Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.
The weeks seem to be flying by at the moment, hard to believe its March already, I have to stop telling people about albums that are coming out at the start of March, no wonder they look at me blankly.
It’s a new month so we have to pick a new album of the month, there have been a few contenders with Pavement coming closest but we decided to implement a new rule that the albums have to be brand new to be included. So apologies to Pavement [if you are reading this] but we did give you our album of the week instead. So this month we have gone for the truly beautiful new album from The Besnard Lakes, there is a full review below but we think you will love it. As a very special bonus to our album of the month subscribers we also have a bonus four track digital ep to give away with the cd, if you want to subscribe in the next week you will also receive this and an added extra bonus ten track cd sampler from our nice friends at the Out On A Limb label. The cd features five old tracks and five exclusive new recordings and comes in a personalised album of the month club sleeve, trust me you won’t find these anywhere else.
The Archie Bronson Outfit album has just arrived in today on vinyl, it comes pressed on heavyweight yellow vinyl and also features a digital download coupon [this is limited to only 500 copies].
Some nice new titles from the No Quarter label this week from Burning Star Core and also from Coconuts. Both Burning Star Core and Coconuts cds are only €10.99 for this week.
The Errors album “Come Down With Me” is now in stock on vinyl, limited to only 300 copies on Mogwai’s Rock Action label.
Gonjasufi is a brand new artist on the Warp label and his new album is on special this week for only €13.99 on cd and double lp.
The Kissaway Trail album is now in stock on the Bella Union label.
Fionn Regan has finally released his new album this week.
The new Tunng album is now in stock on vinyl and if you hurry up you will also get a bonus remix cd included.
The new White Hinterland album is well worth checking out if you get a chance, its on the Dead Oceans label and is on special offer this week for only €11.99 on cd and €13.99 on vinyl.
New Irish titles this week from George Worrall, John Shelly & The Creatures and a double cd compilation from Dun Laoghaire College of Further Education [DCFE]
The Soul Jazz reissue of the Tribe Records anthology is quite beautifully packaged, only €14.99 on both cd and double lp.
Oh yeah, I nearly forgot my list of vinyl albums that come with digital download coupons – Archie Bronson Outfit, Besnard Lakes, Burning Star Core and White Hinterland.
Congratulations to Adrian Crowley for winning the Choice Music prize this week, not just a talented songwriter but a real gent too.
That’s it from me for another week, see you next week when we should have some news on some Record Store Day exclusives coming out on the 17th of April. We should also be taking orders for the upcoming Redneck Manifesto album on the website early next week, this one is coming on cd and vinyl.
Adios !

Pavement-Quarantine the past [the best of pavement]-To longtime pavement fans a best of this band would include pretty much everything in their back catalogue, so the band have made your job easier by selecting their own personal favourite tracks for this wonderful 23 track collection. The band have recently returned from long time hibernation and are about to embark on a long awaited reunion tour. All the tracks for this new collection have been lovingly remastered and are all chosen by the band themselves. The album features a collection of classic singles, album tracks, early tracks and one rare obscure compilation track. These guys need little by way of introduction from me, but suffice to say they are quite possible one of the best [and most influential] indie rock bands to ever walk this planet. The full tracklisting for the album is gold soundz, frontwards, mellow jazz docent, stereo, in the mouth a desert, two states, cut your hair, shady lane / j vs s, here, unfair, grounded, summer babe [winter version], range life, date [w ikea], debris slide, shoot the singer [1 sick verse], spit on a stranger, heaven is a truck, trigger cut / wounded kite at 17, embassy row, box elder, unseen power of the picket fence and fight this generation. Besnard lakes-The besnard lakes are the roaring night-The besnard lakes finally return after a three year hiatus with the long awaited follow up to the besnard lakes are the dark horse. The band were originally formed in 2001 by montreal based husband and wife pairing jace lasek and olga goreas, they released their previous album on the jag jaguwar label aswell, their first collection [volume one] was on the english label earworm way back in 2005. This is an album of true epic beauty sounding at times like a more rootsy rock take on shoegazing fronted by the beach boys. Its has to be said straight away though, that there is much more going on here than just a few simple comparisons, this is an album of truly expansive sounds. In fact, i cant think of many albums that make me think of fleetwood mac and my bloody valentine at the same time. Its got hints of seventies rock, both of the rootsy variety [ala neil young] and the more melodic [dare is say elo] with plenty of hefty guitar solo workouts thrown in. What this pair do though is take all those ingredients and make something both retro and totally original sounding, utterly infectious at times whilst also not afraid to rock out too. There are also moments that remind me of the blissful intimacy of the likes of mazzy star or even low with lots of hazy reverb drenched guitar sounds. They have hinted at greatness with the previous two albums but i really think they have achieved it with this new collection. March 2010-Cd-Jag jaguwar-€11.99

