Road Records newsletter - January 14th 2010

Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

Our first mailout of the year so welcome to the year 2010 and we hope this email finds you in good form wherever you may be.

Our first album of the month award goes to the new album from Owen Pallett [aka Final Fantasy] and we are offering the album for the month at the special price of only €11.99 on cd and €15.99 on double vinyl, by the way the double vinyl comes with a digital download coupon.
Our first album of the week award goes to the Vampire Weekend album, it actually came out last week but hey we are still playing catchup here after the wonderfully snowy start to the year. The album is on sale for only €13.99 on cd and €14.99 on vinyl.
There is plenty of new stock to get excited about, even this early in the year and I should also mention some of the fantastic presales we have coming up in the next 2 / 3 weeks too [listed below].
The Bonnie Prince Billy live vinyl only release is finally in stock, sorry about the delay, for once it wasn’t my fault at all.
Dare I say it but Jello Biafra has actually made a damn fine new album, his first in …….years [you can fill in the blank yourself].
An interesting Tim Buckley live album from the archives finally seeing the light of day courtesy of Tompkins Square label. The album was recorded way back in 1967 to an audience of only 35 people.
The Lisa Hannigan album has just been reissued with a bonus live cd included now.
A couple of things that missed out on our last mailout of last year, simply because they arrived just a little too late but are still worth mentioning are the Pete Molina mini album, Piano Magic’s most recent album, Susanna And Her Magical Orchestra on vinyl, This Immortal Coil [Coil tribute album], a long lost Irmin Schmidt [Can] album and a C. Joynes album on Bo Weavil.

That’s it for me, have a good weekend and see you next week.

Green, adam-Minor love-The former moldy peaches singer returns with his sixth full length solo album to date. The album was recorded with long time producer noah georgeson in los angeles. The album features some help from rodrigo amarante [little joy], his brother joel and megapuss members greg and joe steinbeck. The album features a selection of downbeat indie pop sounds, uniquely adam green, with his baritone vocal sounds coming across like some lo fi leonard cohen. The album features a blend of lo fi folky sounds and fuzzy indie rock. January 2010-Lp-Rough trade-€14.99

Major stars-Return to form-Return to form is the seventh album from major stars and their second in a row for the drag city label. The band features wayne rogers and kate village, they both played in crystalized movements in the eighties and were part of magic hour too. The pair are joined by guitarist tom leonard, the third album so far to feature him. The album features some thunderous blasts of old school grunge rock with a somewhat seventies psyche rock like feel about them, full of blistering fuzzed up guitar solo action. It kind of reminds me a little bit of a more psyche tinged melvins, you know that kind of sludge rock like grunge sound of old. January 2010-Cd-Drag city-€13.99

Pallett, owen [final fantasy]-Heartland-The artist formerly known as final fantasy returns with his third solo outing to date, he is now recording under his own name due to some stupid legal case taken against him for using the final fantasy name. His first album came out way back in 2005 [has a good home] and was followed by the exceptional second album he poos clouds in 2006. It may be nearly four years since his last album but its fair to say pallett has been busy with other projects in the meantime. Along with touring as a one man band pallett has also provided string arrangements for several bands including grizzly bear, arcade fire, beirut, last shadow puppets and mountain goats. This is his first album to be released on the domino label. This is an album of true orchestral beauty, probably one of the most lush collections your are likely to hear all year round. Known for his superb violin playing this album features what sounds to my ears like a full blown orchestra at times, full of dramatic string and horn bursts. Its an album the flows seamlessy through many genres with such each too. Sometimes you think you could be listening to some modern take on steve reich or phillip glass and before you know it things turn into some kind of indie broadway musical [ala sufjan stevens maybe]. Its highly intricate and joyously catchy at the same time, full of layered string sounds and palletts gentle almost hushed vocal delivery. Its one of those rare albums that comes up with something new each time you listen to it, sometimes classical pop and sometimes just pure classic quirky indie pop. Its got to be said this is something truly original. January 2010-Cd-Domino-€11.99

Also comes with a free digital download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. January 2010-2lp-Domino-€15.99

These new puritans-Hidden-These new puritans return with their second album on angular recordings. A much more expansive collection of sounds compared to their first outing with one featuring all manner of strange new instruments including a six foot japanese taiko drums, a thirteen piece brass and woodwind ensemble and also foley sound effect recording techniques. The best way to approach this album is pretty much forget everything you have heard before from these new puritans, this is something very unique and unlike anything they have done before. Its an album of huge scope and ambition, blending so many different influences into one big thunderous collection of all things avant rock. At times its a dark hearted collection of industrial rock sounds complete with heavy synth vibes whilst on other tracks reminiscent of the kind of avant jazz rock of the likes of the soft machine. On other tracks they blend ragga and dancehall like beats with some kind of rock tinged dubstep, throwing lots of arcade fire like group chanting over the top. The brass sounds throughout really add a unique flavour to this album, at times sounding like the bug jamming with an old mining town brass band. You will either love or hate this album but there is no denying its huge scope and ambition. January 2010-Cd-Angular recordings-€12.99

