Four tet-There is love in you-Kieran hebden returns with his first new full length album in four years and his fifth album as four tet to date. The album features the recent single love cry. This is definitely an album that sees the trademark four tet folktronica sound slowly move towards something more akin to minimal / ambient techno. The beats are somewhat more propulsive on this collection, whilst still beautifully gentle at the same time. Musically this is as good and familiar as the past few four tet albums but there is definitely a gentle shift towards a more ambient techno like vibe. This album also seems to feature a lot less of the acoustic guitar strumming of earlier outings, now replaced with moog like sound effects and lots of vocal sampling. As ever this man makes music that works both on dancefloors and laying on the couch, there are not many you can say that about in this particular genre. January 2010-Cd-Domino-€12.99

Hunter gatherer-I dreamed i was a footstep in the trail of a murderer-The debut album from this irish based electronic solo artist. The album features fifteen slices of beautifully haunting ambient electronic sounds. At times reminiscent to a slightly more downbeat and darker take on the sounds of broadcast with just the odd hint of the aphex twin ambient works collections. Its an album of gentle beats over some beautifully minimal synth and keyboard sounds, almost cinematic in scope at times. Its both haunting and calming at the same time, not many albums you can say that about, with a kind of darkly sombre feel to it. Its one of those perfect late night / headphone albums and further proof of the high quality of electronic music being produced in this country at the moment. This would have to rate as one of the finest of the year so far. December 2009-Cd-Own label-€9.99

Pallett, owen [final fantasy]-Heartland-The artist formerly known as final fantasy returns with his third solo outing to date, he is now recording under his own name due to some stupid legal case taken against him for using the final fantasy name. His first album came out way back in 2005 [has a good home] and was followed by the exceptional second album he poos clouds in 2006. It may be nearly four years since his last album but its fair to say pallett has been busy with other projects in the meantime. Along with touring as a one man band pallett has also provided string arrangements for several bands including grizzly bear, arcade fire, beirut, last shadow puppets and mountain goats. This is his first album to be released on the domino label. This is an album of true orchestral beauty, probably one of the most lush collections your are likely to hear all year round. Known for his superb violin playing this album features what sounds to my ears like a full blown orchestra at times, full of dramatic string and horn bursts. Its an album the flows seamlessy through many genres with such each too. Sometimes you think you could be listening to some modern take on steve reich or phillip glass and before you know it things turn into some kind of indie broadway musical [ala sufjan stevens maybe]. Its highly intricate and joyously catchy at the same time, full of layered string sounds and palletts gentle almost hushed vocal delivery. Its one of those rare albums that comes up with something new each time you listen to it, sometimes classical pop and sometimes just pure classic quirky indie pop. Its got to be said this is something truly original. January 2010-Cd-Domino-€11.99

Beach house-Teen dream [limited edition version with bonus dvd]-Teen dream is the third album from this baltimore based outfit and the long awaited follow up to their stunning album devotion from 2008. The album was recorded in upstate new york in an old converted church called dreamland and was produced by chris coady [he has worked with the likes of tv on the radio, blonde redhead and yeah yeah yeahs]. It may only be january but this is an early contender already for the most beautiful / lush album of the year so far. The album carries on the folky americana themes of devotion and takes them to a whole new level, its a beautifully loose collection of sounds, full of spooky atmospherics which may have something to do with recording in a church. Its a truly amazing meeting of old and new sounds, rustic slide guitar seemlessly blending with the kind of woozy backwards guitars that my bloody valentine would be proud of. Its downbeat, intimate and truly expansive at the same time with an atmosphere that kind of reminds me a wee bit of mazzy star. If you liked devotion then prepared to be totally blown away by this one. Limited edition version comes with a bonus dvd and comes packaged in a card gatefold sleeve with two separate booklets. The dvd features a video for each song on the album, each from a different director. January 2010-2cd-Bella union-€16.99
Chicago underground duo-Boca negra-The chicago underground duo features rob mazurek [exploding star orchestra, isotope 217 and mandarin movie] and chad taylor [fred anderson, iron & wine and marc ribot]. This is their fifth full length release as a duo, they are both also members of the chicago underground collective. This is an album of loose and abstract avant garde jazz sounds with hints of experimental post rock minimalism. Its full of disjointed free flowing drum sounds, blasts of miles davis like brass and minimal almost dirty three like guitar picking. January 2010-Cd-Thrill jockey-€14.99

