Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.
Ok folks, apologies we are a bit late with this weeks list, a lot of our deliveries were a bit late arriving because of St Patrick’s day, in fact some of them still haven’t arrived so we are going to just go ahead and send you the list with everything we have so far.
Some news on the Autechre album first, we have been informed that the album will not be released until next Friday, a lot of you are waiting for it today so sorry about that.
We have been updating our classic vinyl section in the last few weeks and this week we have added tons of new stock to our Jazz, Soul and Funk sections. You may notice lots of new reissues on the Blue Note label in particular but if there is something on the label you are specifically looking looking for and its not listed here then just drop me a line and we can order it in for you. It looks like we can get pretty much anything on the label on vinyl for you at the moment. The same applies for a lot of the other Jazz and Soul titles, if you are looking for something by an artist listed here, then just drop me an email and I should be able to get it for you in a couple of weeks. Most of the stuff is still in print on vinyl and reasonably priced at around €14 / €15 each.
The remaining two Mazzy Star album have just arrived in this week on viny, so that’s all three back in print at last.
Our pick of the Irish titles this week is the new album from Clancy [aka Paul Clancy], the album comes out on the Catchy Go Go label, home to National Prayer Breakfast [and Paul was the drummer with them].
The Johann Johannsson album is extremely limited so we recommend you order / reserve your copy as soon as you can if you want one. The cd version will be out sometime in April.
Kreidler are back with a brand new album this week, we do love Kreidler around here.
That’s pretty much it for me for another week.
Back to normal again next week, hopefully.
Until then, have a good weekend !

At times sounding like a more angst ridden yeah yeah yeahs meets the pixies, the album is full of angular post punk with plenty of catchy singalong choruses. Some of the more uptempo tunes kind of bring me back to the grunge rock of hole with little bits of early pj harvey thrown in too. March 2010-Lp-V2-€23.99

The band have previously released three albums worth of garage rock tinged indie rock on the catchy go go label, this album is also released on the same label. This is the debut full length album from paul clancy and was co written with fellow dublin based songwriter herm [kevin connolly]. This is a really lovely collection of rustic folk like sounds with hints of the kind of alt folk / country vibes of the likes of smog or bonnie prince billy. There are also a couple of almost indie folk like gospel sounds with some lovely meandering guitar picking and dual vocal harmonies. The album is just a perfect collection of downbeat folk music, its definitely an album that fans of the aforementioned smog and will oldham will love as will fans of the likes of red house painters. Johannsson, johann-And in the endless pause there came the sound of bees-Limited edition vinyl release from modern classical composer johann johannsson on the type label. The cd version of this album will not be released until the end of april. The album was composed by johannsson as a soundtrack for mark crastes award winning animated film varmints. There really is only one person around at the moment that can do this kind of neo classical meets glitchy electronica with such truly beautiful end results. The album is probably one of most dramatic pieces to date, even featuring a choir on some tracks. Its a truly amazing piece of orchestral music, it must be said this one definitely leans much more towards the strings keeping the digital treatments to a bare minimum. The album ranges from some harold budd like piano minimalism to some truly incredible bursts of widescreen orchestration, it sounds like johannsson has used a full orchestra on this one. I have to say this is probably one of his finest collections to date. March 2010-Lp-Type-€18.99
Johnson, peter-Cafe society-The debut album from this dublin based singer songwriter, released through his own label. The album features ten tracks of mellow almost jazzy tinged folk sounds, full of mellow sunday afternoon jazz vibes. March 2010-Cd-Own label-€9.99

The album features a selection of recorings from six separate sessions and joining johnson are charlie mccoy [guitar], kid earnest michall [clarinet] and charley taylor [piano]. The band previously featured stefan schneider from to rococo rot but are now pared down to a three piece of thomas klein, andreas reihse and detlef weinrich. The album features some beautifully dubby synth based sounds falling somewhere between a more bass heavy kraftwerk and the kind of space age sounds of seventies space rock. There are also hints of late eighties synth pop in here but it falls much more on the dubby side of synth music. There are obvious references to some early krautrock, its very much an album that falls into the dubby ambient genre overall though. March 2010-Cd-Italic-€21.99
Lewis, furry-I will turn your money green [double vinyl]-One of the all time great bluesmen of the 1920's, furry lewis was one of the only bluesmen of his generation to achieve widespread fame with the blues revival of the sixties, after a recording hiatus of nearly three decades. Motorpsycho-Heavy metal fruit-The return of this norwegian based psyche rock outfit for their fourteenth album to date [to be honest i lost count many years ago]. The album sees the band dip heavily into their love of all things seventies rock with a bit of everything from prog to zeppelin like groove rock to almost can like krautrock. They seem to handpick all the best ingredients from the seventies and mix it all into one great big throbbing beast. There are plenty of meanering prog like moments in here too with some of the longer tracks delving into some serious psychedelia. From howling guitar solos to synth based space rock, there is something in here for everybody. March 2010-Cd-Stickman records-€18.99