Vampire weekend-Contra-New york based vampire weekend return with their second album for the xl label and the long awaited follow up to their self titled debut from 2008. Its another incredibly catchy selection of tracks which sees the band yet again seamlessy blend african beats and rhythms with catchy melodic indie rock. Its full of intricate yet highly catchy african like guitar rhythms, almost baile funk like electronic beats and psychedelic tinged indie pop. There really is nothing to compare these guys to, people talk about the graceland influences but these guys take that sound off into far too many tangents to warrant any comparisons to paul simon. At the heart of this album is a very very clever pop record subsequently layered with tons of african and psyche pop sounds. A much more sophisticated and lush affair than their debut but you wont be let down by it. January 2010-Cd-Xl-€13.99

Ailsa craig-A silent no-Ailsa craig is a brand new project from mark robson [random number, sierpinski, coping saw, raushen and hood]. The band on the album features a host of friends helping out including singer caroline mcchrystal [manhattan love suicides], lee hopper [ex sierpinski], paul elam [declining winter and fieldhead], gavin montgomery [cissy], andrew stavely [the inecto school] and darren lockwood [manhattan love suicides]. The album features a lovely gentle blend of mellow indie sounds and subtle electronica. The more laid back sparse minimal sounds kind of remind me of the likes of hood with little bits of early stereolab thrown in. Its a really intricate blend of minimal post rock, indie krautrock, piano slow core and electronica. Definitely one for fans of hood, movietone etc. December 2009-Cd-Squirrel records-€12.99

At swim two birds-Before you left-The third solo album from the voice behind the montgolfier brothers, roger quigley. The band on the album features regular live collaborators sophia lockwood and otto smart along with special guest martin rebelski from doves who wrote and arranged the track let her go. The album is a beautifully sedate collection of folk like sounds falling somewhere between the likes of elliott smith and mark kozelek [red house painters]. Its a lovely woozy kind of folk sound interspersed with hints of psyche folk, gentle electronic beats and the kind of minimal slow core of the likes of early low. A quietly enchanting album that will be perfect for these dark winter nights. December 2009-Cd-Vespertine and son-€13.99

Black heart procession-Six-Brand new album from the black heart procession, formed many years ago from the ashes of three mile pilot, one have became the legendary pinback and the other is now black heart procession. The album features another fine collection of dark hearted gothic tinged sounds with this one having a somewhat folk and folk rock like feel about it. There are elements of everything from nick cave to tom waits to willard grant conspiracy in here, its probably one of their fuller sounding albums with a couple of the tracks actually reminding me of a more downbeat gallon drunk. Its an album full of dramatic almost bluesy like dirges with even the odd nod towards seminal outfit swans. Its dark and gothic but somehow uplifting at the same time. Very very limited double vinyl pressing. Features three sides of music and the fourth side is etched. December 2009-2lp-Temporary residence-€19.99

Bonnie prince billy and the picket line-Funtown comedown-Limited edition vinyl only release from bonnie prince billy [will oldham] and backing band the picket line. The band features oscar lee riley parsons on guitar, dob dixon on electric guitar, johathan kempf on mandolin, cheyenne mize on fiddle, danny kiely on double bass and bradly reinstedler on banjo. The album features a selection of bonnie prince billy originals, a few from the picket line and a cover of the merle haggard classic rambling fever. The album was recorded live to a small audience of friends, its a lovely rustic feelgood collection of tracks with a somewhat raw old time folk kind of feel. Its really does sound like these guys had a lot of fun recording this album with oldham sounding in particularly joyous mood. January 2010-Lp-Sea note-€15.99

Brian jonestown massacre-Love ep-Originally released back in 1997 and now reissued on a records [run by anton newcombe]. Buckley, tim-Live at the folklore centre [march 6th 1967]-Features a collection of unreleased live recordings made by izzy young at this famed new york based folklore centre. The cd features the entire 16 track concert in its original running exactly as it was performed in front of a meagre 35 people. The album comes packaged with a previously unpublished interview with buckley by izzy young from 1967 and all new notes from young. The album was produced by josh rosenthal [tompkins square] and was mastered from the original tapes. Its a beautifully intimate and raw collection of sounds, one of the earliest official live albums available from this man also. December 2009-Cd-Tompkins square-€16.99

Candidates-If you got it-Five track mini album from this irish based outfit. Features if you got it, pass the brack, hot and heavy, paid my dues and if you got it [alternate mix]. The candidates are a nine piece funk / soul outfit based here in dublin. The album features lots of funky brass sounds calling to mind some early james brown mixed with the funk of parliament. January 2010-Cd-Own label-€6.99

Forest fire-Survival-The debut album from this brooklyn based outfit on the broken sound label. The album features a lovely downbeat and rather quirky collection folky tinged indie and alt rock sounds. The more mellow laid back tunes kind of remind me a bit of the likes of either fleet foxes or the low anthem, deeply rooted in old folk sounds but given a quirky modern twist. Its also got a little bit of the kind of downbeat slow core spirit of early low albums with a much more rustic folky thing going on throughout. December 2009-Cd-Broken sound-€13.99