Fucked up-Couple tracks [singles 2002 to 2009]-A collection of rare and hard to find tracks from fucked up courtesy of the matador label. Most of these tracks were released as limited edition 7 inch vinyls and are long out of print and pretty much impossible to track down now. The album goes back to their no pasaran single on the deranged label in 2002 and ends up with their last single no epiphany single for matador in 2009. Along with all these rare singles the album also features five previously unreleased tracks specially remastered for this release. The album comes complete with detailed liner notes with artwork and info on every single. Quite simply this is some of the finest old school hardcore meets motorhead like rock'n'roll you are likely to ever hear. Probably one of the finest rock bands on the planet at this moment in time. January 2010-2cd-Matador-€13.99
These new puritans-Hidden [with bonus digital download coupon]-These new puritans return with their second album on angular recordings. A much more expansive collection of sounds compared to their first outing with one featuring all manner of strange new instruments including a six foot japanese taiko drums, a thirteen piece brass and woodwind ensemble and also foley sound effect recording techniques. The best way to approach this album is pretty much forget everything you have heard before from these new puritans, this is something very unique and unlike anything they have done before. Its an album of huge scope and ambition, blending so many different influences into one big thunderous collection of all things avant rock. At times its a dark hearted collection of industrial rock sounds complete with heavy synth vibes whilst on other tracks reminiscent of the kind of avant jazz rock of the likes of the soft machine. On other tracks they blend ragga and dancehall like beats with some kind of rock tinged dubstep, throwing lots of arcade fire like group chanting over the top. The brass sounds throughout really add a unique flavour to this album, at times sounding like the bug jamming with an old mining town brass band. You will either love or hate this album but there is no denying its huge scope and ambition. This vinyl version is limited to only 500 copies on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Also comes with a digital download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. January 2010-Lp-Angular recordings-€14.99
Tindersticks-Falling down a mountain-The tindersticks return with their eight studio album, their second to feature their new lineup [hungry saw from 2008 was the first]. The album was recorded over a three month period in two separate studios in belgium and france. The album features the truly stunning voice of mary margaret o hara [its been too long mary, please make another record]. The band are also aided by the new ideas of fresh additions early harvin and our very own david kitt. Its very much a stripped down sound compared to the lush orchestral sounds of their earlier albums of old, if anything, this one features more brass than strings. This album also has a slightly more live like feel about it, a much more loose kind of bright atmosphere prevails. There is still plenty of that late night smokey jazz feel about the album with this one adding lots of sixties like organ sounds. Comes in a lovely card miniature gatefold sleeve with inner booklet featuring lyrics. January 2010-Cd-4ad-€12.99

Brothers movement-The brothers movement-The debut full length album from the brothers movement. Originally hailing from dublin, the band were previously known as mainline and features neil paxton [guitars / vox], conor paxton [bass], danda [guitars / keyboards / vox], scott glennon [guitar] and andy parkes [drums]. The album features some infectiously catchy laid back hazy psyche rock influenced sounds, reminiscent at times of the verve but with much more of a psyche rock thing going on. Its actually kinda like a bit of spacemen 3 blended with the earlier sounds of the verve, drugged up hazy psyche rock with a bit of a funky vibe. Its full of swirling guitar sounds, reverb drenched vocals and maybe just a touch of the stone roses thrown in. January 2010-Cd-Rocket girl-€17.99

