Road Records newsletter April 8th 2010

Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

Another week, another list [as they say], I hope this finds you in good form.

My two favourite albums of the week so far come from She And Him and Cloudeater [Irish Band], I don’t think I could have picked two albums further apart in sound, someone suggested I may need to go check in with a psychiatrist.

Our album of the week this weeks goes to She And Him, better known to many as actress Zooey Deschanel and songwriter M. Ward. The album is on special offer this week for only €13.99 on cd, we should have some vinyl copies for you by next Friday.
The new Darwin Deez album might be worth investigating [ie, we quite like it] and its also on special offer this week for only €13.99 on both cd and vinyl. The vinyl also comes with a bonus download coupon.
The first of Domino Records series of Elliott Smith reissues has just arrived in this weeks and its his truly wonderful debut album “Roman Candle”. The album has been newly remastered and comes reissued on cd and heavyweight vinyl, the vinyl also comes with a download coupon.
Lovers of strange 70’s electronic music should check out the excellent Sam Spence compilation just out this week on the Finders Keepers label.
Speaking of strange music, Drag City have just unearthed a long lost gem from the late seventies by Michael Yonkers, if psychedelic folk meets fuzzy garage rock is your thing, then check this one out.
Lots of new folk related albums in this week featuring a bit of everything from the pure rawness of Emit Bloch the lush folk pop of Alessis Ark, I must also add we are really loving the new Tallest Man On Earth album [although apparently he isn’t actually the tallest man on earth].
Fans of the classic Ethio-Jazz sounds of Mulatu will be thrilled to see he has finally released his first new studio album since sometime in the 80’s, the album is now in stock on cd and vinyl with the vinyl coming with a bonus download coupon too.
We have some copies of the limited cd version of the new Bonnie Prince Billy album in stock now, this version comes packaged with a bonus 7” vinyl featuring two exclusive tracks that don’t feature on the cd itself.

That’s it from me for another week, next week we will be getting ready for Record Store Day on the 17th of April and I will have lots of news on upcoming exclusive releases for the day. We will be having lots of live instores on the day, just to temp you out I will tell you we have Villagers and Patrick Kelleher with more to be added. We are also doing our annual cd compilation specially for that day, I will have the full list of bands early next week, this year we are doing 200 copies as last years 100 copies sold out before lunchtime and I know lots of you went away very disappointed. So check out the website early next week or join us on Twitter for regular info [and fun].

Until then, have a good weekend !

She and him-Volume two-No prizes for guessing this is the second album from she and him, a band featuring the songwriting skills of none other than m ward and the truly beautiful voice of actress zooey deschanel. The album features eleven brand new tracks along with covers of ridin in my car and gonna get along without you now. Anyone familiar with this pairs first album will fall in love with this one from the very first note, it pretty much carries on from where they left us in 2008. Its another dreamy collection of folk like pop sounds taking in a bit of everything from sixties motown to seventies pop sounds of bands like the carpenters. The album has a lovely kind of country twang about it too with lots of superb slide guitar action going on throughout. Basically if you like anything from sixties motown to the carpenters to the mamas and papas with a slight country twist then i cant recommend this highly enough. I can see this one being a real candidate for the soundtrack to the summer months. April 2010-Cd-Double six-€13.99

Bonnie prince billy-The wonder show of the world [limited edition with free bonus 7 inch]-Will oldham returns with his brand new album on the domino label, joined again by longtime collaborator emmett kelly [lie down in the light, the letting go and beware]. The album also features guest spots from shahzad ismaily and phil elverum [mt eerie / microphones]. This man has been making some of the finest modern rustic folk / country music under many different names going way back to 1992 when he was using the name palace [palace brothers & palace music]. Having then gone on to release several albums under his own name will oldham, he does like to confuse fans with his many alter egos, this here album is his 12th or 13th [we think] as bonnie prince billy. Will oldham is an artist that seems to love recording albums with new bands each time he enters a studio so its always a bit of a surprise when a new one arrives, you just never know what sounds are going to hit you. This new album is definitely one of his most stripped down and sparse sounding records in quite a while, if fact most of it sounds like it was just him and emmett kelly in the studio. Its nice to see him back in this almost solo role, the songs are given lots of room to express themselves. The album features a rather stunning collection of rustic country tinged modern folk music, i suppose it would be fair to say there are hints of everything from johnny cash to early dylan in here whilst also taking a bit or a tour around the more traditional sounds of early american folk music from times past. This man does have a sound all his own though, there is no mistaking will oldham with anybody else, his voice is probably one of the most distinctive sounds we know of. This man just doesnt make bad records, they are always either really good or superb and we think this is one of his best in recent years. This limited edition version comes packaged in a plastic sleeve and features a very very limited edition 7 inch vinyl featuring two tracks that dont appear on the album itself. The 7 inch features midday and you win. April 2010-2cd-Domino-€17.99

