Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

The long overdue Kraftwerk reissues on vinyl are now in stock, pretty much every album they released, all remastered with beautiful new booklets.
Speaking of vinyl reissues, we have lots of new titles again this week in the classic vinyl section including the likes of Leonard Cohen, Incredible String Band, Blind Blake, Modern Lovers and Patti Smith.

Remember Charlotte Hatherley [former Ash guitarist], well she’s back with her third solo album.
Morrissey has just released “Swords”, featuring a collection of b sides from the singles from his last three albums. Dylan here did suggest maybe it was the first of many themed albums based around various suburbs of Dublin, what a great idea that would be.

Drunken boat-Plumb the depths-The return of this rather excellent post rock band [one man band should be] on say what you mean records. The band released an ep in 2007 [cut the engines raise the sails] also on the same label. Mainman brian walsh is this time joined by drummer / percussionist dror zur. This is a much more intense listen compared to the very laid back sounds of the debut ep. Its a collection of totally fuzzy post rock and slowcore sounds comparable at times to the meeting of slint and codeine. The album also has some beautifully rambling dirty three like passages with lots of looping intricate guitar action going on over almost jazz like brushed drum sounds. The album comes in a lovely screenprinted recycled card sleeve with printer inner poster. November 2009-Cd-Say what you mean records-€7.99
Fieldhead-They shook hands for hours [with limited free remix cd]-Fieldhead is an ambient electronic producer by the name of paul elam, he is also one half of fellow home assembly outfit the declining winter. To the best of my knowledge this is his debut full length at fieldhead and what a treat this is for fans of top quality mellow ambient electronica. This is the kind of aural treat that will sound like heaven to fans of boards of canada, four tet, biosphere, fennesz and even the more ambient side of dubstep [ala burial]. Its really is a most beautiful collection of ambient soundscapes and delicate textured hip hop. An album featuring the most delicate of beats falling somewhere between the mellow hip hop of four tet and the dubstep of burial. Its full of layered sounds which sees live instruments seamlessly merging with all manner of glitchy digital soundscapes. This is probably one of the finest ambient electronic albums we have heard all year here from a new label dealing in the very best electronic music coming out of the bradford area at the moment. The album also comes with a free bonus remix cd featuring remixes of tracks from the album by jasper tx, pausal, northerner, the declining winter, library tapes, matthew collings, james yates, yuri lugovskoy, seaworthy, machinefabriek and glissando. November 2009-2cd-Home assembly music-€10.99

Flaming lips-Embryonic-The flaming lips return with one of their most challenging and strangest collections in quite some time. The album is very much a collection of trippy rhythm led sounds with lots of tunes going way back to the hypnotic sounds of seventies krautrock. There is still plenty of their by now trademark psyche pop sounds but this is definitely an album that will get older fans of the band interested in their sound again. This is the most underground sounding album they have made in many years, and probably one of their finest in our opinion. Its full of hypnotic repetitive beats, psychedelic guitars and space rock like synth sounds. Its beautifully trippy and quite ambient at times. It really is a most wonderful collection of layered complex sounds at times building into thunderous noise before mellowing out into the most beautiful trippy psyche pop. 18 tracks spread over an hour there is something for all flaming lips fans but as i said its definitely one for older fans to reacquaint themselves with a band who never fail to challenge the listener. Features guest spots from karen o [yeah yeah yeahs], mgmt and german mathematician thorsten wormann. October 2009-Cd-Warners-€18.99

Alan mx-Warpsichord-The debut album from alan mx, released on the smalltown america label. The first thing that hit me about this album is the amount of intricate studio trickery going on throughout, its full of the most clever use of looping and sampling effects, where sounds are almost repeating upon themselves. Some of it actually reminds me a bit of thom yorkes eraser album, its like some weird electro meets disjointed electronica hybrid. He has actually managed to merge mellow indie rock sounds with the kind of crazed electronic sounds of the likes of matmos, if that makes any sense to you. Its very very clever and highly enjoyable too. November 2009-Cd-Smalltown america-€12.99
An taobh tuathail-Volume 3-The third in this wonderful series curated by the superb radio show on rte radio na gaeltachta. The album features tracks from loner deluxe, roshi feat pars radio. Essie jain, rsag. Factory kids, b movie lightning, rollers sparkers, miwon, circlesquare, jacaszek, them use them, mount kimbie, the caretaker, animal collective and peter and the wolf. Not only is this a great introduction to the radio show but its also a truly superb collection of late night electronica, weird folk and mellow post rock. November 2009-Cd-Psychonavigation-€9.99
Apse-Climb up-The return of this electronic tinged post rock outfit, this time on the atp label. The album has some lovely dramatic instrumental passages sounding like some cinematic take on the meandering vibes of post rock. November 2009-Cd-Atp recordings-€17.99