Gonjasufi-Kowboyz and indians-The second single to be released by this new signing to the warp label, the debut album will follow shortly. The main track kowboyz and indians will feature on the debut album whilst the b side my only friend is exclusive to this single. The single was produced by gaslamp killer. The track kind of reminds me a bit of that bollywood tinged funky electronic sound of mia. January 2010-7"-Warp-€5.99
Jonny fun and the hesitations-Carpe pm-The debut full length album from jonny fun and the hesitations, featuring nice delicious slices of good time indie pop on their own label. The band is based around english born songwriter jonny fun [now residing here in ireland] and his ever changing backing band the hesitations. On this recording his band are andy walsh, padraig o reilly [yeh deadlies], annie tierney [yeh deadlies] and dave green. Guest vocal harmonies are courtesy of kelly mounsey and jennie redmond. The album features a really lovely almost folk tinged collection of indie pop sounds, a little bit belle and sebastian with the more rustic folk sounds of the likes of king creosote maybe. Its also got a little bit of the jangly indie pop vibe of the likes of orange juice or teenage fanclub with plenty of the kind of twee sounds of the pastels. Very pleasant ear candy indeed. January 2010-Cd-Own label-€9.99
Mi ami-Cut men-Limited edition 12 inch release from mi ami on the thrill jockey label. Comes in a lovely silk screened sleeve and is limited to only 750 copies in total. The ep features two lengthy tracks with out at night on the flip side. The main track, cut men, is a truly superb slice of modern no wave full of howling distorted guitars, tribal like drum sounds and lots of krautrock like electronic synth trickery. Its got leanings towards a more avant garde take on the punk funk sounds, full of tribal like funky rhythms over which they cast the most awesome sonic youth like guitar noise. The flip side is a slightly more sedate affair, full of moog like synth sounds and heaps of almost lee perry like studio reverb action. January 2010-12"-Thrill jockey-€12.99
Pit er pat-The flexible entertainer-Album number four from pit er pat featuring butchy fuego and fay davis-jeffers. Fuego was once a member of neutral milk hotel and has recently been playing drums with the melvins. This is a truly odd collection of sounds, chopping and changing sounds with such regularity that i keep checking to see if somebody has changed the album around when i wasnt looking. At times reminscent of some kind of electro tinged no wave meets the tom tom club, full of funky beats and abstract guitar picking. On other tracks they kind of delve into the more psyche like sounds of animal collective with hints of the hypnotic sounds of konono no 1, strangely enough. January 2010-Cd-Thrill jockey-€12.99

Princeton-Calypso gold-The debut release from princeton on the jodie and victor label. Twin brothers jess and matt kivel grew up on princeton street in santa monica [hence the name] and they are joined by childhood friend ben usen. Its an infectiously catchy piece of african tinged indie pop with a bit of a calypso like pop feel about it too [hence the name]. Everyone we play this track to has a different opinion on it, the most interesting ones being scott walker meets animal collective or divine comedy meets vampire weekend. Simply put this is one hell of a catchy slice of psychedelic indie pop. The flip side features a remix of shout it out by samuel bing from fol chen. January 2010-7"-Jodie and victor-€4.99

Xx, the-Vcr-Another superb single to be taken from their rather superb self titled album from last year on the young turks label. The single comes backed with a brand new track insects on the flip side. The singles comes in a cutout sleeve, similar to the artwork featured on the album. Its a beautifull sexy piece of laid back indie pop / new wave. January 2010-7"-Young turks-€5.99

Ambience affair-Patterns [limited edition pressing with hand printed lyrics book]-The second ep from irish outfit the ambience affair and the long awaited follow up to their stunning fragile things ep from 2009 [now sadly all sold out]. The ambience affair are a dublin based outfit featuring vocalist / guitarist jamie clarke and drummer marc gallagher. This ep features four beautifully constructed mellow indie rock sounds falling somewhere between the kooky sounds of arcade fire and the more expansive alt rock of radiohead. The main track has a lovely kind of euphoric post rock feel about it, full of looping intricate guitar sounds and multilayered vocals. I can also get a bit of a fleet foxes feel from some of the tracks, you know that kind of lovely offbeat alt folk sound. January 2010 - this ep will be shipped out to you on the 23rd of january. The first 20 copies [ie this one] will have a limited edition hand written lyric book with them, signed by the band.-Cd--€6.99
At last an atlas-From which we were raised [with limited bonus cd]-The debut full length release on the slow loris label from dublin based artist at last an atlas. Its pretty much a one man band centred around hollows member greg o brien, with just a little help from some friends. Greg previoulsy released a limited edition split mini album on the slow loris with singer songwriter paul o reilly. This is a truly beautiful collection of intimate downbeat electronic folk like sounds, lots of gentle throbbing beats, lush synth sounds and hushed vocal tones. For some reason his material always reminds of a more stripped down grandaddy, like some late night take on their sound with a bit of elliott smith blended in. Its a beautiful dreamlike collection of intimate electronic pop sounds, it almost reminds me of the kind of thing that you would expect to hear from the morr music label, you know that kind of gentle late night pop sound they specialise in. Gently pulsating electronic folk pop at its very very finest.
order this album before the 5th of february and get a very very limited edition free four track bonus cd. Only the first 100 copies will come with a bonus cd so get your orders in quick. The bonus will come in a handmade screen printed sleeve and features four exclusive tracks recorded specially for this release. The releases on this label are always a thing of real personal beauty, those still trying to track down the awesome wagtail original sleeve will testify to that. Dont say you havent been warned this time.
this album will be released on the 5th of february and your order will ship out to you on that date.-2cd-Slow loris-€9.99
Beach house-Teen dream [released on the 22nd of january]-Teen dream is the third album from this baltimore based outfit and the long awaited follow up to their stunning album devotion from 2008. If you liked devotion then prepared to be totally blown away by this one.-Cd-Bella union-€13.99