Freedom rhythm and sound-Soul jazz presents revolutionary jazz in the usa 1965 to 1980 [volume two]-This album features many of the major artists featured in a simultaneously released 200 page hardback book, as well as many hidden gems made on very small run cottage industry jazz labels from this period.-2lp-Soul jazz-€15.99

Hannigan, lisa-See sew [limited edition with bonus live cd]-The debut solo album from the former vocalist with damien rice and contributor to the cake sale album from last year. The album feaures hannigan on vocals and guitars along with guest spots from tom osander, shane fitzsimons, donagh molloy, lucy wilkins, vyvienne long, gavin glass, justin carroll, cathy davey and rhob cunningham. The album features a beautiful cover of the bert jansch classic courting blues. The album features a really beautiful mix of mellow acoustic folk sounds and some totally blissful uptempo folky pop. There is a bit of everything from the pure guitar driven pop sounds of cathy davey to the more folky sixties like indie pop of belle and sebastian. Its almost like a perfect summer soundtrack. The album now comes packaged with a bonus enhanced live cd. The live tracks were recorded at fingerprints indie record store in santa monica during her tour in november last year. The album comes presented in different artwork to the original version featuring a new card outer sleeve. January 2010-2cd-Barp-€15.99

Jello biafra and the guantanamo school of medicine-The audacity of hype-As you may or may not already know [but you should] jello biafra was once the singer with one of the finest punk rock bands of all time, the dead kennedys. He has made many many spoken word albums over the last few years but in my opinion it has been quite a long time since he has made a truly awesome record so its with great joy to announce that this is finally a truly awesome record. Biafra is joined by ralph spight [victims family] on guitars, jon weiss [sharkbait, horsey] on drums, billy gould [faith no more] on bass and kimo ball [freak accident, griddle] on guitars. The dual guitar assault of kimo ball and ralph spight create the closest thing to the dead kennedys sound you are going to hear, apart from actually listening to them. Its an album of classic surf tinged old school punk rock with a bit of everything from classic garage punk to just solid stooges like rock n roll. Nine blistering tracks of the finest music this man has produced in quite some time. December 2009-Cd-Alternative tentacles-€14.99

Johnson, nat and the figureheads-Roman radio-Nat johnson is the former singer / guitarist with monkey swallows the universe and this is her debut solo album, released on the damaged goods label. The band features fellow monkey swallows the universe member kevin gori, chris loftus [fury of the headteachers] and neil piper [champion kickboxer]. Not the normal kind of sound you would expect from the damaged goods label, this is much more of a melodic almost rootsy pop kind of affair. It actually kind of reminds me of a slightly rootsy sounding take on the likes of belly or juliana hatfield, its got to be said it is incredibly catchy stuff. There is even a bit of a neko case kind of feel about it from time to time. December 2009-Lp-Damaged goods-€12.99

Joynes, c-Revenants prodigies and the restless dead-Another stunning collection of rustic folk based instrumentals from english based avant garde guitarist c joynes on the ever reliable bo weavil label. Joynes is best known his solo guitar compositions but this album sees him joined by a host of guest musicians featuring bass, banjo, zither, piano, viola and theramin. The sounds on the album range from the beautifully meditative sounds of the likes of john fahey or robbie basho to both eastern european and japanese folk music. Its a really beautiful blend of sounds and something i can see fans of the likes of james blackshaw really loving. December 2009-Cd-Bo weavil-€12.99

Lloyd, richard-The jamie neverts story-The former television and rocket from the tombs guitarist returns with a brand new solo album. The album is the long awaited collection of jimi hendrix covers recorded with his band the surfmonkeys. Lloyd is joined by bassist keith hartel, chris purdy and a very special guest appearence from original television drummer billy ficca. Lloyd set down a list of rules for the recording process, some of which were, no more than three guitars on any one track, no effects pedals allowed just live raw guitars, only stratocaster guitars allowed. The album features ten truly classic hendrix tracks given a somewhat fresh feel by lloyd, its strange but his distinctive guitar sound does actually alter the songs a little, you definitely know you are listening to the former television guitarist on this. Features covers of purple haze, aint no telling, spanish castle magic, i dont live today, may this be love, little miss lover, wait until tomorrow, castles made of sand, bold as love and are you experienced. December 2009-Cd-Parasol records-€14.99

It kind of reminds me a little bit of a more psyche tinged melvins, you know that kind of sludge rock like grunge sound of old. January 2010-Cd-Drag city-€13.99

Moebius, dieter-Kram-Dieter moebius is some kind of legend when it comes to krautrock and synthesizer based music. Not happy with being a member of krautrock legends cluster / kluster he was also in harmonia with fellow krautrock legend michael rother [from neu]. He has only recorded a handful of solo recordings [the list is huge if you include collaborations] and according to the sleeve notes with this album, this is only his fifth official solo album. Moebius deals in a kind of timeless synth based ambient sound, you could be listening to anything from the last thirty years here, sometimes kraftwerk like and others more like the famous brian eno ambient albums. Its full of pulsating synth sounds, oscillating moog like effects and gentle synth generated beats. It takes in a bit of everything from early krautrock to ambient prog to the kind of weird tinkering of the bbc radiophonic workshop. December 2009-Cd-Klangbad-€16.99

