Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.
Another week another list, how are you today, feeling good I hope.
Lots of goodies for you this week.
This weeks album of the week goes the new National album “High Violet”, the album is on special offer for this week for only €12.99 on cd, we should have the limited edition coloured vinyl for you on Friday [tomorrow].
The new Phosphorescent album is on special offer this week for only €12.99 on cd.
I have to admit I though The Radar Brothers had disappeared off the face of the earth at this stage but alas they prove me wrong and release a brand new album this week on Chemikal Underground.
One of our favourite Irish singer / songwriters Cathy Davey is back with a brand new album, and in our opinion, her finest too.
If you fancy a bit of classic post punk / math rock then look no further than our very own Jogging for a quality slice of fuzzed up anger.
The new Unkle album is now in stock. The album comes as a normal cd for €16.99 and also a super deluxe version in hardback box with 32 page board book for €22.99.
Foals are back with their second album this week, the album is now in stock on cd and vinyl.
Dead Weather return with their second album in under two years, featuring the many talents of Jack White, Alison Mossheart, Dean Fertita and Jack Lawrence.
Some nice new albums this week falling into the mellow late night electronica genre, my two personal picks come from Bitcrush on the N5MD label and Manual on the Make Mine Music label, the Manual album will also appeal to fans of a slighly more electronica led post rock sound, both albums are simply beautiful in their own gentle way.
The debut album from Mynabirds comes highly recommended if you want to treat yourself to a dose of folky gospel pop.
Coming on like the metting of Bjork and Joanna Newsom, the new album from Serafina Steer is a perfect slice of kooky electronic / folk music.
J. Mascis is back with a brand new band Sweet Apple, where does he find the time.
A couple of nice new vinyl reissues from the Atlantic label this week featuring Willie Nelson, David Crosby and Crosby Stills And Nash.
The recent Mono live album is now in stock on limited edition triple vinyl, also comes with the full concert on dvd inside the sleeve.
Dead Meadow are back with a deluxe double vinyl album, featuring live and new tracks.
Autamata frontman Ken McHugh is back with a brand new instrumental side project We Saw Heaven, and rather beautiful it is too.
Irish band Talulah Does The Hula are back with a brand new single, limited to only 250 hand numbered copies on cd.
Thats it, I’m signing off now so have a great weekend and hopefully see you around the shop over the weekend.

National, the-High violet-The national finally return with their long awaited follow up to the boxer from 2007. The eleven new tracks were recorded at the bands own studios in brooklyn with some extra recording and mixing at tarquin studios in connecticut with peter katis. The album features another superb collection of dark hearted and sombre indie rock / new wave sounds full of brooding atmospherics and shimmering reverb laden guitar effects. For me their sound is still heavily rooted in the darker side of post punk ./ indie rock ala the cure, joy division or echo and the bunnymen which is then layered with tons of anthemic american rock influences. This album is awash with lush string sounds, it almost sounds like they are backed by a full orchestra at times. They are still one of the few bands out there who can make dark and brooding indie rock sound utterly uplifting. May 2010-Cd-4ad-€12.99

Davey, cathy-The nameless-Irish singer songwriter returns with her brand new album on hammer toe records, her third album to date. The album comes rather beautifully presented in a deluxe [giant] foldout poster sleeve with printed paper wraparound holder. Along with tons of strings davey is joined by conor o brien [villagers] and neil hannon [divine comedy]. I must say this is a much more rustic, almsot live sounding record compared to her previous two records, its full of dramatic almost vaudeville like folk sounds which sees davey adding in lots of banjo on this album for the first time. Its a wonderfully kooky collection of sounds with davey plucking all sorts of influences to create something totally original. Its got a bit of everything from jazz to folk to vaudeville musical and plenty more. Could well be her finest and most varied collection to date. May 2010-Cd-Hammer toe records-€13.99
