Road Records newsletter March 19th 2010

Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

Ok folks, apologies we are a bit late with this weeks list, a lot of our deliveries were a bit late arriving because of St Patrick’s day, in fact some of them still haven’t arrived so we are going to just go ahead and send you the list with everything we have so far.
Some news on the Autechre album first, we have been informed that the album will not be released until next Friday, a lot of you are waiting for it today so sorry about that.
We have been updating our classic vinyl section in the last few weeks and this week we have added tons of new stock to our Jazz, Soul and Funk sections. You may notice lots of new reissues on the Blue Note label in particular but if there is something on the label you are specifically looking looking for and its not listed here then just drop me a line and we can order it in for you. It looks like we can get pretty much anything on the label on vinyl for you at the moment. The same applies for a lot of the other Jazz and Soul titles, if you are looking for something by an artist listed here, then just drop me an email and I should be able to get it for you in a couple of weeks. Most of the stuff is still in print on vinyl and reasonably priced at around €14 / €15 each.
The remaining two Mazzy Star album have just arrived in this week on viny, so that’s all three back in print at last.
Our pick of the Irish titles this week is the new album from Clancy [aka Paul Clancy], the album comes out on the Catchy Go Go label, home to National Prayer Breakfast [and Paul was the drummer with them].
The Johann Johannsson album is extremely limited so we recommend you order / reserve your copy as soon as you can if you want one. The cd version will be out sometime in April.
Kreidler are back with a brand new album this week, we do love Kreidler around here.

That’s pretty much it for me for another week.
Back to normal again next week, hopefully.

Until then, have a good weekend !

Art ensemble of chicago-A jackson in your house-Recorded in paris in 1969, the band at the time were stripped down to a four piece of roscoe mitchell, lester bowie, malachi favors and joseph jarman. At times sounding like a more angst ridden yeah yeah yeahs meets the pixies, the album is full of angular post punk with plenty of catchy singalong choruses. Some of the more uptempo tunes kind of bring me back to the grunge rock of hole with little bits of early pj harvey thrown in too. March 2010-Lp-V2-€23.99

The band have previously released three albums worth of garage rock tinged indie rock on the catchy go go label, this album is also released on the same label. This is the debut full length album from paul clancy and was co written with fellow dublin based songwriter herm [kevin connolly]. This is a really lovely collection of rustic folk like sounds with hints of the kind of alt folk / country vibes of the likes of smog or bonnie prince billy. There are also a couple of almost indie folk like gospel sounds with some lovely meandering guitar picking and dual vocal harmonies. The album is just a perfect collection of downbeat folk music, its definitely an album that fans of the aforementioned smog and will oldham will love as will fans of the likes of red house painters. Its hard to figure out from the sleevenotes on the back who was actually playing on these sessions but as far as i can make out the following people were in attendence, miles davs [trumpet], milt jackson [vibraphone], thelonious monk [piano], percy heath [bass], kenny clarke [drums], sonny rollins [tenor sax] and horace silver [piano]. The album features a collection of haunting and somewhat evil sounding tracks with hints of everything from early aphex twin / autechre to ambient dubstep. Its the kind of things that really reminds me of some of the earlier releases on the planet mu label, full of broken beats and harsh digital soundscapes. Johannsson, johann-And in the endless pause there came the sound of bees-Limited edition vinyl release from modern classical composer johann johannsson on the type label. The cd version of this album will not be released until the end of april. The album was composed by johannsson as a soundtrack for mark crastes award winning animated film varmints. There really is only one person around at the moment that can do this kind of neo classical meets glitchy electronica with such truly beautiful end results. The album is probably one of most dramatic pieces to date, even featuring a choir on some tracks. Its a truly amazing piece of orchestral music, it must be said this one definitely leans much more towards the strings keeping the digital treatments to a bare minimum. The album ranges from some harold budd like piano minimalism to some truly incredible bursts of widescreen orchestration, it sounds like johannsson has used a full orchestra on this one. I have to say this is probably one of his finest collections to date. March 2010-Lp-Type-€18.99