Archie bronson outfit-Coconut [with bonus dvd and mp3 download]-The archie bronson outfit return with their first new album since derdang derdang from 2006 [also on domino records]. The album was recorded in london and benton harbour in michigan with production by tim goldsworthy [dfa]. This is a truly superb slice of modern psychedelic garage pop / rock from this much underated english three piece. The band come across like some updated version of a long lost late sixties psychedelic pop band, full of wah wah laden guitar sounds and all manner of weird sound effects. At its heart is a collection totally infectious rock songs, one or two even bordering on something akin to psychedelic punk funk. The album is just full of short sharp blasts of guitar heavy psyche pop, managing to be both totally retro and highly original at the same time. Try to imagine some totally fuzzed up new wave take on the sounds of the late sixties with a little bit of early punk rock and a hint of bluesy swamp rock thrown in. Features ten songs clocking in at 40 minutes, this is probably one of their most direct albums to date. This limited edition version will come with a free bonus dvd featuring videos for every track on the album, most of them made by the band and some by artist friends and collaborators. The album is pressed on yellow vinyl and is limited to only 500 copies in total. Comes with a bonus mp3 download coupon included inside the sleeve too. March 2010-Lp-Domino-€16.99

Coconuts-Coconuts-The debut album from this australian three piece on the no quarter label. The band features jordan redaelli, tim evans and daniel mitha, the album was recorded / mixed by mike fellows in new york. The album features a collection of darkly gothic like sounds, haunting blues dirges and throbbing avant rock. There are definitely elements of the doom like vibes of fellow australians the birthday party and also the likes of swans. The album features five lengthy slices of gothic blues like dirges, its full of haunting dark sounds drenched in reverb with lots of feedback driven guitar effects. At times it even sounds a bit like early sonic youth, maybe just a bit more sparse though. Its all very trance like with an almost tribal like feel about it. March 2010-Cd-No quarter-€10.99
Errors-Come down with me [limited to 300 copies]-Album number two from this epic post rock meets funky electronica outfit signed to the rock action label [run by mogwai]. Its an album of intricate post rock blended with lots of funky beats and lush synth vibes. Sounding at times like battles jamming with either daft punk or the chemical brothers with a bit of air thrown in for good measure. There are still plenty of those mogwai like guitar led moments on the album but this one definitely adds much more of an electro like feel, its almost like some updated post rock take on the space rock sounds of the late seventies. The album is limited to only 300 copies on vinyl and comes in a gatefold sleeve. March 2010-Lp-Rock action-€15.99
Gonjasufi-A sufi and a killer-The debut album from brand new artist gonjasufi on the warp label. Backed by a trio of the west coasts most renowned producers [namely mainframe, flying lotus and the gaslamp killer]. The album features a rather strange and new sounding almost psychedelic take on underground hip hop. At times it sounds like some long lost early seventies psyche folk record, full of middle eastern pop influences before gentle hip hop beats take control. Its probably an album that owes much to the producers too, its full of cleverly worked samples and looped sound effects. With a total of 19 tracks included this one plays more like a compilation of different artists at times, there are even some heavy guitar based tunes in here. Warp seem to always unearth these eclectic genre hopping artists with such ease, no other label does this kind of thing as well. March 2010-Cd-Warp-€13.99

Knife, the-Tomorrow in a year [double cd]-Brand new album from swedish outfit the knife, an opera based on the life of charles darwin. The music was made for the opera tomorrow in a year, commissioned by the danish performance group hotel pro forma. The album is based on the charles darwin book on the origin of the species. The album features a studio version of the opera, with some slight differences and variations on the original live score. The vocals are all handled by mezzo soprano kristina wahlin bomme, actor laerke bo winther and pop singer jonathan johanson. The piece was written in collaboration with mt sims and planningtorock. I must admit opera is not really my forte but this one here sounds nothing like opera of old. I suppose it would have to fall much more in to the modern avant garde side of opera music with lots of ambient electronic passages and moments of downbeat techno. Pressed on double cd with foldout poster booklet and comes in a three part foldout card sleeve.-2cd-Brille-€14.99