Harlem-Hippies [with download coupon]-Originally from tuscon arizona and now residing in the austin texas, this is their first release since signing to the matador label. Their previous, self released album, free drugs came out in 2008. I have to say this is just a classic collection of top quality fuzzed up sixties like garage rock meets post punk meets scratchy new wave. Ok there are lots of fuzzed up lo fi garage bands around at the moment but these guys really know how to knock out a quality tune underneath all the fuzz. They kind of remind me a little of maybe pavement or yo la tengo jamming with the kinks, with maybe just a bit more of a sixties garage pop slant to it. Sixteen tracks in 40 minutes, its fast and furious, damn good fun too. The album comes with a download coupon featuring all tracks from the vinyl. May 2010-Lp-Matador-€14.99
Holy fuck-Latin [double cd version with bonus disc]-Holy fuck return with their brand new album on the young turks label. Recorded in a barn in rural ontario. In the past the band featured a rotating cast of musicians but this is pretty much the first one to feature their consistent touring lineup of mart schulz [drums], matt mcquaid [bass], brian borcherdt [effects / feedback] and graham walsh [effects / feedback]. This is the long awaited follow up to their previous album from 2007. The album features a pulsating blend of almost trans am like space rock sounds and motorik krautrock rhythms building up into some kind of indie rock meets early rave hybrid. Features lots of scuzzy analog keyboard sounds, full of distorted white noise. It kind of reminds me of trans am jamming with fuck buttons. May 2010 - the album comes with a bonus four track cd featuring the tracks grease fire, positive ghost, dr dr e and jungles. The bonus cd is limited to the first 1000 copies of the album and is only available through independents shops like ourselves.-2cd-Young turks-€12.99
Jogging-Minutes-The long awaited debut album from this dublin based three piece post punk outfit on the richter collective label. I suppose you could call these guys a bit of an underground supergroup on the dublin music scene considering they have either been in or worked with the likes of jape, jeff martin, goodtime john, coldspoon conspiracy, cap pas cap, guilty optics and crayonsmith in the past, its quite the cv when you think about it. The album features a truly wonderful blast of old school shouty post punk featuring lots of clever math rock and post rock nuances. Imagine shellac jamming with fugazi and the jesus lizard, dare i say it even reminds me a bit of our very own and now sadly departed giveamanakick. A really solid blast of classic avant punk, noisy as hell, just like it should be. May 2010-Cd-The richter collective-€13.99
Manual-Drowned in light-The first proper studio album from manual in nearly five years, excluding a collection of rarities and two minimalist ambient collections. This is also his very first album for the make mine music label, home to the likes of yellow 6, piano magic and library tapes. Manual is the work of one very talented musician / producer from denmark by the name of jonas munk and this man really does know how to blend the blissful shoegazing sounds of the late nineties with lush ambient electronica. At time reminscent of the likes of ulrich schnauss with hints of everything from cocteau twins to durutti column to ambient seventies space rock. There is even the odd hint of the dubby ambience of the likes of seefeel in here with lots of looping sound effects layered over classic ambient soundscapes. Its really is a beautiful collection, even dipping its feet into a sound that could be described as electronic post rock. A real understated gem. May 2010-Cd-Make mine music-€10.99
Phosphorescent-Heres to taking it easy-Matthew houck returns with his first new collection of songs since the album pride in 2007, his last album to willie featured an album made up entirely of willie nelson covers. This time houck is backed by his full touring band in the studio, pride was pretty much an all solo affair so the sound on this one is much bigger and probably more akin to the willie nelson covers album. Its still pretty much another collection of rustic country rock sounds, full of rootsy rock and classic old time country influences along the way. Its definitely got elements of that early neil young country rock vibe going on, there are even hints of the band and gram parsons in here. The album features some truly beautiful pedal steel guitar action [im a sucker for that sound] and lots of uplifting brass sounds. As far as big production sounds goes, its definitely his most ambitious album to date. If you are a fan of the modern rustic country tinged sounds of the likes of bonnie prince billy then this is definitely one for you. May 2010-Cd-Dead oceans-€12.99
Radar brothers-The illustrated garden-Brand new album from the radar brothers on the chemikal underground label. Original member jim putnam has enlisted two members for his first new collection in two years. The band is now stripped right back to just a basic three piece with be hussey on bass and stevie treichel on drums. Its probably one of their more loose and poppy sounding albums to date, full of rootsy pop like sounds and classic american indie rock. It kind of reminds me of a more rootsy pop like pavement at times. May 2010-Cd-Chemikal underground-€11.99
