Yet again we had some problems deciding on our album of the week, the rows have been raging all day here, so we have decided to pick two for you this week
The first album of the week award goes to the new collection from Magnolia Electric Co [aka Jason Molina / Songs Ohia] and his superb new collection "Josephine". The album is on special offer for one week at €12.99 on cd and €13.99 on vinyl [with bonus mp3 download]. The second award goes to the psychedelic opus that is "Rated O" by Oneida, we know you won't all love this but if you like heavy psychedelic stoner / space rock and extended avant rock jams then this could quite possibly be your new album of the year. Single of the week goes to Brian Cullens Love Bullets and their superb new ep "Otherwise It Will Be This Way Forever", yet again beautifully presented in a lovely card sleeve with foldout poster. Basically any band that names themselves after a Dublin footballer will always win us over. The Dead Weather album featuring Jack White [White Stripes / Raconteurs] and Alison Mosshart [Kills] is now in stock, should have some vinyl copies for you by next week. Two beautiful new releases out this week on the Rusted Rail label, a really cool label based here in Ireland specialising in lovely handmade miniature cd releases. They have two new mini albums out this week from CWK Joynes and Dovetail Consort, all copies are limited. These are the kind of things that make working in a record store so exciting, the love and effort that goes into packaging these items just makes you want to own them. The Marc Carroll album is now in stock on vinyl, the cd came in last week. The new Florence And The Machine album is now in stock on cd and limited edition vinyl. We have some nice printed media for you this week, not something we normally do but these two titles really caught our attention. Drag City have issued a rather lovely 88 page fanzine "Galactic Zoo Dossier" which also comes with a bunch of limited edtion trading cards and a superb 22 track bonus cd. Domino Records and book publishers Faber have teamed up for a quality new collection of music writing, this rather gorgeous 225 page book features a host of lenghty essays from musicians and journalists, this is the first issue of many and its called "Loops". Jonsi from Sigur Ros has a brand new side project out this week called "Riceboy Sleeps" featuring a very lovely collection of dreamy ambient sounds. One of my all time favourite soul albums "Hot Buttered Soul" by Isaac Hayes has just been reissued / remastered with bonus tracks and its now in stock and on special for only €10.99. The new album from We Fell To Earth is well worth your attention, its a new project featuring Unkle member Richard File and vocalist Wendy Rae Fowler [Queens Of The Stoneage / Mark Lanegan Band]. Lovers of modern classical sounds will simply adore the new collection from Peter Broderick out this week. Lots of quality new vinyl reissues out this week with our personal highlights featuring The Beastie Boys "Ill Communication", Moondog's "More Moondog", Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" and The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds".

The album is simply overflowing with pure energy and some of the most infectiously catchy sleazy pop you will hear all year. This new version now comes with a bonus 7 track cd featuring tracks previously only available on vinyl and download. Lord cut glass-Lord cut glass-The debut solo album from the former delgados frontman alun woodward. Its a big expansive collection of sounds with tons of strings and brass sounds accompanying woodward along the way on this dramtic collection of sometimes folk tinged songs. Its an album that sometimes hints at the old brass sounds of old time mining bands whilst also incorporating some lovely mellow acoustic indie folk and just the odd moment reminscent of his own band the delgados. The backing band even features the vocals of former delgados singer emma pollock. Its a challenging and highly rewarding listen, five years in the making and you can see why too. The first part the experimental preteen weaponry came out last year on the jag jaguwar label also. This album is a veritable trip through the many different forms of psyche and space rock with so many twists and turns along the way its hard to keep up. The album rather strangely opens up with a slice of pounding scuzzed up techno coming across like the bug with fuzzed up guitars. The following few tracks are simply some of the most sublime kind of stoner psyche rock you are likely to hear all year, dare i say sounding like early hawkwind on even stronger drugs. Its full of pounding almost tribal like drum sounds, scuzzy analog synths and totally fuzzed to the max guitars. Thats just the first of 3 cds now. The second cd is much more straight ahead pounding krautrock like influenced psychedelic rock with more emphasis on the guitar led side of things with lots of heavy stoner rock tangents. The last of the three cds