I should warn you it’s a fairly long list this week with tons of new titles and lots of older classics that we haven’t had in a few weeks. There is lots of classic older vinyl back in stock this week with lots of Jazz, Folk and Funk gems to enjoy.
Our album of the week this week stays at home in Ireland with Dublin based three piece Twinkranes getting our seal of approval, it’s a real gem of a psyche / space rock album on the highly respected Twisted Nerve label. We will have vinyl copies for you early next week.
Quite a few nice new Irish releases this week whilst I’m on the subject. We highly recommend the new album from Sending Letters To The Sea [Features Karl Him, Nina Hynes and Mark Garry], the Boys Of Summer cdr albums are well worth investigating if you like your droning psychedelic noise too.
The most recent Lou Barlow album is now in stock on vinyl [Lou of course is a former member of Take That].
We have a very limited amount of copies left of the rather superb new 10” mini album from Alela Diane and Alina Hardin.
Justin Broadrick is back with not one but two new albums this week. His first is a new kind of four track mini album under the name of Jesu and the second is a brand new collection from Final [that’s on cd and vinyl].
The new Do Make Say Think album is now back in stock on cd, we ran out rather quickly last week and I know a lot of you missed on it the first time round.
We have a couple of nice Daniel Johnston vinyl releases this week including his most recent album “Is And Always Was” which comes with an exclusive bonus track that didn’t feature on the cd, the album also comes with completely different artwork.
Our strangest record this week has to be the Moondog collaboration with Julie Andrews and Martyn Green, yes believe your eyes it is the legendary avant garde artist Moondog and famous actress Julie Andrews.
The Sufjan Stevens album “The BQE” is now in stock vinyl and what a beautiful package it is too. Comes with a giant full colour booklet, a comic book and three part foldout sleeve.
Speaking of deluxe packages, the new version of Nirvana’s “Bleach” is something of real beauty. The album is pressed on double heavyweight white vinyl and comes with a bonus live concert and large format booklet.

Astatke, mulatu with the heliocentrics-Inspiration information-Another super release as part of the inspiration information series brought to us by the good people at strut records [most recent one by tony allen and jimi tenor]. This here is the third one in the series and sees the rather legendary ethiopian bandleader mulatu astatke work with english based collective the heliocentrics. The sessions were recorded over the space of just one week in september of 2008 in london. Most people will probably know mulatus name from the now legendary ethiopiques series, he has featured on several of them at this stage. Thats a pretty good place to start with this album, its full of totally groove laden kind of ethio jazz vibes with plenty of seventies jazz funk influences too. Its got a bit of the hypnotic afro beat thing going on that the likes of fela kuti made famous. Its both very funky and avant garde at the same time, not often you can say that about an album. 2009-Cd-Strut-€9.99
Johnston, daniel-Is and always was-Is and always was features a collection of brand new studio recordings from underground legend daniel johnston. The album was produced by jason falkner and also features joey waronker on drums. The songs are very much distinctly daniel johnston like whilst long time fans will definitely notice the more lush and coherent production quality. Its a far cry from the old casette home recordings but thankfully the songs dont suffer in any way because of it. Johnston is still very much the mainmain here with waronker providing drums on most tracks and woody jackson adding acoustic guitar on a couple. The album features a collection of beautifully quirky and innocent indie pop / rock sounds. You will either love or hate this mans vocal delivery but its hard to argue with the quality of his songwriting and his particularly surreal take on life through his lyrics. Kings of convenience-Declaration of dependence-Its been a four year break since their last album and this is amazingly only their fourth full length album, i suppose they both keep busy with solo work and other things. In particular erlend oye has been making a name for himself with his new band whitest boy alive. This is probably their most stripped down album to date, its pretty much just two lads with their acoustic guitars, no drums or special guests this time. Its got to be said that this new approach totally suits what they do so well. These guys make twee acoustic folk like nobody else can, its almost like an indie folk take on the sounds of simon and garfunkel, full of late sixties / early seventies breezy folk pop. The two lads pretty much add dual vocals on every track creating these really lovely lush vocal harmonies throughout. Fans of the likes of belle and sebastian will rejoice at this collection of really beautiful indie folk pop. I have to admit it is totally addictive stuff. November 2009-Cd-Virgin-€11.99
