Road Records new releases February 4th 2010

Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

Another week and another list of awesome new albums, I have to keep reminding myself its only just the first week of February, it really has been quite an amazing start to the year.

This week is so good I am going to list my highlights in alphabetical order to make life easier [for me more than anything]
The Album Leaf are back with a new album on the Sub Pop label, this is the first one to feature a full band in the studio, the cd is only €13.99 this week. We should have some vinyl copies for you early next week.
Our Irish album of the month for February goes to the wonderful new collection from At Last An Atlas [full review down below]. The album comes with a lovely hand printed bonus disc featuring exclusive versions of tracks from his previous album. The album is only €9.99 at the moment but quantities are limited.
Besnard Lakes are back with a new 12” ep sampler from their forthcoming new album, it’s a vinyl only release but does comes with a free mp3 download coupon.
I have to say we are really loving the new Citay album, well we are suckers for dual guitar solo rock action, I speak for the older members of staff when I say that.
Clipd Breaks is a fine collection of totally blissful psyche rock / space rock, I reckon fans of Oneida will really go for this one.
King Khan & The BBQ Show are back with a new album, it came out very late last year and for some reason totally passed us by at the time, thankfully we have rectified that now.
Our single of the week this week is Lonelady, catchy indie rock, another thing we love around here.
Magnetic Fields are back with their “Folk” album, a very different record to the previous album “Distortion”.
Fans of ambient drone like electronic sounds will be in heaven when they hear the new Bj Nilsen album on the Touch label, a label that never fails to deliver high quality music.
Thanks to a regular customer we have just been introduced to an awesome new label called Analog Africa and we have a couple of releases from them just in this week. So far we have managed to source a few albums from Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou, we will have much more from the label in the coming weeks but suffice to say this is some of the finest African soul music we have heard in years.
The new Pantha Du Prince album is getting a lot of plays here in the shop at the moment, its his first for the Rough Trade label and we just love it.
Our album of the week this week goes to the new collection from Gil Scott-Heron, the man is a living legend and has come up with a really beautiful new collection. The vinyl is going to be very very limited to get your requests in as quick as you can.
The White Hills album from last week is now in stock on cd, comes in a totally different sleeve to the vinyl with a couple of different tracks too.
Its time for a list of our vinyl albums that come with mp3 / free cds – Olafur Arnalds, Besnard Lakes, Clipd Beaks, Infinite Body and Pop Ambient. We say well done to all the labels that do it now and boo to the labels that don’t.

That’s it from me for another week, have a good weekend and see you next week sometime.

Scott-heron, gil-Im new here-The legendary gil scott-heron returns with his first new full length album in thirteen years. Assisted by producer and head honcho of xl recordings richard russell. Scott-heron is probably most famous for his truly legendary track the revolution will not be televised. The album features a total of fifteen tracks spread over 28 minutes, some almost pure spoken word with the barest of background music. The album features several covers including im new here by smog, me and the devil by robert johnson and ill take care of you by bobby bland. Its a beautifully soulful collection of sounds, actually reminds me a little of the massive attack tracks that featured horace andy in the past, gently funky but simply allowing to voice to carry each song. The production it must be said is just beautiful, its all very understated with gentle beats, strings and lush synths going about their business in the background. This album though, is all about this mans truly amazing voice, deep and menacing at tmes, heartfelt and soulful on others. Its a real joy and at only 28 minutes you will just keep hitting the repeat button for more, never has less is more been true. The album comes pressed on two slabs of 180 gram vinyl and is limited to only 1250 copies. Comes in a superheavyweight card gatefold sleeve. The second piece of vinyl features bonus tracks not featured on the cd, these are old gems and a few previously unreleased tracks. February 2010-2lp-Xl-€25.99

At last an atlas-From which we were raised [with limited bonus cd]-The debut full length release on the slow loris label from dublin based artist at last an atlas. Its pretty much a one man band centred around hollows member greg o brien, with just a little help from some friends. Greg previoulsy released a limited edition split mini album on the slow loris with singer songwriter paul o reilly. This is a truly beautiful collection of intimate downbeat electronic folk like sounds, lots of gentle throbbing beats, lush synth sounds and hushed vocal tones. For some reason his material always reminds of a more stripped down grandaddy, like some late night take on their sound with a bit of elliott smith blended in. Its a beautiful dreamlike collection of intimate electronic pop sounds, it almost reminds me of the kind of thing that you would expect to hear from the morr music label, you know that kind of gentle late night pop sound they specialise in. Gently pulsating electronic folk pop at its very very finest. Comes with a limited edition free four track bonus cd. Only the first 100 copies will come with a bonus cd so get your orders in quick. The bonus cd comes in a handmade screen printed sleeve and features four exclusive tracks recorded specially for this release. The releases on this label are always a thing of real personal beauty, those still trying to track down the awesome wagtail original sleeve will testify to that. Dont say you havent been warned this time. February 2010-2cd-Slow loris-€9.99