features some truly epic psychedelic rock sounds packed with hypnotic wailing guitars doing battle with squelchy analog synths. This truly is one hell of a mind blowing aural experience, maybe not to everybodys taste but if you want to head off on a totally psychedelic noise experience for an hour or two then you wont find better than oneida for meeting your needs. Penate, jack-Everything is new-Jack penate returns with his second album on the xl label. Recorded over the space of a year with producer paul epworth in his home studios in london. This is very much a different beast compared to his first collection with this album incorporating lots more electronc beats and even a nod towards pure pop sounds. The album features hints of everything from sunshine reggae pop to balearic rhythms to pure breezy electro pop. June 2009-Cd-Xl-€15.99
Scattergood, polly-Polly scattergood-The debut album from this young singer songwriter on the mute label. The album features ten perfect slices of quirky alt pop and indie rock sounds falling somewhere between kate bush, pj harvey and tori amos. Scattergood veers away from the generic singer songwriter sound with the addition of lots of pulsating electronic beats, lush synths and anger fuelled indie rock. Its an album that truly runs the gamut of emotions featuring brittle ballads and totally rocking post punk sounds. July 2009-Cd-Mute-€11.99
Science fiction dance party-Science fiction dance party-Finders keepers unearth another weird exotica gem from the past and follow up their recent vampires of dartmoor with another gem from the same german crew. Made by german electronic composers horst ackerman and heribert thusek this album was the follow up to their fictitious soundtrack the vampires of dartmoor. The album was originally released way back in 1971 and rapidly disappeared into obscurity until the fine folk at finders keepers got hold of it. The original has now been reissued with an additional four extra bonus tracks. Its pure keyboard led seventies exotica with lots of bonkers film dialog thrown in. Imagine the bbc radiophonic workshop making fairground music with hints of seventies krautrock and cheesy exotica added into the mix. If you are a fan of the finders keepers label then this will sound perfectly normal to you, if not then be prepared for a truly crazy psychedelic trip. July 2009-Cd-Finders keepers-€13.99

Duckworth lewis method-The duckworth lewis method [featuring neil hannon from divine comedy and thomas walsh from pugwash]-A brand new collaborative project from two of our finest irish songwriters around at the moment. The tracks were all written by neil hannon from divine comedy and thomas walsh from pugwash. The album features a collection of tracks dedicated to the world of cricket. Hannon and walsh are joined on the recording by cathy cavey, phil jupitus, alesander armstrong and matt berry. So what could divine comedy and pugwash sound like jamming together. The answer to that is exactly as you would imagine. The album has tons of that beatles like sunshine pop that pugwash do so so well blended with the kind of dramatic chamber pop of mr neil hannon. An album of beatiful acoustic pop songs and laid back piano led ballads even incorporating hints of summer time reggae just for that added bit of sunshine. There are plenty of that hannon speciality with piano led almost vaudeville like tunes especially on the utterly addictive track jiggery pokery. Its pretty much a match made in heaven for lovers of top quality intelligent pop music. And the answer is no, you dont need to know anything about cricket to appreciate it. Akron family-Set em wild set em free [with bonus mp3 code]-Akron family return with a brand new album on the dead oceans label. Now stripped down to a core three piece with the departure of regular member ryan vanderhoof. On first listen this is by far their most accessable album to date with the album taking on a somewhat country tinged americana vibe for the first few tracks. There is still plenty of their trademark rambling psyche folk in here along with a couple of truly explosive psyche rock moments building up into some superbly crazed avant garde southern rock meets pure white noise. What i love about these guys is that you simply cannot predict what is coming next as tracks can go from gentle acoustic guitar picking to full on wall of sound noise at the drop of a hat. Beastie boys-Ill communication [180 gram remastered edition]-A classic beastie boys album from back in 1994 now fully remastered and reissued on two slabs of heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Comes in the original gatefold sleeve too. Features twenty slices of pure genre hopping brilliance and still sounds as fresh as ever. Features the likes of sure shot, sabotage, root down, get it together featuring q tip from a tribe called quest, flute loop, b boys making with the freak freak and many many more. Black sabbath-Black sabbath [180 gram vinyl reissue]-Reissued on limited edition double