March 2010-Cds-Own label-€4.99
Reinhardt, jonas-Powers of audition-The follow up to his self titled album from 2008, also on the ever reliable kranky label. It would be fair to say this album owes a huge debt to all things seventies krautrock and space rock. Its an album featuring some lovely synth based ambient sounds, at times bordering on the motorik sounds of early krautrock [ala cluster]. Its also an album that fans of the likes of the dreamy space rock sounds of tangerine dream will instantly fall in love with. Its definitely not your normal drone based sounds that kranky seem to love and a nice surprise it is too. Definitely one for fans of early post rock, krautrock and ambient synth sounds. March 2010-Cd-Kranky-€17.99
Scott-heron, gil-From south africa to south carolina-This was the second album that gil scott-heron made with procuder / composer brian jackson, first minute of a new day preceded this in 1975. Along with jackson the band also features bob adams [drums], danny bowens [bass], victor brown [vocals / bells / tambourine], adenola [congas], charlie saunders [conga], bilal sunni ali [harmonica] and barnett williams [percussion]. The album features johannesburg, a toast to the people, the summer of 42, beginnings [first minute of a new day], south carolina [barnwell], essex, fell together and lovely day.-Lp-Rumal gia records-€13.99
Scott-heron, gil-Small talk at the 125th and leonx [a new black poet]-Recorded live in a new york night club back in 1970, its an almost entirely spoken word album with only congos and bongo accompanying scott-heron. Surfer blood-Astro coast-The debut album from this florida based indie rock outfit on the kanine label. Its a collection of somewhat blissful indie rock meets sixties surf pop. Try to imagine the likes of pavement or weezer jamming with the beach boys. Its full of clever indie rock sounds, complete with both jangly guitars and hints of shoegazing, then throw some of the vocal harmonies of the beach boys over the top of all that. Its a really happy feelgood kind of sound, drenched in reverb, at times kind of reminding me of some early pixies sounds for some reason. This could well become the soundtrack to the summer months. March 2010-Cd-Kanine-€17.99
Surfer blood-Astro coast [red vinyl with mp3 download]-The debut album from this florida based indie rock outfit on the kanine label. To blacken the pages and korperschwache-A way dark-Cross atlantic collaboration between texas based korperschwache and dubliner paul mcaree [aka to blacken the pages]. The album features a thunderous collection of doom / drone metal and blissful shoegazing spread out over two cds. At times featuring pure drone based white noise akin to the likes of boris, sunn o or nadja whilst also taking in some of the more shoegazing sounds of either jesu or my bloody valentine. Its haunting, evil and blissfully euphoric all at the same time. Its probably one of the finest records i have heard in this genre in quite some time, highly recommended if you like your drone rock and avant garde noise. March 2010-2cd-Colony records-€9.99
Travelling with my portable electric phonograph-Volume one-A rather strange sounding concept for a compilation at first glance, the album features a collection of jazz sounds from the fourties and fifties from both africa and india. But delve a bit deeper and you will notice the one thing both continents have in common is their attempts to gain independence from british colonialism. At the time both cultures were obviously influenced musically by british ex pats and in some way by the american jazz scene. This here compilation attempts to bring together some of the biggest names on the jazz scene from both continents, its a kind of alan lomax world tour compilation really. A lot of these bands would have been house bands in local hotels and social clubs. Its a fine example of two musical cultures meeting and merging into some quite original. March 2010-Lp-Monk records-€13.99
Waters, muddy-Singing the blues [1954 to 1959]-By 1954 the father of chicago blues could be found supported by a host of famous names in his band. The album is pressed on two big heavy slabs of 180 gram vinyl and comes in a lovely gold printed sleeve. The majority of the tracks featured here were originally released as singles on the legendary chess label, with a few bonus outtakes and alternate versions thrown in. The album features im ready, smokestack lightning, young fashioned ways, mannish boy, trouble no more, forty days and forty nights, just to be with you, dont go no further, diamonds at your feet, i love the life i live i live the life i love, rock me, look what you done, got my mojo working, good news, evil, shes nineteen years old, close to you, walkin thru the park, blues before sunrise, lonesome road blues, take the bitter with the sweet, shes into something, southbound train and double trouble. March 2010-2lp-Doxy-€21.99
White stripes-Under great white northern lights [cd and dvd set]-In the summer of 2007 the white stripes embarked on a cross country canadian tour to accomplish their goal of performing in every province and territory across the expansive northern nation. The film first premiered at the toronto film festival in september 2009 and features a host of live performances ranging from traditional venues to all manner of strange locations including a bowling alley, a boat and a city bus. The album comes packaged with the film on dvd and also has a 16 track live cd featuring the bands highlights from the tour. The cd features lets shake hands, black math, little ghost, blue orchid, the union forever, ball and biscuit, icky thump, im slowly turning into you, jolene, 300 mph torrential outpour blues, we are going to be friends, i just dont know what to do with myself, prickly thorn but sweetly worn, fell in love with a girl, when i hear my name and seven nation army. March 2010-2cd-Xl-€14.99
Xeno and oaklander-Sentinelle-The debut full length album from this new york based duo on weird records. The band features liz wendelbo and sean mcbride. According to the bands website the album was recorded entirely live in the studio exclusively using analogue instruments and its got to be said you can really get the live feel from the record. It also must be said that this record owes a huge debt to both the early sounds of kraftwerk and the more electro pop sounds of the late eighties. Its a little bit too dark and bleak to be really c0nsidered synth pop and maybe just a bit too uptempo to fall into the krautrock genre either. Its a truly superb merging of both genres with lots of space age synth sounds, crunchy sparse beats and lots of throbbing synth bass action. Imagine a more harsh sounding human league, gary numan or early omd blended with the pure minimalism of kraftwerk. It my be totally retro but who cares when its this good. March 2010-Lp-Weird records-€17.99