Blind blake-Back biting bee blues-Its fair to say we are dealing with one of the true blues legends here, a man seen by many as being the inventor of ragtime blues guitar. He died at the age of 40 and left a host of recorded material behind him, made at the time for the paramount label. The album features a selection of seventeen of his finest recordings [no dates or details attached for geeks like me but what the hell]. Carr, katy-Coquette-The third album from singer songwriter katy carr, a romantic and powerful collection of mellow pop songs themed around the world of the war time coquette. An album of mellow pop beauty with lots of dramatic string sounds, coming across like some modern day take on the sounds of wartime german cabaret and vaudeville musicals. The more string led sounds actually quite remind me of the most recent julie feeney album, full of dramatic twists and turns, all led by a string quartet. Quite a haunting mix of kooky traditional folk sounds, chamber pop and forties jazz. November 2009-Cd-Deluce recordings-€12.99

The album features a big throbbing selection of dark wave like electro sounds with plenty of nods towards the gothic like rumblings of joy division, the cure and even very early new order. Its full of darkly sombre synth led sounds, maybe with a touch of early depeche mode in there somewhere. The album comes packaged with a free mp3 download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. November 2009-Lp-Matador-€17.99
Dead flags-Anymore-Limited edition one track ep from this dublin based indie rock outfit. Coming across like a slightly more melodic indie rock sounding take on the likes of the strokes. November 2009-Cds-Own label-€1.00
Do make say think-Other truths [with free copy]-The sixth full length album from this canadian post rock outfit, probaly one of the longest running bands of their ilk too. Their debut came out on 1998 and they have stayed true to the instrumental sounds of post rock even since. The album features four lenghty excursions into the many different sounds of instrumental post rock, the opener is just a classic piece of hypnotic guitar driven music with hints of early krautrock thrown in. The album mellows out a little after that burst and actually heads into the territory of fellow labelmates godspeed you black emperor at times. The much more dubby ambient like second track features some truly trance like wordless chanting courtesy of the akron family and lullabye arkestra. This band always seem to have just that little something special when it comes to making this kind of music, there is a lot of it out there but these guys have always been one of the best. The album comes with a free cd copy inside the sleeve. As always with constellation the album also comes with some lovely printed inner sleeve artwork, this one comes with a lovely poster aswell. Espers-Iii [limited edition heavy card sleeve]-You sometimes wonder how this outfit find the time to get together under the espers banner, they all seem to do so much outside of the band. Meg baird has been busy with a solo career and collaborating with sharron kraus. Helena espvall has been working with ghost guitarist masaki batoh. Otto hauser moonlights as drummer with vetiver and greg weeks now runs his own label language of stone. Anyway, they have all managed to get together in the studio again and have come up with another truly haunting collection of psychedelic folk sounds like only espers know how. Yet again steeped in the sounds of traditional english folk music, this album features a lot more electric guitar work than previous outings. Its full of fuzzy psyche like guitar sounds and beautifully rambling acid folk influences. Comes in a really cool oversized card sleeve. November 2009-Cd-Wichita-€20.99