Steer, serafina-Change is good change is good-Co produced by capitol k and benge, the album also features mercury nominees seb rochford [drums] and emma smith [violin]. This is one of those rare albums that is neither folk music nor electronic, but falling somewhere inbetween to create something rather haunting and rather unique. Steer is a classical harpist but the story goes that the harp was stolen somewhere in the middle of recording the album so needs must as they say and she carried on regardless. There are moments comparable to joanna newsome but with benge and capitol k adding lots of kooky electronic sound effects, there the comparisons end. Its full of kooky avant folk influences, quite trippy at times, almost reminiscent of bjork or even kate bush equiped with a laptop. May 2010-Cd-Static caravan-€11.99
Sweet apple-Love and desparation [limited red vinyl with download coupon]-Brand new outfit on the tee pee label featuring j mascis [dinosaur jr], tim parnin [cobra verde], john petkovi and dave sweetapple [witch]. It must be said that album is not quite as heavy as i would have expected from the lineup involved, instead its very much a collecton of guitar heavy power pop. There are some hints towards the early sounds of dinosaur jr but this album is more comparable to the instantly catchy power pop of bands like the foo fighters. Imagine green mind era dinosaur jr meets the earlier and slightly heavier side of the foo fighters. As you would imagine the album does feature some superb guitar riff action with just the odd hint at classic seventies american rock. Limited edition red vinyl pressing comes in a big heavy card gatefold sleeve and also features a download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. May 2010-Lp-Tee pee-€14.99
Ted leo and the pharmacists-The oldest house-Very very limited edition 7 inch only release on the matador label. Bitcrush-Of embers-This is the sixth full length release from mark cadoo under the bitcrush moniker. Cadoo is a former member of gridlock and has also released solo recordings under the name dryft. The album features a beautifully calming collection of lush ambient electronica and blissful almost shoegazing like post rock. The album features a truly lush blend of live drums, intricate post rock like guitar vibes and all manner of old school ambient synth sounds. Features lots of slow building mostly instrumental sounds with most of the tracks clocking in at the ten minute mark, giving them all plenty of time to develop. May 2010-Cd-N5md-€13.99

Crosby, david-If only i could remember my name [180 gram vinyl reissue]-David crosbys debut solo album, originally released way back in 1971, hard to believe it would be another 18 years before he got around to making the second one. The album features a host of guests from the music scene at the time including the likes of jerry garcia, grace slick, neil young, graham nash, david frieberg, laura allen, paul kantner, phil lesh, joni mitchell, michael shrieve, mickey hart and many many more. The album features music is love, cowboy movie, tamalpais high, laughing, what are their names, traction in the rain, song with no words [tree with no leaves], orleans and id swear there was something there. Now reissued on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl and comes in the original gatefold sleeve. May 2010-Lp-Atlantic-€17.99
Dead flags-Gentlemans club-The debut full length album from this irish indie rock outfit. Features their previous two singles o my love o my god and anymore. A collection of catchy melodic indie rock sounds, coming across a little bit like the strokes on a slightly more pop rock buzz. May 2010-Cd-International sexual hero records-€17.99
Dead meadow-Three kings [with download coupon]-Brand new album from stoner / psyche rock outfit dead meadown on the xemu label, the album consists of live material and five brand new studio tracks. The accompanying dvd features a full length concert movie. The album is pressed on double vinyl and comes in a super heavyweight card gatefold sleeve. The album also comes with two download coupons, one featuring all the tracks from the album itself and the other featuring extra bonus tracks. The album features a truly awesome collection of fuzzed up guitar heavy psyche rock, space rock and seventies groove rock sounds. There are hints of late sixties experimental psyche rock blended with a bit of everything from hawkwind to early floyd. At times sounding like spacemen 3 on a heavier psyche / prog rock buzz blended with the more guitar heavy sounds of loop. There are even moments on the album when you could question whether hendrix is actually dead or has he just been hiding away with this band all this time. May 2010-2lp-Xemu records-€21.99