Pallett, owen [final fantasy]-Heartland-The artist formerly known as final fantasy returns with his third solo outing to date, he is now recording under his own name due to some stupid legal case taken against him for using the final fantasy name. His first album came out way back in 2005 [has a good home] and was followed by the exceptional second album he poos clouds in 2006. It may be nearly four years since his last album but its fair to say pallett has been busy with other projects in the meantime. Along with touring as a one man band pallett has also provided string arrangements for several bands including grizzly bear, arcade fire, beirut, last shadow puppets and mountain goats. This is his first album to be released on the domino label. This is an album of true orchestral beauty, probably one of the most lush collections your are likely to hear all year round. Known for his superb violin playing this album features what sounds to my ears like a full blown orchestra at times, full of dramatic string and horn bursts. Its an album the flows seamlessy through many genres with such each too. Sometimes you think you could be listening to some modern take on steve reich or phillip glass and before you know it things turn into some kind of indie broadway musical [ala sufjan stevens maybe]. Its highly intricate and joyously catchy at the same time, full of layered string sounds and palletts gentle almost hushed vocal delivery. Its one of those rare albums that comes up with something new each time you listen to it, sometimes classical pop and sometimes just pure classic quirky indie pop. Its got to be said this is something truly original. January 2010-Cd-Domino-€11.99

Album leaf-A chorus of storytellers-Brand new album from jimmy lavelle [and full band] recorded last year at bear creek studios in seattle by ryan hadlock. The album was then mixed by birgir jon birgisson of sigur ros in iceland. It is also his first album to be recorded with a full band in tow featuring drew andrews, matt resovich, tim reece and luis hermosillo. Its definitely an album that benifits from having the full band in the studio, it very much broadens the scope of sound, adding to his trademark gentle electronic pop sounds. Its still an album of beautifully mellow electronic based pop / folk sounds with lots of added strings and brass. I can also see what attracted birgisson of sigur ros to the album, it does have a similar kind of floaty ambience to it, full of gentle dreamlike passages. The album also features some truly lovely post rock like guitar intricacy, gently meandering around lavelles hushed vocal sounds. A subdued but rather uplifting album, probably his finest of them all so far. Comes in a lovely card gatefold sleeve. February 2010-Cd-Sub pop-€13.99

Citay-Dream get together [comes with bonus digital download coupon]-San francisco based outfit return with their third album, once again produced by tim green [fucking champs]. The band are joined on this one by merrill garbus [tune yards] and josh robinow [howlin rain] with tim green also providing guitars throughout. Its an album of pure seventies like rock sounds full of psychedelic and blues rock influences. Featuring hints of pink floyd, thin lizzy, zeppelin, popul vuh, elo and early seventies metal. If you dont like extended dual guitar solo action then you should look away now as this is just wall to wall full of them, going from drug fuelled psyche rock to pure blues tinged early metal. If, on the other hand you love dual guitar solo action then you will be in total heaven with this album, there are not enough bands doing this kind of thing anymore so thank you citay for satisfying our needs. The album comes packaged with a digital download coupon featuring all tracks from the album too. January 2010-Lp-Dead oceans-€12.99

Clipd beaks-To realize-Album number three from this oakland based psyche rock tinged outfit. This is an album of totally trippy and blissed out psyche rock sounds, like some modern take on early seventies psyche rock meets krautrock minimalism. Dare i say there are even moments that remind me of the mighty oneida, just in the way they have taken lots of influences from different seventies psyche / space rock and totally modernized them. Its totally trippy stuff with plenty of the more noise rock like moments remiinding of sonic youth, drenched in oodles of reverb. February 2010-Cd-Lovepump-€13.99

Try to imagine a much more stoner rock like take on hawkwind. Its full of lenghty blistering guitar workouts, fuzzed up synthy space rock like sounds and kyuss like stoner rock dirges. These guys are quite possibly one of the finest stoner / psyche rock bands on the planet at this moment in time, no exaggeration. February 2010-Cd-Thrill jockey-€12.99

This 12 inch on the warp label is limited to only 250 copies. Features popcommon, screwby, combed, care, tummy sticks, celebrate and shaved.