Foster, josephine-Graphic as a star-Brand new album from folk singer josephine foster, now signed to the fire records label. The album features a total of twenty six short [ish] tracks based on the poems of emily dickenson, so as you can imagine happy fare it is not. Having said that it is a truly beautifully haunting collection of totally rustic folk sounds featuring just foster and her acoustic guitar. There is a lovely raw almost live in the studio feel about the album, the real standouts on the album are the odd acapello tunes. It kind of reminds me of those old classic albums that alan lomax used to produce, recording on the fly in peoples houses. A real rustic folk gem. November 2009-Cd-Fire records-€12.99
Furlong, conor-Playing with fire-Brand new album from irish singer songwriter conor furlong. The album is pressed on cdr and comes in a card sleeve. Githead-Landing-The third full length album from this outfit fronted by former wire frontman colin newman. The band also features malka spigel [minimal compact], max franken [minimal copact] and robin rimbaud [aka scanner]. The album features a collection of dubby like electronic sounds, coming across at times like a more avant garde massive attack meets the slightly kooky sounds of bjork. The album is released as part of the ongoing in the fishtank collaboration series by the konkurrent label. Its hard to believe its been three years since we have had a new addition to this truly wonderful series [last one was isis and aereogramme in 2006]. The idea behind the series is to lock two very different bands in a room together for a few days and let them come up with some original music together. The album features seven pieces which very much sound more like fennesz backed up by sparklehorse than anything else. Its full of his classic trademark scratchy sound effects as linkous and co add in some beautifully sparse instrumentation. Linkous also adds some delicate vocal sounds on a couple of tracks with the almost folk like vibes of if my heart really standing out for me. Absolutely beautiful stuff and real must for fennesz fans. November 2009-Lp-Konkurrnent-€13.99
Teeth mountain-Teeth mountain-A truly hypnotic album featuring four lengthy tribal like avant / psyche folk workouts. This baltimore collective certainly deal in a very drug induced kind of trance like sound, full of sixties psychedelic influences but all done with a much more modern almost alt rock kind of twist. Its a collection of totally hypnotic almost dubby like afrobeat sounds with plenty of jimi tenors avant jazz touches. The album features twenty short pieces of pure ecclectic madness, what else would you expect the man behind trunk records to come up when making his own music. Its classic outsider music featuring psychedelic jazz, electronic funk, weird radiophonic like sound collages and all manner of minimal electronic sounds. To be honest its quite funky and very seventies like at times, it doesnt actually sound as strange as you might think. Walker is joined by maruga booker on trap and frame drums, perry robinson on clarinet, badal ray on tablas, rishi on bass and mark whitecage on flute. The album features six long instrumental tracks in a similar vein to the likes of john fahey or robbie basho, full of avant folk, indian and eastern european influences. Its a beautifully hypnotic collection of guitar led folk sounds, featuring some truly awesome guitar picking. Walker seems to have this amazing ability to go from avant garde drone like sounds to indian sitar led vibes with such ease. November 2009-Cd-Tompkins square-€16.99
Weezer-Ratitude-A brand new weezer album arrives in the shop and i get to thinking, do you really need me to describe what it possibly might sound like. You all know the weezer sound at this stage, well no prizes for guessing what this one might sound like. Its full of catchy fuzzed up college rock sounds full of indie rock and post punk nuances. I have to admit its ruined by the totally rubbish single cant stop the party featuring guest vocals from lil wayne, its probably one of the worst singles of the year so far. In 1967 fahey then went back in to the studio and rerecorded ten of the twelve songs for a brand new version of the album released the same year. Finke, martin-Make daylight-Brand new eleven track album from this irish born songwriter. Its been a few years since we heard from mr finke and you can tell from this very intricate collection that he has been busy tinkering away in the studio with this wonderful new collection. The album features a very beautiful blend of intimate folk sounds and some perfectly chosen lush beats. At times the album kind of reminds me of a more folky based four tet as finke seamlessly blends the organic sounds of acoustic guitars with beautifully hypnotic beats. The more intimate acoustic based songs have a kind of nick drake meets elliott smith vibe about them with finke then adding in lots of scratchy looping sound effects in the background. Another perfectly formed gem from a very talented irish songwriter. April 2009-Cd-Parallel music-€12.99

Its got a bit of a sleazy kind of bluesy edge to it from time to time calling to mind some of the earlier white stripes albums. Comes in a card gatefold sleeve. July 2009-Lp-Moshi moshi-€25.99

Harvey, pj-White chalk-Pj harvey returns with possibly her most stripped down album in many many years. The album pretty much features just harvey behind the piano with just a little help here and there from long time collaborator john parish. Along with the barest of brush drums and some very faint string sounds there is nothing else to accompany harvey as she makes her way through eleven of her most intimate songs to date. Its probably the very first time that the comparisons to kate bush have actually been accurate as harvey finds her way around the vocal scale with such ease. A very beautifully raw album. Originally released in 2007 the album has now been reissued on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. 2009-Lp-Island-€22.99