New young pony club-The optimist-The second album from this giddy young indie pop outfit. The album this time was completely self produced and also self released. Features the most recent singles chaos and lost a girl. Its got all the ingredients of the first album with an added maturity about the sounds. Its still got plenty of uptempo electro pop sounds, punk funk and new wave but there is something a bit more complex about the overall fell. Its got a bit of that minimal disco vibes of bands of old like esg with the kind of heavy electro of ladytron. March 2010-Cd-The numbers-€13.99

Tunng-And then we saw land [with bonus remix cd]-Brand new album from tunng on the full time hobby label, features the most recent single hustle. This is probably one of their most uptempo and freeflowing albums to date. Its got a much bigger kind of feel about it, still distinctly folk like at times but the scope of sounds on this one really is something new for tunng. As mentioned it is still an album deeply rooted in folk music, both english and american with plenty of laptop electronic trickery still going on too. This album does sound more like a full band effort compared to some of the more intimate previous collections, its almost folk pop like from time to time with the odd moment of something akin to choral folk. The album will come packaged with a bonus limited edition remix cd, exclusive to indie retailers like ourselves [only 1000 copies available in total]. March 2010-Lp-Full time hobby-€14.99
White hinterland-Kairos-The second full length album from this outfit fronted by songwriter casey dienel, her previous album phylactery factory came out in 2008 on the dead oceans label aswell. This time she is joined by alexis gideon and shawn w creedon, both adding a much more electronic feel to this collection. The previous collection was a much more haunting folky based affair but this one delves more into a kind of dubby electronic sound, her voice is still the one ingredient that makes the album special though. It almost has a kind of dubby electro pop feel about it, probably best described as ambient synth pop maybe. Its beautifully sparse, haunting and ethereal. March 2010-Cd-Dead oceans-€11.99

John, shelly and the creatures-Dinosaur-The debut album from this belfast based outfit on the jsc label. John shelley and the creatures are a four piece outfit featuring kev carlisle, phil d'alton, ger gormley and walter thee goon. The album features a collection of melodic and very catchy alt rock sounds ranging from rootsy rock tinged ballads to some truly rocking indie vibes. Its got a lovely folky pop kind of feel about it from time to time. At time reminscent to the likes of the pixies or sugar with the quieter tunes reminding me of belle and sebastian [just a bit]. Comes in a three part foldout card sleeve. March 2010-Cd-Jsc-€12.99
Kissaway trail-Sleep mountain-The second album on the bella union label from this danish five piece. The album features a collection of infectiously catchy and very clever indie rock sounds. At times sounding a bit like arcade fire jamming with the flaming lips, its got a lovely psychedelic kind of vibe about full of totally euphoric guitar based indie rock. There is something beautifully uplifting about the album, could be something to do with all five members singing on most of the tracks. March 2010-Cd-Bella union-€17.99

March 2010-Cd-Domino-€13.99
Regan, fionn-The shadow of an empire-The second album from irish singer songwriter fionn regan and the long awaited follow up to the end of history from 2007. The album was pretty much recorded and produced by regan himself this time, recorded at his own studios in wicklow. Its a slightly more robust rootsy rock kind of album compared to his folky debut, it pretty much features a full band throughout giving the album a more full sound overall. Its the kind of thing that falls somewhere between dylans early foray into electric folk and the rootsy americana of ryan adams. March 2010-Cd-Heave ho-€13.99

Worrall, george-Action not progress-Eleven track debut album from this irish folk / blues singer songwriter, released on his own label. The album features eleven beautifully sparse traditional sounding folk / blues songs. Its almost like a mix of the traditional sounds of robert johnson and the more minimal vibes of someone like john fahey. There is a beautiful sparse kind of atmosphere about the album, its pretty much just one man and his guitar throughout. March 2010-Cd-Own label-€5.99