Retribution gospel choir-2 [released on the 29th of january]-Album number from this rock outfit fronted by alan sparhawk [guitarist / singer with low]. Its the follow up to their self titled debut which came out in 2008 and thieir first for the sub pop label. The band features sparhawk on vocals / guitars, steve garrington on bass and eric pollard on drums. The album was recorded by eric swanson at sacred heart studios in minnesota. This is very much an album that sees sparhawk let loose with the kind of rock based guitar action the really wouldnt work on any of the recordings with low. This is back to basics guitar based rock music, falling somewhere between the slow core sounds of the likes of the red house painters and some of neil youngs crazy horse vibes. Ive got to admit it great to hear this guy let loose with his guitar on this album, its full of fuzzed up distorted sounds and plenty of heavy riff action.-Cd-Sub pop-€12.99

Animal collective-Merriweather post pavillion-Brand new album from animal collective, now on the domino record label.-Cd-Domino-€10.99
Bionic rats, the-Return of the bionic rats-The bionic rats are a new seven piece ska / reggae outfit based here in dublin and featuring members from as far afield as nigeria and armenia. The band formed from the ashes of reggae outfit kingsativa, they feature the former drummer, bass player and guitarist. The album features twelve slices of laid back reggae and ska sounds. August 2009-Cd-Own label-€9.99
Camera obscura-My maudlin career-The return of one of the finest indie pop acts to come out of glasgow in years and one of our all time favourite bands around here in road. The album features eleven orchestral soaked gems with lots of americana and country roots at their core. The old familiar indie pop motown vibe is still here aplenty too. The album was recorded in stockholm complete with full orchestra so there are swirling strings all over this one giving the album a much more full sound compared to previous outings. Its going to be one of those summer soundtrack albums whenever the sun starts to shine around here. Try to imagine an indie pop version of the supremes with added slide guitar and the odd laid back country moment. Pure underground pop bliss. April 2009-Cd-4ad-€10.99
Cold cave-Love comes close-Matador reissue the debut album by cold cave, the first pressings on the heartworm label and long sold out now. The band features wesley eisold, caralee mcelroy [ex xiu xiu], dominick fernow [prurient] and sarah lipstate [parts and labor]. The album features a big throbbing selection of dark wave like electro sounds with plenty of nods towards the gothic like rumblings of joy division, the cure and even very early new order. Its full of darkly sombre synth led sounds, maybe with a touch of early depeche mode in there somewhere. November 2009-Cd-Matador-€11.99
Crowley, adrian-Season of the sparks-The return of irish songwriter adrian crowley and the follow up to the stunning long distance swimmer album. The album was produced by stephen shannon and features guest spots from kevin murphy on cello, jarja gaynor on viola, thomas haugh on drums, emma smith on violin, cillian macdonnell on drums and arrangements from london based duo geese. Its a beautiful collection of laid back folky based sounds with some truly haunting pastoral string sounds and luscious church organs. Its perfect late night headphone music with touches of the modern folk sounds of james yorkston, the slow core of low and even the odd hint of leonard cohen. Its like honey for your ears. The album was released earlier this year on the tin angel label and now comes reissued on the ever reliable scottish label chemikal underground. November 2009-Cd-Chemikal underground-€10.99
Dirty projectors-Bitte orca-The return of the dave longstreth fronted dirty projectors and their first new collection since their black flag covers album from 2007. Its an album of all original material and a somewhat more streamlined immediate sound too. This is an album of quirky sunshine pop sounds that may not particularly sound like either animal collective or grizzly bear but will definitely appeal to fans of both. Its psychedelic pop with hints of african guitar, hip hop beats, seventies soul, indie pop and pure prog pop. Its incredibly catchy and challenging at the same time with lots of soulful r n b like vocal sounds layered over fuzzy guitar breaks and disjointed almost jazz like drum patterns. You cant dance to it but you will be humming the songs all day long. Utterly addictive stuff and well worth a listen. June 2009-Cd-Domino records-€10.99
Girls-Album-'Lust for life', the impeccable, '60s-tinged 'laura' and the surf-rock scuzz-fest 'big bad mean motherf**ker'. The slower jams tend to invite comparisons to modern-day big-hitting jamc revivalists like glasvegas, even running along similar lines to jason pierce's gospel-gazing ways on 'hellhole ratrace', while not orbiting too far from joy division's 'atmosphere' on 'lauren marie'-Cd-Fantasy trashcan-€10.99