Johnson, peter-Cafe society-The debut album from this dublin based singer songwriter, released through his own label. The album features ten tracks of mellow almost jazzy tinged folk sounds, full of mellow sunday afternoon jazz vibes. March 2010-Cd-Own label-€9.99

The album features a selection of recorings from six separate sessions and joining johnson are charlie mccoy [guitar], kid earnest michall [clarinet] and charley taylor [piano]. The band previously featured stefan schneider from to rococo rot but are now pared down to a three piece of thomas klein, andreas reihse and detlef weinrich. The album features some beautifully dubby synth based sounds falling somewhere between a more bass heavy kraftwerk and the kind of space age sounds of seventies space rock. There are also hints of late eighties synth pop in here but it falls much more on the dubby side of synth music. There are obvious references to some early krautrock, its very much an album that falls into the dubby ambient genre overall though. March 2010-Cd-Italic-€21.99

Lewis, furry-I will turn your money green [double vinyl]-One of the all time great bluesmen of the 1920's, furry lewis was one of the only bluesmen of his generation to achieve widespread fame with the blues revival of the sixties, after a recording hiatus of nearly three decades. He originally began his recording career way back in 1927 and this album features tracks from those very first sessions. The album is pressed on double heavyweight vinyl. Mingus, charles-The clown-Seen by many as a true masterpiece by charles mingus, this album from 1957 is now reissued on the atlantic label. Motorpsycho-Heavy metal fruit-The return of this norwegian based psyche rock outfit for their fourteenth album to date [to be honest i lost count many years ago]. The album sees the band dip heavily into their love of all things seventies rock with a bit of everything from prog to zeppelin like groove rock to almost can like krautrock. They seem to handpick all the best ingredients from the seventies and mix it all into one great big throbbing beast. There are plenty of meanering prog like moments in here too with some of the longer tracks delving into some serious psychedelia. From howling guitar solos to synth based space rock, there is something in here for everybody. March 2010-Cd-Stickman records-€18.99

March 2010-Cds-Own label-€4.99

Reinhardt, jonas-Powers of audition-The follow up to his self titled album from 2008, also on the ever reliable kranky label. It would be fair to say this album owes a huge debt to all things seventies krautrock and space rock. Its an album featuring some lovely synth based ambient sounds, at times bordering on the motorik sounds of early krautrock [ala cluster]. Its also an album that fans of the likes of the dreamy space rock sounds of tangerine dream will instantly fall in love with. Its definitely not your normal drone based sounds that kranky seem to love and a nice surprise it is too. Definitely one for fans of early post rock, krautrock and ambient synth sounds. March 2010-Cd-Kranky-€17.99

Scott-heron, gil-From south africa to south carolina-This was the second album that gil scott-heron made with procuder / composer brian jackson, first minute of a new day preceded this in 1975. This album was originally released back in 1976 on the tvt label and is now reissued featuring all the original artwork. Along with jackson the band also features bob adams [drums], danny bowens [bass], victor brown [vocals / bells / tambourine], adenola [congas], charlie saunders [conga], bilal sunni ali [harmonica] and barnett williams [percussion]. The album features johannesburg, a toast to the people, the summer of 42, beginnings [first minute of a new day], south carolina [barnwell], essex, fell together and lovely day.-Lp-Rumal gia records-€13.99

Scott-heron, gil-Small talk at the 125th and leonx [a new black poet]-Recorded live in a new york night club back in 1970, its an almost entirely spoken word album with only congos and bongo accompanying scott-heron. The album features the revolution will not be televised, omen, brother, comment #1, small talk at 125th and lenox, evolution and flashback, plastic pattern people, whitey on the moon, the vulture, enough, paint it black, wholl pay reparations on my soul and everyday. Scott-heron is joined by eddie knowles [conga], charlie saunders [conga] and david barnes [percussion / vocals]. Surfer blood-Astro coast-The debut album from this florida based indie rock outfit on the kanine label. Its a collection of somewhat blissful indie rock meets sixties surf pop. Try to imagine the likes of pavement or weezer jamming with the beach boys. Its full of clever indie rock sounds, complete with both jangly guitars and hints of shoegazing, then throw some of the vocal harmonies of the beach boys over the top of all that. Its a really happy feelgood kind of sound, drenched in reverb, at times kind of reminding me of some early pixies sounds for some reason. This could well become the soundtrack to the summer months. March 2010-Cd-Kanine-€17.99

