Road Records newsletter May 21st 2010

Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

As you can see I am back to my usual late ways again this week, but when you see the list of new titles and some older vinyl gems I think you will forgive me.

Benni Hemm Hemm has left the Morr Music label and has a new mini album out this week on the Kimi label.
Camera Obscura take away our single of the week gong this week, no surprises there then. Obviously Julie would kill me if I didn’t give it to them.
The Byrds “Sweetheart Of The Rodeo” is back in print on vinyl again, the album has now been remastered by the Music On Vinyl label and is fully remastered too.
It’s a good week for fans of guitar driven mind melting psyche rock this week, not one but two truly amazing album out this week. Check out the new Cave album or the Magic Lantern, or take my advice and check them both out.
Karen Elson [famous model and wife of Jack White] has her debut solo album out this week and its actually rather good I must say.
Irish singer songwriter Alice Jago has just released her long awaited debut full length album this week.
You may remember we had some copies of the limited edition Patrick Kelleher 7” on Record Store Day, well its back in stock now and is finally officially released on the Irish label Skinny Wolves.
Two rather choice new reggae reissues just in the door today. First one comes from Prince Jammy on the Pressure Sounds label with King Tubby also vying for my attention with his classic 70’s dub album “Dub From The Roots” getting a well deserved reissue.
Mr. Mike Patton is back in action again this week with his brand new project “Mondo Cane”.
Avant noise rock fans will be excited to hear that Sightings are back with a new album this week on the Brah label [Jag Jaguwar offshoot label]

You will find all our classic vinyl titles listed here.
While I am on the subject of classic vinyl, a couple of new labels have come to our attention in the last few weeks and we will be building up our stock of both of these in the next month or two. For the moment check out a few samplers from them. First one is a Folk / Blues reissue specialist label called Mississippi - http://www.roadrecs.com/stock/shopping.php3?start=1&action=6&label=MISSISSIPPI
The other label of note this week is the Doxy label featuring a bit of everything from Jazz to Folk to Avant Garde - http://www.roadrecs.com/stock/shopping.php3?start=1&action=6&label=DOXY
I supose I should also mention our love of the Monk label too, their 180 gram reissues really are a thing of beauty, its pretty much all early Folk and Blues. http://www.roadrecs.com/stock/shopping.php3?start=1&action=6&label=DOXY

That’s it from me for this week.
If there is anything on the list you want put aside for collection then just drop me back an email and I will reserve it for you.

Have a great weekend.

Hinson, micah p-And the pioneer saboteurs-The fourth full length solo album from texas based singer songwriter micah p hinson. The album features string arrangements by eric bachmann and members of techanko, devotcha and crooked fingers. This is his first collection of new material since the red empire orchestra album back in 2008. The first thing you will notice about this collection is the truly lush orchestration involved, its quite a different beast to the totally stripped down sounds of the previous outing. The album kind of hints at times of a folk singer playing the spaghetti western soundtracks of ennio morricone with richard hawley and calexico hovering around in the background. Its a really beautiful meeting of rough rustic folk sounds and big blasts of strings and brass. There are also a couple longer tracks that go into some kind of weird almost psyche folk like noisy jams, almost sounding like bonnie prince billy jamming with godspeed you black emperor. Never one to rest on his laurels micah p has come up trumps yet again. May 2010-Cd-Full time hobby-€12.99

Magic lantern-Platoon-I must admit i was a bit late discovering this band but thankfully i am now up to speed with them. This is the brand new collection of blissed out psyche rock from magic lantern, the previous album came out on the woodsist label and this one here is on the not not fun label. The band features cameron stallone from sun araw and the album was produced by best coast member bobb bruno. The album features seven tracks of totally blissful and mind melting psychedelic / space rock with a certain eastern kind of feel about it. Its full of lenghty instrumental guitar based workouts, pure heaven for fans of stoner psyche rock [like me]. Its a beautifully sludgey collection of bluesy psyche rock sounds with hints of sixties psyche folk and all manner of seventies space rock vibes. Try to imagine hendrix fronting hawkwind whilst on the strongest acid available. May 2010-Cd-Not not fun-€17.99