Erland and the carnival-Erland and the carnival-The debut album from erland and the carnival on the full time hobby label. Features simon tong [the good the band and the queen, verve] and david nock. The album features a collection of folk and folk rock sounds overflowing with psychedelic rock and folk influences. Its almost like the meeting of the likes of pentangle and love with a hint of the 13th floor elevators. There are moments that kind of remind me of the psychedelic meanderings of the likes of the coral but these guys have a lot more of a folky vibe going on throughout. Its insanely catchy at times, full of english folk rock pomp but incredibly enjoyable throughout. January 2010-Cd-Full time hobby-€11.99

Recorded in various locations including a basement in dublin and railroad studios in norway. The ep features some lovely floaty folk pop like sounds, think fleet foxes meets low anthem for starters. January 2010-Cd-Gb recordings-€4.99

Infinite body-Carve out the face of my god-Infinite body is kyle parker, once known as gator surprise. He has recently toured with the likes of no age, dan deacon and deerhunter. I have to admit i really wasnt expecting a collection of swirling dreamlike ambience with this record, full of shimmering shoegazing like influences blended with lots of seventies like synthy vibes. Its both harsh and beautifully lush sounding at the same time, featuring sounds drenched in so much reverb that there is probably still an echo hovering around the studio it was recorded in. Its the kind of thing that kranky fans will adore straight away, as will fans of avant garde space rock and synth based early krautrock minimalism. February 2010-Cd-Post present music-€13.99

Features a full digital download coupon and free foldout poster inside the sleeve. Februar 2010-Lp-Post present music-€13.99

King khan and the bbq show-Invisible girl-The long awaited third album from king khan and the bbq show. King khan and the bbq show is basically just a two man garage rock outfit featuring king khan [obviously] and mark sultan [spaceshits and les sexareenos]. Its fair to say this man also comes up with the goods, if high quality garage rock is your thing, and this piece of lo fi fuzz up goodness is no exception. King khan blends up sixties garage rock, doo-wop and the kind of fuzzed up pop of early velvet underground. Its about as infectiously catchy as garage rock can get, the dual vocal doo-wop thing going on really gives this a totally original kind of feel. Recorded in such a way that you could easily think you have stumbled upon some long lost gem from the late sixties, lo fi garage rock at its very best. 2009-Cd-In the red-€15.99

Lonelady-Intuition-The second single from julie campbell on the warp label, she also released one previous single as part of the too pure limited edition singles club in the past. The track is taken from her debut album nerve up and is backed by a cover of the fall track hotel bloedel [not featured on the album]. The single is limited to only 250 copies. Its a superb slice of no wave meets almost funky like indie rock. Imagine blondie jamming with talking heads in a totally indie rock like fashion. Its infectiously catchy stuff with lots of choppy and angular new wave like guitar sounds. February 2010-7"-Warp-€4.99

Magnetic fields-Realism-Stephen merritt returns with his first album since the reverb drenched distortion album, a real homage to all things shoegazing from 2008. This is his third album so far for the nonesuch label and a sound that draws its inspiration from the orchestrated sounds of sixties / seventies british folk and psychedelia. Its fair to say if you played realism and distortion to somebody unfamiliar with magnetic fields they would have to assume they were two different bands, that how much things have changed since the last record. The album was recorded almost entirely acoustically, featuring pretty much no drums from start to finish. Upon reading the liner notes i noticed they state no synths were used, instead they have been replaced by all manner of classical strings, woodwind and accordian. Having done the shoegazing thing it would be fair to say this is his first truly all folk album. I love the fact that you just cant predict what this man will come up with from album to album. Nilsen, bj-The invisible city-At last bj nilsen returns with the long awaited follow up to the short night from way back in 2007 [also on the ever reliable touch label]. This new collection carries on the beautifully minimal themes of the previous album with most of the basic recordings made using the subharchord synthesizer [one of the earliest synthesizers ever build]. Nilsen then uses these droning sound effects as a base to layer all manner of found sounds and field recordings over. The end result being a haunting and somewhat evil souding collection of drone based songs full of glitchy sound effects and oscillating drones. Its minimal electronica with such layered detail that several listens are required to truly hear everything that is going in deep in the mix. Its one of those gems that touch do so very very well.

Skelton, richard-Landings-Brand new album from multi instrumentalist richard skelton, he also records under the names a broken consort, riftmusic, carousell and clouwbeck. The album features some truly beautiful / abstract string based ambient sounds. Based around slowly strummed guitars and drone like violin sounds, skelton then merges all manner of found sounds and organ like effects into the mix. The end result is an ever pulsating collection of swirling oscillating sounds, both ambient and drone like at the same time. Not quite as glitchy as fennesz or as dubby as biosphere but similar in atmosphere to both, its definitely a headphone album to really get the full effect of some of the sounds hidden way down in the mix. Hauntingly beautiful stuff and something that fans of the type label will just adore from start to finish. February 2010-Cd-Type-€17.99

Soft pack-The soft pack-The debut album from this san diego based garage rock outfit formerly known as the muslims. The album features ten short sharp blasts of old school garage rock meets the early punk rock sounds of the seventies. Its full of fuzzed up and extremely catchy punk pop sounds, imagine the modern lovers fronted by iggy pop on a slighly more sixties garage pop like trip. I have to admit i am totally loving this album at the moment, its full of sunshine tinged garage rock and thats always good in my world. Its the kind of album i would imagine billy childish would have made had he been born near a beach in california. Clocking in at just over 32 minutes you just want to keep hitting the repeat button after each listen. January 2010-Lp-Heavenly recordings-€22.99