Clancy-Road to the heart-Clancy is the brand new solo project from the former drummer with dublin indie rock outfit the national prayer breakfast [aka npb]. March 2010-Cd-Catchy go go-€11.99
Devane, ed-Molten membrane-Eleven track collection of dark haunting electronica from irish producer ed devane. The album is released through the irish electronic specialist label mantrap recordings. The album features a collection of haunting and somewhat evil sounding tracks with hints of everything from early aphex twin / autechre to ambient dubstep. Its the kind of things that really reminds me of some of the earlier releases on the planet mu label, full of broken beats and harsh digital soundscapes. Its an album of many layers and constantly changing sounds, wobbly dubstep suddenly goes into passages of deep dubby ambience. March 2010-Cd-Mantrap recordings-€9.99
Fredrick and the golden dawn-Heres a piece of ivans head-The debut ep from this dublin based outfit released on their own label. The ep features splinter, the guess and blood wedding. The band features kevin nolan, michael hickey, kolja zeidler, stephen nolan and kris mcglynn. The album features a collection of truly dramatic underground pop sounds. Its got touches of the chamber pop vibes of the likes of the divine comedy meets the old cabaret sounds of bertholt brecht. March 2010-Cds-Own label-€4.99
Humanzi-Kingdom of ghosts-Brand new album from this irish rock outfit, now signed to the firstborn is dead label [home to the mighty stef]. The album features eleven slices of grunged up garage rock, including their recent single bass balls. Its a big thunderous guitar heavy collection of grunge, garage rock and post punk delivered with lots of sixties garage punk attitude. March 2010-Cd-The firstborn is dead-€12.99
Pulpit, the-Political corrrectness gone mad-The debut three track ep from this garage rock / sleaze rock three piece from dublin. Featuring laura lovejoy [vocals / guitars], evan o leary [synth] and neil mooney [drums]. The ep features political correctness gone mad, love is denied and paula. The ep features some very classy sixties like garage rock sleaze, like strip joint music meets garage rock. Think of the cramps jamming with holly golightly and gallon drunk. March 2010-Cds-Own label-€4.99

Autechre-Oversteps [released on the 26th of march]-Autechre return with their tenth studio album to date and dare i say it but this is probably one of their most melodic and accessible albums so far. Hard to believe these guys have been making albums since 1993, yes indeed incunabula came out that long ago. Its also been two years since their last album quaristice [also on the warp label]. Its not often you can use the words beautiful and autechre in the same sentence but this album truly is a thing of beauty, it may be an album that will divide longtime fans as its definitely one of their more mellow collections. Its still full of crunchy harsh sounds, darkly evil even, but there is definitely a warmth to this collection that hasn't really appeared before. I may be going mad here but i think i can even hear live instruments on this album, a harp or harpsichord seems to appear on the third and fourth track at least, adding a somewhat oriental like feel to proceedings. As ever with any autechre album its must be said the production of this record is truly sublime, with so much going on there is still real clarity to what they do, every sound is given its own little space in the mix. Its probably one of their most ambient collection but still superb nonetheless.-Cd-Warp-€13.99

The album features another fine collection of dark hearted gothic tinged sounds with this one having a somewhat folk and folk rock like feel about it. There are elements of everything from nick cave to tom waits to willard grant conspiracy in here, its probably one of their fuller sounding albums with a couple of the tracks actually reminding me of a more downbeat gallon drunk. Its an album full of dramatic almost bluesy like dirges with even the odd nod towards seminal outfit swans. Its dark and gothic but somehow uplifting at the same time. Very very limited double vinyl pressing. Features three sides of music and the fourth side is etched. December 2009-2lp-Temporary residence-€19.99
Burial-Untrue-The master of dubstep returns with his second album on the hyperdub label, the album thankfully carries on from where his self titled debut left off, featuring some totally lush and subdued dubstep beats burial then adds some of the most atmospheric and ambient sound effects over the top of it, this mans talent seems the be the less is more school of thinking as he lets the beats take control of everthing, he then layers lush synth effects and minimal vocal samples over the top to create some of the most divine dub tinged sounds, the ambient sound effects work so perfectly with the rapid fire dubstep beats, a slightly more uptempo collection compared to the first album but still a contender for ambient collection of the year, november 2007-Cd-Hyperdub-€16.99
Crowley, adrian-Season of the sparks-The return of irish songwriter adrian crowley and the follow up to the stunning long distance swimmer album. The album was produced by stephen shannon and features guest spots from kevin murphy on cello, jarja gaynor on viola, thomas haugh on drums, emma smith on violin, cillian macdonnell on drums and arrangements from london based duo geese. Its a beautiful collection of laid back folky based sounds with some truly haunting pastoral string sounds and luscious church organs. Its perfect late night headphone music with touches of the modern folk sounds of james yorkston, the slow core of low and even the odd hint of leonard cohen. Its like honey for your ears. The album was released earlier this year on the tin angel label and now comes reissued on the ever reliable scottish label chemikal underground. November 2009-Cd-Chemikal underground-€9.99
Fahey, john-Yellow princess-This was to be faheys second and final album for the vanguard label, it was recorded in 1968, features the yellow princess, view, lion, march for martin luther king, the singing bridge of memphis tennessee, dance of the inhabitants of the invisible city of bladensburg, charles lee a memoriam, irish setter and commemorative transfiguration, this reissue on the vanguard label comes in the original sleeve and still features faheys rather bizarre liner notes, features jay ferguson on organ, mark andes on electric bass, matt andes on guitars and kevin kelley on drums, reissued in 2004-Cd-Vanguard-€12.99
Fools gold-Fools gold-Los angeles based multicultural outfit finally drop their self titled debut album for the iamsound label. Spearheaded by luke top and lewis pesacov, both native israelis who emigrated to la at a young age. The album is like some kind of mini tour around the different musical cultures of the world. Obvious influences would be funky african music and traditional folk of the middle east. These guys also add in lots of guitar based alt rock influences, its ends up reminding me a bit of vampire weekend with more of a traditional feel. 2009-Cd-Iamsound records-€16.99

