Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter, yes we are late again with this weeks bulletin but this week I am blaming technical difficulties.

Feeney, julie-Pages-The second album from irish based julie feeney. The follow up to the choice music prize winning debut album 13 songs from 2005. The album was performed and produced almost entirely by feeney herself. The album also features a full orchestra conducted by julie. This is probably one of the more original collections from an irish artist that we have heard all year so far. The album has the lush orchestal feel of the last joanna newsom album scored by van dyke parks with lots of dramatic bursts and at times an almost broadway like feel. Add in a bit of the kooky off kilter pop sounds of kate bush and you are only getting close. Feeney uses the orchestral and brass sounds to simply accentuate her quirky vocal delivery. The album is like some modern classical pop record with moments bordering on some old musicals and plenty more inbetween. A most pleasing piece of pure originality. June 2009-Cd-Mittens-€12.99
Middleton, malcolm-Waxing gibbous [limited edition hardback book sleeve]-The former arab strap member returns with a brand new solo album. The album features contributions from king creosote and also members of mogwai. This man yet again proves he knows his way around a classic indie rock song or two on this new collection. The album is packed with infectiously catchy hooks and classic jangly indie rock sounds. Wedged between these top notch indie rock sounds are also a couple of beautifully mellow acoustic folk tunes sounding a wee bit more like his old band on a more folky vibe. Its just one of those perfect albums jam packed with quality underground pop sounds and the odd introspective ballad. Comes in a very limited hardback book style sleeve. Roberts, alasdair-Spoils-Appendix out frontman returns with a superb new collection on the drag city label. Roberts has enlisted fellow appencix out members tom crossly and gareth eggie to assist on the album along with baroque guitarist gordon ferries, percussionist alex nielson, niko matti ahti from finnish outfit kiila and concerto calendonia members david mcguinness and alison mcgillivray. Its an album of beautifully intimate and rustic folk songs with lots of traditional instrumentation. Fans of the fence collective label or the likes of king creosote, bonnie prince and james yorkston will simply adore this one. May 2009-Lp-Drag city-€13.99

A hawk and a hacksaw-Deliverance-A hawk and a hacksaw return with their fourth album with the ever reliable hun hangar ensemble in tow again. The core duo of jeremy barnes and heather trost are in truly fine form on this mostly uptempo collection of eastern european folk sounds. The album features a collection of rearranged traditional eastern european folk songs along with a couple of compositions by trost and barnes themselves. Having previously backed up beirut this pair really know their way around some rather blistering folk sounds. Its a real fun filled collection of gypsy folk songs featuring some superb brass and acoustic instrumentation. June 2009-Lp-The leaf label-€18.99
Akron family-Set em wild set em free-Akron family return with a brand new album on the crammed discs label. Now stripped down to a core three piece with the departure of regular member ryan vanderhoof. On first listen this is by far their most accessable album to date with the album taking on a somewhat country tinged americana vibe for the first few tracks. There is still plenty of their trademark rambling psyche folk in here along with a couple of truly explosive psyche rock moments building up into some superbly crazed avant garde southern rock meets pure white noise. What i love about these guys is that you simply cannot predict what is coming next as tracks can go from gentle acoustic guitar picking to full on wall of sound noise at the drop of a hat. Auerbach, dan-Keep it hid-Debut solo album from the black keys frontman and guitarist. The album features 14 perfectly formed blues tinged mellow rock sounds with hints of everything from sixties psyche pop to melodic southern rock and plenty more inbetween. The album also has a lovely byrds like kind of country roots feel about it with lots of delicate slide guitar action and lush organ sounds. As ever though its all about auerbachs beautifully languid guitar style and husky vocals. Imagine the black keys in a slightly more funky mood with a bigger more full sound. June 2009-Cd-V2-€17.99