Grizzly bear-Veckatimest-Grizzly bear return with a truly stunning new album on the warp label. These guys have been hinting at greatness for quite a while now but this new album reaches a whole new level altogether. The album really benefits for a truly lush production and the addition of big orchestral sounds. They are still a band that vocally remind me of the summer pop sounds of the beach boys but there the comparisons end. Featuring lots of quirky and infectiously catchy laid back pop songs with lots of electric piano and sixties like guitar sounds. Its one of those albums with some many layers that each listen delivers a totally different experience. If a bit of sixties tinged indie pop and four part vocal harmonies are your thing then this could be an early contender for album of the year. May 2009-Cd-Warp-€10.99
O rourke, jim-The visitor-Jim o rourke returns with his first solo collection in eight years. The album sees o rourke in totally solo mood and features just one long instrumental track clocking in at just over 38 minutes. The album is being released pretty much as a sequel to his album bad timing from way back in 1999, particularly as it features some really beautiful lenghty passages of steel strung acoustic guitar arrangements. I have recently seen this album described a modern folk symphony and that phrase really does pin down this albums sound in two simple words. The album does have moments harking back to the work of the great john fahey but o rourke also adds in big washes of lush string sounds along with some truly awesome multitracked acoustic guitar sounds, it almost sounds like there could be ten different guitarists working at the same time. O rourke also throws in some passages of beautifully minimal piano which really adds to the overall orchestral feel to the record. I have to say this album really is best enjoyed in just one sitting and the forty or so minutes really do pass rather quickly. Its been a long wait, but in fairness albums like this dont just happen overnight. August 2009-Cd-Drag city-€12.99
Oneida-Rated o [triple cd]-New york based psyche rock outfit return with the second part of their truly awesome thank you parents triptych of releases. The first part the experimental preteen weaponry came out last year on the jag jaguwar label also. This album is a veritable trip through the many different forms of psyche and space rock with so many twists and turns along the way its hard to keep up. The album rather strangely opens up with a slice of pounding scuzzed up techno coming across like the bug with fuzzed up guitars. The following few tracks are simply some of the most sublime kind of stoner psyche rock you are likely to hear all year, dare i say sounding like early hawkwind on even stronger drugs. Its full of pounding almost tribal like drum sounds, scuzzy analog synths and totally fuzzed to the max guitars. Thats just the first of 3 cds now. The second cd is much more straight ahead pounding krautrock like influenced psychedelic rock with more emphasis on the guitar led side of things with lots of heavy stoner rock tangents. The last of the three cds features some truly epic psychedelic rock sounds packed with hypnotic wailing guitars doing battle with squelchy analog synths. This truly is one hell of a mind blowing aural experience, maybe not to everybodys taste but if you want to head off on a totally psychedelic noise experience for an hour or two then you wont find better than oneida for meeting your needs. Comes in a lovely three part foldout sleeve. July 2009-3cd-Jag jaguwar-€10.99
Pastels with tenniscoats-Two sunsets-This is truly a band made in heaven for fans of old school jangly indie pop sounds featuring stephen pastel, alison mitchell and katrina mitchell from the pastels, saya and takashi ueno from japanese indie pop outfit tenniscoats, norman blake and gerard love from teenage fanclub and tom crossley from appendix out. The album was recorded in glasgow whilst the tenniscoats were on tour there. The album features one of our singles of the year so far vivid youth along with eleven other real mellow gems. Its all very quirky and twee in an indie folk kind of way, but lets be honest twee can be good when the right people are making it, and who better than the pastels to spearhead this kind of album. Its probably one of the most perfect collections of laid back indie pop we have heard all year round. September 2009-Cd-Geographic-€10.99
Roberts, alasdair-Spoils-Appendix out frontman returns with a superb new collection on the drag city label. Roberts has enlisted fellow appencix out members tom crossly and gareth eggie to assist on the album along with baroque guitarist gordon ferries, percussionist alex nielson, niko matti ahti from finnish outfit kiila and concerto calendonia members david mcguinness and alison mcgillivray. Its an album of beautifully intimate and rustic folk songs with lots of traditional instrumentation. Fans of the fence collective label or the likes of king creosote, bonnie prince and james yorkston will simply adore this one. May 2009-Cd-Drag city-€12.99