Vibracathedral orchestra-Joka boya-Part of a trio of limited edition vinyl only releases from vibracathedral orchestra on the vhf label. The band for these releases features longtime stalwarts mick flower and adam davenport with frequent collaborators john godbert [total] and john moloney [sunburned hand of the man]. Six track album featuring a collection of guitar led psychedelic rock workouts, full of meandering folk like vibes. There is less of an eastern influence going on here compared to the smoke song album [also released this week] with this one heading off into a much more murky avant rock kind of psychedelic trip, think of the no neck blues band with more fuzzed up guitars. February 2010-Lp-Vhf-€18.99

Vibracathedral orchestra-Smoke song-Part of a trio of limited edition vinyl only releases from vibracathedral orchestra on the vhf label. The band for these releases features longtime stalwarts mick flower and adam davenport with frequent collaborators john godbert [total] and john moloney [sunburned hand of the man]. You never really know what to expect with these guys so releasing three albums at the same time is definitely going to throw up a few surprises. The first track takes up almost all of side one and sounds like some crazed psyche folk take on traditional indian folk music, full of droning sitar like vibes and hand held drums. It really is beautifully hypnotic, played at breakneck speed and featuring just a hint of an oriental influence. Dare i say it sounds like robbie basho jamming with ravi shankar. The second side features just one track which kind of carries on the indian / middle eastern them but in a much more psyche folk like manner, if anything its even faster than the first side and features lots of amazing drone like sound effects behind the hypnotic string sounds. Pure heaven for avant garde folk lovers. February 2010-Lp-Vhf-€18.99

We are only riders-The jeffrey lee pierce sessions project-A stellar cast of musicians interpret and in some cases complet unfinished works by the late great frontman with seminal outfit the gun club. Limited edition vinyl pressing. Comes on 180 gram vinyl in a gatefold sleeve. January 2010-2lp-Glitterhouse-€27.99

White hills-White hills-Brand new album from psychedelic rock specialists on the thrill jockey label. The album was recorded over the course of three days and features kid millions from oneida on drums. This cd version has three exclusive tracks not featured on the vinyl release and comes in a miniature lp style sleeve. The album features dead, counting sevens, three quarters, let the right one in, we will rise, glacial and polvere di stelle. The album also comes with completely different artwork to the vinyl version. The album is a truly awesome collection of stoner rock meets pure blissed out space rock.

Album leaf-A chorus of storytellers [this album is released on the 12th of february]-Brand new album from jimmy lavelle [and full band] recorded last year at bear creek studios in seattle by ryan hadlock. A subdued but rather uplifting album, probably his finest of them all so far.-Lp-Sub pop-€13.99

Retribution gospel choir-2 [released on the 5th of february]-Album number from this rock outfit fronted by alan sparhawk [guitarist / singer with low]. Its the follow up to their self titled debut which came out in 2008 and thieir first for the sub pop label. The band features sparhawk on vocals / guitars, steve garrington on bass and eric pollard on drums. The album was recorded by eric swanson at sacred heart studios in minnesota. This is very much an album that sees sparhawk let loose with the kind of rock based guitar action the really wouldnt work on any of the recordings with low. This is back to basics guitar based rock music, falling somewhere between the slow core sounds of the likes of the red house painters and some of neil youngs crazy horse vibes. Ive got to admit it great to hear this guy let loose with his guitar on this album, its full of fuzzed up distorted sounds and plenty of heavy riff action.-Cd-Sub pop-€12.99

Along with helping on production saunier also plays on much of the record as does ches smith [john zorn, terry riley and marc ribot] who provides timpani, conga and moog. John dieterich from deerhoof also joins in on the traditional folk song cumberland gap. The band are even joined by the immaculata catholic school orchestra on stewarts ode the heartbreak and healing [this too shall pass away].-Lp-Kill rock stars-€13.99

Animal collective-Fall be kind [with digital download coupon]-Brand new five track mini album from the ever brilliant animal collective, none of these tracks have appeared anywhere before. The album features graze, what would i want? Sky, bleed, on a highway and i think i can. According to the press release with the album the real coup for this collection is the first ever officially cleared grateful dead sample to be used on a record, now theres a fact im sure you didnt know. The album sees the band go back just a little to their more experimental early days, full of shimmering psychedelia. I think this is the first album in my record collection to feature panpipes [the first i will openly admit to anyway]. These guys must be one of the few bands that can make totally experimental psychedelia that manages to be infectiously catchy at the same time, as ever weird but truly wonderful too. One and a half amazing albums in one year, not many bands you can say that about. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl and comes with free digital download coupon featuring all tracks. December 2009-Lp-Domino-€9.99