Surfer blood-Astro coast [red vinyl with mp3 download]-The debut album from this florida based indie rock outfit on the kanine label. To blacken the pages and korperschwache-A way dark-Cross atlantic collaboration between texas based korperschwache and dubliner paul mcaree [aka to blacken the pages]. The album features a thunderous collection of doom / drone metal and blissful shoegazing spread out over two cds. At times featuring pure drone based white noise akin to the likes of boris, sunn o or nadja whilst also taking in some of the more shoegazing sounds of either jesu or my bloody valentine. Its haunting, evil and blissfully euphoric all at the same time. Its probably one of the finest records i have heard in this genre in quite some time, highly recommended if you like your drone rock and avant garde noise. March 2010-2cd-Colony records-€9.99

Travelling with my portable electric phonograph-Volume one-A rather strange sounding concept for a compilation at first glance, the album features a collection of jazz sounds from the fourties and fifties from both africa and india. But delve a bit deeper and you will notice the one thing both continents have in common is their attempts to gain independence from british colonialism. At the time both cultures were obviously influenced musically by british ex pats and in some way by the american jazz scene. This here compilation attempts to bring together some of the biggest names on the jazz scene from both continents, its a kind of alan lomax world tour compilation really. A lot of these bands would have been house bands in local hotels and social clubs. Its a fine example of two musical cultures meeting and merging into some quite original. March 2010-Lp-Monk records-€13.99

Waters, muddy-Singing the blues [1954 to 1959]-By 1954 the father of chicago blues could be found supported by a host of famous names in his band. The album is pressed on two big heavy slabs of 180 gram vinyl and comes in a lovely gold printed sleeve. The majority of the tracks featured here were originally released as singles on the legendary chess label, with a few bonus outtakes and alternate versions thrown in. The album features im ready, smokestack lightning, young fashioned ways, mannish boy, trouble no more, forty days and forty nights, just to be with you, dont go no further, diamonds at your feet, i love the life i live i live the life i love, rock me, look what you done, got my mojo working, good news, evil, shes nineteen years old, close to you, walkin thru the park, blues before sunrise, lonesome road blues, take the bitter with the sweet, shes into something, southbound train and double trouble. March 2010-2lp-Doxy-€21.99

White stripes-Under great white northern lights [cd and dvd set]-In the summer of 2007 the white stripes embarked on a cross country canadian tour to accomplish their goal of performing in every province and territory across the expansive northern nation. The film first premiered at the toronto film festival in september 2009 and features a host of live performances ranging from traditional venues to all manner of strange locations including a bowling alley, a boat and a city bus. The album comes packaged with the film on dvd and also has a 16 track live cd featuring the bands highlights from the tour. The cd features lets shake hands, black math, little ghost, blue orchid, the union forever, ball and biscuit, icky thump, im slowly turning into you, jolene, 300 mph torrential outpour blues, we are going to be friends, i just dont know what to do with myself, prickly thorn but sweetly worn, fell in love with a girl, when i hear my name and seven nation army. March 2010-2cd-Xl-€14.99

Xeno and oaklander-Sentinelle-The debut full length album from this new york based duo on weird records. The band features liz wendelbo and sean mcbride. According to the bands website the album was recorded entirely live in the studio exclusively using analogue instruments and its got to be said you can really get the live feel from the record. It also must be said that this record owes a huge debt to both the early sounds of kraftwerk and the more electro pop sounds of the late eighties. Its a little bit too dark and bleak to be really c0nsidered synth pop and maybe just a bit too uptempo to fall into the krautrock genre either. Its a truly superb merging of both genres with lots of space age synth sounds, crunchy sparse beats and lots of throbbing synth bass action. Imagine a more harsh sounding human league, gary numan or early omd blended with the pure minimalism of kraftwerk. It my be totally retro but who cares when its this good. March 2010-Lp-Weird records-€17.99