Bloch, emit-Dictaphones volume one-This is probably about as rustic as modern folk music can get without actually getting alan lomax to come around your house with his portable recorder. The album was recorded by emit bloch on an old sony cassette dictaphone recorder, hence the title i suppose. This is pure old style rustic country folk music, coming across like the spirit of hank williams inside the body of early bob dylan. Its as lo fi as folk music can get and to be honest its all the better for it too, its basically just one man and his guitar lashing through sixteen slices of old time country folk. If you want some authentic old time country music then this is about as good as it gets these days. April 2010-Cd-One little indian-€12.99

Deez, darwin-Darwin deez-The debut album on the lucky number label from american underground indie pop artist darwin deez. The album features his most recent single radar detector and nine other intimate little pop gems. This guy actually reminds me a little bit of old school off kilter indie pop rewritten for a casio keyboard. Its a lovely intimate collection of bedroom recordings full of bouncy pop sounds with hints of everything from early pavement top smooth seventies radio pop. At times it comes across like a more lo fi take on the sounds of the likes of phoenix, features lots of chunky beats and plenty of choppy new wave like guitar sounds. A very pleasently catchy slice of modern underground pop music. April 2010-Cd-Lucky numbers-€13.99

Smith, elliott-Roman candle [2010 remastered edition]-Elliott smiths truly classic debut solo album from way back in 1994. The album has now been fully remastered specially for this new reissue on the domino label. The album was originally recorded in 1993 by smith himself in his basement and is still one of his finest recordings in our humble opinion. The album features roman candle, condor aven, no name #1, no name #2, no name #3, drive all over town, no name #4, last call and kiwi maddog 20 / 20. April 2010-Cd-Domino-€13.99

Solex vs cristina martinez and jon spencer-Amsterdam throwdown king street showdown-The first fruits of this brand new collaboration between dj / musician elisabeth esselink and husband / wife team jon spencer [blues explosion] and cristina martinez [boss hog]. The album was recorded in esselinks home studio beneath her indie record store in amsterdam. Its an album of totally funky blues rock sounds, dare i even say it sounds a little bit like the blues explosion meets boss hog with lots of clever sampling and mixing going on in the background. It kind of reminds me of the blues explosion with less vocals and tons of added brass. April 2010-Cd-Bronzerat-€12.99

Spence, sam-Sam spence sounds-A collection of 26 hand picked gems from vaults of sam spences seventies recordings. Born in san francisco, sam spence is seen by many as an important piece in the somewhat complicated krautrock puzzle. After moving to munich in the seventies spence met up with kuckuck label owner eckart rahn and the pair began to record and release a collection of ambient krautrock albums. The album features a selection of some of his finest recordings from this period, from short little ambient pieces to pure dreamy synthesizer pop music. There is a bit of everything here from kraftwerk to tangerine dream to snippets of early computer based soundtrack music [ala bbc radiophonic workshop]. The album comes with a short essay by none other than andy votel with lots of info on the pieces and the origins of their sounds. Fans of early electronic music will just adore this one. Alessis ark-Soul propietor-Alessis ark is the musical project of london born twenty year old singer songwriter alessi laurent marke and this here is her second release, her first for the bella union label having already released a full length album, notes from the treehouse on the virgin label. Its pretty much a taster for her forthcoming full length on the bella union label, the ep features four brand new tracks, the robot, shovelling, dancing foot and the bird song. The ep features a lovely collection of laid back and somewhat sultry rootsy folk sounds, the kind of thing bella union seem to really adore at the moment. Think of a slightly more kooky laura marling with a little bit of a nashville twang hovering around in the background. April 2010-Cd-Bella union-€14.99

Ash-N [dare to dream]-Ash return with the latest addition to their ongoing series of alphabetical releases. The single features the track dare to dream with the flip side etched. Limited edition 7 inch only release on the atomic heart label. Pressed on heavyweight vinyl. April 2010-7"--€6.50