Dead weather-Sea of cowards-Back with their second full length album, only a year after the first one, this veritable supergroup features the dual vocal talents of jack white [white stripes] and alison mossheart [the kills] backed by dean fertita [queens of the stoneage] and jack lawrence [the raconteurs]. The album features another guitar heavy collection of seriously groove heavy blues rock dirges. Whilst the previous album had a slightly garage blues like feel about it this one sounds more like some long lost early zeppelin collection. Its full of great big bone shaking blues rock rhythms overlayed by some truly sleazy vocal sounds courtesy of mossheart and white. If anything this is a more loose almost live sounding collection. May 2010-Cd-Third man records-€18.99
Excavated shellac-Strings [various artists]-This album features a collection of fourteen different compositions gathered together from all four corners of the world. Recorded and released on ultra rare 78rpm records between 1920 and 1950, the tracks have all been compiled by jonathan ward, the man behind the highly respected excavated shellac blog and longtime collector of rare 78rpm recordings. This is the third release on the dust to digital vinyl imprint, parlotone and focuses exclusively on ethnic music from all over the globe. The album comes with a lovely four page booklet featuring detailed liner notes on all the artists involved. Its a beautifully rustic collection of folk songs from all over the world, its like a short little journey around the world compiled onto one record. I must say the matering and sound quality of these old recordings really does sound amazing, top marks to the label for that. Without getting into all the details of the artists involved there are tracks here from armenia, india, bolivia, congo, vietnam, georgia, iran, paraguay, croatia, norway, japan, lebanon, uganda and turkey. May 2010-Lp-Parlotone-€14.99
Faithfield, rory-Songs for sooner-Brand new album from this australian born and longtime irish resident singer songwriter on the blind romantic label. Features some help from gavin murphy, nicky scott, bill shanley, johnny boyle, christian herzberger, john o brien, lorcan daly and ciaran byrne. The album features a collection of hazy summery folk pop sounds with the odd hint of melodic alt rock. May 2010-Cd-Blind romantic records-€13.99
Foals-Total life forever-The much anticipated second album from this oxford based alt rock outfit, its been two long years for devoted fans to have to wait since their debut antidote. The album features a truly infectious blend of post rock rhythms, indie rock and new wave punk funk. This one also seems to take a little journey into the slightly african like guitar tinkling of the likes of vampire weekend or fools gold. Plucking influences from all over the place the album hints at everything from talking heads to prince to seventies prog funk, but its all very modern and fresh at the same time. For want of a better phrase i would best described this is post rock punk funk. May 2010-Cd-Transgressive-€18.99

Frank and walters-The parson-Limited edition one track radio promo single. This ep is officially released as a download only so we are the only shop you can buy an actual physical copy of the track. The ep comes in slimline paper sleeve and features three and a half minutes of pure frank and walters genius. Jung turks-Liber eth-The debut full length album from this irish based two piece. The album is kind of loosely based around the sounds of classical acoustic guitar and propulsive jazz like drum sounds, thats just for starters though. Its an ever evolving sound that can go from latin american folk to jazz rock at the drop of a hat. At times it sounds like some kind of skewed acoustic post rock thing blended with the kind of madness that is mike pattons fantomas project. Its an album with so many twists and turns that i could spend ages on each track. Its jazz, post rock, avant rock, folk and plenty more. A highly rewading listen it must be said. May 2010-Cd-Own label-€9.99
Miracle bell-Light shape sound-The debut album from this kildare based three piece outfit. The album features a big uptempo happy slice of cathchy indie pop meets old school electro pop. Its got a little bit of the catchy punk funk of either lcd soundsystem or the rapture with plenty of retro sounding electro pop synth sounds thrown in. May 2010-Cd-Miracle bell records-€14.99