Its a great big wall of sound with lots of reverb laden fuzzed up guitar sounds, wailing synths and almost tribal like minimal drum sounds. October 2009-Cd-City slang-€17.99

The label is run by gruff rhys from the super furry animals [and neon neon mainman]. The album features some beautifully mellow folky based sounds with lots of hints of classic old style psyche folk from the sixties. September 2009-Cd-Irony bored-€15.99
Phoenix-Wolfgang amadeus phoenix-The return of this ultra cool and highly sophisticated french pop outfit with their new album on the v2 label. Its another fine collection of seventies tinged guitar pop sounds. Its damn near impossible not to get sucked in by these guys with their hook laden guitar pop coming across at times like some space rock take on the likes of elo mixed with the slightly glam pop sounds of some roxy music tunes. Its totally hip shaking and very clever at the same time without ever getting too cheesy. June 2009-Cd-V2-€15.99

The band now features original member jay farrar and dave bryson, andrew duplantis, chris masterson and mark spencer. The album also features eleanor whitmore on violin. No surprises on this one here with farrar returing to alt country roots, if anything this is a more raw and loose sounding record since the band was reformed in 2005. Its an album steeped in country roots tradition, featuring lots of sublime lap steel guitar playing and plenty of darkly sombre country sounds. November 2009-Cd-Rounder-€18.99
Soul messages from dimona-Numbero group presents [various artists]-Another killer collection of obscure funk and soul from the numero group. This one features a collection of recordings from the dimona region in israel made between 1975 and 1981. The core sounds came from a group of detroit and chigaco based musicians residing in the region. The highly detailed booklet included is full of lots of facts and retells the story how this music came to israel in the first place. The sounds included on the cd features some truly top quality soul and soulful funk sounds with a bit of everything from the energetic sounds of a james brown soundalike to some more laid back al green like soul. There is even a track calling to mind the pure soulful pop of the jackson five. Its like a soulful summer party in one neat package. Longtime collaborator mark lanegan provides vocals on no less than ten of the thirteen tracks whilst also co writing a fair few of them too. Other guest of note include jason pierce [siiritualized], mike patton, richard hawley, gibby haynes [butthole surfers], rosa agostino [red ghost], wendi rose, carmen smart adn tjae cole. Whitest boy alive-Rules [aka erlend oye]-The second album from this electro pop outfit fronted by ex kings of convenience vocalist erlend oye. The album features an infectiously catchy blend of laid back electro pop sounds, seventies disco and some weird king of guitar led house hybrid. Its all beautifully lush and quite laid back featuring lots of live funky bass, jazzy like guitar sounds and oyes sumptuous vocals. Its one of those albums that you really have to hear yourself to truly appreciate but i can imagine fans of the likes of air, phoenix and classic eighties electro pop truly loving this one. Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.
Here goes with our highlights from this week.
Album of the week goes to the brand new album from Colorado based Candy Claws. I should also mention its on special offer for only €9.99 too.
The third in the series of limited edition Ash 7”s is now in stock, they won’t last very long.
Single of the week this week goes to the delightful new 7” from Jackie Oates. She covers the classic Sugarcubes track “Birthday” and manages to turn it into something like some long lost English folk song from the 70’s.
Lots of new additions to our classic vinyl section this week featuring the likes of Willie Nelson, The Carter Family, Lou Reed, Jeff Buckley, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.
Kid Koala fans should check out his new psyche funk outfit The Slew with Dynomite D and members of Aussie rockers Wolfmother.
The new Channel One album is on special offer this week for only €13.99.
Another nice new Irish release featuring a collaboration between House Of Cosy Cushions and singer Katie Kim, the album comes in a lovely limited screenprinted card sleeve.
The new Girls single “Laura” is totally rocking our world here today.
Fans of Josef K [and Orange Juice] should look into the new album featuring former member Malcolm Ross, the album features his work with fellow Scottish outfit The Low Miffs.
Its not that long since the last Jason Molina album [as Magnolia Electric Co.] but the man is back with a new collection written with Centr-o-matic frontman Will Johnson. The albums on special for only €12.99 on cd and €14.99 on vinyl [vinyl comes with an mp3 download].
Fancy a bit of trippy psychedelic krautrock, then check out the limited vinyl only release from Jason Urick on the Thrill Jockey label.
The last of the Warp compilations to mark their 20th anniversary is out this week featuring eleven long lost gems from the likes of Autchre, Broadcast, Plaid and Seefeel.
Two lovely new miniature 3” cd releases from the Irish label Rusted Rail just in this week, features mini albums from Yawning Chasm and Agitated Radio Pilot. The both come in beautiful hand made card sleeves.
The recent Why album “Eskimo Snow” is now in stock on cd, sorry about the delay.
Bibio has just brought out a collection of songs to accompany his recent Ambivalence Avenue album. The album features four brand new tracks and 8 remixes from the album.
If you like your electronic music in the vein of Biosphere / Fennesz then may I draw your attention to the new album from Irish based musician Etp in collaboration with Sven Anderson. The album is called “Fluxus” and is one of nicest collections of ambient electronica we have heard in quite a while.
Former Grant Lee Buffalo frontman Grant-Lee Phillips has a brand new solo album out this week.
We have a few copies of the limited edition remix ep on Fortuna Pop from The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart now in stock.
The Adrian Crowley album “Season Of The Sparks” is back in stock at last, the album has now been reissued by the Chemikal Underground label this week.