Beach boys-Pet sounds-Now reissued on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl on the orignal capitol label. Comes with all the original artwork too. Originally released in 1966 its still one of those albums that ranks in plenty of peoples top tens of all time. Beck-One foot in the grave [reissue on double vinyl with bonus tracks]-Now reissued on the xl label. The album was originally released in 1994 on the k records label and came out pretty soon after his debut mellow gold. The album was recorded by calvin johnson in his dub narcotic studios. This is a much more stripped down almost folk like collection compared to mellow gold. The album also featured guest spots from members of built to spill, the spinanes and love as laughter. The album now comes repackaged with a massive 16 bonus tracks featuring 13 previously unreleased tracks and 3 from ultra rare 7 inch only releases. Features a really early version of its all in your mind which eventually appeared on the sea change album in 2002. Double vinyl pressing in a gatefold sleeve. June 2009-2lp-Xl-€19.99
Behan, jimmy-The echo garden-The return of this irish based electronic artists and the long overdue follow up to his debut from 2004. If we had a chart of top irish albums by ex members of staff here in road records then mr behan would be number one this week. Jimmy behan has written, produced and recorded absolutely everything on this album and its a truly meticulous piece of electronic composition. Its hard to get to get beyond comparisons to the likes of fennesz and biosphere so lets just say that fans of either of those artists will absolutely adore this album. Its full of glitchy but warm sounding electronic soundscapes with lots of lovely watery like effects and delicate organ sounds. Its very much an album that really comes to life on headphones where you can truly get a feeling for the intricate details and mass of layered sounds deep in the mix. A real treat and a must for fans of the sounds of labels like touch. June 2009-Cd-Audiobulb records-€11.99
Bell orchestre-As seen through windows-The return of this canadian based instrumental outfit this time on the arts and crafts label. Previous album was on rough trade. The album features an ever changing and rather quirky collection of instrumental sounds with heaps of brass and lashings of orchestral sounds. Sometimes sounding like the neo classical vibes of the rachels and then moving on to something more akin to a big band take on the likes of the dirty 3. Its almost like some post rock chamber music with lots of intricate details and big bursts of dirty brass. June 2009-Cd-Arts and crafts-€14.99

Biram, scott h-Somethings wrong lost forever-The return of this one man rustic blues show with his third album for the bloodshot label. The album features a perfectly raw collection of both old time blues sounds and country tinged folk. Comparable at times to the raw sounds of artists like william elliott whitmore this is a man who also spent much of his youth in noisy punk bands before heading off on a solo career. There is still a bit of the old punk rock spirit about his delivery which sees biram almost spitting out the words on the more uptempo tracks. I can kind of hear the spirit of early johnny cash in here. One for fans of rustic alt country, seasick steve, william elliott whitmore and the likes. June 2009-Cd-Bloodshot records-€14.99

Bob log is a one man band featuring slide guitar, kick drum and a microphone locked inside a motorcycle helmet. Sounding like a garage rock elvis presley meets the blues explosion there is only one man that can make records like this. Its based in old style blues and then fuzzed up to the max with tons of sixties garage rock like spirit. You really have to hear this to totally understand the madcap genius that is bob log but if you like a bit of funky garage blues with lots of top notch slide guitar action then look no further. Along with a collection of totally new material booker t also covers hey ya by outkast, get behind the mule by tom waits and the drive by truckers track space city. Released on the anti label. Brand neu-Various artists-An album dedicated to the sounds of the legendary krautrock outfit neu and their influence on modern underground music. Burning spear-Spear burning-Amazing collection of self produced tracks from the mid to late seventies. Recorded at harry j studios and joe gibbs studios in kingston. Comes with all the usual high standard liner notes that pressure sounds seem to excel in with these releases. The album compiles a collection of impossible to find singles originally released on winston rodneys own spear label which were also his first excursions into the world of self production. Rodney comes backed by the revolutionaries and the album also includes all the dub flip sides. Double vinyl pressing in gatefold sleeve. Every home should have at least one burning spear album in my opinion. 2001-2lp-Pressure sounds-€15.99