Mono-Holy ground [triple vinyl with dvd]-This album features a live recording of this one off show performed by this japanese post rock outfit in new york with a 24 piece orchestra. The album features some of the most dramatic and at times explosive instrumental post rock sounds you are likely to hear this side of godspeed you black emperor. The band mono have been making some of the finest intricate post rock for many years now but this one really sees them raise the bar with the inclusion of a full orchestra really given their sound a brand new dimension. With all the strings included on this album it hards not to find comparisons to the earlier sounds of godspeed, but dare i state the obvious and say there is also a beautiful orchestral element to the album that really makes it stand out as something altogether new. This triple vinyl version is limited to a total of only 3000 copies worldwide and comes packaged with the entire 90 minute live show on dvd inside the sleeve. The album also features a bonus track, follow the map, which does not feature on the cd version. The album also comes presented in a really beautiful three part card gatefold sleeve with lots of amazing photos from the concert. As an overall package it truly is a thing of beauty it must be said. May 2010-3lp-Temporary residence-€31.99
Mynabirds-What we loose in the fire we gain in the flood-The debut album on the saddle creek label from this new outfit fronted by the stunning voice of laura burhenn, former member of dc duo georgie james [the other half being john davis of q and not u]. The album was recorded by richard swift, who also contributes on several tracks and features a host of special guests including orenda fink [azure ray], aj mogis, tom hnatow [these united states] and nate walcott [bright eyes]. The album features a truly beautiful collection of rustic sounding gospel pop sounds, like some heavenly meeting of sixties motown pop and early roots rock. Its an album that harks back to the classic early country pop sounds of the likes of dusty springfield or bobbie gentry whilst also having a similar downbeat kind of dark atmosphere to the likes of mazzy star. The album also has a kind of joyous almost gospel like feel about it, like some modern gospel americana hybrid. Just one listen and you will be in love with this womans voice forever. May 2010-Cd-Saddle creek-€15.99

Nelson, willie-Phases and stages [180 gram vinyl reissue]-180 gram vinyl reissue on the atlantic label. The album was originally released way back in 1974 and now comes with all the original artwork intact, featuring liner notes on the back from mr nelson himself. Its a proper old style concept album dealing with both the womans and mans perspective on the same relationship, which is slowly coming to an end. The album features phases and stages [theme], washing the dishes, walkin, pretend i never happened, sisters coming home, down at the corner beer joint, how will i know im falling in love again, bloody mary morning, no love around, i still cant believe youre gone, its not supposed to be that way, heaven and hell, pick up the tempo and phases and stages [theme]. May 2010-Lp-Atlantic-€17.99
Nelson, willie-Shotgun willie [180 gram vinyl reissue]-Originally released in 1973 on the atlantic label. Features 12 classic examples of country music exactly as country music should be. Features a classic backing band and mr nelsons voice is in top form. Possibly one of the finest albums this man has ever recorded. Features shotgun willie, whiskey river, sad songs and waltzes, local memory, slow down old world, stay all night [stay a little longer], devil in a sleepin bag, shes not for you, bubbles in my beer, you look like the devil, so much to do and a song for you. He has had many immitators and after listening to this you can see why. The album is now reissued on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl and comes with all the original artwork included. May 2010-Lp-Atlantic-€17.99
Our little secrets-Our little secrets-Our little secrets is the long awaited debut album from irish songwriter rhob cunningham. The album features many guests including the wonderful voices of lisa hannigan, cathy davey and jenny lindfors. The album features a really sweet collection of folky tinged mellow pop sounds full of dreamy piano led ballads and hints of rootsy americana. May 2010-Cd-Ols records-€12.99
Phantom dog beneath the moon-The trees the sea in a lunar stream [comes with a bonus cd]-Phantom dog beneath the moon are an irish two piece outfit featuring aaron hurley and scott mclaughlin. This is their first full length album so far, they have released two mini albums in the past, one for the rusted rail label and one for deserted village. The album features eight tracks of gentle intimate almost indie folk like sounds. At times they kind of remind me of low, on a slightly more acoustic buzz with lots of added string sounds. Its a collection of almost ambient like folk sounds, featuring lots of extended instrumental passages bordering on some kind of psyche folk take on the likes of the rachels. The album also comes with a free bonus 12 track cd featuring tracks from their previous releases, remixes and live versions. Comes in a lovely hand stamped recycled card sleeve. May 2010-Cd-Rusted rail-€9.99