Meanderthals-Desire lines-Now heres an album of some fairly beautiful post rock chillout music, perfect for all those dark winter nights. The album was written and produced by rune linbaek and the idjut boys. Its got a bit of everything from early tortoise to four tet to chillout balearic disco to that early warp ambient dub sound. Its a beautifully calming meeting of lush electronic sounds and live instrumentation, quietly funky with lots of live dubby bass sounds. Some of the tracks also feature some truly lovely slide guitar action, soaked in reverb to give a desert like almost ry cooder feel. Its an album that doesnt have any surprises waiting around the corner for you, just pure lush mellow chillout sounds. 2009-Cd-Smalltown supersounds-€9.99
Stevens, sufjan-The bqe [limited vinyl pressing with free comic book]-Sufjan stevens presents a film and musical suite exploring new york citys infamous brooklyn queens expressway [what happened to an album for every state]. The album features 13 classical based pieces ranging from dramatic broadway like showtune sounds to some truly minimal steve reich like movements. The album is performed with a full orchestra and is probably one of the most ambitious albums from a man who always likes to stretch the bounderies. Its quite a classical sounding album but with a certain playfullness about it at the same time. This limited edition vinyl pressing [only 1000 available] comes in a three part foldout sleeve with a large 32 page full colour booklet featuring liner notes and photos. Comes with a free bonus digital download coupon. The package also includes a free black and white version of the 40 page hooper heroes comic book created by stephen halker and sufjan stevens. Twinkranes-Spektrum theatre snakes [special offer, normally retails at €16.99]-The long awaited debut album from this dublin based three piece finally hits the shelves, courtesy of the twisted nerve label. The album was co produced by voice of the seven woods frontman ricky tomlinson. An album i have to admit has totally blown us away here in the shop and a real late contender for our irish album of the year. On first listen this is a real gem for lovers of all things krautrock but its only after repeated listens that the many many layers and sounds really begin to reveal themselves. It is definitely based in the kind of hypnotic repetitive sounds of seventies krautrock but dig deeper and you will hear bits of space rock, prog, pure psychedelia and even the kind of crazed early electronic trickery of the bbc radiophonic workshop. Featuring a truly propulsive rhythm section laying grooves down for some dr who like sound effects, these guys are not afraid to let loose and totally rock out from time to time too. Flaming lips-Embryonic-The flaming lips return with one of their most challenging and strangest collections in quite some time. The album is very much a collection of trippy rhythm led sounds with lots of tunes going way back to the hypnotic sounds of seventies krautrock. There is still plenty of their by now trademark psyche pop sounds but this is definitely an album that will get older fans of the band interested in their sound again. This is the most underground sounding album they have made in many years, and probably one of their finest in our opinion. Its full of hypnotic repetitive beats, psychedelic guitars and space rock like synth sounds. Its beautifully trippy and quite ambient at times. It really is a most wonderful collection of layered complex sounds at times building into thunderous noise before mellowing out into the most beautiful trippy psyche pop. 18 tracks spread over an hour there is something for all flaming lips fans but as i said its definitely one for older fans to reacquaint themselves with a band who never fail to challenge the listener. Ayub, safida-Five songs-Limited edition three inch cd release on the c joynes run label leith hill recordings. This pressing is limited to only 66 hand numbered copies and comes in a handmade paper sleeve. Safida ayub is a teather trainer from gulmit, a village in the upper hunza valley in the gilgit region of northern afghanistan. The five songs here include traditional songs, songs written by local poets and songs written by safida herself. The recordings were made directly to cassette tape back in 1996, then digitally transferred some ten years later. The mini album features five beautifully rustic solo acapella recordings, fans of everything from early alan lomax recordings to the likes of the sublime frequencies will love this one. Barlow, lou-Goodnight unknown [with mp3 download coupon]-Brand new solo album from the fairly legendary indie rock star lou barlow [sebadoh and dinosaur jr]. Barlow is joined by melvins drummer dale crover and isaad wasif from the yeah yeah yeahs. The album features a