Villagers-Becoming a jackal-The debut album from irish songwriter conor o brien on the domino label. Conor is a former member of dublin indie rock outfit the immediate. The album features nine brand new tracks plus brand new recordings of the meaning of the ritual and pieces which both appeared on the hollow kind ep, released on irish indie label any other city last year. Quite simply this is one of the most accomplished debut albums we have heard from a local musician in quite some time, this young man is going to be around for some considerable time if this is anything to go by. The album features a superbly lush collection of heartfelt and emotionally charged almost folk like songs, both dark and totally uplifting at the same time. Its an album of almost orchestral like pop sounds at times with tons of beautiful string and brass elements included along the way. There are moments that kind of remind me of pure intimacy of early elliott smith with elements also of the classic songwriting sounds of labelmate cass mccombs. Its must be mentioned that this man possesses one of the finest voices i have heard in ages, equally happy with a low gentle whisper before hitting some soulful higher tones. From gentle folk to euphoric orchestral pop, this is an album that i can already see ending up in plenty of end of year polls. Sit back and relax for 45 minutes, you will the better for it afterwards. May 2010-Cd-Domino-€12.99

Elson, karen-The ghost who walks-The debut solo release from model turned singer / songwriter karen elson on the xl label. She was one of the founding members of new york based cabaret the citizens, and yes she is also married to jack white [white stripes]. The album features fellow cabaret cohort rachelle garniez, jack lawrence from dead weather, carl broemel from my morning jacket, jackson smith on guitars and jack white on drums / production. Because of her high profile modelling career and the fact she is married to jack white people will probably disregard this without hearing it, but in fairness this is a pretty good collection of lonesome country and folk sounds. Falling somewhere between the likes of neko case and cat power, the album features a collection of haunting folk ballads and some almost white stripes tinged country action. Not only can she write a decent country song but she has a wonderful voice too. Dont let your preconceptions get in the way of enjoying this rather surprisingly good record. May 2010-Cd-Xl-€13.99

Hold steady-Heaven is whenever-Hold steady return with their brand new album on the rough trade label, produced by dean baltulonis who also worked on their previous two albums. The album was recorded in dreamland studios in upstate new york and wild arctic studios in queens. The album also marks the first recordings without recently departed keyboard player franz nicolay. The album also features a notable guest spot from none other than john reiss [aka speedo from rocket from the crypt etc]. This is definitely an album featuring a much bigger emphasis on gutar based rock n' roll compared to previous efforts, with the departure of nicolay there are obviously less keys involved in their sound. Its still a collection heavily steeped in retro like american rock action, there is still plenty of that springsteen influence going on but this one also has a somewhat more raw kind of barroom rock like vibe about it. Its got a much more live loose like feel about it, almost sounds like it could have been recorded live in the studio this time. May 2010-Lp-Rough trade-€13.99

Jurado, damien-Saint bartlett-Damien jurado returns with a brand new album on the secretly canadian label. Recorded with fellow labelmate richard swift at his studios in oregon. Its another fine collection of rootsy folk based sounds from jurado with richard swift production giving the overall sound a somewhat phil spector like feel, full of stripped down drum sounds and reverb laden keys. The album kind of makes me think of a more rootsy americana take on the early scott walker / walker brothers albums, its almost gospel like at times too. Comes in a lovely card gatefold sleeve. May 2010-Cd-Secretly canadian-€12.99

King salami and the cumberland three-14 blazin bangers-The debut full length album from king salami and the cumberland three on the always reliable dirty water label. You know what you are getting when you see the dirty water logo on the back of a record these days, its gotta be some form of raw primal garage rock and thankfully this one is no exception. This is one hell of a funky garage rock collection, its full of rock n' soul action, the kind of thing we have been lacking since the mighty dirtbombs stopped making records. Its full of that brass led kind of detroit garage rock action. The basic ingredients would be bo diddley, billy childish, dirtbombs, screaming jay hawkins and the brass band from sun studios. This is seriously good time garage rock with a real emphasis on getting your ass on the dancefloor. May 2010-Cd-Dirty water-€13.99