Q-Root to the fruit-Brand new album from irish singer / guitarist colm quearney on the strange vibe label. Along with making several solo albums colm is also a former member of irish rock band lir. Colm is joined by a host of local musicians on this new album including john boyle jr, graham hopkins, peter cheevers, robert malone, bill blackmore, steafano muscovi, david mcguinness, thomas walsh, laura sheeran, jenny lindfors, tadhg cooke, caoimhin o briain, jane murphy and ron cooney. The album features a blend of guitar heavy alt rock and rootsy tinged folk rock. May 2010-Cd-Strange vibe-€15.99
Schreifels, walter-An open letter to the scene-Walter schreifels releases his debut solo album. His name may not be that familiar to you but if i mention the fact he was in youth of today, gorilla biscuits, quicksand and rival schools you may just start to pay attention, especially all you old school post punk fans out there. Now aged 39 walter lives with his wife and child in brooklyn, and yes he has mellowed out somewhat compared to his early punk rock days. Its an album that seems to draw its influence from both the classic sounds of american alt rock and early english post punk. Its a little bit rootsy rock at times, for some reason it kind of reminds me of jonathan richman jamming with elvis costello. Ten solid slices of laid back alt rock, it even features an almost acoustic cover of society suckers by agnostic front. May 2010-Cd-Big scary monsters-€10.99

Total abuse-Mutt-Brand new collection on the post present label from this american post hardcore sludge rock outfit. Its a totally blistering assault on the ears featuring a guitar heavy blend of old school post hardcore rock action mixed with the kind of sluge rock sounds of labels like amphetamine reptile and even early touch and go. Imagine the jesus lizard or killdozer in a really really bad mood blended with the earlier post hardcore sounds of the likes of black flag. The vinyl also comes with a bonus download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. May 2010-Lp-Post present-€13.99
Unkle-Where did the night fall-James lavelle and co return with their fifth album under the unkle moniker. These albums are always best approached as a collection of collaborative projects, much like the likes of the soul savers or massive attack. Unkle albums always have a long list of guests and this one doesnt differ in any way on that score. The album features contributions from mark lanegan, sleepy sun, black angels, gavin clark, autolux, elle j of dark horses, joel cadbury and katrina ford from celebration, thats just the ones i recognise. Its an album of constantly shifting sounds featuring some of the dubby ambience of the aforementioned massive attack and lots of electronic based space aged funk. May 2010-Cd-Surrender all-€16.99
Unkle-Where did the night fall [deluxe edition]-James lavelle and co return with their fifth album under the unkle moniker. Unkle albums always have a long list of guests and this one doesnt differ in any way on that score. This version comes rather beautifully presented in a heavy card outer box and comes with a bonus disc of instrumental versions. The box also comes with a huge 32 page board bound book featuring artwork by warren du preez and nick thornton jones. May 2010-2cd-Surrender all-€22.99
Von shakes-The routine-The debut album from this dublin based four piece rock outfit. The album follows on from their debut single of the same name from earlier this year. The album features a blistering collection of old school rock action blended with a bit of melodic post hardcore punk rock attitude. Its full of heavy guitar led rock action, kind of has a bit of a grunge pop like feel about it with hints of the euphoric rock sounds of the likes of muse. May 2010-Cd-I nv u records-€11.99
We saw heaven-We saw heaven-Brand new project fronted by autamata mainman ken mchugh. The album was written and recorded at his home studios in wicklow and features an all analog collection of instrumental sounds, even the synths used are all old school analog. Its a very different collection of sounds compared to his work as autamata, for starters there are no vocals on this album. This is very much an almost cinematic like collection of music, its almost like the soundtrack to a movie that is waiting to be made. Its a really beautiful collection of slightly post rock tinged sounds, almost classical at times and then others quite reminscent of early sigur ros. Its both haunting and rather joyous at the same time. Its one of those rare instrumental albums that would suit both a long summer drive and a dark winters evening by the fire. May 2010-Cd-Lefthand productions-€9.99
Woodenbox with a fistful of fivers-Home and the wildhunt-The debut album from this glasgow based folk rock outfit on the electric honey label. The ep features roses are still red, two by two, still havent learned, i see people, western lights and where has the day gone.
Dead flags-Gentlemans club-The debut full length album from this irish indie rock outfit. Features their previous two singles o my love o my god and anymore.