vinyl. Comes pressed on two slabs of 180 gram vinyl. Features the original gatefold sleeve and printed inners. The album that started it all off. The debut sabbath album from way back in 1970. Its still one of sabbaths finest recordings. Features black sabbath, the wizard, behind the wall of sleep, nib, evil woman, sleeping village and the warning. Some say this was the birth of heavy metal and who am i to argue. A powerful and evil classic. The album now also with nine bonus tracks not featured on the original version. The bonus material features studio outtakes, alternate versions and instrumentals. Boduf songs-The strait gait [latitudes series]-Released as part of the ongoing latitudes series run by the southern label. The two long tracks included here were recorded in the space of just one day in the southern studios back in november 2007. The first track is a big evil piece of bass heavy drone with lots of swirling cymbal effects calling to mind sunn 0 making music for some cult seventies horror movie. The second piece is a much more familiar boduf songs track which sees mainman matt sweet head back to a more acoustic based psyche folk sound. Limited edition vinyl pressing, only 1000 copies available worldwide. July 2009-Lp-Southern-€15.99
Brian cullens love bullets-Otherwise it will be this way forever-The third ep from a band fast becomming one of our favourites on the local scene at the moment. As ever the ep is superbly packaged, these guys always put such love and effort into their releases. The ep comes in a lovely card sleeve with a foldout poster inner sleeve. Along with the title track the ep also features six fifteen one eight oh eight, killing for company and its pretty much over already which also appeared on our road records sampler cd for record store day. This dublin based three piece have an overall sound with really reminds us of some of those classic early factory records with a production quality that a certain mr martin hannett would be proud to call his own. There is a certain new wave feel about it with moments harking back to both joy division and very early new order. Dark hearted indie rock at its very very finest. Broderick, peter-Music for falling from trees [with bonus digital compilation erased tapes collection 1]-A collection of truly beautiful modern classical sounds from peter broderick on the erased tapes label. The album features 30 minutes of music specially commissioned by the london based choreographer adrienne hart from neon productions. This is a collection of string and piano based sounds that is sure to excite fans of everything from the rachels to johan johannsson. Carroll, marc-The dust of rumour [limited to 1000]-Irish born singer songwriter marc carroll returns with a brand new solo album on the high noon recordings label. Marc was previously a member of irish alt rock outfit puppy love bomb. The album features a rather catchy blend of rootsy rock sounds, sixties guitar pop and jangly indie rock. There are hints of the likes of teenage fanclub or the byrds from time to time along with some lovely intimate electric folk pop coming on like a more underground bob dylan. Cohen, leonard-Live songs-Recorded in various venues between 1970 and 1972. The album was originally released on the columbia label in 1973. The album now comes reissued on 180 gram vinyl with all the original artwork. The album features live versions of minute prologue, passing through, you know who i am, bird on a wire, nancy, improvisation, story of isaac, please dont pass me by, tonight will be fine and queen victoria.-Lp-Sundazed-€18.99
Dead weather-Horehound-Brand new project featuring jack with from the white stripes, alison mossheart from the kills, dean fertita from queens of the stoneage and jack lawrence from the raconteurs. The album features a totally sleazy collection of fuzzed up blues like jams and garage rock vibes. Mosshart handles pretty much all the vocals, coming on like some bluesy take on pj harvey. White is back behind the drumkit again on most of this so the guitars are handled mainly by fertita giving the album a somewhat stoner rock bluesy vibe with plenty of added sixties dirge like sleaze. Doris-The working title-The debut full length album from this irish based alt rock four piece. The album features their two singles stop and will i ever learn. Features lots of melodic alt rock sounds with plenty of big catchy choruses. July 2009-Cd-Own label-€9.99