Callahan, bill-Rough travel for a rare thing [this album is released on the 12th of march]-Limited edition vinyl only release from bill callahan [aka smog]. The album is limited to only 500 copies on vinyl, there will be no cd release of this album. Its a double vinyl pressing and features live versions of our anniversary, diamond dancer, bowery, held, say valley maker, in the pines, cold blooded old times, rock bottom riser, let me see the colts, the well and bathysphere. The album was recorded live in melbourne in november of 2007 and features some gems from the smog back catalogue along with a few from his solo album woke in a whaleheart.-Lp-Sea note-€17.99
Long, vyvienne-Caterpillar sarabande [this album is released on the 12th of march]-Finally the debut full length album from irish singer / cellist vyvienne long. The much awaited follow up to her mini album birdtalk from 2006. The album features twelve brand new tracks including the by now famous track happy thoughts [featured on a recent tv advert]. Before going solo vyvienne is probably best known for her work with damien rice [both in the studio and live]. She seems to have been born with talent oozing from every finger, add that to the voice of an angel and you have one very very talented individual. She is probably best known for her cello work but she is also a mean piano player as you will her on several track on the album. The album features a truly beautiful mix of sultry chamber pop, kooky folk and string led laid back summery pop sounds. There are elements of the kind of kooky pop of the likes of either kate bush or bjork but this woman does have her own distinctive take on this kind of string led pop vibe. Its beautifully dramatic at times with extra added strings just adding to the overall orchestral feel to the album. Its definitely something a bit different to the general singer songwriter sound and a real understated gem it is too. The album comes superbly packaged in a lovely heavy card gatefold sleeve. - special preorder price, the album will normally retail at €18.99-Cd-Vivs music-€14.99

Beach house-Teen dream-Teen dream is the third album from this baltimore based outfit and the long awaited follow up to their stunning album devotion from 2008. The album was recorded in upstate new york in an old converted church called dreamland and was produced by chris coady [he has worked with the likes of tv on the radio, blonde redhead and yeah yeah yeahs]. It may only be january but this is an early contender already for the most beautiful / lush album of the year so far. The album carries on the folky americana themes of devotion and takes them to a whole new level, its a beautifully loose collection of sounds, full of spooky atmospherics which may have something to do with recording in a church. Its a truly amazing meeting of old and new sounds, rustic slide guitar seemlessly blending with the kind of woozy backwards guitars that my bloody valentine would be proud of. Its downbeat, intimate and truly expansive at the same time with an atmosphere that kind of reminds me a wee bit of mazzy star. If you liked devotion then prepared to be totally blown away by this one. January 2010-Cd-Bella union-€17.99

Benson, brendan-My old familiar friend-Brendan benson takes some time out from the ranconteurs to release his fourth solo album. The album features another fine collection of guitar based alt rock / pop sounds with lots of his trademark almost retro like rootsy rock influences. At times benson delves into the psychedelic world of sixties pop sounds coming on like some jangly pop take on the byrds crossed with the beatles. Its got to be said this man really does know how to write an infectiously catchy rock song, the album is packed with catchy hooks and memorable singalong choruses. August 2009-Cd-V2-€13.99
Florence and the machine-Lungs-The debut album from florence welch on the island label. The album features a trio of producers with paul epworth, steve mackay and james ford from simian mobile disco all chipping in along the way. Its an album of truly kooky pop soujnds with plenty of fuzzed up indie rock influences. Imagine kate bush with a bit of the raw edge of early pj harvey, the kookiness of bjork and the piano led angry balladry of kate nash. Its got a bit of a sleazy kind of bluesy edge to it from time to time calling to mind some of the earlier white stripes albums. July 2009-Cd-Island-€11.99

Lovers of funky electro pop will love this as will fans of top quality new wave and indie pop. June 2008-Cd-V2-€13.99
Johnston, daniel-Yip jump music-Originally released way back in 1983 this is long considered to be johnstons first proper full length release. One of the finest collections of lo fi outsider music evern recorded. August 2009-Cd-Feraltone-€12.99