Miracle bell-Light shape sound-The debut album from this kildare based three piece outfit. The album features a big uptempo happy slice of cathchy indie pop meets old school electro pop. Balmorhea-Constellations [with bonus mp3 download]-Brand new album from this austin texas based instrumental outfit on the western vinyl label. This mostly acoustic based outfit perfectly blend modern classical minimalism and expansive post rock. This album features a lot more piano based songs compared to the last collection rivers arms [2008]. Its the kind of album that fans of the likes of the rachels, godspeed and even dirty three will instantly fall in love with. I can also see fans of the modern classical sounds of the likes of max richter or johann johannsson really getting into this too. Its got a lovely blend of minimal piano layered with rustic strings and hints of the kind of guitar picking that john fahey would be proud of. Its an album of huge scope full of long passages of post apocalyptic like sounds whilst also taking in some truly beautiful moments of lush classical led post rock. Pressed on limited edition 180 gram vinyl and also comes with a bonus mp3 download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. March 2010-Lp-Western vinyl-€15.99
Beak-Recordings-Beak were formed in january 2009 by three bristol musicians namely billy fuller, matt williams and geoff barrow. Billy fuller was a member of fuzz against funk and has played with massive attack, robert plant and malakai in the past also. Matt williams records under the name team brick. Geoff barrow you will probably all know as one of the founding members of portishead. The band recorded the album under strick guidelines, all recordings were to be made live in one room with no overdubs, only using edits to create arrangements. The sounds on the album are very much something that will appeal to all fans of seventies krautrock and futuristic spacerock. There is plenty in here to excite fans of the likes of can or neu with lots of pulsating motorik rock led by old style analog keyboards. There is also plenty of a more modern post rock kind of vibe going on from time to time, at times reminscent of mogwai going all krautrock. Its pretty awesome stuff, sounding like some long lost gem from the late seventies. 2009-Cd-Invada-€14.99
Beautiful unit-European son-The debut solo album from former idiots guitarist and trust me im a thief head honcho brian mooney. The album was recorded in various darkened parts of dublin over the last 14 years so you can expect quite a variety of sounds on this one. The album goes right back to a previously unreleased idiots tracks and also features contributions from former idiot jimmy eadie throughout. Dylan phillips from pet lamb and dinah brand also guests. The album features a lovely downbeat collection of everything from squelchy electronic sound effects to mellow folk to beat driven indie rock. An album of beautifully eclectic lo fi indie rock. 20009-Cd-Trust me im a thief-€9.99
Childish, billy-Archive from 1959 [the billy childish story]-51 track compilation celebrating the rather lengthy career of billy childish. The album goes right back to his first band the pop rivets which he started in 1977. Along with his own solo career childish has been in some truly seminal garage rock and punk outfits throughout the years and this collection features some of the top cuts from those bands. Unlike the sub pop collection from a few years back this album just concentrates on music, so no poetry or spoken word here. The album features many tracks that have been out of print for years now and a couple of previously unreleased gems thrown in too. Features tracks from the buff medways, the mbes, the milkshakes, thee headcoats, the pop rivets, thee mighty caesars, jack ketch and the crowmen, kyra, the chatham singers, billy childish and the singing lions, the delmonas and billy childish solo. This man is probably one of the most important figures on the english garage rock and punk scene since the late seventies, a man who has always stayed true to his beliefs regardless of any trends. A truly superb overview of a very very prolific individual. Limited edition triple vinyl pressing which comes in a massive three part foldout gatefold sleeve. July 2009-3lp-Damaged goods-€21.99
Galaxie 500-Today [double cd reissue]-Limited edition deluxe double cd reissue on the domino label. This was the bands debut album, originally released in 1988 and features the original three piece lineup of dean wareham, damon krukowski and naimo yang. The album was produced by kramer and features flowers, pictures, parking lot, dont let our youth go to waste, temperatures rising, oblivious, its getting late, instrumental, tugboat and king of spain. The album now comes packaged as a double cd with lots of new updated liner notes. The bonus cd features the rykodisc compilation uncollected which features rarities, demos and unreleased outtakes. Limited to only 2000 copies in total. March 2010-2cd-Domino-€12.99
Knife, the-Tomorrow in a year [double cd]-Brand new album from swedish outfit the knife, an opera based on the life of charles darwin. The music was made for the opera tomorrow in a year, commissioned by the danish performance group hotel pro forma. The album is based on the charles darwin book on the origin of the species. The album features a studio version of the opera, with some slight differences and variations on the original live score. The vocals are all handled by mezzo soprano kristina wahlin bomme, actor laerke bo winther and pop singer jonathan johanson. The piece was written in collaboration with mt sims and planningtorock. I must admit opera is not really my forte but this one here sounds nothing like opera of old. I suppose it would have to fall much more in to the modern avant garde side of opera music with lots of ambient electronic passages and moments of downbeat techno. Pressed on double cd with foldout poster booklet and comes in a three part foldout card sleeve. March 2010-2cd-Brille-€14.99