Molinari, pete-Today tomorrow and forever ep-Recorded in playground sound studios in nashville with the legendary vocal group the jordanaires, these guys have worked with the likes of elvis and patsy cline in the past. The ep features four classic old time track covered by molina including the title track, satisfied mind, tennessee waltz and guilty. Features some truly classic fifties like rockabilly sounds with some sublime vocal harmonies. December 2009-10"-Damaged goods-€5.99

The album is pressed on double 180 gram vinyl and comes in a lovely heavy card gatefold sleeve. Also comes with a free digital download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. January 2010-2lp-Domino-€15.99
Piano magic-Ovations-According to the darla website this is the tenth official album from piano magic, its hard to keep up at this stage now. This one features guest spots from two members of legendary 4ad outfit dead can dance with mainman brendan perry providing vocals on two tracks and percussionist peter ulrich chipping in on a few also. Its an album of delicate and ever so dark hearted new wave tinged sounds with hints of everything from joy division to cocteau twins to dead can dance themselves. Its the kind of sound that really brings me back to the classic early sounds of the 4ad label with lots of shimmering guitars, reverb laden vocals and lush washes of synth. Its pretty much a perfect meeting of electronic sound effects and live instrumentation with big pounding beats merging effortlessly with fuzzy live guitars. There are some lovely kind of oriental influences popping up from time to time also, especially the tracks featuring peter ulrich on percussion. December 2009-Cd-Make mine music-€10.99

Sarsparilla-Slave to the cat gang-Album number two from irish based producer damien lynch, the second to be released on the alphabet set label. The album features a lovely delicate collection of breezy electro like almost ambient sounds calling to mind the likes of boards of canada or even an instrumental stereolab. Its full of gentle beats, analog synth sounds and lots of wobbly electro like sound effects. There are a couple of more uptempo almost seventies disco like tunes, maybe calling to mind the dancefloor sounds of the likes of georgio moroder. January 2010-Cd-Alphabet set-€7.99
Schmidt, irmin-Kamasutra-Long lost recording from way back in 1968 from irmin schmidt. The album has now been fully remastered from the original analog master tapes. Joining schmidt is the original can lineup that played on their debut album monster movie and they are michael karoli, jaki liebezeit and malcolm mooney. The album also features vocals from margarete juvan. The recently reformed version of the slits features original members ari up and tessa pollit along with new members anna schulte, adele wilson and hollie cook [daughter of sex pistols drummer paul cook]. The album is pressed on limited double vinyl and comes with a full copy of the album on cd inside the sleeve. The album features an updated take on their trademark ramshackle sound of old. Features lots of reggae tinged pop, electro pop, post punk and good time hip shaking rhythms. December 2009-2lp-Narnack-€21.99

St john, powell-On my way to houston-Formerly based in austin texas this folk singer cut his teeth way back in a trio with janis joplin and lanny wiggins called the waller creek boys. He also wrote five tracks for the first two thirteenth floor elevators albums and was a member of the blues rock outfit mother earth with tracy nelson. This new album was recorded in oakland with members of the roky ericksons backing band the aliens. The album features a superb blend of retro garage rock and folk rock sounds, full of laid back blues tinged vibes. Its got hints of the sixties psyche rock sounds of roky erickson with st john injecting lots of older traditional country and blues influences too. December 2009-Cd-Tompkins square-€16.99

Susanna and the magical orchestra-Three [double vinyl with free digital download coupon]-Susanna wallumrod returns with a new album on the rune grammofon label. Backed again by her trusty one man band morten qvenild [in the country] and produced by deathprod [aka helge sten]. The album features eight brand new originals along with two rather stunning covers, the first of which is a haunting take on roy harpers another day followed by a strange take on subdivisions by rush. The album is a beautifully haunting collection of sparse electronic sounds with wallumrods ethereal voice creating the most soothing of atmospheres. There are lots of lush organ like sounds, sparse beats and deep throbbing bass sounds. In fairness though, none of this would matter if it wasnt for wallumrods voice, falling somewhere between kate bush and bjork. One of the most perfect late night albums in quite some time. The album was originally released in september of 2009 on cd and is finally available now on limited edition double vinyl. Comes with a free digital download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. December 2009-2lp-Rune grammofon-€19.99

This immortal coil-The dark age of love-A tribute album dedicated to the sounds of the legendary underground outfit coil. Recorded by a collective of artists working under the name of this immortal coil, a similar idea to the umbrella group on the 4ad label from many years ago called this mortal coil. Rather than asking individual artists to cover their favourite tracks the idea was to get all the artists involved to work together as a unit on the entire project. Members of the collective include yann tiersen, sylvain chauveau, bonnie prince billy, matt elliott, yael naim and christine ott. The album was mixed by oktopus [dalek]. I think the best way to approach this album is to consider it a collection of reinterpretations rather than just a coil tribute album, as the songs have pretty much been adapted by each artist rather than simply trying to cover the originals. Its a beautifully dark hearted collection of sounds [no surprise there then], featuring some truly haunting interpretations particularly from vocalists like matt elliott, will oldham and the truly stunning voice of yael naim. December 2009-Cd-Ici dailleurs-€16.99