Stornoway-Beachcombers windowsill-The debut album on the 4ad label from this new oxford based outfit. Features the most recent single i saw you blink and their previous minor hit zorbing. This is one of those albums you are either going to love or hate within seconds of hearing the first track. I have to admit it takes a few listens to really get to grips with it but this is turning into one of those rare albums that gets better every time. Its very much an album based in old vocal based folk music, but given a very very modern twist. Its one part belle & sebastian and one part simon & garfunkel with lots of added indie pop influences. The album features some truly superb old time folk like vocal harmonies. Comes in a big heavy card gatefold sleeve and is pressed on 180 gram vinyl. May 2010 - comes with a bonus free 7 inch single featuring two tracks recorded live at the sheldonian in oxford.-Lp-4ad-€16.99

The album was produced by ewan pearson and features a little help from al doyle [hot chip], jens lekman and singer cortney tidwell. Alva noto-For 2-Four years after the release of his first dedicatory record [for] comes the follow up, cleverly titled for 2. The album features twelve rather beautiful pieces recored by carsten nicolai between 2003 and 2008. The pieces range in sound from his trademark kind of glitchy minimalism to something more akin to maybe the likes of steve reich or ruyichi sakamoto [whom he has worked with in the past]. The album is bordering on something like minimalist classical music at times with lots of looping repetitive string and woodwind samples. Its glitchy ambient electronic music with a lovely warmth about it which is kind of rare to say. May 2010-Cd-Line-€21.99

Armfield, paul-Blood fish and bone-This is the third solo album from singer songwriter paul armfield, his first since evermine way back in 2005. Recorded almost live to tape using a selection of old analog valve equipment, the album has a lovely warm rustic kind of front porch folk feel about it. Armfield is joined by long time sidekick / multi-instrumentalist jc grimshaw, adam kirk [joan baez], rachel gardener [flute] and percussionist rupert brown. Its a lovely collection of downbeat rustic folk sounds calling to mind the old seventies folk sounds of artists like tim buckley, tim hardin, john martyn and even nick drake. May 2010-Cd-Artfull sounds-€16.99

Band of horses-Infinite arms-Album number three from this rootsy americana rock outfit, their first since leaving the sub pop label too. The album features a lovely blend of retro sounding americana roots rock, blissful indie rock and the sunshine sounds of the beach boys. Hinting at everything from mercury rev to flaming lips to neil young and built to spill. This is slightly more laid back collection compared to their previous two collections, featuring plenty of country tinged ballad action with some stunning vocal harmonies. If you like your rootsy folk sounds in a similar vibe to the low anthem etc, then this one will be pure heaven to you. May 2010-Cd-Columbia-€14.99

Bear in heaven-Beast rest forth mouth-The latest installment in a long line of brooklyn based psychedlic dream pop like outfits, bear in heaven have been active since 2003 but this i have to admit is my first experience of them. Its an album that manages to seamlessy merge everything from eighties synth pop to flaming lips like psyche pop to pure seventies prog experimentalism. Its an album of totally widescreen sounds which sees big washes of shoegaze like guitars meets big chunky synths. There are some moments that really remind me of the recent besnard lakes album with maybe just a bit more of a psyche / prog like atmosphere. Its an album that slowly engulfs you and is particularly enjoyable too. May 2010-Cd-Hometapes-€17.99

Benni hemm hemm-Retaliate-Brand new mini album from this icelandic based avant folk singer, his previous album came out on the morr music label and this is his first all english collection. The album features roger mcguinn, chris hillman and of course brand new member at the time gram parsons. This new reissue on the music on vinyl label comes with all the original sleeve artwork. Features the original tracklisting of you aint going nowhere, i am a pilgrim, the christian life, you dont miss your water, youre still on my mind, pretty boy floyd, hickory wind, one hundred years from now, blue canadian rockies, life in prison and nothing was delivered. Camera obscura-The nights are cold-Camera obscura present a limited edition single in honour of richard hawley, one of their favourite artists in the last few years. The first side features camera obscura covering hawleys track the nights are cold whilst the flip side features richard hawleys remix of the sweetest thing. This really is a thing of laid back pop beauty, then you all know how much we love camera obscura around here so what else would we say. May 2010-7"-4ad-€4.50

