lips-Embryonic-The flaming lips return with one of their most challenging and strangest collections in quite some time. The album is very much a collection of trippy rhythm led sounds with lots of tunes going way back to the hypnotic sounds of seventies krautrock. There is still plenty of their by now trademark psyche pop sounds but this is definitely an album that will get older fans of the band interested in their sound again. This is the most underground sounding album they have made in many years, and probably one of their finest in our opinion. Its full of hypnotic repetitive beats, psychedelic guitars and space rock like synth sounds. Its beautifully trippy and quite ambient at times. It really is a most wonderful collection of layered complex sounds at times building into thunderous noise before mellowing out into the most beautiful trippy psyche pop. 18 tracks spread over an hour there is something for all flaming lips fans but as i said its definitely one for older fans to reacquaint themselves with a band who never fail to challenge the listener. Animal collective-Spirit theyve gone spirit theyve vanished-This animal collective album was originally released way back in 2003 on the fat cat label, amazingly it has never been released on vinyl before. The album now benefits from a direct metal mastering workover and comes pressed on two slabs of 180 gram vinyl. Comes presented in a gatefold sleeve. The band at the time featured just the two original founding members of avey tare and panda bear. October 2009-2lp-Fat cat-€19.99

Arnalds, olafur-Found songs-Icelandic composer olafur arnalds delivers seven pieces of stunningly beautiful modern classical sounds. The majority of pieces are centred around his perfectly sparse piano based pieces with hints to the likes of harold budd or eric satie and that kind of minimalist sound. Arnalds does however also add in lots of lush strings throughout. He recently toured with sigur ros and you can definitely see why the band requested him to play. Modern ambient classical music at its very very best, a truly soothing and relaxing listen. October 2009-Cd-Erased tapes-€12.99

Big business-Mind the drift-Whilst also doubling up as drummer and bass player with the melvins this avant rock two piece make one hell of a noise in their own right. This guys make some truly superb sludge rock sounds coming across like some punk rock take on the doom rock of black sabbath, explosive and darkly evil at the same time. Bondy, aa-When the devils loose-Aa bondy is the former vocalist with grunge rockers verbena and this here is his second solo album [his first for fat possum]. Bondy is joined by macey taylor on bass and paul buchignani on drums. The album features a lovely laid back collection of rustic americana rootsy sounds, comparable at times to the likes of ryan adams. Boredoms-Super roots 10-Originally released as a japanese import on cd, this is the first time super roots 10 has been available on vinyl. This double 12 inch pressing comes with a foldout poster sleeve. The ep features ant 10 original by the boredoms along with 2 remixes by japanese artist altz [bear records and jet set records] and a mix by norwegian artist lindstrom. The boredoms original version is a classic piece of propulsive rhythm led space age psyche rock featuring lots of seventies like psyche rock synth sounds. Altz takes the original track and turns it into a big sprawling piece of psychedelic trance rock, looping eyes original vocal into some kind of ritualistic chant. Boris-At last feedbacker [reissued on 180 gram vinyl]-This album was originally released back in 2003 on the conspiracy label and gets a well deserved vinyl reissue on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. The clue to this album from one of japans finest drone rock outfit is in the name. The five long tracks are based around different forms of treating the pure noise from guitar feedback. The album opens up with a slow droning high pitched sounds with slowly strummed guitar chords calling to mind the earth hex album from last year. By the time we hit track three the lads are back in their noise driven garage rock phase with a huge piece of blistering psychedelic garage rock complete with wailing guitar solos. Braxton, tyondai-Central market-The second solo album from tyondai braxton, his first for the warp label. Braxton is a member of post rock outfit battles. The album features a kaleidescopic blend of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. You can kind of hear some hints of his work with battles from time to time but this is much more of an experimental collection of sounds with hints of everything from library music to fairground sounds to early electronic krautrock experimentation. Broderick, peter-Docile-Originally released in 2008 on 10 inch vinyl only, this truly stunning collection of solo piano pieces by peter broderick finally gets a well deserved cd release courtesy of kning disk. There is a beautiful live feel about the collection, each track pretty much blends into the next, making it seem like just one lengthy piece. Broderick, peter-Home [limited edition with bonus cd]-Brand new version of this classic peter broderick album on the bella union label. The album now comes packaged with a bonus disc featuring nine tracks recorded live in the studio over the course of two nights at the end of 2008. The album was originally released as a single cd version on the hush label in 2008. The original album features a truly haunting mix of acoustic folk, found sounds and electronic post production. At times it reminds me a bit of either elliott smith or mark kozelek with little gentle touches of electronic post production. Flaming lips-Embryonic-The flaming lips return with one of their most challenging and strangest collections in quite some time. The album is very much a collection of trippy rhythm led sounds with lots of tunes going way back to the hypnotic sounds of seventies krautrock. There is still plenty of their by now trademark psyche pop sounds but this is definitely an album that will get older fans of the band interested in their sound again. This is