Case, neko-Middle cyclone [double vinyl with bonus mp3 download]-The return of one of alt countrys finest voices in our opinion with one of her most uptempo collection so far. Along with her regular backing band the album features guest spots from calexicos joey burns and john convertino, giant sands howe gelb, m ward, steve berun from los lobos, members of new pornographers, sarah harmer and garth hudson. The album is pretty much split between her trademark smokey late night acoustic ballads and some perfectly catchy country roots rock songs. Its very much an album taking off from where fox confessor left us nearly three years ago. Limited edition double vinyl pressing on 180 gram vinyl with free mp3 download. Chapters, the-Perfect stranger-The debut album from this dublin based outfit. Produced by ciaran bradshaw and beechpark and suite studios. Features the recent download only single videotapes. The album features some really catchy melodic alt rock sounds with a bit of soulful rock thrown in for good measure. Comes in a foldout card sleeve. June 2009-Cd-3u records-€18.99
Clues-Clues-The debut album on the constellation label from this new montreal based outfit fronted by former unicorns and angels morts members alden penner and brendan reed. Rooted in noisy post punk and no wave sounds this is an album with so many twists and turns that tracks can range from full on blistering post punk to mellow piano led balladry. As is always the way with constellation releases this is an album that refuses to be pigeonholed into any particular genre. Features moments of bursting post rock, avant garde psyche folk, arcade fire like euphoric indie rock, acoustic folk, chamber pop and angular no wave noise. A challenging and always rewarding listen. Cohen, leonard-Songs of leonard cohen-The songs of leonard cohen gets a much overdue reissue treatment by the sundazed label. Features suzanne, master song, winter lady, the stranger song, sisters of mercy, so long marianne, hey thats no way to say goodbye, stories of the street, teachers and one of us cannot be wrong. Count basie-Basie jam 3-Recorded in los angeles in 1976. Features bye bye blues, moten swing, i surrender dear and song of the islands. Along with basie on piano the band also featured benny carter on sax, louis bellson on drums, john heard on bass, eddie lockjaw davis on sax, joe pass on guitar, clark terry on trumpet and al grey on trombone. Crystal stilts-Love is a wave-Brooklyn based crystal stilts return with a brand new track not featured on their recent debut album alright on the night. Limited to only 1000 copies on black and white patterned vinyl. The flip also features a new track sugar baby. A catchy slice of jesus and mary chain like indie rock with a hint of the classic late eighties jangly indie vibe. May 2009-7"-Angular recording corp-€4.50
Deacon, dan-Bromst-The return of this baltimore based one man noise making machine with his new album on the car park label. Its another superb collecton of full steam ahead gameboy like electro pop sounds which also sees deacon showing off his slightly softer side on some of the more downbeat tunes. Try to imagine animal collective or panda bear making sounds with an old atari computer with a host of cassette samples in tow. Throw in lots of cheesy casio keyboard sounds and you have one of the weirdest but more original electronic pop albums of the year so far. This man really has just put the fun back into electronic music again. June 2009-Cd-Carpark records-€17.99
Dylan, bob-Another side of bob dylan-Originally from 1964 this is a classic early dylan folk album. Features all i really want to do, black crow blues, spanish harlem incident, chimes of freedom, i shall be free, to ramona, motorpsycho nitemare, my black pages, i dont believe you, ballad in plain d and it aint me babe. Dylan, bob-The times they are a changin-Dylans third album from way back in 1964 and his first album to feature all his own songs. Features the times they are a changin, ballad of hollis brown, with god on our side, one too many mornings, north country blues, only a pawn in their game, boots of spanish leather, when the ship comes in, the lonesome death of hattie carroll and restless farewell. Comes in the original sleeve and is now pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Features the original mono album mix. Also comes with the original paper inner sleeve with lyrics.-Lp-Sundazed-€18.99