collection of mellow almost folk like acoustic sounds along with plenty of his trademark laid back slacker rock sounds. When he rocks out it really does bring me back to the classic early days of sebadoh or pavement with the more mellow solo based tracks more reminiscent of his folk implosion releases. The album features hair of the dog, of lillies and remains, hollow hills, dancing, kick in the eye, in fear of fear, muscle in plastic, the man with the x ray eyes and mask. The album features three rather lengthy excursions into some superbly crazed kind of avant garde psyche / space rock, minus the drums. Its got lots of weird droning synth sounds, swirling moog like sound effects and trippy trance like background sounds. Imagine a more trippy take on the sounds of the likes of cluster and that early experimental krautrock scene. Its like a perfect soundtrack to those classic late night cheese dreams. Boys of summer-V-Limited edition cdr release from this irish based experimental three piece on the munitions family label. The band features ivan pawle [sea dog], andy fogarty and paul g smyth [jimmy cake]. Features four pieces of hauntingly weird psychedelic avant rock sounds. Merging avant garde drone rock with hints of early krautrock like electronic experimentalism. Its the kind of sound i would imagine boris would make it you took away their guitars and replaced them with a couple of old moog synths. Its darkly evil and trippy throughout with lots of controlled feedback doing battle with space age synth sounds and oscillating sound effects. November 2009-Cd-Munitions family-€6.99
Cluster-Grosses wasser-Originally released in 1979 on the sky records label. Now reissued on the bureau b label. The band features two true legends from the seventies krautrock scene, namely hans joachim roedelius and dieter moebius [also of harmonia]. The album features six slices of slow building electronic ambient sounds polished off with the rather superb title track which takes up side two in its entirety. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl. 2009-Lp-Bureau b-€18.99
Diane, alela-Alela and alina-Very very limited ten inch only release from folk singer alela diane. The ep features six tracks recorded in june 2009 for her recent tour. The ep features two tracks written by alela diane, one written by her touring vocalist alina hardin, a cover of rake by townes van zandt and two traditional folk tunes bowling green and matty groves. All the recordings were specially made for this release and features both singers with just their acoustic guitars in the studios. Its a beautifully rustic collection of songs, like some old style sixties american folk recording. Its got hints of everything from old appalachian folk to the more sixties like sounds of joan baez and that kind of protest folk movement. Possibly two of the finest voices around at the moment. Fans of the likes of gillian welch will fall in love with this instantly. November 2009-10"-Fargo-€14.99
Do make say think-Other truths-The sixth full length album from this canadian post rock outfit, probaly one of the longest running bands of their ilk too. Their debut came out on 1998 and they have stayed true to the instrumental sounds of post rock even since. The album features four lenghty excursions into the many different sounds of instrumental post rock, the opener is just a classic piece of hypnotic guitar driven music with hints of early krautrock thrown in. The album mellows out a little after that burst and actually heads into the territory of fellow labelmates godspeed you black emperor at times. The much more dubby ambient like second track features some truly trance like wordless chanting courtesy of the akron family and lullabye arkestra. This band always seem to have just that little something special when it comes to making this kind of music, there is a lot of it out there but these guys have always been one of the best. Ensemble orlando-At the lake-The debut full length album from this danish based outfit, formed from the ashes of the naked. The album is pressed on limited edition 180 gram vinyl and comes in full colour gatefold sleeve. Released on their own independent label. The album features a lovely collection of classic indie rock like sounds. Its an album of clever, sometimes intricate, almost art rock like sounds. The slower more dirge like tunes kind of remind me a little bit of codeine, low and the dirty three all mixed together. The more uptempo tunes have a lovely jangly guitar sound about them with just the odd hint of some more rootsy rock influences. November 2009-Lp-Own label-€18.50

This is quite a different beast compared to his current recordings under the jesu name, i can now see the reason behind using two different names. This is much more of drone based sound, still very dreamlike in sound but this has a somewhat more darkly evil kind of fell to it. Its full of harsh shimmering drone effects, sounding like some cleverly controlled guitar feedback layered over tons of oscillating synth sounds. November 2009-Lp-No quarter-€15.99