A collection of highly hypnotic modern pop sounds. 2009-Cd-Smalltown supersounds-€12.99
Low anthem-Oh my god charlie darwin-The second full length album from the low anthem and their first for their new label bella union. The album features a rather beautiful collection of laid back rootsy folk sounds and the odd bit of full on barroom rootsy rock n roll. Its a hauntingly intimate collection of mostly acoustic based sounds with some lovely slide guitar and fiddle action. The album has a lovely rustic feel about it with some gentle country vibes comparable to the likes of whiskeytown and the alt country scene that followed them. Its also got hints of the likes of red house painters, my morning jacket and even elliott smith. Its one of those rare quiet gems thats both perfectly sombre and strangely uplifting at the same time. Comes in a lovely card gatefold sleeve. June 2009-Cd-Bella union-€13.99
May, imelda-Love tattoo [special irish only double cd version]-The debut album from this irish born rockabilly singer on the ambassador records label. The album features ten self penned tracks along with covers of wild about my lovin and its your voodoo working. This is some classic old school fifties rockabilly peppered with lots of early jazzy influences. Sounding a bit like wanda jackson fronting bill haleys band with just the odd hint of fourties jazz and some lovely sleazy burlesque influences. Features some totally rocking sounds along with the odd bit of late night jazz. This new version is an exclusive irish only release. Comes with a limited edition eight track live album.-Cd-Blue thumb records-€12.99
Midlake-The courage of others [limited 180 gram vinyl]-Midlake return with their first new full length album since the trial of van occupanther back in 2006. Its their third album to date and a darker more slow affair compared to their last outing [also on the bella union label]. The band features regular members tim smith, eric pulido, eric nichelson, paul alexander and mckenzie. Joining them on the album are stephanie dosen on vocals, max townsley on guitar, jesse chandler on harpsichord and fiona brice on violin. This is definitely an album that owes a fair bit to both the english psychedelic folk sound of the seventies and late sixties woodstock era folk rock thing. Its an album of both early folk / country rock and classic psychedelic folk. Its full of beautifully mellow, laid back hazy folk sounds with a lovely kind of loose campfire feel about it. There is also still plenty of that neil young like vibe carried on from their last outing, its a perfect blend of electric and acoustic sounds. I think long time fans will simply adore this one and they may well have won over a few new fans, particularly those who like their alt folk and rootsy americana. Limited edition 180 gram vinyl pressing. January 2010-Lp-Bella union-€20.99
Orchestre poly-rythmo de cotonou-Echos hypnotiques volume two [from the vaults of albarika store 1969 to 1979]-The second in a series of truly stunning recordings from this soul / funk collective from benin in africa. Released on the archive based analog africa label the album features an truly awesome collection of sounds from one of benins finest hidden secrets. Blending traditional vodoun rhythms to funk, salsa, soul and afro-beat. Sounds a little like some heavenly meeting of fela kuti, james brown and funkadelic. Its the most hypnotic kind of african soul / funk you are ever likely to hear featuring some truly stunning guitar interplay and sweet soul vocals. Complete with several brass and persussion members this is big band funk / soul at its very very finest. The album comes packaged in a deluxe card box with a massive 44 page full colour book featuring detailed liner notes and plenty of cool photos from the seventies. 2009-Cd-Analog africa-€18.99
Phoenix-Wolfgang amadeus phoenix-The return of this ultra cool and highly sophisticated french pop outfit with their new album on the v2 label. Its another fine collection of seventies tinged guitar pop sounds. Its damn near impossible not to get sucked in by these guys with their hook laden guitar pop coming across at times like some space rock take on the likes of elo mixed with the slightly glam pop sounds of some roxy music tunes. Its totally hip shaking and very clever at the same time without ever getting too cheesy. June 2009-Cd-V2-€13.99
Soft pack-The soft pack-The debut album from this san diego based garage rock outfit formerly known as the muslims. The album features ten short sharp blasts of old school garage rock meets the early punk rock sounds of the seventies. Its full of fuzzed up and extremely catchy punk pop sounds, imagine the modern lovers fronted by iggy pop on a slighly more sixties garage pop like trip. I have to admit i am totally loving this album at the moment, its full of sunshine tinged garage rock and thats always good in my world. Its the kind of album i would imagine billy childish would have made had he been born near a beach in california. Clocking in at just over 32 minutes you just want to keep hitting the repeat button after each listen. January 2010-Cd-Heavenly recordings-€17.99

Wavves-Wavvves-Wavves return with a blistering new collection of the most fuzzed up garage rock you are likely to hear all year round. The album, without the fuzz, kind of reminds of the mighty sounds of the pixies meets yo la tengo in a slightly garage rock style. What wavves then do to what is actually quite a catchy collection of songs is feed absolutely everything through the biggest fuzzbox imagineable. The end result is like some totally lo fi bedroom take on the beach boys meets the pixies recorded onto a cheap dictaphone cassette. After a few listens the noise becomes less obvious and you realise there are some truly awesome indie rock songs hidden underneath. Its kind of like hearing psychocandy by the jesus and mary chain all over again. Fans of yo la tengo and the pixies should give this one a bit of time. This version on the bella union label also comes with two extra bonus tracks. July 2009-Cd-Bella union-€13.99