December 2009-2lp-Ici dailleurs-€28.99

Twilight sad-Forget the night ahead-Forget the night ahead was produced by bandmember / guitarist andy macfarlane with the assistance of paul savage [deldagos]. The album features lots of guitar heavy post rock sounds blended with some lovely melodic shoegazing tinged indie rock, kind of reminds me a little bit of glasvegas jamming with mogwai. Full of fuzzed up layered guitar sounds akin t0 the mighty my bloody valentine blended with some very catchy melodic indie rock vibes. January 2010-Cd-Fat cat-€12.99

White out-Senso [featuring jim o rourke and thurston moore]-Senso is a live recording from the now defunkt tonic club in new york, recorded at two shows on the 18th of december 2004. Features original white out members lin culbertson and tom surgal, joined by jim o rourke and sonic youths thurston moore. The album features two cds of some of the most extreme noise based avant rock you are likely to hear all year round. Its live and sounds completely improvised, touching on avant garde jazz at times with lots of discordant abrasive drum patterns layered behind all manner of synth based noise effects and distorted guitars giving way to full on feedback noise. December 2009-2cd-Ecstatic peace-€16.99
Wyatt, robert-Radio experiment rome-A collection of previously unreleased material made by robert wyatt for an italian radio programme way back in 1981. As wyatt describes on the sleeve himself, this recording is all about the actual process of an artist working in the studio, rather than a collection of finished and polished songs. The album features either rather abstract almost improvised like pieces of music, the first side featuring three lengthy almost psychedelic like pieces which sees wyatt experiment with lots of multilayed vocals. Its very much one of his most experimental collections, sounding more like a work in progress at times but still a rather fascinating addition to this mans vast collection of recordings. December 2009-Lp-Tracce-€19.99

Zs-Music of the modern white [with bonus digital download coupon]-New york based avant rock outfit featuring sam hillmer on tenon sax, ben greenberg on guitar and ian antonio on drums. The album features two lengthy instrumental workouts, one per side, coming on like some kind of avant garde jazz take on no wave rock. Featuring discordant bursts of machine gun like drum sounds, blasts of high pitched sax and heavily distorted guitar feedback. Try to imagine moondog jamming with lightning bolt. December 2009-Lp-The social registry-€16.99

Ambience affair-Patterns [limited edition pressing with hand printed lyrics book]-The second ep from irish outfit the ambience affair and the long awaited follow up to their stunning fragile things ep from 2009 [now sadly all sold out]. The ambience affair are a dublin based outfit featuring vocalist / guitarist jamie clarke and drummer marc gallagher. This ep features four beautifully constructed mellow indie rock sounds falling somewhere between the kooky sounds of arcade fire and the more expansive alt rock of radiohead. The main track has a lovely kind of euphoric post rock feel about it, full of looping intricate guitar sounds and multilayered vocals. I can also get a bit of a fleet foxes feel from some of the tracks, you know that kind of lovely offbeat alt folk sound. January 2010 - this ep will be shipped out to you on the 23rd of january. The first 20 copies [ie this one] will have a limited edition hand written lyric book with them, signed by the band.-Cd--€6.99

At last an atlas-From which we were raised [released on the 5th of february]-The debut full length release on the slow loris label from dublin based artist at last an atlas. Its pretty much a one man band centred around hollows member greg o brien, with just a little help from some friends. Greg previoulsy released a limited edition split mini album on the slow loris with singer songwriter paul o reilly. This is a truly beautiful collection of intimate downbeat electronic folk like sounds, lots of gentle throbbing beats, lush synth sounds and hushed vocal tones. For some reason his material always reminds of a more stripped down grandaddy, like some late night take on their sound with a bit of elliott smith blended in. Its a beautiful dreamlike collection of intimate electronic pop sounds, it almost reminds me of the kind of thing that you would expect to hear from the morr music label, you know that kind of gentle late night pop sound they specialise in. Gently pulsating electronic folk pop at its very very finest.

The band features sparhawk on vocals / guitars, steve garrington on bass and eric pollard on drums. The album was recorded by eric swanson at sacred heart studios in minnesota. This is very much an album that sees sparhawk let loose with the kind of rock based guitar action the really wouldnt work on any of the recordings with low. This is back to basics guitar based rock music, falling somewhere between the slow core sounds of the likes of the red house painters and some of neil youngs crazy horse vibes. Ive got to admit it great to hear this guy let loose with his guitar on this album, its full of fuzzed up distorted sounds and plenty of heavy riff action.-Cd-Sub pop-€12.99

The band are also aided by the new ideas of fresh additions early harvin and our very own david kitt. And so i watch you from afar-And so i watch you from afar-The debut album from this northern irish based post rock outfit on the smalltown america label. The album features some truly thunderous and rocking post rock sounds coming across like the meeting of don caballero, japanese outfits mono or lite and fellow irishmen the redneck manifesto. Its full of intricate guitar based post rock workouts with plenty of fuzzed up explosive moments. Its mostly an album that concentrates the heavier side of post rock with a total emphasis on the word rock. A total sonic blast of weird time sequences and clever intricate guitar work layered over pounding drum passages. Wonderfully exciting stuff. May 2009-Cd-Smalltown america-€14.99