Bibio-The apple and the tooth-This new collection from bibio on the warp label is more a companion piece to recent album ambivalence avenue than a brand new album. The album features four brand new tracks along with eight remixes of tracks from the album. The remixes are provided by clark, wax stag [aka friendly fires], eskmo, leatherette, the gentleman losers, line, keaver and brause and also one from bibio himself. The four new tracks are just the perfect accompaniment to ambivalence avenue, possibly even more electronic pop like but catchy as hell in a sultry indie folk kind of way. Try to imagine four tet but on a slighly more breezy seventies folk buzz. All we need now is a bit of sunshine to go along with this. My pick of the remixes would have to be the pure minimalism of gentleman losers. November 2009-Cd-Warp-€11.99
Candy claws-In the dream of the sea life-The debut physical release on irish label indiecater records, also home to some fantastic irish digital reissues and the mp3 hugger blog. Candy claws are an american based two piece, this is their debut full length which was originally self released on their own label. This is a truly beautiful collection of almost dreamlike mellow pop sounds, dont let the word pop put you off though, i use it in the good way. They almost remind me of the fuzzed up wall of noise of my bloody valentine and the melodic vocal harmonies of animal collective. Its a really beautifully melodic collection of layered sounds, shimmering guitars, lush synths and heaps of taped ocean sounds. I can kind of hear a bit of the intimate glitchy pop of the likes of mum from time to time too. Its a truly hypnotic and almost trance like listen seamlessly merging live instruments with lots of digital trickery, theres even some sultry hawaiian slide guitar action going on. This is one of those rare beauties that just appears every now and then out of the blue. Do yourself a favour if you like my bloody valentine, mum, cornelius, animal collective, morr music and dream pop, get yourself a copy of this one. November 2009-Cd-Indiecater records-€9.99
Flight of the concords-I told you i was freaky-The album features a selection of thirteen tracks taken from the second series of this hugely popular tv program. As you can imagine this album is all about the humorous vocal delivery and lyrics from the shows two main protagonists. The opening half of the album is pretty much dedicated to take on the sounds of modern chart based hip hop with were both in love with a sexy lady being a real highlight for me. The album comes in a limited editon cutout card sleeve, thankfully featuring a full lyric sheet inner booklet. November 2009-Cd-Sub pop-€13.99
Molina and johnson-Molina and johnson-Jason molina [songs ohia] must be one of the most prolific songwriters around at the moment, its not long since his last album as magnolia electric co and hes back with a new collaboration with will johnson from centr o matic. This is a truly stunning collection of sombre country and folk tinged sounds, beautifully rustic and downbeat. It kind of sounds like molina and johnson simply entered a room together and just played a string of songs live, its got a lovely raw live feel about. Its an album steeped in the sounds of old country and folk but this pair totally strip it down to its bare essentials with a lot of tracks just featuring guitar and piano. The two voices work so well together, both having just the right amount of that classic nashville drawl. An album that will very gently blow you away. November 2009-Cd-Secretly canadian-€12.99