The album features a collection of laid back rootsy americana like sounds with a lovely rustic kind of stripped down feel about them. Groundburst-Everything i didnt say and all the things i wanted to-Four track debut ep featuring towards nothing, head in the sand, even bears leave the forest and catharsis. Groundburst are an irish based instrumental three piece dealing in a kind of almost jazzy like post rock sound. Its an album featuring plenty of fuzzed up guitar heavy sounds interspersed with lots of mellow calmer moments. It kind of reminds a little bit at times of karate with maybe just a little bit more of a rock feel about it ala explosions in the sky. November 2009-Cds-Own label-€4.99
Hendrix, jimi-Band of gypsys-The only official live band of gypsys album to be authorised by hendrix before his death. The album was recorded on new years eve at the fillmore east in 1969. Features the truly awesome lineup of jimi hendrix, buddy miles and billy cox. The album features who knows, machine gun, changes, power to love, message to love and we gotta live together. This reissue comes packaged in a perfect replica of the heavy card gatefold original. A truly awesome collection of four hendrix originals and two buddy miles penned tracks. Hurley, michael-Ida con snock-Recorded at levon helms woodstock based studios. The album features seven brand new original tracks along with five covers of classic fifties rock n roll and country tunes. Hurley is backed by new york based band ida throughout. This man has been making music as far back as the late sixties greenwich village folk scene, hard to believe he still hasnt received the kind of recognition he truly deserves. Hurley has always leaned more towards the weird side of american folk, a man with a very distinctive vocal delivery. The album features some truly superb alt folk sounds with plenty of rustic bluegrass influences, a real dream for lovers of the more old style traditional folk sound. Isnaj dui-Unstable equilibrium-A collection of beautifully strange sounds on the home normal label from katie english. The album features a collection of drone based soundscapes with lots of scratchy string sounds, field recordings and just the odd touch of glitchy electronica. Its quite a haunting collection of sounds with parts of it calling to mind the likes of fennesz or biosphere, english tends to add in lots more live instrumentation to the sound though. Its the kind of album i could imagine being used to soundtrack a natural history program with lots of watery sound effects, bells, chimes and woodwind creating an almost forest like atmosphere. Jesu-Opiate sun [limited edition orange vinyl]-Limited edition four track ep from jesu on the caldo verde label, run by none other than mark kozelek [red house painters]. Johnston, daniel-Is and always was-Is and always was features a collection of brand new studio recordings from underground legend daniel johnston. The album was produced by jason falkner and also features joey waronker on drums. The songs are very much distinctly daniel johnston like whilst long time fans will definitely notice the more lush and coherent production quality. Its a far cry from the old casette home recordings but thankfully the songs dont suffer in any way because of it. Johnston is still very much the mainmain here with waronker providing drums on most tracks and woody jackson adding acoustic guitar on a couple. The album features a collection of beautifully quirky and innocent indie pop / rock sounds. You will either love or hate this mans vocal delivery but its hard to argue with the quality of his songwriting and his particularly surreal take on life through his lyrics. Kings of convenience-Declaration of dependence-Its been a four year break since their last album and this is amazingly only their fourth full length album, i suppose they both keep busy with solo work and other things. In particular erlend oye has been making a name for himself with his new band whitest boy alive. This is probably their most stripped down album to date, its pretty much just two lads with their acoustic guitars, no drums or special guests this time. Its got to be said that this new approach totally suits what they do so well. These guys make twee acoustic folk like nobody else can, its almost like an indie folk take on the sounds of simon and garfunkel, full of late sixties / early seventies breezy folk pop. The two lads pretty much add dual vocals on every track creating these really lovely lush vocal harmonies throughout. The album features five lenghty drone based pieces very much falling into the doom rock / ambient genre. Its a very dark haunting collection of sounds, at times sounding like boris during their droning phase or even nadja. Omo-The white album-Omo is a brand new project featuring ex karamasov members david muth and berit immig [also a member of the chap]. Its an album of very quirky electronic