Dovetail consort-East and west ep-Bristol based solo artist tim newman releases this very beautiful collection of guitar instrumentals on the superb irish based rusted rail label. The six track mini album is pressed on a very cute little 3 inch sized cd and comes housed in a beautiful handmade miniature card sleeve. I dont need to warn you how limited these are so its first come first served with these. The album features 20 minutes of haunting guitar instrumental sounds calling to mind the likes of james blackshaw with some added strings. The material has now been beautifully restored and remastered at the legendary abbey road studios by andy walter for this reissue on the honest jons label. Its full of pounding almost tribal like drum sounds, scuzzy analog synths and totally fuzzed to the max guitars. Thats just the first of 3 cds now. Tidwell, cortney-Boys-Nashville based songwriter cortney tidwell returns with her second full length album and her first for the city slang label. The album features a really lovely blend of slightly country tinged folky sounds and mellow electronic beats. There are moments of mazzy star like ambience along with the slighly kooky singer songwriter style of early cat power but tidwell stands out a bit more with her use of keyboards and electronic effects. Deep in the mix you can hear the influence of some early country vibes complete with slide guitar. Its a great big melting pot of sounds fronted by one of the most beautiful voices around at the moment. The album also features a guest spot by jim james from my morning jacket. We fell to earth-We fell to earth-We fell to earth are richard file from unkle and wendy rae fowler, who guests with queens of the stoneage and mark lenegan. The album features a beautifully haunting collection of almost gothic tinged electronic post rock sounds with everything from pulsating krautrock to mellow seventies psyche rock. Its an album that kind of reminds me at times of portishead with added guitars. Its full of post rock like guitar moments blended with some beautifully ambient beats and electronic touches. Its also got a lovely kind of darkly ambient krautrock feel about with lots of hypnotic looped beats and throbbing bass sounds. Richard file possesses a voice that reminds me of mark hollis from talk talk, and no bad thing that is, whilst wendy raw folwer sounds like a more soulful beth gibbons. Its an album that manages to be both intimate and hugely expansive at the same time. This is a real joy from start to finish. July 2009-Cd-In stereo-€16.99

The album features a total of 13 classic recordings featuring a host of old tunes made specially for this collection. A damn fine insight into the rather explosive sounds of a big band ceila band. Lambert, alan-Anam [signed and numbered]-Very very limited edition release from this irish based electronic artist on the farpoint recordings label. All copies are signed by the artist and are also hand numbered in an edition of only 100 copies in total. Comes in a foldout paper sleeve. The album features just one perfect 25 minute piece recorded in 1994. Joining lambert are breda mayock on violin, emer mayock on flute, rory stephens on glockenspiel and mark o sullivan on clarinet. Its a rather beautiful piece of music which sees the seamless blending of classical sounds and modern electronica. Recorded onto 8 track tape for a beautiful warm organic kind of sound. The album comes with a superb full colour booklet with lots of interesting liner notes and some really amazing old photos. The album opens up with some perfectly ramshackle lo fi indie rock ala pavement or sebadoh before settling into a much more laid back indie folk mood. Sounding at times like some bedroom folky take on gradaddy meets early elliott smith the album will tick all the right boxes for all you lovers of lo fi indie sounds. Its got that lovely laid back loose kind of sound that will most definitely appeal to early yo la tengo fans with just a hint at the weirder side of psyche folk. He doesnt try to dress up these classic songs or change them in any way. He tends to concentrate more on the mellow side of nelsons songwriting and the album has a lovely kind of woozy late night feel about most of it. Swan lake-Enemy mine-Swan lake features dan bejar from destroyer and the new porngraphers, spencer krug from wolf parade and casey mercer from frog eyes. This is their second album on the jag jaguwar label. Its an album of fuzzy alt rock sounds with bits of everything from early roots rock sounds to rustic folk and hints of tom waits like dirges. To be honest you can actually hear the influence of all their regular bands in here with a bit of everything going on from piano leds ballads to pure fuzzed up indie rock. The album kind of fits snuggly between the early post rock sounds of the first two albums and the more electronic based funked up sounds of tnt. Its an album bristling with funky krautrock vibes and even sees tortoise dipping their toes into the wobbly bass world of dubstep on a couple of tracks. Its one of the more uptempo beat driven tortoise albums in quite a while with john mecntire providing the backbone of funky jazz like live drums. A couple of tracks even strike as some modern take on the early seventies funk sound with lots of chunky organ sounds making an appearence. Theres even a morricone like slide guitar led tune. The second disc features the bambu album which remained unfinished after wilsons death. The bambu album has now been fully mixed and remastered and is now officially released for the very first time.