Arctic monkeys-Humbug [180 gram vinyl with bonus mp3 download]-The arctic monkeys return with their third album on the domino label. The album was produced by josh homme from queens of the stoneage in the mojave desert and also by james ford in his brooklyn studios. Within seconds of the album opener you can hear the influence of josh homme as he obviously yanked up the guitars in order to make a more rockin album with them. There is definitely a slight shift from the more angular post punk of the first two albums to this one which seems to feature a lot more heavy guitar riff action. Its still very much an arctic monkeys album though, with alex turner still writing some damn fine lyrics, as good as anything thats preceeded. The big addition, for me anyway, is the extra fuzzed up guitar action turning their sound into some great big rumbling rock'n'roll post punk machine. Its still full of angular stop start moments that made the first two albums stand out so much from other bands in this genre and top marks must go to the arctic monkeys for trying something a bit different with their third album, universally known as the difficult third album, though these lads dont seem to have encountered any problems in the quality control stakes. Fans of the first two albums will take a few listens to truly appreciate this one, but its well worth the work and lets be honest most good albums take a bit of time to really sink in properly. Having now made three great albums it pretty obvious these guys are here to stay for quite a while. Pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl and comes in a gatefold sleeve which also features a bonus mp3 download coupon. August 2009-Lp-Domino-€16.99

Behan, jimmy-The echo garden-The return of this irish based electronic artists and the long overdue follow up to his debut from 2004. If we had a chart of top irish albums by ex members of staff here in road records then mr behan would be number one this week. Jimmy behan has written, produced and recorded absolutely everything on this album and its a truly meticulous piece of electronic composition. Its hard to get to get beyond comparisons to the likes of fennesz and biosphere so lets just say that fans of either of those artists will absolutely adore this album. Its full of glitchy but warm sounding electronic soundscapes with lots of lovely watery like effects and delicate organ sounds. Its very much an album that really comes to life on headphones where you can truly get a feeling for the intricate details and mass of layered sounds deep in the mix. A real treat and a must for fans of the sounds of labels like touch. June 2009-Cd-Audiobulb records-€11.99

Bell x1-Flock-Album number 3 from dublin based outfit bell x1 and the follow up the music in mouth, features the single bigger than me and 10 other new tracks, tracklisting is reacharound, flame, rocky took a lover, he said she said, bad skin day, natalie, bigger than me, just like mr benn, my first born for a song, trampoline and lamposts, october 2005-Cd-Island-€10.99

Benson, brendan-My old familiar friend-Brendan benson takes some time out from the ranconteurs to release his fourth solo album. The album features another fine collection of guitar based alt rock / pop sounds with lots of his trademark almost retro like rootsy rock influences. At times benson delves into the psychedelic world of sixties pop sounds coming on like some jangly pop take on the byrds crossed with the beatles. Its got to be said this man really does know how to write an infectiously catchy rock song, the album is packed with catchy hooks and memorable singalong choruses. August 2009-Cd-V2-€15.99

Boxcutter-Glyphic-Northern irish born electronic producer barry lynn returns with his second album for the planet mu label, whilst this guy is thrown in with the new dubstep sound there is much more of an atmospheric almost ambient feel about his brand of dubstep which at times is comparable with the mighty burial, this guy has taken dubsteps basic elements and slowed it all down, there are also plenty of elements of the more harsh brittle sounds of early aphex twin and even autechre in here as beats slowly morph from subdued dubstep into a more laid back take on breakcore, november 2007-2lp-Planet mu-€17.99
Broadcast and the focus group-Broadcast and the focus group investigate witch cults of the radio age-Broadcast return with a unique psychedelic collaborative mini album with renowned graphic and musical artist julian house [aka the focus group]. Julian house is also one of the co founders of the ghost box label. The album features a total of 23 short pieces of beautifully abstract electronica, try to imagine a more psychedelic sounding radiophonic workshop with elements of early english psyche folk. Its almost sounds like a soundtrack to some trippy seventies english sci fi movie. Its full of old analog synth sounds, haunting vocals and all manner of weird studio sound effects. 2009-Cd-Warp-€10.99

Cope, julian-Fried-Limited edition vinyl reissue on the new vinyl lovers label. Comes pressed on 180 gram vinyl and features all the original artwork. Now features three extra bonus tracks, including i went on a chourney, mic mak mok and land of fear. The album was originally released in 1984 and was his first solo album after parting ways with the teardrop explodes. Along with being a real gem of an album its probably best known for the album artwork featuring cope dressed up as a turtle. April 2008-Lp-Vinyl lovers-€18.99

Davis, miles-Porgy and bess-Released by the columbia label in 1958 this is probably one of the most famous jazz records of all time, features two giants of jazz music miles davis and gil evans, also features cannonball adderley, paul chambers on bass and jimmy cobb on drums.-Cd-Columbia-€8.99