The band is now pretty much based around long time member john darnielle and he is joined on this album by peter hughes and jon wurster [superchunk]. Owen pallett [final fantasy] provides string arrangements. The album features both a rustic and lush collection of mostly folk based sounds, a very intimate and sombre affair it must be said. Its an album rooted in rustic americana with a couple of tracks reminding me a wee bit of some very early rem. Pressed on double heavyweight 180 gram vinyl and comes in a gatefold sleeve. October 2009-2lp-4ad-€21.99
Pilotlight-The post war musical-The debut full length album from this london based [irish] outfit released through their own label. The album features a truly euphoric collection of post rock tinged indie rock sounds, imagine radiohead with a bit of the intricate meanderings of either mogwai or explosions in the sky. Its full of slow building guitar led sounds, some finally building up into thunderous explosions of pure fuzzed up guitar action. February 2010-Cd-Own label-€10.99
Sleep whale-Little brite-Sleep whale are based around joel north on guitar and cello along with bruce blay on violin and programming. This is a really beautifully collection of sounds incorprating sparse psyche folk, post rock and gentle electronica. Its sees the meeting of gently plucked acoustic guitars, looped found sounds and laptop electronica. At times it kind of reminds me of what john fahey would sound like jamming with four tet. There is also lots of lovely gentle post rock kind of vibes going on here too, at times reminscent of the likes of the dirty 3 or even the rachels on a slightly more avant folk like buzz. Limited edition green vinyl pressing. 2009-Lp-Western vinyl-€12.99

Road Records newsletter - March 5th 2010
Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.
The weeks seem to be flying by at the moment, hard to believe its March already, I have to stop telling people about albums that are coming out at the start of March, no wonder they look at me blankly.
It’s a new month so we have to pick a new album of the month, there have been a few contenders with Pavement coming closest but we decided to implement a new rule that the albums have to be brand new to be included. So apologies to Pavement [if you are reading this] but we did give you our album of the week instead. So this month we have gone for the truly beautiful new album from The Besnard Lakes, there is a full review below but we think you will love it. As a very special bonus to our album of the month subscribers we also have a bonus four track digital ep to give away with the cd, if you want to subscribe in the next week you will also receive this and an added extra bonus ten track cd sampler from our nice friends at the Out On A Limb label. The cd features five old tracks and five exclusive new recordings and comes in a personalised album of the month club sleeve, trust me you won’t find these anywhere else.
The Archie Bronson Outfit album has just arrived in today on vinyl, it comes pressed on heavyweight yellow vinyl and also features a digital download coupon [this is limited to only 500 copies].
Some nice new titles from the No Quarter label this week from Burning Star Core and also from Coconuts. Both Burning Star Core and Coconuts cds are only €10.99 for this week.
The Errors album “Come Down With Me” is now in stock on vinyl, limited to only 300 copies on Mogwai’s Rock Action label.
Gonjasufi is a brand new artist on the Warp label and his new album is on special this week for only €13.99 on cd and double lp.
The Kissaway Trail album is now in stock on the Bella Union label.
Fionn Regan has finally released his new album this week.
The new Tunng album is now in stock on vinyl and if you hurry up you will also get a bonus remix cd included.
The new White Hinterland album is well worth checking out if you get a chance, its on the Dead Oceans label and is on special offer this week for only €11.99 on cd and €13.99 on vinyl.
New Irish titles this week from George Worrall, John Shelly & The Creatures and a double cd compilation from Dun Laoghaire College of Further Education [DCFE]
The Soul Jazz reissue of the Tribe Records anthology is quite beautifully packaged, only €14.99 on both cd and double lp.
Oh yeah, I nearly forgot my list of vinyl albums that come with digital download coupons – Archie Bronson Outfit, Besnard Lakes, Burning Star Core and White Hinterland.
Congratulations to Adrian Crowley for winning the Choice Music prize this week, not just a talented songwriter but a real gent too.
That’s it from me for another week, see you next week when we should have some news on some Record Store Day exclusives coming out on the 17th of April. We should also be taking orders for the upcoming Redneck Manifesto album on the website early next week, this one is coming on cd and vinyl.
Adios !