On fillmore-Extended vacation-Brand new album from multi instrumentalists glen kotche [wilco] and darin gray [dazzling killmen and brise glace]. This is the same rhythm section that backed jim o rourke on albums eureka, insignificance and halfway to a threeway. The album features a very jazzy collection of laid back exotica sounds, full of slide bass, vibraphone and all manner of weird found sounds. Its almost like some long lost collection of library music or incidental music made for tv shows in the sixties. A wonderfully intrigueing listen which sees exotic jazz and nature sounds meeting to create something totally new and original. November 2009-Cd-Dead oceans-€12.99

Slew, the-100%-Brand new psyche rock influenced outfit on the ninja tunes label featuring the many talents of kid koala and dynomite d. Kid koala, as you probably already know has released several album on the ninja tunes label. Dynomite d has remixed the likes of money mark and has also worked with the beastie boys. The pair are joined by the rhythm section from australian rock band wolfmother. The album features a big funky rock selection of seventies like psyche funk sounds meets the kind of hip hop rock of the beastie boys. This may sound a bit strange but it actually kind of sounds like early zeppelin meets parliament with the addition of some very clever turntable action. November 2009-Cd-Ninja tune-€13.99
Warp 20-Unheard [various artists]-An eleven track collection of secret treasures discovered in the warp vaults. These tracks were originally only available on vinyl as part of the massive warp 20 box set, thankfully due to fan pressure the label have seen fit to release them all on one handy cd also. The album features a selection of previously unreleased or rare tracks from boards of canada, plaid, autechre, elecktroids, clark, nightmares on wax, flying lotus, broadcast and seefeel. Obvious highlights would have to be the pre incunabula track from autechre, the boards of canada track seven forty seven and their cover of the nico track sixty forty. November 2009-Cd-Warp-€13.99

Dybdahl, thomas-Thomas dybdahl-Norwegian based singer songwriter compared to the likes of nick drake and tim buckley. There are definitely plenty of nods towards that breezy seventies folk rock sound of old on this album with dybdahl bringing in plenty of country and rootsy rock influences to the mix. It actually kind of reminds me a bit of the country pop vibes of the likes of the pernice brothers with just maybe a little more of the seventies folk vibe thrown in. November 2009-Cd-Last suppa-€12.99
Etp and sven anderson-Fluxus-A truly gorgeous 50 minute piece of shimmering electronica built around alex north and jerry goldsmiths 1966 composition moon, the piece is based on a 40 second long intro to the score to whos afraid of virginia wolf. The piece features sven anderson and russell hart [scottish born and now residing in galway]. Its a wonderfully oscillating piece of mostly drone based sounds with lots of barely audible glitchy sound effects. Think of the sparse barren icy soundscapes of biosphere meets the kind of digital scratchy detritus of fennesz. Its one of those beautiful slow changing pieces that fans of the sounds of the kranky label will instantly fall in love with. Its definitely one of those rare beauties thats best appreciated on headphones, you will discover so much going on deep down in the mix this way. November 2009-Cd-Own label-€7.99

Its does take many listens to deep down within the many layers of this record before you discover a whole other world of fuzzed up krautrock, shoegazing and trance like space rock vibes. Weatherall really does seem to have taken the two worlds of techno rock and blissful shoegazing to create a sound that is truly original. Its full of euphoric synth sounds blended with some totally white noise like digital fuzz. Imagine if kraftwerk had stumbled upon early nineties rave music with kevin shields in tow. Limited edition double vinyl pressing, only 1000 copies availabel. November 2009-2lp-Atp recordings-€17.99

Ganglians-Monster head room-The woodsist labels comes up trumps yet again with this truly wonerful and joyous collection from ganglians. From the opening notes there are very obvious comparisons to the lush vocal harmonies of early beach boys albums but musically this is much more of a psychedelic pop record with plenty of nods back to the heyday of sixties garage pop. There are elements of the kind of psyche pop of animal collective but these guys also bring in hints of african guitar strumming to the mix. The album is drenched in sixties like reverb and has a lovely raw kind of analog feel about it. November 2009-Cd-Woodsist-€14.99

Black cobra-Chronomega-Black cobra were formed in 2002 by rafa martinez from acid king and jason landrian from cavity. This is their third full length album and their very first for the southern lord label. This is definitely one for fans of the sludge like metal sounds of high on fire, sleep or even a bit of the melvins. Its totally rocking sludge metal but also has a somewhat tribal like feel about it, ok i will admit it then, they remind me quite a bit of early sepultura. November 2009-Cd-Southern lord-€17.50