Dylan, bob-Together through life [double vinyl with bonus cd]-Very very limited edition vinyl pressing of this brand new bob dylan album. Comes pressed on two slabs of 180 gram vinyl the album was recorded at the end of 2008 with his touring band. Its was probably one of the quickest sessions he has worked on so the album has a lovely raw almost live like feel about it. Fela kuti-Shuffering and shmiling [plus no agreement]-Originally released in 1977 on the new york based celluloid label. Features backing band afrika 70. The album features the original two version of shuffering and shmiling. This new version is pretty much two entire vinyl albums compiled onto one cd. Also included is his no agreement album from the same year featuring the tracks no agreement and the instrumental dog eat dog. No agreement also features the trumpet work of lester bowie from the art ensemble of chicago. A truly superb introduction into the early sounds of afro beat. Fever ray-Fever ray-Karin dreijer andersson from the knife releases her debut solo album on the rabid label. Gudnadottir, hildur-Without sinking-An album of rather beautifully haunting solo cello pieces from icelandic neo classical composer hildur gudnadottir on the touch label. Its pretty much an entirely solo project from lytle with all instruments played by him along with all production and recording. To be honest from the outset this is not a million miles away from the grandaddy sound particularly as lytle still handles all the vocals on this one. Mastodon-Crack the skye-The high kings of modern prog metal return with their fourth studio album. The album features seven brand new tracks of which two clock in at over 10 minutes each. Its antoher superbly thunderous collection of sludge like stoner metal with tons of their now trademark prog rock like meanderings. As ever with mastodon its a concept album with this one based around the themes of tsarist russia. The band have worked with springsteens producer brendan o brien on this one and he really seems to how to deal with the mulitude of layers these guys produce. Her previous collections have been very much solo intimate afffairs but nadler has enlisted a full band for this new collection on the kemado label. Its still very much an intimate collection of folk and roots based sounds with just a slightly fuller sounds on occassion. Its an album that really does remind me of a more acoustic mazzy star with just the odd hint of the kooky sounds of maybe joanna newsom or cat power. Papercuts-You can have what you want-The third album from san franciscan solo artist jason quever. This is definitely turning into the year of hazy underground psychedelic pop with this album joining the likes of animal collective and grizzly bear on top of the pile. The album doesnt particularly sound like either of those artists but the hazy laid back spirit is quite similar. The album has hints of classic sixties underground pop whilst also taking in a bit of early nineties shoegazing dream pop. The album is full of sixties like farfisa organ sounds, garage pop guitars and quevers dreamlike soulful voice. Sleep-Holy mountain-Originally released in 1994 on the legendary earache label. The album has now been fully remastered and comes with a bonus track snowblind and also a video track for dragonaut. Features al cisneros, chris hakius and matt pike who is now the mainman with high on fire. Still to this day this album is cited as one of the true landmark stoner rock albums and one of the earliest bands along with kyuss to develop this sludge infested sabbath like sound. Sunn o-Monoliths and dimensions-Stephen o malley and greg anderson are joined by regular contributors attila csihar, oren ambarchi and earths dylan carlson on this their seventh album. More surprising though is the addition of brass, reed, strings and a viennese female choir alongside composer eyving kang and one time sun ra and john coltrane contributor julian priester. The album features four lengthy pieces spread over a total of 54 minutes. The opening track is simply classic dirge like doom metal that will be pure heaven to long time fans. Coming as more of a surprise may be the second track opening up with the angelic voices of a full choir giving off a sound that i can only describe as church metal. Its uplifting and utterly evil at the same time. The closing track reminds me slightly more of the twangy guitar of the last few earth albums with lots of added brass. Normally i dont trust artists own descriptions but i have to say this one is totally spot on this time. Its very much an album dedicated to the sound of the human voice with viola using multiple versions of his own voice more as an instrument than something that simply sings words. Its an album that ranges in sound from pure psychedelic electronic pop to some beautifully rhythmic ambient like pieces. There are elements of the psyche pop sounds of animal collective or grizzly bear but this is a much more mellow laid back approach. The ablum also comes with a bonus eight track dvd. Whitmore, william elliott-Animals in the dark-One of our favourite modern folk singers returns with his fourth album and his first for the anti label. Featuring one of the most distinctive voices around at the moment whitmore sounds like the meeting of tom wats and the ghost of leadbelly. The album