Endless boogie-Focus level-The debut album from this new york based outfit on the no quarter label. These guys would probably win the most aptly named band of the year if there was such a competition. This album is all about laid back groove laden stoner rock sounds or endless boogie rock. Its full of stoner blues rock, lots of mellow repetitive grooves sounding at times like the stooges on a totally stoned vibe. The band basically throw out some truly classic stoner blues riffs and just see where it takes them from there. The album almost sounds like it was just a long jam, and trust me thats a good thing with this kind of music. Fans of early stoner rock sounds will find it hard to track down a better album this year. Imagine the stones and the stooges jamming together endlessy for hours and hours. October 2009-Cd-No quarter-€12.99

Feelies, the-Crazy rhythms [180 gram vinyl reissue with bonus mp3 download coupon]-The debut album from this new york based post punk / new wave outfit. Originally released way back in 1980 and now getting a well deserved reissue on the domino label. It still stands up as one of the finest nerdy indie rock albums of the early eighties and was one of the first albums to fall into a new found genre called college rock. Features a selection of perfectly bare almost minimalist like indie rock sounds with lots of angular post punk nuances. The album now also comes with five bonus tracks which come on a bonus mp3 download coupon inside the sleeve. The bonus tracks feature the single version of fa ce la, two early demos and two live tracks. The download coupon also features a full download of all tracks featured on the album. Pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. September 2009-Lp-Domino-€18.99

Fleet foxes-Fleet foxes [limited edition double cd version]-The debut album finally arrives from this seattle based five piece on the bella union label. Its only takes a few minutes of this album to know this will possibly one of the feelgood albums of the summer this year. Their sound features the blissful vocal harmonies of the beach boys, a wee bit of classic seventies americana, late sixties vocal led folk and lots of lush chamber pop sounds. Its very much a modern folk record but spiced up with those sublime vocal harmonies and plenty of psyche pop influences. You will hear influences from the beach boys, early dylan, simon and garfunkel , the band, nashville country, crosby stills and nash, mamas and papas, sixties psychedelic folk and summery garage pop. Its a really joyous and quite intricate album too. Blissful stuff indeed. June 2008-2cd-Bella union-€12.99

Florence and the machine-Lungs-The debut album from florence welch on the island label. The album features a trio of producers with paul epworth, steve mackay and james ford from simian mobile disco all chipping in along the way. Its an album of truly kooky pop soujnds with plenty of fuzzed up indie rock influences. Imagine kate bush with a bit of the raw edge of early pj harvey, the kookiness of bjork and the piano led angry balladry of kate nash. Its got a bit of a sleazy kind of bluesy edge to it from time to time calling to mind some of the earlier white stripes albums. July 2009-Cd-Island-€14.99

Good god-A gospel funk hymnal-Another supreme collection from the numero group highlighting another obscure sub genre, this time gospel funk [yeah the title kind of gives that away doesnt it]. 18 tracks of choirs, elderly rappers pretending to be the devil, motown and some serious funk sounds. Handsome family-Honey moon [with bonus mp3 download coupon]-The ever so slightly gothic tinged country duo return with their eight studio album. The album was all recorded in their home garage studio in alberquerque. Its always a real pleasure when a new handsome family album arrives here in the store simply because i just love their darkly humurous take on the traditional sounds of old time country music. The album has a beautifully stripped down sound steeped in country roots with brett sparks deep baroque vocals adding that unique sound that only the handsome family can achieve. As ever the album is awash with quality black humour provided by rennie sparks superb lyrics. The album comes with a free mp3 download of the entire album. April 2009-Lp-Carrot top-€15.99

Harvey, pj-White chalk-Pj harvey returns with possibly her most stripped down album in many many years. The album pretty much features just harvey behind the piano with just a little help here and there from long time collaborator john parish. Along with the barest of brush drums and some very faint string sounds there is nothing else to accompany harvey as she makes her way through eleven of her most intimate songs to date. Its probably the very first time that the comparisons to kate bush have actually been accurate as harvey finds her way around the vocal scale with such ease. A very beautifully raw album. Originally released in 2007 the album has now been reissued on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. 2009-Lp-Island-€22.99

Hayes, isaac-Hot buttered soul [expanded edition]-One of the classic soul albums of all time. Originally released back in 1969 on the fantasy label. Health-Get colour [with bonus mp3 download]-Health return with their second album, their first for city slang. The album is another blistering collection of avant garde post punk, fuzzed up noise rock and pounding synth heavy krautrock vibes. Sounding at times like a great big jam session between the jesus and mary chain, suicide and my bloody valentine. Its a great big wall of sound with lots of reverb laden fuzzed up guitar sounds, wailing synths and almost tribal like minimal drum sounds. Limited edition 180 gram vinyl pressing which also comes with a bonus mp3 download of all tracks featured on the album. October 2009-Lp-City slang-€23.99