Carter family-Im thinking tonight of my blues eyes-This album compiles the very beginning of one of the longest lasting groups of the history of american music. Active from 1927 to 1956, the legendary carter family were originally a trio and dug deeply in the musical tradition of their southwestern virginia, bringing to light a number of gospel and folk songs that made them superstars in their day and later went on to inspire many revival groups of the sixties and seventies. November 2009-Lp-Monk-€13.99
Channel one-Sound to light-The long awaited debut album from this dublin based outfit finally hits the shelves. The album comes in a lovely three part fold out card sleeve. The album is a great big lush collection of synth heavy new wave, post rock euphoria and throbbing electronica. Its got moments of that early new wave synth sound of new order meets the layered guitars of explosions in the sky or mogwai whilst also taking in a bit of the lush ambience of sigur ros. Its the kind of album that i can see radiohead fans loving, based in experimental rock with plenty of electronic touches and plenty of passages of pure beauty. November 2009-Cd-Own label-€13.99

The ep opens up with twelve minutes of the finest droning psychedelic folk, full of low tuned vocal humming and sitar like sound effects. The second piece is another lengthy affair [just over eleven minutes] and features a sublime piece of piano minimalism underlayed with hazy droning sound effects, couldnt be more different from the opening track if it tried. The last piece is a shorter affair and features another beautifully delicate piece of modern psyche folk. November 2009-Cd-Slow loris-€4.99
Flight of the concords-I told you i was freaky-The album features a selection of thirteen tracks taken from the second series of this hugely popular tv program. Fuck buttons-Tarot sport-Fuck buttons return with a brand new andy weatherall produced album on the atp label. The album also features the mastering skills of one bob weston [shellac]. I have to say its taken me quite a while to warm to this new album, rave was never my thing so that was stumbling block number one.

Girls-Laura-Taken from their rather superb self titled album, this single is limited to only 500 copies on heavyweight 7 inch vinyl. It also features a brand new track oh boy on the flip side. The album comes in a really lovely screenprinted card sleeve. The album features a selection of haunting almost ambient like sounds, lots of swirling guitar sounds and droning synth effects. Katie kim adds her stunning voice to some of the more lush post rock like tracks, featuring some beautifully brushed drum sounds and intricate guitar picking. The album was pretty much recorded live in the studio and has a perfectly loose kind of flow to it from start to finish, it almost plays like one extended piece. November 2009-Cd-Own label-€9.99
Hurley, michael-Ida con snock-Recorded at levon helms woodstock based studios. The album features seven brand new original tracks along with five covers of classic fifties rock n roll and country tunes. Hurley is backed by new york based band ida throughout. This man has been making music as far back as the late sixties greenwich village folk scene, hard to believe he still hasnt received the kind of recognition he truly deserves. Hurley has always leaned more towards the weird side of american folk, a man with a very distinctive vocal delivery. Low miffs, the and malcolm ross-Malcolm ross and the low miffs-Young glasgow based post punk outfit the low miffs team up with underground indie pop legend malcolm ross [josef k, orange juice and aztec camera]. The album is a superbly catchy collection of jangly indie pop sounds with plenty of angular new wave and post punk hooks. For some reason the album kind of reminds me of the likes of television but on a slightly more indie pop trip, its actually not that far away from the orange juice sound either. Cleverly crafted, intricate and very catchy too. November 2009-Cd-Re action-€13.99

Os mutantes-Haih or amortcedor-The sticker on the front of the sleeve states that this is the first new studio recording in over 30 years from the band that changed everything, hard to argue with that one isnt it. This is pretty much a collaboration made in heaven for all lovers of noise and electronic distortion. Pansonic provide a truly evil backdrop for hainos random burst of devil like wordless howling. Sounding at times like a busy day in a metal fabrication shop, this really is extreme experimental noise at its very very finest. Its one of those love or hate albums, there really is no inbetween with this kind of thing. I have to say you really do get sucked in to the utter chaos going on, the anticipation of what haino is going to do next is worth it alone. November 2009-Cd-Blast first petite-€16.99

Imagine a bunch of snotty garage punkers recording for the motown label blended with a bit of late seventies post punk.