Pavement-Quarantine the past [the best of pavement]-To longtime pavement fans a best of this band would include pretty much everything in their back catalogue, so the band have made your job easier by selecting their own personal favourite tracks for this wonderful 23 track collection. The band have recently returned from long time hibernation and are about to embark on a long awaited reunion tour. All the tracks for this new collection have been lovingly remastered and are all chosen by the band themselves. The album features a collection of classic singles, album tracks, early tracks and one rare obscure compilation track. These guys need little by way of introduction from me, but suffice to say they are quite possible one of the best [and most influential] indie rock bands to ever walk this planet. The full tracklisting for the album is gold soundz, frontwards, mellow jazz docent, stereo, in the mouth a desert, two states, cut your hair, shady lane / j vs s, here, unfair, grounded, summer babe [winter version], range life, date [w ikea], debris slide, shoot the singer [1 sick verse], spit on a stranger, heaven is a truck, trigger cut / wounded kite at 17, embassy row, box elder, unseen power of the picket fence and fight this generation. Besnard lakes-The besnard lakes are the roaring night-The besnard lakes finally return after a three year hiatus with the long awaited follow up to the besnard lakes are the dark horse. The band were originally formed in 2001 by montreal based husband and wife pairing jace lasek and olga goreas, they released their previous album on the jag jaguwar label aswell, their first collection [volume one] was on the english label earworm way back in 2005. This is an album of true epic beauty sounding at times like a more rootsy rock take on shoegazing fronted by the beach boys. Its has to be said straight away though, that there is much more going on here than just a few simple comparisons, this is an album of truly expansive sounds. In fact, i cant think of many albums that make me think of fleetwood mac and my bloody valentine at the same time. Its got hints of seventies rock, both of the rootsy variety [ala neil young] and the more melodic [dare is say elo] with plenty of hefty guitar solo workouts thrown in. What this pair do though is take all those ingredients and make something both retro and totally original sounding, utterly infectious at times whilst also not afraid to rock out too. There are also moments that remind me of the blissful intimacy of the likes of mazzy star or even low with lots of hazy reverb drenched guitar sounds. They have hinted at greatness with the previous two albums but i really think they have achieved it with this new collection. March 2010-Cd-Jag jaguwar-€11.99

Archie bronson outfit-Coconut [with bonus dvd and mp3 download]-The archie bronson outfit return with their first new album since derdang derdang from 2006 [also on domino records]. The album was recorded in london and benton harbour in michigan with production by tim goldsworthy [dfa]. This is a truly superb slice of modern psychedelic garage pop / rock from this much underated english three piece. The band come across like some updated version of a long lost late sixties psychedelic pop band, full of wah wah laden guitar sounds and all manner of weird sound effects. At its heart is a collection totally infectious rock songs, one or two even bordering on something akin to psychedelic punk funk. The album is just full of short sharp blasts of guitar heavy psyche pop, managing to be both totally retro and highly original at the same time. Try to imagine some totally fuzzed up new wave take on the sounds of the late sixties with a little bit of early punk rock and a hint of bluesy swamp rock thrown in. Features ten songs clocking in at 40 minutes, this is probably one of their most direct albums to date. This limited edition version will come with a free bonus dvd featuring videos for every track on the album, most of them made by the band and some by artist friends and collaborators. The album is pressed on yellow vinyl and is limited to only 500 copies in total. Comes with a bonus mp3 download coupon included inside the sleeve too. March 2010-Lp-Domino-€16.99

Its an album of intricate post rock blended with lots of funky beats and lush synth vibes. Sounding at times like battles jamming with either daft punk or the chemical brothers with a bit of air thrown in for good measure. There are still plenty of those mogwai like guitar led moments on the album but this one definitely adds much more of an electro like feel, its almost like some updated post rock take on the space rock sounds of the late seventies. The album is limited to only 300 copies on vinyl and comes in a gatefold sleeve. March 2010-Lp-Rock action-€15.99