Clancy-Road to the heart-Clancy is the brand new solo project from the former drummer with dublin indie rock outfit the national prayer breakfast [aka npb]. March 2010-Cd-Catchy go go-€11.99

Devane, ed-Molten membrane-Eleven track collection of dark haunting electronica from irish producer ed devane. The album is released through the irish electronic specialist label mantrap recordings. The album features a collection of haunting and somewhat evil sounding tracks with hints of everything from early aphex twin / autechre to ambient dubstep. Its the kind of things that really reminds me of some of the earlier releases on the planet mu label, full of broken beats and harsh digital soundscapes. Its an album of many layers and constantly changing sounds, wobbly dubstep suddenly goes into passages of deep dubby ambience. March 2010-Cd-Mantrap recordings-€9.99

Fredrick and the golden dawn-Heres a piece of ivans head-The debut ep from this dublin based outfit released on their own label. The ep features splinter, the guess and blood wedding. The band features kevin nolan, michael hickey, kolja zeidler, stephen nolan and kris mcglynn. The album features a collection of truly dramatic underground pop sounds. Its got touches of the chamber pop vibes of the likes of the divine comedy meets the old cabaret sounds of bertholt brecht. March 2010-Cds-Own label-€4.99

Humanzi-Kingdom of ghosts-Brand new album from this irish rock outfit, now signed to the firstborn is dead label [home to the mighty stef]. The album features eleven slices of grunged up garage rock, including their recent single bass balls. Its a big thunderous guitar heavy collection of grunge, garage rock and post punk delivered with lots of sixties garage punk attitude. March 2010-Cd-The firstborn is dead-€12.99

Pulpit, the-Political corrrectness gone mad-The debut three track ep from this garage rock / sleaze rock three piece from dublin. Featuring laura lovejoy [vocals / guitars], evan o leary [synth] and neil mooney [drums]. The ep features political correctness gone mad, love is denied and paula. The ep features some very classy sixties like garage rock sleaze, like strip joint music meets garage rock. Think of the cramps jamming with holly golightly and gallon drunk. March 2010-Cds-Own label-€4.99

Autechre-Oversteps [released on the 26th of march]-Autechre return with their tenth studio album to date and dare i say it but this is probably one of their most melodic and accessible albums so far. Hard to believe these guys have been making albums since 1993, yes indeed incunabula came out that long ago. Its also been two years since their last album quaristice [also on the warp label]. Its not often you can use the words beautiful and autechre in the same sentence but this album truly is a thing of beauty, it may be an album that will divide longtime fans as its definitely one of their more mellow collections. Its still full of crunchy harsh sounds, darkly evil even, but there is definitely a warmth to this collection that hasn't really appeared before. I may be going mad here but i think i can even hear live instruments on this album, a harp or harpsichord seems to appear on the third and fourth track at least, adding a somewhat oriental like feel to proceedings. As ever with any autechre album its must be said the production of this record is truly sublime, with so much going on there is still real clarity to what they do, every sound is given its own little space in the mix. Its probably one of their most ambient collection but still superb nonetheless.-Cd-Warp-€13.99

Black heart procession-Six-Brand new album from the black heart procession, formed many years ago from the ashes of three mile pilot, one have became the legendary pinback and the other is now black heart procession. The album features another fine collection of dark hearted gothic tinged sounds with this one having a somewhat folk and folk rock like feel about it. There are elements of everything from nick cave to tom waits to willard grant conspiracy in here, its probably one of their fuller sounding albums with a couple of the tracks actually reminding me of a more downbeat gallon drunk. Its an album full of dramatic almost bluesy like dirges with even the odd nod towards seminal outfit swans. Its dark and gothic but somehow uplifting at the same time. Very very limited double vinyl pressing. Features three sides of music and the fourth side is etched. December 2009-2lp-Temporary residence-€19.99