pop sounds, coming across like laurie anderson doing late eighties electro pop in a morr music kind of fashion or even kate bush stuck in front of an early casio keyboard. I have to admit it is quite quirky stuff but incredibly catchy at the same time, full of chunky beats and a somewhat dramatic almost spoken word like vocal delivery throughout. Pyramids with nadja-Pyramids with nadja-Brand new collaboration between pyramids and drone based outfit nadja. A place to bury strangers-Exploding head-Album number two from this brooklyn based outfit, their first for the mute label [previous album was on rocket girl]. These guys sound like some dreamlike amalgamation of some of the finest bands from the late eighties and early nineties. Its classic fuzzed up indie rock meets the more noise like side of the shoegazing sound. Imagine psychocandy by the jesus and mary chain played by my bloody valentine, the cure and new order with guest spots from both suicide and swervedriver [bet you thought you would never see their name mentioned in a review]. The band superbly fresh take on these sounds, i kind of think they are influenced by these bands rather than just trying to relive the past. Arnalds does however also add in lots of lush strings throughout. He recently toured with sigur ros and you can definitely see why the band requested him to play. Briggs, anne-Nottinghamshire tales [180 gram vinyl reissue]-This was the third and last solo ablum from anne briggs. Originally recorded back in 1973 this album was never released at the time as briggs wasnt happy with the album. The album finally got her seal of approval in the early nineties and was released under the name sing a song for you. The album also got a very limited vinyl release on the bo weavil label a few years back but has been out of print since then. This new version on the vinyl lovers label comes pressed on 180 gram vinyl with brief liner notes from briggs describing why she didnt like the album after recording it. In fairness to her the album is a rather beautiful collection of totally rustic folk songs ranging from pure a cappella folk to full band traditional english folk sounds. Candy claws-In the dream of the sea life-The debut physical release on irish label indiecater records, also home to some fantastic irish digital reissues and the mp3 hugger blog. Candy claws are an american based two piece, this is their debut full length which was originally self released on their own label. This is a truly beautiful collection of almost dreamlike mellow pop sounds, dont let the word pop put you off though, i use it in the good way. They almost remind me of the fuzzed up wall of noise of my bloody valentine and the melodic vocal harmonies of animal collective. Its a really beautifully melodic collection of layered sounds, shimmering guitars, lush synths and heaps of taped ocean sounds. I can kind of hear a bit of the intimate glitchy pop of the likes of mum from time to time too. Its a truly hypnotic and almost trance like listen seamlessly merging live instruments with lots of digital trickery, theres even some sultry hawaiian slide guitar action going on. This is one of those rare beauties that just appears every now and then out of the blue. Cave-Psychic psummer-Brand new album on important records from this chicago based krautrock obsessed outfit. Featuring eleanor and matthew friedberger, the album was recorded by former sebadoh member jason loewenstein who also joins in on bass. Completing the lineup for this new album is robert damico on drums. The album features twelve of the finest songs this band have written in their career, a much more straight ahead immediate sound with this one. Its full of piano led indie rock sounds with plenty of quirky twists and turns. There has always been a bit of a broadway musical vibe about this band, perhaps its their use of piano instead of guitar as the main instrument, if there was ever a broadway play written about the history of indie rock then the score would have to be written by the friedbergers. Perfectly formed melodic indie pop / rock sounds from two of the finest songwriters around at the moment. Flaming lips-Embryonic-The flaming lips return with one of their most challenging and strangest collections in quite some time. The album is very much a collection of trippy rhythm led sounds with lots of tunes going way back to the hypnotic sounds of seventies krautrock. There is still plenty of their by now trademark psyche pop sounds but this is definitely an album that will get older fans of the band interested in their sound again. This is the most underground sounding album they have made in many years, and probably one of their finest in our opinion. Its full of hypnotic repetitive beats, psychedelic guitars and space rock like synth sounds. Its beautifully trippy and quite ambient at times. It really is a most wonderful collection of layered complex sounds at times building into thunderous noise before mellowing out into the most