Backed by a trio of the west coasts most renowned producers [namely mainframe, flying lotus and the gaslamp killer]. The album features a rather strange and new sounding almost psychedelic take on underground hip hop. At times it sounds like some long lost early seventies psyche folk record, full of middle eastern pop influences before gentle hip hop beats take control. Its probably an album that owes much to the producers too, its full of cleverly worked samples and looped sound effects. With a total of 19 tracks included this one plays more like a compilation of different artists at times, there are even some heavy guitar based tunes in here. Knife, the-Tomorrow in a year [double cd]-Brand new album from swedish outfit the knife, an opera based on the life of charles darwin. The music was made for the opera tomorrow in a year, commissioned by the danish performance group hotel pro forma. The album is based on the charles darwin book on the origin of the species. The album features a studio version of the opera, with some slight differences and variations on the original live score. The vocals are all handled by mezzo soprano kristina wahlin bomme, actor laerke bo winther and pop singer jonathan johanson. The piece was written in collaboration with mt sims and planningtorock. As mentioned it is still an album deeply rooted in folk music, both english and american with plenty of laptop electronic trickery still going on too. White hinterland-Kairos-The second full length album from this outfit fronted by songwriter casey dienel, her previous album phylactery factory came out in 2008 on the dead oceans label aswell. This time she is joined by alexis gideon and shawn w creedon, both adding a much more electronic feel to this collection. The previous collection was a much more haunting folky based affair but this one delves more into a kind of dubby electronic sound, her voice is still the one ingredient that makes the album special though. It almost has a kind of dubby electro pop feel about it, probably best described as ambient synth pop maybe. Its beautifully sparse, haunting and ethereal. March 2010-Cd-Dead oceans-€11.99

White hinterland-Kairos [with bonus mp3 download coupon]-The second full length album from this outfit fronted by songwriter casey dienel, her previous album phylactery factory came out in 2008 on the dead oceans label aswell. The album comes with a free digital download coupon inside the sleeve. March 2010-Lp-Dead oceans-€13.99
Worrall, george-Action not progress-Eleven track debut album from this irish folk / blues singer songwriter, released on his own label. The album features eleven beautifully sparse traditional sounding folk / blues songs. Its almost like a mix of the traditional sounds of robert johnson and the more minimal vibes of someone like john fahey. There is a beautiful sparse kind of atmosphere about the album, its pretty much just one man and his guitar throughout. March 2010-Cd-Own label-€5.99

The album features a collection of melodic and very catchy alt rock sounds ranging from rootsy rock tinged ballads to some truly rocking indie vibes. Its got a lovely folky pop kind of feel about it from time to time. At time reminscent to the likes of the pixies or sugar with the quieter tunes reminding me of belle and sebastian [just a bit]. Comes in a three part foldout card sleeve. March 2010-Cd-Jsc-€12.99
Regan, fionn-The shadow of an empire-The second album from irish singer songwriter fionn regan and the long awaited follow up to the end of history from 2007. The album was pretty much recorded and produced by regan himself this time, recorded at his own studios in wicklow. Its a slightly more robust rootsy rock kind of album compared to his folky debut, it pretty much features a full band throughout giving the album a more full sound overall. Its the kind of thing that falls somewhere between dylans early foray into electric folk and the rootsy americana of ryan adams. March 2010-Cd-Heave ho-€13.99

The album is limited to only 500 copies on vinyl, there will be no cd release of this album. Long, vyvienne-Caterpillar sarabande [this album is released on the 12th of march]-Finally the debut full length album from irish singer / cellist vyvienne long. The much awaited follow up to her mini album birdtalk from 2006. The album features twelve brand new tracks including the by now famous track happy thoughts [featured on a recent tv advert]. Before going solo vyvienne is probably best known for her work with damien rice [both in the studio and live]. She seems to have been born with talent oozing from every finger, add that to the voice of an angel and you have one very very talented individual. She is probably best known for her cello work but she is also a mean piano player as you will her on several track on the album. The album features a truly beautiful mix of sultry chamber pop, kooky folk and string led laid back summery pop sounds. There are elements of the kind of kooky pop of the likes of either kate bush or bjork but this woman does have her own distinctive take on this kind of string led pop vibe. Its beautifully dramatic at times with extra added strings just adding to the overall orchestral feel to the album. Its definitely something a bit different to the general singer songwriter sound and a real understated gem it is too. The album comes superbly packaged in a lovely heavy card gatefold sleeve. - special preorder price, the album will normally retail at €18.99-Cd-Vivs music-€14.99
Pavement-Quarantine the past [this album will be in stock on the 12th of march]-To longtime pavement fans a best of this band would include pretty much everything in their back catalogue, so the band have made your job easier by selecting their own personal favourite tracks for this wonderful 23 track collection. Beach house-Teen dream-Teen dream is the third album from this baltimore based outfit and the long awaited follow up to their stunning album devotion from 2008. The album was recorded in upstate new york in an old converted church called dreamland and was produced by chris coady [he has worked with the likes of tv on the radio, blonde redhead and yeah yeah yeahs]. It may only be january but this is an early contender already for the most beautiful / lush album of the year so far. The album carries on the folky americana themes of devotion and takes them to a whole new level, its a beautifully loose collection of sounds, full of spooky atmospherics which may have something to do with recording in a church. Its a truly amazing meeting of old and new sounds, rustic slide guitar seemlessly blending with the kind of woozy backwards guitars that my bloody valentine would be proud of. Its downbeat, intimate and truly expansive at the same time with an atmosphere that kind of reminds me a wee bit of mazzy star. If you liked devotion then prepared to be totally blown away by this one. January 2010-Cd-Bella union-€17.99
Bell x1-Flock-Album number 3 from dublin based outfit bell x1 and the follow up the music in mouth, features the single bigger than me and 10 other new tracks, tracklisting is reacharound, flame, rocky took a lover, he said she said, bad skin day, natalie, bigger than me, just like mr benn, my first born for a song, trampoline and lamposts, october 2005-Cd-Island-€10.99