Astatke, mulatu-Mulatu steps ahead [with bonus downoad coupon]-Brand new studio album on the strut label from the man many people like to call the father of ethio jazz, in fairness he has been making music since the sixties so he probably has earned the name at this stage. This is his first proper full length studio album since the eighties. The album features a cast of guest musicians including byron wallen, jack yglesias, james arben and danny keane from heliocentrics, members of boston based either / orchestra and contributions from traditional ethiopian musicians. Most people will be familiar with this mans music from the wonderful ethiopiques compilations, even if you dont know the name you may have a good idea of his sound from those compilations. The album features a lovely laid back collection of mellow jazz sounds, slightly funky with plenty of that ethio jazz like vibe going on too. Byrne, david and fatboy slim-Here lies love [double cd]-I have to admit this sounded like one of the strangest collaborations we have heard of in quite some time, at first we thought it was some kind of misprint. So the former talking heads frontman really has made a new album with fatboy slim, they are joined by a host of guest singers and musicians along the way. The album is based around david byrnes song cycle about imelda marcos and estrella cumpas. Its a massive double cd collection housed in a three part gatefold card sleeve with full colour booklet. Guests on the album include camille, st vincent. Alice russell, sharon jones, allison moorer, roisin murphy, candie payne, cyndi lauper, santigold, steve earle, nellie mckay, florence welch [florence and the machine], natalie merchant, theresa anderson, martha wainwright, charmaine clamor, shara worden [my brightest diamond], nicole atkins and tori amos. April 2010-2cd-Nonesuch-€19.99

Cloudeater-Debris-Limited edition two track mini album from this new [to me anyway] irish noise / doom rock outfit. The band features ad on guitars, vocals, electronics and om on guitars, vocals, electroncs and the cd is limited to 50 hand numbered copies. Comes in card sleeve with two piece of printed plastic inside, they actually look like giant photographic negatives. The album features just two tracks spread out over 27 thunderous minutes. This is going to be pure heaven for all you fans of noise and doom rock out there, it sounds like something that merzbow and sunn o would come up with in a studio together. Its a darkly evil mass of low end noise, it actually reminds me a little of nadja but even more haunting and visceral. It is truly awesome stuff, the second track in particular, a real noisefest for the ears. April 2010-Cd-Own label-€3.99

Cold waves and minimal electronics-Volume one [with bonus mp3 download coupon]-A compilation of underground cold wave / minimal wave sounds put together by new yorks wierd records founder pieter schoolwerth and joe daniel from angular records. The album chronicles the secret underground cult genres of cold wave and minimal wave, which originated in continental europe between 1981 and 1985. Angular made it their mission to search high and low to unearth the real gems of this synth based sound in order to make a definitive retrospective of the lost genre of cold wave. Features a collection of ultra rare singles, lost radio sessions and cassette tapes. Think of a more gritty take on the sounds of the likes of human league, visage, gary numan etc. The album comes pressed on two heavy slabs of 180 gram vinyl and is housed in a gatefold sleeve with lots of detailed liner notes on all the artists featured. The album also comes with a free bonus mp3 download coupon featuring all the tracks from the vinyl. April 2010-2lp-Angular recording corporation-€19.99

Deez, darwin-Darwin deez-The debut album on the lucky number label from american underground indie pop artist darwin deez. Deez, darwin-Radar detector-Radar detector is the second single to be released from the debut album by darwin deez on the lucky numbers label. Limited to only 1000 copies. Its a wonderfully quirky slice of off kilter indie pop sounding like some old new wave gem replayed on a casio keyboard recorded in a classic lo fi bedroom style. Also features lights on. April 2010-7"-Lucky numbers-€6.50

Evelyn evelyn-Evelyn evelyn-Ok so the story goes that amanda palmer from the dresden dolls found these performing conjoined twins via myspace a few years ago, they were also part of a travelling circus, and she set about recording a concempt album with them. She then teamed up with performing artist / songwriter jason webley and brought the twins into the studio to record this debut album for them. And then the story goes....we kinda know this is a new project from palmer and webley, a concept album of sorts based around the fictional twins. What more can i say really, apart from the fact that its sounds quite like the dresden dolls, maybe leaning even more into the realms of old time vaudeville cabaret. Its full of piano led cabaret pop music, full of dramatic twists and turns along the way. April 2010-Cd-Eleven records-€16.99

Gandhis-Primrose lane-Limited edition three track ep featuring primrose lane [taken from the album you are my friend], mr data and planet blues. Released on the irish based label 1969 records, home to the likes of the pale, lir and pugwash. Its a really catchy slice of acoustic alt pop with a lovely summery kind of folk vibe. April 2010-Cds-1969 records-€3.99

Hundred in their hands-Dressed in dresden-The debut release on the warp label from this new brooklyn based duo featuring eleanore everdell and jason friedman. The original version comes backed with new remixes from kyle hall, maxime and various productions. The track features a truly infectious blend of electro disco, punk funk and no wave. Its a perfectly funky slice of modern indie disco fun with big chunky synth bass and choppy guitar guitars. The single is limited to only 300 copies in total. April 2010-12"-Warp-€6.99