Animal collective-Strawberry jam-The one thing i most love about animal collective albums is the total challenge they offer up to people like me trying to describe it to you, yes its quite bonkers but in a totally hypnotic and catchy way, take a bit of the beach boys smile and add in some syd barret solo material along with lots of analog synth sounds and most likely hundreds of other sound effects, the album opens up with the truly superb peacebone single which is one of the finest pieces of psychedelic electronic pop you will hear all year round, the band seem to have this very special knack of holding all their sounds together with their beach boys likes vocal harmonies whilst all sorts of madness is looping around in the background, sixties wah wah like guitar sounds do battle with squelchy synths and moments of the out there rock of the flaming lips, this is probably their most accessible album to date so far and fans of the likes of arcade fire etc should really give this one a little spin as you will be very very pleasantly surprised, an early contender for weird album of the year so far, september 2007-Cd-Domino-€11.99

Atlas sound-Logos-Brand new solo album from bradford cox [frontman with deerhunter]. The album follows up his truly excellent solo album let the blind lead those who can see but cannot feel from last year, also on the 4ad label. This one features a little help from panda bear [animal collective] and laetitia sadier [stereolab]. The album features a wonderful collection of psychedelic skewed pop sounds ranging from intimate lo fi sounds to some truly expansive almost euphoric like indie pop. At times comparable to the likes of animal collective, its probably a little more rustic and lo fi though, whilst also dipping into the world of acoustic psyche folk. October 2009-Lp-4ad-€14.99

Barlow, lou-Goodnight unknown [special offer - normally retails at €14.99]-Brand new solo album from the fairly legendary indie rock star lou barlow [sebadoh and dinosaur jr]. Barlow is joined by melvins drummer dale crover and isaad wasif from the yeah yeah yeahs. The album features a collection of mellow almost folk like acoustic sounds along with plenty of his trademark laid back slacker rock sounds. When he rocks out it really does bring me back to the classic early days of sebadoh or pavement with the more mellow solo based tracks more reminiscent of his folk implosion releases. October 2009-Cd-Domino-€12.99

Comanechi-Crime of love-Comanechi is fronted by akiko matsura, she also plays drums with the big pink and sings with pre. The album is a really superb slice of lo fi grunged up indie rock. Its like a big blistering blend of early riot girl sounds, grunge rock and classic lo fi indie garage rock. Its full of fuzzed up guitars, distorted to the max and shouty female vocals. Its one of those classic collections of almost shambolic indie rock meets no wave, both ferocious and melodic at the same time. It kinda reminds me of what nirvana would have sounded like if they recorded bleach with a japanese girl screaming throughout. Pressed on limited editon red vinyl. December 2009-Lp-Merok-€14.99

Department of eagles-In ear park-New project featuring grizzly bear member daniel rossen. Daniel is backed by his friend fred nicolaus plus a bit of help from grizzly bear members chris taylor and chris bear. This is a really catchy and rather eccentric blend of acoustic pastoral pop and pure sunshine psyche pop. There are elements of the beach boys vocal harmonies, the looped repitition of animal collective and the eastern european folk of beirut. The album has a lovely loose kind of rambling feel about it sounding a little like an old fashioned campfire free improv jam all cup up and pasted back together randomly. Its one of those rare albums that really does get beter and better with each listen and should be a must for all fans of animal collective, grizzly bear, beirut and psychedelic pastoral folk. 2008-Cd-4ad-€13.99

Endless boogie-Focus level [comes with a bonus mp3 download coupon]-The debut album from this new york based outfit on the no quarter label. These guys would probably win the most aptly named band of the year if there was such a competition. This album is all about laid back groove laden stoner rock sounds or endless boogie rock. Its full of stoner blues rock, lots of mellow repetitive grooves sounding at times like the stooges on a totally stoned vibe. The band basically throw out some truly classic stoner blues riffs and just see where it takes them from there. The album almost sounds like it was just a long jam, and trust me thats a good thing with this kind of music. Fans of early stoner rock sounds will find it hard to track down a better album this year. Imagine the stones and the stooges jamming together endlessy for hours and hours. Pressed on double vinyl and comes in a heavy card gatefold sleeve with a bonus mp3 download of all tracks. October 2009-2lp-No quarter-€13.99

Feelies, the-The good earth-The feelies second album from 1986 and the follow up to the truly superb debut crazy rhythms, it took them nearly six years to make this second album. The album was co produced by peter buck from rem, a fan since their early days. The album features a somewhat slightly more rootsy rock feel whilst also retaining plenty of the early almost minimalist like post punk / new wave sounds. Its pretty much another perfect collection of early college rock meets rootsy indie rock sounds with lots of jangly indie guitar sounds included. The album now also comes with five bonus tracks which come on a bonus mp3 download coupon inside the sleeve.-Cd-Domino-€12.99