is very much seeped in the early sounds of american folk music incorporating everything from appalachian folk to country bluegrass. The album features a collection of rustic solo acoustic tracks and a couple of totally rawkus full band affairs. Fans of the likes of seasick steve or charlie parr will just adore this one. Williams, hank-The unreleased recordings [gospel keepsakes]-The album features a collection of gospel tracks culled from the triple cd box set from last year. The album features 15 of hanks finest moments recorded specially for the mothers best sponsored radio shows. The tracks were all pretty much recorded live in one take and whilst the majority are traditional gospel songs they are all delivered in that very distinctive hank williams honky tonk fashion. A wonderful collection of rare tracks and a fine way to dip into these recordings if you dont want to go all out with the triple cd box set. The sound quality is of the highest standard too. If we had a chart of top irish albums by ex members of staff here in road records then mr behan would be number one this week. Jimmy behan has written, produced and recorded absolutely everything on this album and its a truly meticulous piece of electronic composition. Its hard to get to get beyond comparisons to the likes of fennesz and biosphere so lets just say that fans of either of those artists will absolutely adore this album. Its full of glitchy but warm sounding electronic soundscapes with lots of lovely watery like effects and delicate organ sounds. Its very much an album that really comes to life on headphones where you can truly get a feeling for the intricate details and mass of layered sounds deep in the mix. Feeney, julie-Pages-The second album from irish based julie feeney. The follow up to the choice music prize winning debut album 13 songs from 2005. The album was performed and produced almost entirely by feeney herself. The album also features a full orchestra conducted by julie. This is probably one of the more original collections from an irish artist that we have heard all year so far. The album has the lush orchestal feel of the last joanna newsom album scored by van dyke parks with lots of dramatic bursts and at times an almost broadway like feel. Add in a bit of the kooky off kilter pop sounds of kate bush and you are only getting close. Feeney uses the orchestral and brass sounds to simply accentuate her quirky vocal delivery. The album features another rather beautiful and dramatic collection of mostly piano led ballads with plenty of lush string arrangements. Its full of looping sound effects overlayed with beach boys like vocal harmonies and some incredibly melodic sixties like psyche pop vibes. Its a very intricate affair that changes with every listen taking in bits of sufjan stevens like chamber pop along the way too. The album features a host of almost 30 guest musicians including sarah winchester from a weather, becky dawson from ah holly famly and also members of yellow swans and parenthetical girls. Baker, aidan and tim hecker-Fantasma parastasie-Limited edition collaboration between nadja member aidan baker and canadian based electronic trickster tim hecker. The album is the perfect meeting of harsh glitch based soundscapes ala fennesz and the hypnotic drone rock that nadja excel in. Baker brings a bit more of his solo work into this project though with the addition of acoustic guitars and treated piano more to the fore than fuzzed up electric guitars. Hecker seems to provide the most delicate and brittle drone over which baker then adds some really lovely classical guitar picking and moment of harold budd like piano minimalism. There are still some moments of totally fuzzed up drone rock on here too as the nadja like sounds come to the fore on the more electric based fourth track. November 2008-Cd-Alien 8-€18.99

Its a totally raw garage sound with lots of scuzzy guitar sounds, snotty punk rock attitude and primal drum beats. Boris-Smile-The brand new album from japans finest garage rock and drone experts features contributions from stephen o malley from sunn o and michio kurihara from ghost. The album features seven blistering tracks ranging from the beautifully haunting drone rock to some totally in yer face primal garage rock. The last few albums from boris have very much been in the doom rock mode but this one sees the band up the tempo quite a lot for the majority of it. Along with their altar this is probably their most diverse album to date which even sees the band delve into a bit of quality seventies metal. Be prepared for some fuzzed up guitars and howling solo action here folks. If there is a better band doing this kind of rock noise around at the moment i would love to hear them. Bunyan, vashti-Some things just stick in your mind [limited double cd version]-A