Cave-Pure moods ep-Chicago based psychedelic space rock outfit return with a new mini album on the drag city label, their previous album psychic psummer came out last year on the important label. Anyone lucky enough to have their hands on a copy of that album will snap this one up pretty quickly. The mini album features three extended psyche rock / space rock jams coming across like hawkwind meets can. Its full of krautrock like motorik beats overlayed with lots of trance like keyboard action and plenty of heavily distorted guitars and wah wah action. It really is a superb collection of trance like space rock sounds full of krautrock like grooves, sure to appeal to all fans of can, amon duul, loop and maybe even spacemen 3. May 2010-Lp-Drag city-€10.99

Copeland, eric-Doo doo run-Limited edition 7 inch only release on the post present music label from black dice and terrestial tones man eric copeland. Features doo doo run and fun dink death on the flip side. Its a typically bonkers slice of totally dubbed up psychedelic electronica coming on like some early bbc radiophonic experiment in the hands of lee scratch perry. The flip side sounds like some old piece of strip joint music at the wrong speed. The single comes packaged in a giant foldout poster sleeve. May 2010-7"-Post present music-€4.50

Druids of stonehenge-Creation-The druids of stonehenge were a rather youthful new york based garage / psyche band from new york. On the release of this, their first and only album, in 1969 their average age was around 21. The band formed in 1965 and by the time this album was released they had relocated to the west coast. The album features a damn fine collection of somewhat moody garage psychedelia, falling somewhere between early rolling stones and the chocolate watch band. The album has been out of print on vinyl for quite a long time and now comes reissued by the always reliable sundazed label. Pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Features six feet down, earthless, i put a spell on you, speed, bring it on home [cant get by alone], painted woman, pale dream, signed dc, forgot to begot, a garden where nothing grows and its all over now baby blue. Fight on, your time aint long-Various artists-Originally released on the truly superb vinyl reissue specialist label mississippi records in 2008. The album is kind of considered a follow up to their previous compilation, life is a problem, the album features a beautiful collection of guitar based gospel blues. The original pressing of 1000 copies is now all sold out so thankfully the label have succumbed to the pressure and reissued it again. The album features a collection of hard to find recordings from 1927 to 1934. The tracks have all been beautifully remastered by a label who really do put a lot of love into this old music. Features a collection of real gems by bukka white, kid prince moore, bessie johnson, blind joe taggart, blind mamie forehand, bo weavil jackson, mother mccollum, edward clayborn, mcintorsh and edwards, alfred g karnes and louise & joseph. May 2010-Lp-Mississippi-€13.99

Graham, kenny and his satellites-Moondog and suncat suites-This is a very rare 1957 album that features jazz interpretations of moondog originals all performed by a great british jazz line up [featuring stan tracy] using exotic instruments and all engineered by a very young joe meek. This is the first time this album has been in print since its original release back in 1957. The album now comes reissued by the trunk label, who else but trunk could unearth such weirdness. Along with kenny graham and stan treacy the album also features the likes of phil seamen, danny moss and ivor slaney. The album features a total of 16 tracks, the first ten are from moondog suite and the following six from suncat suite. May 2010-Cd-Trunk-€17.99

Harrys gym-Harrys gym-The debut album from this norwegian outfit on the hype city label. The album features ten slices of totally sultry electronic pop sounds coming across like lali puna with more guitars or maybe even blonde redhead on a slightly more electronic buzz, lets say it falls somethere between lali puna and blonde redhead. Features a beautiful blend of pulstating crunchy electronic / synth action and lots of fuzzy hazy guitar sounds. A couple of tracks actually remind me a little bit of the knife, with just a slightly more indie rock like feel. May 2010-Cd-Hype city-€13.99