Girls-Album-'Lust for life', the impeccable, '60s-tinged 'laura' and the surf-rock scuzz-fest 'big bad mean motherf**ker'. The slower jams tend to invite comparisons to modern-day big-hitting jamc revivalists like glasvegas, even running along similar lines to jason pierce's gospel-gazing ways on 'hellhole ratrace', while not orbiting too far from joy division's 'atmosphere' on 'lauren marie'-Lp-Fantasy trashcan-€15.99

Hansard, glen and marketa irglova-The swell season-Glen hansard aka singer with the frames has teamed up with czech singer and pianist marketa irglova to make his new solo album on plateau records, the album was recorded and mixed over a 6 day session in prague in december of last year, 10 track ablum on the plateau records label, comes in a foldout card sleeve with lyric sheet, april 2006 - this item is temporarily out of stock, your order will be shipped out to you in 7 to 10 days.-Cd-Plateau records-€9.99

Jerry fish and the mudbug club-The beautiful untrue-Brand new album from irish based songwriter jerry fish. Features the recent single back to before. The album features guest vocals from imelda may and also carol keogh from automata. The album features a lovely laid back collection of jazz, blues and tex mex vibes. The more tex mex like brass led sounds really remind me of some early calexico albums. There are also lots of sleazy jazzed up blues sounds going on calling to mind some kind of slightly more funked up tom waits. May 2009-Cd-The mudbug club-€10.99

Kane, jonathan-Jet ear party [double vinyl]-Jonathan kane was one of the founder members of legendary underground rock outfit swans and this is the second full length solo release from one of the finest drummers around at the moment. Backed again by his live band february. Kane plays guitars, drums and bass throughout with igor cubrilovic joing on guitars, anthony kane on harmonica, david watson on bagpipes, lisa b burns on vocals and peg simone on vocals. The album is a mostly intrumental voyage of dirge like dusty blues sounds as kane takes elements of rootsy americana and throws it into the blender with lots of avant rock vibes. Its not quite blues and its not quite post rock but is truly hypnotic and all rather original too. Double vinly pressing, one of which is black and the other is clear red. Comes in a heavy card gatefold sleeve with colour inner poster. Also comes with a free mp3 download of all the tracks. July 2009-2lp-Table of the elements-€28.99

Mccombs, cass-Catacombs-Baltimore based singer songwriter cass mccombs returns with a stunning new collection on the domino label. Following in from his rather beautiful dropping the writ album from 2008 this is another exceptional collection of superbly crafted laid back alt rock songs. Mccombs is both an astute lyric writter and classy guitar picker. The album has a kind of rootsy feel about it without delving too deep into either country or folk. Quite simply the eleven tracks included are faultless from start to finish both lyrically and in particular with his sublime guitar playing. The album has a somewhat bright kind of breezy feel about it featuring a beautifully sparse production which just allows the songs to speak for themselves. Do your record collection a favour and include this album in it. Pressed on two pieces of heavyweight 180 gram vinyl in a gatefold sleeve with printed inners and lyric sheet. Also comes with a free mp3 download of all tracks on the album. June 2009-2lp-Domino-€13.99

Molina and johnson-Molina and johnson-Jason molina [songs ohia] must be one of the most prolific songwriters around at the moment, its not long since his last album as magnolia electric co and hes back with a new collaboration with will johnson from centr o matic. This is a truly stunning collection of sombre country and folk tinged sounds, beautifully rustic and downbeat. It kind of sounds like molina and johnson simply entered a room together and just played a string of songs live, its got a lovely raw live feel about. Its an album steeped in the sounds of old country and folk but this pair totally strip it down to its bare essentials with a lot of tracks just featuring guitar and piano. The two voices work so well together, both having just the right amount of that classic nashville drawl. An album that will very gently blow you away. November 2009-Cd-Secretly canadian-€9.99

Mumblin deaf ro-Senor my friend-Ten tracks of folk n country guitar picking from dublins very own one man band. February 2003-Cd-Own label-€4.99

Mumblin deaf ro-The herring and the brine-Album number two from mumblin deaf ro aka dublin based songwriter ronan hession, the album features some truly lovely laid back lo fi indie folk sounds, the album is pretty much mostly acoustic based with the majority of tracks just featuring hessions vocals and some really excellent acoustic guitar picking, on the odd track with a full band things sound a little more like a folky take on the sounds of the likes of sebadoh but still retaining a distinctly irish folky sound, the album features some very clever and intricate arrangements but still manages to retain an overall simplicity, this is some really high quality modern irish folk music that should appeal to lovers of acoustic folk sounds along with fans of old school lo fi indie rock, june 2007-Cd-Villain records-€7.99

O neill, lisa-Has an album-Brand new thirteen track debut album from this cavan born singer songwriter. Try to imagine the rustic sixties like folk sounds of joan baez mixed with the quirky avant folk of the joanna newsom. Its an album of perfectly kooky folk meets indie folk pop sounds, full of very catchy and clever acoustic based sounds. October 2009-Cd-Own label-€9.99