Sonic youth-The eternal-Having spent years on the geffen label sonic youth return to their indie roots with a new album for the matador label. Produced by john agnello and now featuring ex pavement bass player mark ibold. The album also features artwork by the late great guitarist john fahey. This is definitely an album that will bring much joy to fans of goo and dirty period sonic youth. Its very much a collection of shorter more immediate tracks featuring a host of uptempo grunge like avant rock sounds. To me sonic youth have always been a band with two very distinctive sounds with their earlier albums featuring lots of long rambling avant rock and their later material featuring a more immediate rock sound. The closing ten minute track is the only thing to evoke the sounds of evol or sister whilst the majority of the rest of the album is sonic youth at their grunge rock best. Its a sound very distinctive to sonic youth and within seconds of the opening track you know exactly who you are listening to. They may be getting on in years but when it comes to cutting edge alternative american rock there are not many people that can do it aswell as sonic youth. Its easily up there with goo or dirty as classic sonic youth. Comes in a card gatefold sleeve. June 2009-Cd-Matador-€10.99
St vincent-Actor-St vincent is annie clark from tulsa and along with being a member of the polyphonic spree in the past she is also a member of sufjan stevens touring band, this is her second solo album under the st vincent moniker and her first for the 4ad label. Her band on this album features guest spots from mckenzie smith and paul alexander from midlake. The album is another super collection of kooky off kilter indie pop sounds with hints of bjork, kate bush, chamber pop, scuzzy indie rock, piano led ballads and string led cinematic sounds. The album features lots of orchestral backing tracks as clark then weaves her multitracked voice in and out with totally dramatic effect. Its one of those rare little gems that just impossible to pigeonhole into any particular genre so take my advice and have a listen. May 2009-Cd-4ad-€10.99
Tune yards-Bird brains-The debut album from tune yards, released on the 4ad label. Merrill garbus is a native of new england and the album was recorded by herself using a digital voice recorder and shared computer software. The album jumps between blues, african, reggae and lo fi folk at the drop of a hat. Its a real schizophrenic and totally fun filled collection of intricate and somewhat ramshackle sounds. At times it sounds like it could be some long lost recording from alan lomax full of rustic campfire folk influences before chunky casio beats totally modernize everything. There is a lovely freeflowing atmosphere about the record, really sounds like somebody having a lot of fun in the studio. November 2009-Cd-4ad-€12.99
Twinkranes-Spektrum theatre snakes [special offer, normally retails at €16.99]-The long awaited debut album from this dublin based three piece finally hits the shelves, courtesy of the twisted nerve label. The album was co produced by voice of the seven woods frontman ricky tomlinson. An album i have to admit has totally blown us away here in the shop and a real late contender for our irish album of the year. On first listen this is a real gem for lovers of all things krautrock but its only after repeated listens that the many many layers and sounds really begin to reveal themselves. It is definitely based in the kind of hypnotic repetitive sounds of seventies krautrock but dig deeper and you will hear bits of space rock, prog, pure psychedelia and even the kind of crazed early electronic trickery of the bbc radiophonic workshop. Featuring a truly propulsive rhythm section laying grooves down for some dr who like sound effects, these guys are not afraid to let loose and totally rock out from time to time too. November 2009-Cd-Twisted nerve-€13.99
Volcano choir-Unmap [featuring bon iver]-Volcano choir is a brand new collaborative project between justin vernon [aka bon iver] and the collection of colonies of bees. This is their debut release for the jag jaguwar label. Bon iver fans should be warned this is a very different collection of sounds compared to his solo release for emma. This is a collection of almost psyche folk based sounds with heaps of added electronic tinkering, coming across like animal collective in a more folky mood. The album features some beautifully abstract almost ambient like passages reminiscent of fennesz meets a bit of four tet. September 2009-Cd-Jagjaguar-€10.99
Xx, the-Xx-The debut album from this young english based outfit on the xl offshoot label young turks. Its an album of both forward thinking and retro sounding tunes taking its lead from late eighties new wave and totally modernising the sound. Featuring lots of 4ad like shimmering reverb laden guitar sounds, almost four tet like beats, new wave synth sounds, heavily textured electronica and sultry laid back indie pop sounds. Its a fairly tricky one to pin down as its neither new wave nor indie pop, its full of chunky electronic beats which give it a totally modern and quite original twist. Kind of like a less intimate postal service but with lots of added guitars and a dark somewhat gothic like edge. Its definitely one that will appeal to lovers of the old 4ad sound and also the more modern electronic pop vibes of the morr music label. Its one of those albums that just grows on you with each listen. Comes in a lovely cutout card digipack sleeve. August 2009-Cd-Young turks-€12.99