Lennon, jinx-Trauma themes idiot times-Irelands very own musical poet returns with possibly his strongest album to date. The album features another fine collection of insightful lyrics with plenty of his trademark humour and cynical darkness. Features sixteen slices of cutting edge poetic lyricism like only jinx lennon knows how. 2009-Cd-Septic tiger records-€14.99
Liars-Drums not dead limited version-Comes with a bonus dvd featuring 3 different films made for the entire album by julian gross, angus andrew and markus wambsganss, so basically you get 36 different videos for the album, these guys are up there with the likes of animal collective for their truly bizzare approach to songwriting with their use of weird electronic, tribal style drum beats, acid folk, vocal chanting and general psychedelic madness, a highly rewarding album but it does take a few listens to get to grips with it, february 2006-2cd-Mute-€12.99
Logikparty-Good hood-Ok so i should begin by saying this single review is going to be extremely biased, why, because the drummer in the band works here in road records and has threatened me with violence unless we make it single of the week. So anyway, this is the debut single from this new [ish] dublin based outfit, released on 7 inch only on their own label white plague reocrds. Limited to only 500 copies and it also comes with a free download coupon. The single is a rather superb slice of jerky post punk meets new wave noise. Imagine gang of four jamming with shellac with just a touch of the au pairs thrown in, its brilliantly jerky with lots of post punk anger in its delivery. The single also features the hypnotically funky track iodine on the flip side. March 2010-7"-White plague records-€4.99
Pet lamb-Tenderness-Dublin based alt rock outfit, think dinosaur junior meets royal trux, from way back in 1998, possibly pet lambs finest album-Cd-Blunt-€7.99
Pilotlight-The post war musical-The debut full length album from this london based [irish] outfit released through their own label. The album features a truly euphoric collection of post rock tinged indie rock sounds, imagine radiohead with a bit of the intricate meanderings of either mogwai or explosions in the sky. Its full of slow building guitar led sounds, some finally building up into thunderous explosions of pure fuzzed up guitar action. February 2010-Cd-Own label-€10.99
Planet parade-Ghosts to people-The debut four track ep from this kildar based four piece. Features cut the cord, sunshine, play fair and holding fire. The ep was produced by graham hopkins [the frames and therapy]. The ep features a very euphoric collection of melodic indie rock sounds. November 2009-Cds--€3.99
Plinth-Albatross-A rather interesting concept from english based composer michael tanner [aka plinth]. The album is based around his attempts at recreating the classic fleetwood mac albatraoss in its entirety, as the sleeve notes state, he tried, failed but created something very beautiful at the same time. Tanner is joined by aine o dwyer on harp, richard moult on piano and nick palmer on piano. The album features a truly beautiful collection of drone based sounds with lots of gentle electric guitar picking. Its almost like something i would imagine the likes of john fahey would come up with during the latter stages of his career, its full of long drawn out guitar notes and all manner of bowed and droning sound effects in the background. 2009-Cd-Truenote-€9.99
Prince jammy-Crowning of prince jammy-Possibly one of my personal all time favourite dub collections and one of the finest compilations to come from the awesome pressure sounds label. The album features a collection of jammy productions from the seventies and early eighties. Features a selectin of both vocal tracks and lenghty dub mixes. This is possibly one of the heaviest collections of seventies roots reggae you are likely to hear and an essential addition to any collection. The album comes pressed on double vinyl and comes in a gatefold sleeve with superbly detailed liner notes.-2lp-Pressure sounds-€16.99
Somadrone-Fuzzing away to a whisper-The debut full length album from dublins very own somadrone aka neil o connor aka keyboards and drone specialist with the redneck manifesto, double cd collection which comes with a 6 track second cd featuring the long out of print 10 inch only collection lets depart, the album is a really really fine collection of mellow deep electronica mixed with lots of live guitars, bass, strings and even vibraphone, as good as anything you will hear on the likes of the leaf label, lo recordings etc, late night electronica never sounded better, october 2005-Cd-Trust me im a thief-€9.99
To blacken the pages and korperschwache-A way dark-Cross atlantic collaboration between texas based korperschwache and dubliner paul mcaree [aka to blacken the pages]. The album features a thunderous collection of doom / drone metal and blissful shoegazing spread out over two cds. At times featuring pure drone based white noise akin to the likes of boris, sunn o or nadja whilst also taking in some of the more shoegazing sounds of either jesu or my bloody valentine. Its haunting, evil and blissfully euphoric all at the same time. Its probably one of the finest records i have heard in this genre in quite some time, highly recommended if you like your drone rock and avant garde noise. March 2010-2cd-Colony records-€9.99