Benson, brendan-My old familiar friend-Brendan benson takes some time out from the ranconteurs to release his fourth solo album. The album features another fine collection of guitar based alt rock / pop sounds with lots of his trademark almost retro like rootsy rock influences. At times benson delves into the psychedelic world of sixties pop sounds coming on like some jangly pop take on the byrds crossed with the beatles. Its got to be said this man really does know how to write an infectiously catchy rock song, the album is packed with catchy hooks and memorable singalong choruses. August 2009-Cd-V2-€13.99
Florence and the machine-Lungs-The debut album from florence welch on the island label. The album features a trio of producers with paul epworth, steve mackay and james ford from simian mobile disco all chipping in along the way. Its an album of truly kooky pop soujnds with plenty of fuzzed up indie rock influences. Imagine kate bush with a bit of the raw edge of early pj harvey, the kookiness of bjork and the piano led angry balladry of kate nash. Its got a bit of a sleazy kind of bluesy edge to it from time to time calling to mind some of the earlier white stripes albums. July 2009-Cd-Island-€11.99

Jape-Ritual-The third solo album from jape aka richie egan who also doubles up as bass player with the redneck manifesto. The album features ten slices of wonderfully laid back electronic pop sounds with one or two more laid back folky based acoustic tunes thrown in. Its got the perfect blend of electronic beats, synth effects and live guitars so as to fall somewhere between blissful summer electronic pop and funky indie rock. Lovers of funky electro pop will love this as will fans of top quality new wave and indie pop. June 2008-Cd-V2-€13.99
Johnston, daniel-Yip jump music-Originally released way back in 1983 this is long considered to be johnstons first proper full length release. The album was recorded on a portable cassette player at his home in texas. The album has now been digitally remastered and also comes with new packaging including a large fold out poster with lyrics and daniel johnston sketches. One of the finest collections of lo fi outsider music evern recorded. August 2009-Cd-Feraltone-€12.99
Lindstromm and christabelle-Real life is no cool-Norwegian based producer hans-peter lindstromm teams up with vocalist christabelle [aka isabell h sandoo] for this collection of totally sultry electro pop and funky late night disco sounds on the smalltown supersounds label. Its full of throbbing electro pop and seventies like disco vibes overlayed with christabelles sultry and oh so soulful vocals. A collection of highly hypnotic modern pop sounds. 2009-Cd-Smalltown supersounds-€12.99
Low anthem-Oh my god charlie darwin-The second full length album from the low anthem and their first for their new label bella union. The album features a rather beautiful collection of laid back rootsy folk sounds and the odd bit of full on barroom rootsy rock n roll. Its a hauntingly intimate collection of mostly acoustic based sounds with some lovely slide guitar and fiddle action. The album has a lovely rustic feel about it with some gentle country vibes comparable to the likes of whiskeytown and the alt country scene that followed them. Its also got hints of the likes of red house painters, my morning jacket and even elliott smith. Its one of those rare quiet gems thats both perfectly sombre and strangely uplifting at the same time. Comes in a lovely card gatefold sleeve. June 2009-Cd-Bella union-€13.99
May, imelda-Love tattoo [special irish only double cd version]-The debut album from this irish born rockabilly singer on the ambassador records label. The album features ten self penned tracks along with covers of wild about my lovin and its your voodoo working. This is some classic old school fifties rockabilly peppered with lots of early jazzy influences. Sounding a bit like wanda jackson fronting bill haleys band with just the odd hint of fourties jazz and some lovely sleazy burlesque influences. Features some totally rocking sounds along with the odd bit of late night jazz. This new version is an exclusive irish only release. Comes with a limited edition eight track live album.-Cd-Blue thumb records-€12.99
Midlake-The courage of others [limited 180 gram vinyl]-Midlake return with their first new full length album since the trial of van occupanther back in 2006. Its their third album to date and a darker more slow affair compared to their last outing [also on the bella union label]. The band features regular members tim smith, eric pulido, eric nichelson, paul alexander and mckenzie. Joining them on the album are stephanie dosen on vocals, max townsley on guitar, jesse chandler on harpsichord and fiona brice on violin. This is definitely an album that owes a fair bit to both the english psychedelic folk sound of the seventies and late sixties woodstock era folk rock thing. Its an album of both early folk / country rock and classic psychedelic folk. Its full of beautifully mellow, laid back hazy folk sounds with a lovely kind of loose campfire feel about it. There is also still plenty of that neil young like vibe carried on from their last outing, its a perfect blend of electric and acoustic sounds. I think long time fans will simply adore this one and they may well have won over a few new fans, particularly those who like their alt folk and rootsy americana. Limited edition 180 gram vinyl pressing. January 2010-Lp-Bella union-€20.99
Orchestre poly-rythmo de cotonou-Echos hypnotiques volume two [from the vaults of albarika store 1969 to 1979]-The second in a series of truly stunning recordings from this soul / funk collective from benin in africa. Released on the archive based analog africa label the album features an truly awesome collection of sounds from one of benins finest hidden secrets. Blending traditional vodoun rhythms to funk, salsa, soul and afro-beat. Sounds a little like some heavenly meeting of fela kuti, james brown and funkadelic. Its the most hypnotic kind of african soul / funk you are ever likely to hear featuring some truly stunning guitar interplay and sweet soul vocals. Complete with several brass and persussion members this is big band funk / soul at its very very finest. The album comes packaged in a deluxe card box with a massive 44 page full colour book featuring detailed liner notes and plenty of cool photos from the seventies. 2009-Cd-Analog africa-€18.99
Phoenix-Wolfgang amadeus phoenix-The return of this ultra cool and highly sophisticated french pop outfit with their new album on the v2 label. Its another fine collection of seventies tinged guitar pop sounds. Its damn near impossible not to get sucked in by these guys with their hook laden guitar pop coming across at times like some space rock take on the likes of elo mixed with the slightly glam pop sounds of some roxy music tunes. Its totally hip shaking and very clever at the same time without ever getting too cheesy. June 2009-Cd-V2-€13.99
Soft pack-The soft pack-The debut album from this san diego based garage rock outfit formerly known as the muslims. The album features ten short sharp blasts of old school garage rock meets the early punk rock sounds of the seventies. Its full of fuzzed up and extremely catchy punk pop sounds, imagine the modern lovers fronted by iggy pop on a slighly more sixties garage pop like trip. I have to admit i am totally loving this album at the moment, its full of sunshine tinged garage rock and thats always good in my world. Its the kind of album i would imagine billy childish would have made had he been born near a beach in california. Clocking in at just over 32 minutes you just want to keep hitting the repeat button after each listen. January 2010-Cd-Heavenly recordings-€17.99