beautiful trippy psyche pop. 18 tracks spread over an hour there is something for all flaming lips fans but as i said its definitely one for older fans to reacquaint themselves with a band who never fail to challenge the listener. Flannery, mick-Evening train-The debut album from this irish born singer now residing in new york, its a rather fine debut too for a man who has only hit 21 years of age, the album is based around slightly traditional folk sounds with the added spice of a fine gravely voice not too far away from sounding like a cross between nick cave and tom waits, its a highly rewarding almost concept like album as it tells the story of two brothers and mick has managed to hold the whole album together with some highly polished songwriting and fine musicianship, there is not a bad song on this record, this album was originally released on his own label back in 2005, february 2007-Cd-Emi-€15.99
Fleet foxes-Fleet foxes [limited edition double cd version]-The debut album finally arrives from this seattle based five piece on the bella union label. Its only takes a few minutes of this album to know this will possibly one of the feelgood albums of the summer this year. Their sound features the blissful vocal harmonies of the beach boys, a wee bit of classic seventies americana, late sixties vocal led folk and lots of lush chamber pop sounds. Its very much a modern folk record but spiced up with those sublime vocal harmonies and plenty of psyche pop influences. You will hear influences from the beach boys, early dylan, simon and garfunkel , the band, nashville country, crosby stills and nash, mamas and papas, sixties psychedelic folk and summery garage pop. Galt, stefan-Before that i did this-The debut full length album from this very very talented irish guitar picker. On this album galt turns his hand to a bit of everything from jazz to blues to ragtime and traditional folk. In the past she has worked with the likes of pan sonic, throbbing gristle, johann johannsson, skuli sverrisson and ben frost. Johannsson, johan-Englaborn-This album was originally released on the touch label back in 2002 and was johannssons very first solo album. The album has been out of print for a few years on vinyl, it was reissued on cd on 4ad in 2007. Anyone familiar with johannssons ibm1401 album from last year will be very excited about hearing some of his earlier material. The album is a beautiful collection of modern classical sounds which sees johannsson loop threads of strings and piano over each other to create some both very old and totally modern sounding. Whilst the strings and piano are all live you will notice very subtle use of electronic effects as small elements are gently looped or choral sounds fed through a vocoder. Beautifully calming stuff. Lightning bolt-Earthly delights-Dare i begin this review by stating that lightning bolt have made their most accessible album to date with this new collection on the load label. Probably best known for their truly explosive live shows and white noise like avant rock, this album actually sheds a bit of the fuzz to reveal a truly superb collection of psychedelic grunge metal sounds, imagine a death metal version of black sabbaths doom rock. Its got to be said there are not many two piece outfits that can make a noise as good as this, its avant garde noise rock at its very very finest, pretty relentless from start to finish. Moritz von oswald trio-Vertical ascent-Moritz von oswald has been making some genre defying electronic music since the early nineties under several guises including rhythm and sound, maurizio and basic channel. This collection features a host of live improv shows and sessions, edited and remixed by von oswold afterwards. The live trio features von oswold on live mixing and organ, sasu ripatti on drums and max loderbauer on synths. Ripatti also records under the name vladislav delay while loderbauer is a member of sun electric. The album features four lengthy pieces of dubby electronica drifting into some beautiful ambient dubstep at times and then at other moments getting all glitchy minimal techno. The album was recorded at sonic ranch studios in texas and features contributions from all members of the supporting band. Oberst has pointed out that this collection is very much a collaborative project and features songs written by all members of the band. On-Your naked ghost comes back at night-Whilst the name may not be that familiar to some of you out there, on is basically a collaborative project between sylvain chauveau and steven hess. But before you get all excited they simply provided the source material for this record which is pretty much a new album from ambient producer helge sten aka deathprod. Sten was given the original source material by chauveau and hess which he then worked his darkly evil magic upon. The end result is a stunning collection of slow moving and darkly evil ambient sounds calling the mind the icy soundscapes of the likes of christian fennesz with the bass