Jape-Ritual-The third solo album from jape aka richie egan who also doubles up as bass player with the redneck manifesto. The album features ten slices of wonderfully laid back electronic pop sounds with one or two more laid back folky based acoustic tunes thrown in. Its got the perfect blend of electronic beats, synth effects and live guitars so as to fall somewhere between blissful summer electronic pop and funky indie rock. Lovers of funky electro pop will love this as will fans of top quality new wave and indie pop. June 2008-Cd-V2-€9.99

October 2009-Cd-Touch and go-€13.99

Johnston, daniel-Is and always was-Is and always was features a collection of brand new studio recordings from underground legend daniel johnston. The album was produced by jason falkner and also features joey waronker on drums. The songs are very much distinctly daniel johnston like whilst long time fans will definitely notice the more lush and coherent production quality. Its a far cry from the old casette home recordings but thankfully the songs dont suffer in any way because of it. Johnston is still very much the mainmain here with waronker providing drums on most tracks and woody jackson adding acoustic guitar on a couple. The album features a collection of beautifully quirky and innocent indie pop / rock sounds. You will either love or hate this mans vocal delivery but its hard to argue with the quality of his songwriting and his particularly surreal take on life through his lyrics. September 2009-Cd-Feraltone-€13.99

Lindstromm and christabelle-Real life is no cool-Norwegian based producer hans-peter lindstromm teams up with vocalist christabelle [aka isabell h sandoo] for this collection of totally sultry electro pop and funky late night disco sounds on the smalltown supersounds label. A collection of highly hypnotic modern pop sounds. 2009-Lp-Smalltown supersounds-€23.99

Low anthem-Oh my god charlie darwin-The second full length album from the low anthem and their first for their new label bella union. The album features a rather beautiful collection of laid back rootsy folk sounds and the odd bit of full on barroom rootsy rock n roll. Its a hauntingly intimate collection of mostly acoustic based sounds with some lovely slide guitar and fiddle action. The album has a lovely rustic feel about it with some gentle country vibes comparable to the likes of whiskeytown and the alt country scene that followed them. Its also got hints of the likes of red house painters, my morning jacket and even elliott smith. Its one of those rare quiet gems thats both perfectly sombre and strangely uplifting at the same time. Comes in a lovely card gatefold sleeve. June 2009-Cd-Bella union-€9.99

May, imelda-Love tattoo [special irish only double cd version]-The debut album from this irish born rockabilly singer on the ambassador records label. The album features ten self penned tracks along with covers of wild about my lovin and its your voodoo working. This is some classic old school fifties rockabilly peppered with lots of early jazzy influences. Sounding a bit like wanda jackson fronting bill haleys band with just the odd hint of fourties jazz and some lovely sleazy burlesque influences. Features some totally rocking sounds along with the odd bit of late night jazz. This new version is an exclusive irish only release. Comes with a limited edition eight track live album.-Cd-Blue thumb records-€13.99

Morrissey-Swords [double vinyl]-Swords features a collection of hard to find b sides, all hand picked by morrissy himself and available on one album for the first time. The album draws on a selection of the b sides taken from the albums you are the quary, ringleader of the tormentors, greatest hits and years of refusal. The album features a total of eighteen tracks, plenty of which are out of print at this stage now. Its kind of like a greatest hits of b sides and saves you having to buy all the singles to get them. Limited edition double vinyl pressed, pressed on 180 gram heavy vinyl. Comes in a gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves and lyric sheet. November 2009-2lp-Polydor-€24.99

O neill, lisa-Has an album-Brand new thirteen track debut album from this cavan born singer songwriter. Try to imagine the rustic sixties like folk sounds of joan baez mixed with the quirky avant folk of the joanna newsom. Its an album of perfectly kooky folk meets indie folk pop sounds, full of very catchy and clever acoustic based sounds. October 2009-Cd-Own label-€9.99

O rourke, jim-The visitor-Jim o rourke returns with his first solo collection in eight years. The album sees o rourke in totally solo mood and features just one long instrumental track clocking in at just over 38 minutes. The album is being released pretty much as a sequel to his album bad timing from way back in 1999, particularly as it features some really beautiful lenghty passages of steel strung acoustic guitar arrangements. I have recently seen this album described a modern folk symphony and that phrase really does pin down this albums sound in two simple words. The album does have moments harking back to the work of the great john fahey but o rourke also adds in big washes of lush string sounds along with some truly awesome multitracked acoustic guitar sounds, it almost sounds like there could be ten different guitarists working at the same time. O rourke also throws in some passages of beautifully minimal piano which really adds to the overall orchestral feel to the record. I have to say this album really is best enjoyed in just one sitting and the forty or so minutes really do pass rather quickly. Its been a long wait, but in fairness albums like this dont just happen overnight. October 2009-Lp-Drag city-€15.99