November 2009-2cd-Island-€17.99
Wavves-Wavvves-Wavves return with a blistering new collection of the most fuzzed up garage rock you are likely to hear all year round. The album, without the fuzz, kind of reminds of the mighty sounds of the pixies meets yo la tengo in a slightly garage rock style. What wavves then do to what is actually quite a catchy collection of songs is feed absolutely everything through the biggest fuzzbox imagineable. The end result is like some totally lo fi bedroom take on the beach boys meets the pixies recorded onto a cheap dictaphone cassette. After a few listens the noise becomes less obvious and you realise there are some truly awesome indie rock songs hidden underneath. Its kind of like hearing psychocandy by the jesus and mary chain all over again. Fans of yo la tengo and the pixies should give this one a bit of time. This version on the bella union label also comes with two extra bonus tracks. July 2009-Cd-Bella union-€13.99

That’s it from me for another week, see you next week when we should have some news on some Record Store Day exclusives coming out on the 17th of April. We should also be taking orders for the upcoming Redneck Manifesto album on the website early next week, this one is coming on cd and vinyl.

Besnard lakes-The besnard lakes are the roaring night [with bonus mp3 download]-The besnard lakes finally return after a three year hiatus with the long awaited follow up to the besnard lakes are the dark horse. This is an album of true epic beauty sounding at times like a more rootsy rock take on shoegazing fronted by the beach boys.

The band features jordan redaelli, tim evans and daniel mitha, the album was recorded / mixed by mike fellows in new york. Errors-Come down with me [limited to 300 copies]-Album number two from this epic post rock meets funky electronica outfit signed to the rock action label [run by mogwai].

New young pony club-The optimist-The second album from this giddy young indie pop outfit. The album this time was completely self produced and also self released. Features the most recent singles chaos and lost a girl. Its got all the ingredients of the first album with an added maturity about the sounds. Its still got plenty of uptempo electro pop sounds, punk funk and new wave but there is something a bit more complex about the overall fell. Its got a bit of that minimal disco vibes of bands of old like esg with the kind of heavy electro of ladytron. March 2010-Cd-The numbers-€13.99

March 2010-Cd-Domino-€13.99
Tunng-And then we saw land [with bonus remix cd]-Brand new album from tunng on the full time hobby label, features the most recent single hustle. This is probably one of their most uptempo and freeflowing albums to date. Its got a much bigger kind of feel about it, still distinctly folk like at times but the scope of sounds on this one really is something new for tunng. As mentioned it is still an album deeply rooted in folk music, both english and american with plenty of laptop electronic trickery still going on too. This album does sound more like a full band effort compared to some of the more intimate previous collections, its almost folk pop like from time to time with the odd moment of something akin to choral folk. The album will come packaged with a bonus limited edition remix cd, exclusive to indie retailers like ourselves [only 1000 copies available in total]. March 2010-Lp-Full time hobby-€14.99

March 2010-Cd-Domino-€13.99

John, shelly and the creatures-Dinosaur-The debut album from this belfast based outfit on the jsc label. John shelley and the creatures are a four piece outfit featuring kev carlisle, phil d'alton, ger gormley and walter thee goon.

Callahan, bill-Rough travel for a rare thing [this album is released on the 12th of march]-Limited edition vinyl only release from bill callahan [aka smog]. The album is limited to only 500 copies on vinyl, there will be no cd release of this album. The album was recorded live in melbourne in november of 2007 and features some gems from the smog back catalogue along with a few from his solo album woke in a whaleheart.-Lp-Sea note-€17.99