real treasure trove for vashti bunyan lovers. The album features a collection of long lost tracks recorded between 1964 and 1967. The album opens up with all of her andrew loog oldham produced singles for the decca label and sees bunyan deliver some of her poppiest moments, its all classic early sixties folk pop with tons of lush strings and orchestral arrangements. Imagine the totally distinctive and brittle voice of bunyan fronting the likes of the carpenters or even the mamas and papas. Its all very different to her work on just another diamond day but equally as superb. This version also comes with a bonus disc featuring 12 previously unreleased recordings from her very first studio recordings made in london in 1964. These are a much more intimate collection of recordings featuring just bunyan and acoustic guitar and are probably more akin to just another diamond day. Some truly haunting stripped down folk songs complete with bunyans spoken work introductions. Its hard to imagine why these recordings have never been released before. Chequerboard-Penny black-The second album from this irish based electronic artist john lambert and the follow up to the brilliant gothica from 2002. The album features nine truly beautiful pieces of lush mellow electronica gently blended with the most intricate acoustic guitar picking. If you are a fan of the sounds of four tet or boards of canada then i really cannot recommend this highly enough. Its simply one of the most perfect collections of mellow late night electronica you will find at the moment. Layered over the subtle beats and ambient soundscapes are some truly beautiful intricate guitar picking bordering on spanish flamenco at times. Connors, loren-Night through [singles and collected works 1976 to 2004]-Reissue of this excellent 3 cd set featuring a collection spanning four decades from one of the leading lights on the experimental guitar scene. The album features a total of 70 diverse tracks from connors ranging from some minimal avant garde sounds right up to his truly exceptional acoustic slide guitar work. Its pretty obvious straight away that this man has a deep deep love of traditional guitar blues and folk sounds as the album opens up with some truly haunting solo slide guitar works. Features sounds ranging from the old traditional blues to john fahey likes experimentation to the sparse desert likes sounds of ry cooder. Doiron, julie-I can wonder what you did with your day-The return of julie doiron on the jag jaguwar label. Doiron was formerly a member of erics trip and also features frequently with the mt eerie band. The album is her first since woke myself up in 2007. Its a great collection of scuzzy indie rock sounds and some more gentle intimate indie folk. At times reminscent of the classic bouncy pop of the breeders or the pixies with the more gentle tracks having a much more bedroom folk like feel. Elliott, ramblin jack-Sings woody guthrie and jimmie rodgers and cowboy songs-If you have ever had the pleasure to see this man live you will already know he is one of the finest storytelling songwriters of all time and also a major influece on the early works of singers like bob dylan. The album is basically two of his older albums combined onto one cd. The woody guthrie tunes are culled from his 1960 released album whilst the cowboy songs are taken from various different sessions and sees elliott take on some classic old standards from the early twentieth century. Its full of long meandering guitar led epic songs coming across like early syd barrett era pink floyd jamming with sonic youth which at times gives the album a somewhat no wave like feel. Soap and skin-Lovetune for vacuum-Soap and skin is the work of one very talented 18 year old austrian artist by the name of anja plaschg and this here is her damn fine and rather kooky debut album. At times the album is kind of like a dark goth tinged take on the dramatic sounds of antony and the johnsons with some added old time german cabaret vibes. In other places she kind of reminds me of a slightly darker kate bush blended with the haunting ethereal sounds of marissa nadler. The album is full of lots of dramtic mostly piano led ballads with plenty of subtle electronic trickery added in deep in the mix. A beautifully quirky debut. May 2009-Cd-Pias-€12.99

Tharpe, sister rosetta-Up above my head-22 track mid price selection on the complete blues label. The album features some of the finest uptempo and rocking gospel sounds. This lady probably single handedly revolutionized gospel in the twenties and thirties with her boisterous vocal delivery and totally rocking guitar playing. She was probably one of the first female gospel singers to incorporate blues and swing into pure gospel music giving it a real uptempo and much more guitar based rocking sound.