Henry, pierre-Haut voltage / coexistance-The 22 min. “haut-voltage” is a product of henry's collaboration with french coreographer maurice béjart, recorded in 1956 for one of bejart's stage productions, and featuring the vocals of henry himself.by 1958 henry had left pierre schaeffer's rtf and had begun working in his own private studio. “coexistence”, recorded in 1959, comes from this new period, when henry had begun to realize that in order for “musique concrète” to evolve, it would have to begin to use electronics. “coexistence” is one of henry's first attempts at bringing the two together. Two long out of print albums compiled on one record by the reissue label doxy. Pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl and comes in a high gloss picture sleeve. May 2010-Lp-Doxy-€16.99

Henry, pierre-Le voile d'orphee-Pierre henry's 1953 “veil of orpheus” is the first example of symphonic “musique concrète”, (the use of non-traditional sources and “real” sounds, like trains, dogs barking, footsteps, etc, in place of actual instruments and then electronically manipulating these sounds in new ways.), originally composed for an opera (“orpheus 53”, written with movement founder pierre schaeffer for the donauescliingen festival). Despite the quantum leaps made in the field of electronics over the past 50 years, this initial experiment still manages to convey its original importance. The piece uses “concrete sounds” much in the same way a traditional orchestra would use individual instruments. Besides two versions of “veil of orpheus” (the original 27 minute version and the second 15 minute version used in the maurice bejart-pierre henry ballet “orpheus”in 1958), there are two shorter pieces (“entity” and “spiral”), which evoke an unsettling search for meaning that is so often associated with henry's work. Pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl and comes in a high gloss picture sleeve. May 2010-Lp-Doxy-€16.99

Henry, pierre-Musique sans titre / spatiodynamisme-“musique sans titre”, composed in 1951 at the "studio d'essai" of the rtf, was one of henry's earliest attempts at “musique concrète”. “spatiodynamisme”, on the other hand, was based on the 1954 recordings of a nicolas schöffer sound-sculpture. Metallic parts, mirrors, lights and sounds emanating from a 50 meter building interacted with the environment and visitors. Henry recorded various grating and scraping sounds from the metallic sculpture and then manipulated them for this piece, which was influenced by italian futurist luigi russolo’s “l’arte dei rumori”. Pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl and comes in a high gloss picture sleeve. May 2010-Lp-Doxy-€16.99

Jesus and mary chain-Darklands-In fairness to the two reid lads, they were never ever going to better their debut album psychocandy, so lets just consider this to be possibly their second best record. Thats the opinion of this particular fan, so lets just stick to the facts from now on, this is their second album and was originally released way back in 1987 on the blanco y negro label. Its an album with less white noise and more classic rock than its predecessor. Its still a damn fine record all the same, they just set the standard a little too high with their debut. Now pressed on 180 gram vinyl and comes with all the original artwork including printed inner sleeve with lyrics. May 2010-Lp-Plain recordings-€20.99

Kelleher, patrick-Contact sports-Limited edition vinyl only release on the irish label skinny wolves. The single is limited to a total of only 300 copies and features a brand new track contact sports along with a new alalal remix on the flip side. The single is a really catchy slice of almost eighties like synth pop mingled with a bit of slightly dark hearted cold wave. May 2010-7"-Skinny wolves-€5.99

King tubby-Dub from the roots-One of the truly classic dub album from the mid seventies is finally given a well deserved vinyl reissue courtesy of the jamaican recordings label. This was one of a trio of truly classic and influential dub albums that kink tubby released around this period, the other two being the roots of dub and brass rockers. The album features fourteen totally essential dub tracks, they are all available on other compilations but this is definitely the best way to enjoy them all together. Feaures dub from the roots, iyahta, mine field, hijack the barber, african roots, double cross, eas of [arrows hi-fi], invasion, dub of a woman, dub on my mind, steeling, dub experience, declaration of dub and a truthful dub. May 2010-Lp-Jamaican recordings-€16.99