One hundred and thirty five grand street-Soul jazz presents-Released to coincide with the ericka bergman film on the soul jazz label. The movie itself is a unique insight into the new york underground no wave scene in 1979. The album features extra bonus tracks not featured in the actual movie. The album features a total of sixteen tracks and includes theoretical girls [two tracks], ut, a band [two tracks], rhys chatam, chinese puzzle, the static [two tracks], morales, youth in asia [two tracks], steve piccolo [two tracks] and jill kroesen. Features some truly wild, raw no wave meets garage punk meets post punk sounds. The album comes with a full colour booklet featuring photos and a short piece about each band involved. April 2010-Cd-Soul jazz-€11.99

April 2010-Cd-Finders keepers-€13.99

Tallest man on earth-The wild hunt-The second album from swedens kristian matsson, his first for the dead oceans label, his previous album the shallow grave came on out swedish indie label gravitation. It would be hard to review this album without at least mentioning the early sounds of bob dylan, his voice and delivery really are quite reminiscent of a young dylan in his prime. The album has a lovely rustic stripped down kind of feel about, sounds like it could easily have been recorded live on his front porch at times. Its a lovely collection of rustic old time folk sounds with maybe just a hint of the intimate folk vibes of the likes of bon iver, though this collection is certainly a much more uptempo foot stomping affair. April 2010-Cd-Dead oceans-€11.99

Yonkers, michael-Lovely gold-A bit of a long lost underground gem finally sees the light of day courtesy of the drag city label. The album was recorded by yonkers way back in 1977 on his own custom built four channel tube type tape recorder and has remained unreleased since then. Yonkers recorded his first album in 1968 and it lay unreleased until sub pop released it in 2003, since then psyche rock and garage rock fans have been eager to hear more from this reclusive artist hailing from minneapolis. The album features a perfectly rustic collection of totally psychedelic folk and stripped down garage rock like vibes, at times bordering on some kind of fuzzed up minimal krautrock. Some of the tracks remind me of a more acid folk sounding spacemen 3, if that makes any sense to you. April 2010-Lp-Drag city-€15.99

Blue choir-Get ready for war-The debut five track ep featuring get ready for war, it happens to everyone, black snow, what if i could be the one and were all awake now. The blue choir are an irish independent outfit featuring barry kirwan, dave moyles, scott johnson and stevie darragh. The ep features five slices of delicate and sometimes explosive indie rock with hints of euphoric post rock and radiohead. April 2010-Cd-Own label-€4.99

The album was recorded pretty much live in the studio in an attempt to replicate their live shows. Its an album of totally trippy no wave sounds, full of fuzzed up guitars, almost tribal like beats and tons of psyche rock touches. Imagine a more psychedelic take on the early sounds of sonic youth fed through a massive echo chamber.-Cd-Thrill jockey-€14.99

Redneck manifesto-Friendship [this album will be released on the 16th april]-Brand new album from one of irelands very finest instrumental post rock outfits. Its hard to believe this is their first album in nearly six years now, the last album i am brazil was released way back in 2004, for some reason it just doesnt seem that long. The album was recorded in blackbox studios in france and is probably their first to really incorporate the keyboard sounds of fifth member neil o connor [aka somadrone]. Its definitely an album much more based on krautrock like rhythms, its still jam packed with intricate post rock guitar interplay but this one has a real motorik like groove provided by some sublime drum and bass action. If anything this album sounds more like the redneck manifesto jamming with can or neu, the lush analog synth sounds really do add a whole new dimension to their already rather complex sound. This truly is pure heaven for lovers of either intricate post rock or trance like krautrock from one of the finest in ireland [if not worldwide]. It may not have the same raw edge of their first album but i think you will find this is up there as one of their finest, if not their best so far. This vinyl pressing comes with a free mp3 download coupon featuring all copies from the album.-Lp-The richter colleceive-€14.99

She and him-Volume two [released on the 16th of april]-No prizes for guessing this is the second album from she and him, a band featuring the songwriting skills of none other than m ward and the truly beautiful voice of actress zooey deschanel. The album comes with a bonus mp3 download coupon featuring all tracks from the vinyl.-Lp-Double six-€16.99

Urick, jason-Fussing and fighting [released on the 16th of april]-Brand new limited edition vinyl only release from baltimore based musician jason urick on the thrill jockey label. The album follows on from his rather super husbands album, also on thrill jockey from earlier this year. The album features three brand new pieces along with a remix from matthew papich of ecstatic sunshine. The album is limited to only 500 copies and comes with two different sleeves. The album features 44 minutes of the most blissed out dubby space rock you are likely to hear all year round, sounding like some cross between seventies ambient space rock and the glitchy dub of bands like pole etc. Its features lots of synth led ambient soundscapes drenched in all manner of reverb and extended echo effects. There are hints of the glacial like sounds of artists like biosphere in here with lots of scratchy / glitchy sound effects given a slightly dubby feel.-Lp-Thrill jockey-€14.99