heavy drone effects of biosphere. Its an album that really is best appreciated on headphones with so much happening deep down in the mix. The tracks have all been rather beautifully cleaned up and really have never sounded better. Sigur ros-Hvarf heim-Originally released in 2007 as a limited edition double cd set, both albums have now been compiled onto one cd. The package features two very different albums to coincide with the release of the film haima. Hvarf features five brand new electric recordings from the band. Heim features six live acoustic versions of older tracks. Its really hard to believe these tracks are recorded acoustically as they are up their with tracks from the first album agaetis byrjun for dynamics and volume. Stunning stuff. Sleepy sun-Embrace-Sleepy sun are a san franciscan based psyche rock outfit. These guys deal in the more laid back side of psyche rock calling to mind the sounds of black mountain or brightblack morning light. Its very much an album owing a lot to the hazy summer sounds of seventies psyche rock with sleepy sun adding just the odd hint of avant rock and wigged out blues. Its definitely one for fans of the likes of anything from comets on fire to earthless. Speck mountain-Some sweet relief-The return of one of our favourite bands around here at the moment and their first for the carrot top label. The previous album summer above came out last year on the peace frog label. Its another delicious slice of modern folkiness with hints of the classic ethereal sounds of mazzy star and the rambling slowcore of either galaxy 500 or low. What these guys add to truly stand out from the crowd is the stunning voice of marie claire balabanian sounding like hope sandoval with a slight country twang. It really is the voice of an angel as far as we are concerned. The album features some haunting slow building electric folk sounds with lots of shimmering guitar sounds and lovely warm organ vibes. Sunn o-Monoliths and dimensions-Stephen o malley and greg anderson are joined by regular contributors attila csihar, oren ambarchi and earths dylan carlson on this their seventh album. More surprising though is the addition of brass, reed, strings and a viennese female choir alongside composer eyving kang and one time sun ra and john coltrane contributor julian priester. The album features four lengthy pieces spread over a total of 54 minutes. The opening track is simply classic dirge like doom metal that will be pure heaven to long time fans. Coming as more of a surprise may be the second track opening up with the angelic voices of a full choir giving off a sound that i can only describe as church metal. Its uplifting and utterly evil at the same time. The closing track reminds me slightly more of the twangy guitar of the last few earth albums with lots of added brass. Terry, sonny and brownie mcghee-Midnight special-A compilation of two albums originally recorded in august 1960. The first ten tracks were originally released on the prestige label under the title blues and folk. To be honest its quite funky and very seventies like at times, it doesnt actually sound as strange as you might think. Unthanks, the-Heres the tender coming-Brand new album from the band formerly known as rachel unthank and the winter set, the name change reflecting the long established reality that the band is actually co fronted by rachels sister becky unthank. A slightly more full sound compared to the last album bairns with the addition of a string quarte, brass, percussion and piano. Its another truly stunning collection of folk songs deeply rooted in the old traditional sounds of english folk music from the sixties and seventies with the addition of the brass adding a kind of old time mining town brass band effect. There is still plenty of that sparse vocal led folk sound going on here, dont worry too much as its not that different to bairns. Its an album that will more than satisfy lovers of modern acoustic folk music and fans of the older sounds of fairport convention, martin carty and waterson / carthy. This is probably one of the most beautiful songs written by this very talented songwriter. Villagers is former immediate member conor o brien. This is his follow up to the truly superb hollow kind ep from earlier this year [also on any other city]. Wavves-Wavvves-Wavves return with a blistering new collection of the most fuzzed up garage rock you are likely to hear all year round. The album, without the fuzz, kind of reminds of the mighty sounds of the pixies meets yo la tengo in a slightly garage rock style. What wavves then do to what is actually quite a catchy collection of songs is feed absolutely everything through the biggest fuzzbox imagineable. The end result is like some totally lo fi bedroom take on the beach boys meets the pixies recorded onto a cheap dictaphone cassette. After a few listens the noise becomes less obvious and you realise there are some truly awesome indie rock songs hidden underneath. Its kind of like hearing