Burial-Untrue-The master of dubstep returns with his second album on the hyperdub label, the album thankfully carries on from where his self titled debut left off, featuring some totally lush and subdued dubstep beats burial then adds some of the most atmospheric and ambient sound effects over the top of it, this mans talent seems the be the less is more school of thinking as he lets the beats take control of everthing, he then layers lush synth effects and minimal vocal samples over the top to create some of the most divine dub tinged sounds, the ambient sound effects work so perfectly with the rapid fire dubstep beats, a slightly more uptempo collection compared to the first album but still a contender for ambient collection of the year, november 2007-Cd-Hyperdub-€16.99

Crowley, adrian-Season of the sparks-The return of irish songwriter adrian crowley and the follow up to the stunning long distance swimmer album. The album was produced by stephen shannon and features guest spots from kevin murphy on cello, jarja gaynor on viola, thomas haugh on drums, emma smith on violin, cillian macdonnell on drums and arrangements from london based duo geese. Its a beautiful collection of laid back folky based sounds with some truly haunting pastoral string sounds and luscious church organs. Its perfect late night headphone music with touches of the modern folk sounds of james yorkston, the slow core of low and even the odd hint of leonard cohen. Its like honey for your ears. The album was released earlier this year on the tin angel label and now comes reissued on the ever reliable scottish label chemikal underground. November 2009-Cd-Chemikal underground-€9.99

Fahey, john-Yellow princess-This was to be faheys second and final album for the vanguard label, it was recorded in 1968, features the yellow princess, view, lion, march for martin luther king, the singing bridge of memphis tennessee, dance of the inhabitants of the invisible city of bladensburg, charles lee a memoriam, irish setter and commemorative transfiguration, this reissue on the vanguard label comes in the original sleeve and still features faheys rather bizarre liner notes, features jay ferguson on organ, mark andes on electric bass, matt andes on guitars and kevin kelley on drums, reissued in 2004-Cd-Vanguard-€12.99

Fools gold-Fools gold-Los angeles based multicultural outfit finally drop their self titled debut album for the iamsound label. Spearheaded by luke top and lewis pesacov, both native israelis who emigrated to la at a young age. The album is like some kind of mini tour around the different musical cultures of the world. Obvious influences would be funky african music and traditional folk of the middle east. These guys also add in lots of guitar based alt rock influences, its ends up reminding me a bit of vampire weekend with more of a traditional feel. 2009-Cd-Iamsound records-€16.99

The band is now pretty much based around long time member john darnielle and he is joined on this album by peter hughes and jon wurster [superchunk]. Owen pallett [final fantasy] provides string arrangements. The album features both a rustic and lush collection of mostly folk based sounds, a very intimate and sombre affair it must be said. October 2009-2lp-4ad-€21.99

Pilotlight-The post war musical-The debut full length album from this london based [irish] outfit released through their own label. The album features a truly euphoric collection of post rock tinged indie rock sounds, imagine radiohead with a bit of the intricate meanderings of either mogwai or explosions in the sky. Its full of slow building guitar led sounds, some finally building up into thunderous explosions of pure fuzzed up guitar action. February 2010-Cd-Own label-€10.99

Sleep whale-Little brite-Sleep whale are based around joel north on guitar and cello along with bruce blay on violin and programming. This is a really beautifully collection of sounds incorprating sparse psyche folk, post rock and gentle electronica. Its sees the meeting of gently plucked acoustic guitars, looped found sounds and laptop electronica. At times it kind of reminds me of what john fahey would sound like jamming with four tet. There is also lots of lovely gentle post rock kind of vibes going on here too, at times reminscent of the likes of the dirty 3 or even the rachels on a slightly more avant folk like buzz. Limited edition green vinyl pressing. 2009-Lp-Western vinyl-€12.99