O rourke, jim-The visitor-Jim o rourke returns with his first solo collection in eight years. The album sees o rourke in totally solo mood and features just one long instrumental track clocking in at just over 38 minutes. The album is being released pretty much as a sequel to his album bad timing from way back in 1999, particularly as it features some really beautiful lenghty passages of steel strung acoustic guitar arrangements. I have recently seen this album described a modern folk symphony and that phrase really does pin down this albums sound in two simple words. The album does have moments harking back to the work of the great john fahey but o rourke also adds in big washes of lush string sounds along with some truly awesome multitracked acoustic guitar sounds, it almost sounds like there could be ten different guitarists working at the same time. O rourke also throws in some passages of beautifully minimal piano which really adds to the overall orchestral feel to the record. I have to say this album really is best enjoyed in just one sitting and the forty or so minutes really do pass rather quickly. Its been a long wait, but in fairness albums like this dont just happen overnight. October 2009-Lp-Drag city-€15.99

Pastels with tenniscoats-Two sunsets-This is truly a band made in heaven for fans of old school jangly indie pop sounds featuring stephen pastel, alison mitchell and katrina mitchell from the pastels, saya and takashi ueno from japanese indie pop outfit tenniscoats, norman blake and gerard love from teenage fanclub and tom crossley from appendix out. The album was recorded in glasgow whilst the tenniscoats were on tour there. The album features one of our singles of the year so far vivid youth along with eleven other real mellow gems. Its all very quirky and twee in an indie folk kind of way, but lets be honest twee can be good when the right people are making it, and who better than the pastels to spearhead this kind of album. Its probably one of the most perfect collections of laid back indie pop we have heard all year round. September 2009-Lp-Geographic-€13.99

Stevens, sufjan-The bqe-Sufjan stevens presents a film and musical suite exploring new york citys infamous brooklyn queens expressway [what happened to an album for every state]. The album comes packaged as a double disc featuring the original film in widescreen format, the original motion picture soundtrack, a 40 page booklet and a stereoscopic image reel for those of you who still have an old viewmater. The album features 13 classical based pieces ranging from dramatic broadway like showtune sounds to some truly minimal steve reich like movements. The album is performed with a full orchestra and is probably one of the most ambitious albums from a man who always likes to stretch the bounderies. Its quite a classical sounding album but with a certain playfullness about it at the same time. Comes presented in a lovely three part foldout sleeve. October 2009-2cd-Rough trade-€21.99

Twinkranes-Spektrum theatre snakes-The long awaited debut album from this dublin based three piece finally hits the shelves, courtesy of the twisted nerve label. The album was co produced by voice of the seven woods frontman ricky tomlinson. An album i have to admit has totally blown us away here in the shop and a real late contender for our irish album of the year. On first listen this is a real gem for lovers of all things krautrock but its only after repeated listens that the many many layers and sounds really begin to reveal themselves. It is definitely based in the kind of hypnotic repetitive sounds of seventies krautrock but dig deeper and you will hear bits of space rock, prog, pure psychedelia and even the kind of crazed early electronic trickery of the bbc radiophonic workshop. Featuring a truly propulsive rhythm section laying grooves down for some dr who like sound effects, these guys are not afraid to let loose and totally rock out from time to time too. November 2009-Lp-Twisted nerve-€16.99

Vaselines-Enter the vaselines [deluxe edition]-A brand new remastered version of this vaselines retrospective with an added disc of bonus material. Long time fans will most likely have most of the first cd either on the compilation all the stuff and more or the sub pop version the way of the vaselines. The first cd basically features their first two eps for the scottish label 53rd and 3rd along with the album dum dum. The first two eps were son of a gun and dying for it. The second cd comes with tons of demo versions and live tracks. The package comes presented in a lovely foldout card sleeve and features an updated booklet. Its pretty much everything you are going to need from the vaselines who just happen to be one of the finest indie pop / rock bands of all time. November 2009-2cd-Sub pop-€13.99

Whipping boy-Submarine-The debut album from irelands whipping boy, finally available again on cd, this album has been out of print for far too many years, recorded way back in 1991, features 10 cuts of pure raw sounding whipping boy, features safari, beatle, sushi, favourite sister, astronaut blues, bettyclean, buffalo, snow, valentine 69 and submarine, may 2006-Cd-Whipping boy recordings-€13.99

Yo la tengo-Popular songs-The album opens up with a rather choice slice of orchestral driven psycye rock before hitting their more familiar melodic indie rock with some choice vocals from drummer georgia. For me this album really shows off this bands ability to hop between several different genres with such ease, its no surprise they have been making music since 1986. They are probaly one of the last remaining true american indie rock bands, still featuring the same three members after all these years. The album features a bit of everything from pure fuzzed up classic old style indie rock to some beautifully laid back indie pop, backed by an extended 15 minute psyche rock like jam at the end. Its an album that brings me back to an earlier classic which was and then nothing turned itself inside out from 2000 with its blend of darker late night gems and fuzzy indie rock, right down to the lengthy closing tunes. If you split the album into two distinct halves you get nine blasts of classic yo la tengo and then finishing off with 3 beautifully lengthy jam like tunes. Long time fans will definitely have this one in their list of top five yo la tengo albums and if you are new to this band you probably wont find a better way to introduce yourself to one of the very best indie rock bands on the planet at the moment. September 2009-2lp-Matador-€21.99