the most underground sounding album they have made in many years, and probably one of their finest in our opinion. Its full of hypnotic repetitive beats, psychedelic guitars and space rock like synth sounds. Its beautifully trippy and quite ambient at times. It really is a most wonderful collection of layered complex sounds at times building into thunderous noise before mellowing out into the most beautiful trippy psyche pop. 18 tracks spread over an hour there is something for all flaming lips fans but as i said its definitely one for older fans to reacquaint themselves with a band who never fail to challenge the listener. Lightning bolt-Earthly delights-Dare i begin this review by stating that lightning bolt have made their most accessible album to date with this new collection on the load label. Probably best known for their truly explosive live shows and white noise like avant rock, this album actually sheds a bit of the fuzz to reveal a truly superb collection of psychedelic grunge metal sounds, imagine a death metal version of black sabbaths doom rock. Its got to be said there are not many two piece outfits that can make a noise as good as this, its avant garde noise rock at its very very finest, pretty relentless from start to finish. On-Your naked ghost comes back at night-Whilst the name may not be that familiar to some of you out there, on is basically a collaborative project between sylvain chauveau and steven hess. But before you get all excited they simply provided the source material for this record which is pretty much a new album from ambient producer helge sten aka deathprod. Sten was given the original source material by chauveau and hess which he then worked his darkly evil magic upon. The end result is a stunning collection of slow moving and darkly evil ambient sounds calling the mind the icy soundscapes of the likes of christian fennesz with the bass heavy drone effects of biosphere. Its an album that really is best appreciated on headphones with so much happening deep down in the mix. Reigning sound-Love and curses-Its been five long years since we heard from greg cartwright and his reigning sound oufit now. Wilco-Wilco [the album]-Wilco return with their seventh studio album. Produced by the band themselves and jim scott. Recorded in roundhead studios in auckland and then finished in their own loft studios in chicago. Jim o rourke has now departed so the band on this one is jeff tweedy, john striratt, glen kotche, mikael jorgensen, nels cline and pat sansone. Its very much an album that sees wilco head back to their older rootsy almost melodic pop sound again with the majority of the tracks clocking in at the four minute mark. They seem to have ditched the more experimental sounds in favour of just good old style solid guitar driven roots sounds. There are a couple of rather beautiful laid back ballads thrown in complete with some awesome slide guitar action but on the whole this is wilco back in melodic rock teritory with an album of perfectly hummable roots rock anthems. Wyatt, robert-Dondestan [revisited]-The original version of dondestan ran over budget at the time of recording and was released without wyatt having mixed it to his liking. Seven years after its original release wyatt went back to the studio with the original tapes and decided to finish the album properly [it was originally released in 1991]. Having never heard the original version i have no idea how different this one sounds, wyatt stands by this revisted version so thats enough for me. The album now comes reissued on 180 gram vinyl by domino records and features the original artwork, complete with printed inner and lyrics. A broken consort-Box of birch-A broken consort is one of several monikers used by multi instrumentalist richard skelton. This album was originally released as a very limited pressing on his own label sustain release and has now been made more widely available by the always reliable tompkins square label. Animal collective-Strawberry jam-The one thing i most love about animal collective albums is the total challenge they offer up to people like me trying to describe it to you, yes its quite bonkers but in a totally hypnotic and catchy way, take a bit of the beach boys smile and add in some syd barret solo material along with lots of analog synth sounds and most likely hundreds of other sound effects, the album opens up with the truly superb peacebone single which is one of the finest pieces of psychedelic electronic pop you will hear all year round, the band seem to have this very special knack of holding all their sounds together with their beach boys likes vocal harmonies whilst all sorts of madness is looping around in the background, sixties wah wah like guitar sounds do battle with squelchy synths and moments of the out there rock of the flaming lips, this is probably their most accessible album to date so far and fans of the likes of arcade fire etc should really give this one a little spin as you will be very very pleasantly surprised, an early contender for weird album of the year so far, september 2007-Cd-Domino-€9.99

This is a much more stripped down almost folk like collection compared to mellow gold. The album also featured guest spots from members of built to spill, the spinanes and love as laughter. Cornershop-Judy sucks a lemon for breakfast-Yes indeed you are reading this correctly, cornershop are back with a brand new album and guess what, it sounds like they never went away. Its hard to believe its been seven years since we last heard from them with their album handcream for a generation and its twelve years since the classic brimful of asha single too. The album is simply packed with classic melodic quirky pop sounds, distinctly sounding like cornershop with minutes of the opening track hitting the stereo. If anything these guys have probably added a bit more rock action to their sound with hints of primal screams retro rock sound creeping into the mix from time to time. Department of eagles-In ear park-New project featuring grizzly bear member daniel rossen. Daniel is backed by his friend fred nicolaus plus a bit of help from grizzly bear members chris taylor and chris bear. This is a really catchy and rather eccentric blend of acoustic pastoral pop and pure sunshine psyche pop. There are elements of the beach boys vocal harmonies, the looped repitition of animal collective and the eastern european folk of beirut. The album has a lovely loose kind of rambling feel about it sounding a little like an old fashioned campfire free improv jam all cup up and pasted back together randomly. Its one of those rare albums that really does get beter and better with each listen and should be a must for all fans of animal collective, grizzly bear, beirut and psychedelic pastoral folk. 2008-Cd-4ad-€12.99