Phoenix-Wolfgang amadeus phoenix-The return of this ultra cool and highly sophisticated french pop outfit with their new album on the v2 label. Its another fine collection of seventies tinged guitar pop sounds. Its damn near impossible not to get sucked in by these guys with their hook laden guitar pop coming across at times like some space rock take on the likes of elo mixed with the slightly glam pop sounds of some roxy music tunes. Its totally hip shaking and very clever at the same time without ever getting too cheesy. June 2009-Cd-V2-€9.99

Phoenix-Wolfgang amadeus phoenix [limited edition white vinyl pressing with free mp3 download]-The return of this ultra cool and highly sophisticated french pop outfit with their new album on the v2 label. Limited edition white vinyl pressing. The album also comes with a free mp3 download of all the tracks. June 2009-Lp-V2-€24.99

Psychic paramount-Gamelan into the mink supernatural-This is quite possibly one of the finest psychedelic noise rock albums i have come across in many years, try to imagine a blend of jimi hendrix on guitars backed by the drum and bass assault of lightning bolt, the album is full of totally explosive screeching guitar solos with a pounding heavily distorted rhythm section, fans of the likes of earthless, lightning bolt etc will absolutely love this album, features five fairly lenghty psyche rock noise workouts and its pure heaven to lovers of pure improv noise, originally released in 2005 on the no quarter label. The album is finally available on vinyl for the first time. 2009-Lp-No quarter-€14.99

Tenor, jimi and tony allen-Inspiration information [double vinyl with bonus mp3 download]-What sounded to us like one of the strangest collaborations on paper has turned out to be one hell of a funky jazz meets afrobeat album. Recorded under the inspiration information banner curated by the strut label, the pair were locked into a studio for a week with a host of guest musicians and then subsequently mixed by jimi tenor in his studios in finland. Its a collection of totally hypnotic almost dubby like afrobeat sounds with plenty of jimi tenors avant jazz touches. Its got to be said it just wouldnt be anything near as good as this if it wasnt for the legendary drum sounds of tony allen [drummer with fela kuti]. Pressed on double vinyl and also comes with a free mp3 download of all tracks from the album. November 2009-2lp-Strut-€23.99

Toro y moi-Blessa-Limited to only 300 copies on the carpark label. Features the tracks bless and 109. First things first, i suppose i should get the comparisons to animal collective, grizzly bear and ariel pink out of the way from the outset. This is a really delightful piece of psychedelic fuzzed up sunshine alt pop here sounding like the beach boys on a total shoegazing buzz. Its very very beautiful and infectiously catchy too. October 2009-7"-Carpark records-€5.99

Tricky-Maxinquaye [deluxe edition]-Deluxe reissue of trickys rather seminal debut album from way back in 1995. Its probably still one of the most highly regarded trip hop albums of all time and its got to said still sounds as fresh today. This package features the original twelve track debut on the first disc. The album now comes packaged with a bonus disc features all manner of b sides, remixes, out takes and three previously unreleased tricky remixes from 2009. The album features the stunning vocals of martina topley bird. The original album features overcome, ponderosa, black steel, hell is around the corner, pumpkin, aftermath, abbaon fat tracks, brand new youre retro, suffocated love, you dont, strugglin and feed me. November 2009-2cd-Island-€19.99

Wavves-Wavvves-Wavves return with a blistering new collection of the most fuzzed up garage rock you are likely to hear all year round. The album, without the fuzz, kind of reminds of the mighty sounds of the pixies meets yo la tengo in a slightly garage rock style. What wavves then do to what is actually quite a catchy collection of songs is feed absolutely everything through the biggest fuzzbox imagineable. The end result is like some totally lo fi bedroom take on the beach boys meets the pixies recorded onto a cheap dictaphone cassette. After a few listens the noise becomes less obvious and you realise there are some truly awesome indie rock songs hidden underneath. Its kind of like hearing psychocandy by the jesus and mary chain all over again. Fans of yo la tengo and the pixies should give this one a bit of time. This version on the bella union label also comes with two extra bonus tracks. July 2009-Cd-Bella union-€10.99

Whitest boy alive-Rules [aka erlend oye]-The second album from this electro pop outfit fronted by ex kings of convenience vocalist erlend oye. The album features an infectiously catchy blend of laid back electro pop sounds, seventies disco and some weird king of guitar led house hybrid. Its all beautifully lush and quite laid back featuring lots of live funky bass, jazzy like guitar sounds and oyes sumptuous vocals. Its one of those albums that you really have to hear yourself to truly appreciate but i can imagine fans of the likes of air, phoenix and classic eighties electro pop truly loving this one. A perfect sunday afternoon laid back party album. April 2009-Cd-Bubbles records-€17.99
Yeah yeah yeahs-Its blitz-Brand new album from the yeah yeah yeahs on the geffen label. Features the singles zero and heads will roll. 2009-Cd-Geffen-€9.99