psychocandy by the jesus and mary chain all over again. Fans of yo la tengo and the pixies should give this one a bit of time. Why-Eskimo snow-Why returns with his fourth album and the much awaited follow up to alopecia. This man gets further and further away from the early alt hip hop sounds of his first few albums with every new release. Yoni wolf returns with his most guitar driven collection to date, its very much a full band affair with josiah wolf, doug mcdiarmid, andrew broder and mark erickson featuring throughout. The album was produced by mark nevers, who also guests on some recordings. Its a lovely bright and breezy collection of almost folky like mellow rock sounds with wolfs almost spoken like vocal delivery harking back a wee bit to the older anticon days. Wilco-Wilco [the album]-Wilco return with their seventh studio album. Produced by the band themselves and jim scott. Recorded in roundhead studios in auckland and then finished in their own loft studios in chicago. Jim o rourke has now departed so the band on this one is jeff tweedy, john striratt, glen kotche, mikael jorgensen, nels cline and pat sansone. Its very much an album that sees wilco head back to their older rootsy almost melodic pop sound again with the majority of the tracks clocking in at the four minute mark. They seem to have ditched the more experimental sounds in favour of just good old style solid guitar driven roots sounds. There are a couple of rather beautiful laid back ballads thrown in complete with some awesome slide guitar action but on the whole this is wilco back in melodic rock teritory with an album of perfectly hummable roots rock anthems. World is shaking-Cubanismo from the congo [1954 to 1955]-An exceptional collection of rare sounds from the congo courtesy of the always reliable honest jons label. These are the guys that brought us the stunning london is the place for me compilations too. The album is centred around a brand new fusion of sounds from the congo in the mid fifties as ex pats started to return with all these latin american imported 78s. As local bands began to incorporate these latin rhythms into their own sound this whole new sound was born. Its kind of a similar story to the days in jamaica when soul music was first introduced to early reggae recording artists. As ever with honest jons the album comes with a detailed booklet packed with information on the artists and this ever evolving sound. The albums were previously released under the names rock formations and pothead. The album features some of the most beautiful psychedelic stoner surf rock you are ever likely to hear. Some of the earlier sounds of the mans ruin desert sessions spring to mind . The album features a collection of expansive slide guitar led instrumental tracks with slighty more emphasis on the more laid back side of stoner rock. Imagine a blend between early kyuss and ry cooders paris texas soundtrack. For lovers of guitar led stoner rock this is just manna from heaven. 2008-Cd-Lexicon devil-€15.99
Yawning sons-Ceremony to the sunset-Collaboration between desertrock veteran and yawning man member gary arce and english instrumental rock outfit sons of alpha centauri. Anyone familiar with the yawning man album [vista point] from last year will know exactly what to expect from this new collaboration. The album is packed with laid back slide guitar led stoner rock sounds coming on like a much more laid back kyuss with the desert like guitar sounds of ry cooder. Fans of the old desert sessions from the mans ruin label will adore this one, its full of meandering brooding stoner rock with of extensive guitar workouts to keep you old rock fans happy too. Yo la tengo-Popular songs-The album opens up with a rather choice slice of orchestral driven psycye rock before hitting their more familiar melodic indie rock with some choice vocals from drummer georgia. For me this album really shows off this bands ability to hop between several different genres with such ease, its no surprise they have been making music since 1986. They are probaly one of the last remaining true american indie rock bands, still featuring the same three members after all these years. The album features a bit of everything from pure fuzzed up classic old style indie rock to some beautifully laid back indie pop, backed by an extended 15 minute psyche rock like jam at the end. Its an album that brings me back to an earlier classic which was and then nothing turned itself inside out from 2000 with its blend of darker late night gems and fuzzy indie rock, right down to the lengthy closing tunes. If you split the album into two distinct halves you get nine blasts of classic yo la tengo and then finishing off with 3 beautifully lengthy jam like tunes. Long time fans will definitely have this one in their list of top five yo la tengo albums and if you are new to this band you probably wont find a better way to introduce yourself to one of the very best indie rock bands on the planet at the moment.