They are still a band that vocally remind me of the summer pop sounds of the beach boys but there the comparisons end. Featuring lots of quirky and infectiously catchy laid back pop songs with lots of electric piano and sixties like guitar sounds. Its one of those albums with some many layers that each listen delivers a totally different experience. Isis-Wavering radiant-The fourth full length studio album from isis. Produced by joe barresi who has worked with mammoth acts like tool, queens of the stoneage, melvins, kyuss and tool in the past. These guys continue to baffle the critics with their strange prog rock metal hybrid sound with this album also taking a fair share of dream like post rock along the way. Whilst their roots are definitely in stoner metal isis drop lots of synth heavy prog influences during the long instrumental passages in their songs. Johnston, josh-Asylum harbour-Josh johnston is an irish based songwriter and all round multi instrumentalist. Johnston has studied popular music in the university of salford and has featured in the past as pianist for singer songwriter roesy. The odd track even delves into some trance like mix of doom rock and synthy prog with some truly evil bass sounds. Its all quite hypnotic and almost dubby when put together featuring the perfect battle between live drums and heavily processed electronic sounds. Mccombs, cass-Catacombs-Baltimore based singer songwriter cass mccombs returns with a stunning new collection on the domino label. Following in from his rather beautiful dropping the writ album from 2008 this is another exceptional collection of superbly crafted laid back alt rock songs. Mccombs is both an astute lyric writter and classy guitar picker. The album has a kind of rootsy feel about it without delving too deep into either country or folk. Quite simply the eleven tracks included are faultless from start to finish both lyrically and in particular with his sublime guitar playing. Oneida-Rated o [triple vinyl with bonus mp3 download]-New york based psyche rock outfit return with the second part of their truly awesome thank you parents triptych of releases. The first part the experimental preteen weaponry came out last year on the jag jaguwar label also. This album is a veritable trip through the many different forms of psyche and space rock with so many twists and turns along the way its hard to keep up. The album rather strangely opens up with a slice of pounding scuzzed up techno coming across like the bug with fuzzed up guitars. The following few tracks are simply some of the most sublime kind of stoner psyche rock you are likely to hear all year, dare i say sounding like early hawkwind on even stronger drugs. Its full of pounding almost tribal like drum sounds, scuzzy analog synths and totally fuzzed to the max guitars. Thats just the first of 3 lps now. The second lp is much more straight ahead pounding krautrock like influenced psychedelic rock with more emphasis on the guitar led side of things with lots of heavy stoner rock tangents. The last of the three lps features some truly epic psychedelic rock sounds packed with hypnotic wailing guitars doing battle with squelchy analog synths. This truly is one hell of a mind blowing aural experience, maybe not to everybodys taste but if you want to head off on a totally psychedelic noise experience for an hour or two then you wont find better than oneida for meeting your needs. There is no one better than the fortuna pop label at keeping the true authentic spirit of jangly indie guitar pop alive these days. Its almost plays like a greatest hits of sounds made famous on the legendary c86 cassette release from years back. Get a great big melting pot and add the pastels, my bloody valentine, the jesus and mary chain, the shop assistants, the mighty lemon drops, the wedding present, early teenage fanclub and you have one of the finest collections of retro indie pop i have heard in quite some time. The album owes a lot to the former sounds of indie pop but really when it sounds this good who actually cares. Soap and skin-Lovetune for vacuum-Soap and skin is the work of one very talented 18 year old austrian artist by the name of anja plaschg and this here is her damn fine and rather kooky debut album. At times the album is kind of like a dark goth tinged take on the dramatic sounds of antony and the johnsons with some added old time german cabaret vibes. In other places she kind of reminds me of a slightly darker kate bush blended with the haunting ethereal sounds of marissa nadler. A couple of tracks even strike as some modern take on the early seventies funk sound with lots of chunky organ sounds making an appearence. Theres even a morricone like slide guitar led tune. Willard grant conspiracy-Paper covers stone-Willard grant conspiracy return to the loose label with their ninth full length album. The band were set a task by their label to head off into the wilderness and record a sparse album featuring new versions of older tunes and some newer tracks. The band duly obliged and found a repurposed barn, equipped with some old seventies recording desks and proceeded to play pretty much entirely live to tape. The end result is one of their most sparse and desolate collections to date, featuring no drums its almost like a solo rob fisher performance at times. These guys are probably one of the finest outfits in the goth like americana genre and to be honest the technique used to record this album just suits them so much.