Konono no 1-Assume crash position-Is there anything more joyous on a summers day than a brand new collection from konono no 1. Fronted by their now legendary home made thumb pianos these guys have been delighting fans with their trance like brand of african rhythms since the late seventies. It took their congotronics album in 2005 on crammed discs to really gain the kind of mass appeal that this bunch truly deserve. This is a collection of music based very much in rhythm, its very musical but they wont mind me saying that this is music for dancing to, as much as anything else. The band seem to lock into a certain groove and just allow the thumb pianos to create a truly hypnotic and intricate vibe with their regular solo bursts. Add in lots of group vocal chanting and you have yet another truly superb collection from konono no 1. If you have ever seen this bunch live then you will already know this is something very special indeed. May 2010-Cd-Crammed discs-€20.99

Kristofferson, kris-Please dont tell me how the story ends-A really beautifully presented package from the light in the attic label, not just for kirstofferson fans but i think fans of all country and folk music will love this one. The tracks were originally pretty sparse versions of tracks that kristofferson wrote with the intention of having other artists cover them, hence the subtitle of the album [the publishing demos]. What you get are a collection of tracks that both kristofferson and many other artists made very very famous stripped right down to mostly just one man and his guitar [for most]. The album comes with a stunning sixty page booklet featuring lots of detailed liner notes and some fascinating hand written notes by kristofferson himself about the tracks. You may think this is just for kristofferson collectors but trust me, this is definitely one for fans of quality country / folk sounds. May 2010-Cd-Light in the attic-€19.99

Lisa o piu-Behind the bend-Brand new collection of haunting ethereal psyche folk from this swedish singer songwriter. Its a lovely collection of slightly rustic and old sounding psychedelic folk with plenty of nods towards the seventies british folk movement. An album of ever so slightly kooky campfire folk sounds with lots of intricate and rambling instrumental passages, complete with pastoral like flute sounds. At times similar to the likes of espers and their many offshoot projects with just a slight hint of the more victorian like vibes of joanna newsom. This woman possesses a stunningly haunting voice, almost operatic at times. May 2010-Cd-Subliminal sounds-€14.99

Living sisters, the-Love to live-Los angeles based trio of very talented singer songwriters team up to make an album of truly beautiful retro pop. Featuring the vocal and songwriting talents of inara george [the bird and the bird], becky stark [lavender diamond] and eleni mandell. From the opening notes you could be forgiven for thinking you had accidentally put on an old vintage andrews sisters album, yes indeed its that retro. The good thing about it is that it works so very very well. You really do feel transported back to either the fifties or sixties, kind of depends on which song you listen to. The album veers between fifties doo wap vocal jazz and sixties motown girl groups. Its a beautifully mellow laid back affair and features some truly gorgeous all girl vocal harmonies. A lot of credit must go to producer sheldon gomberg for getting that authentic retro almost analog like sound from the sessions, its just ties all the tracks together perfectly. May 2010-Cd-Vanguard-€17.99

Nelson, willie-Country music-Brand new album from the legendary country singer willie nelson, his very first to collaborate with producer t bone burnett also. Strange for such a legend like willie nelson to call an album simply country music, but thats exactly what it is. The album sees nelson go right back to his roots again and finally make what could be called an album of country music. Its almost something akin to the johnny cash and rick rubin sessions with the producer contributing as much to the overall feel of the album. Nelson goes back and covers some old time classics, beautifully recorded by burnett using old vintage analog equipment. There is a lovely almost timeless kind of feel about the album, in fact its pretty hard to date it, these could easily be some long lost recordings from the earlier part of nelsons long career. Stripped down and rustic, this is a fine fine country album and its not often you can say that these days. May 2010-Cd-Rounder-€20.99

Neon plastix-Awesome moves-The debut album from neon plastix on the blow up label. The album features a big explosive blast of uptempo electro rock sounds, coming on like some long lost electro pop band from late eighties with a new found love of fuzzed up electric guitars. Its full of pop fuelled energy and a band that sound like they have a hell of a lot of fun making music in the studio. May 2010-Cd-Blow up-€13.99

Patton, mike-Mondo cane-Mike patton unveils his brand new mondo cane project on his own ipecac label, an italian rock meets orchestra hybrid. This is his first project since the reunion of his more famous project, faith no more last year. Recorded at a series of european performances including an outdoor concert in a northern italian piazza, the album features traditional italian pop songs as well as a rendition of ennio morricones deep down. Patton worked on the project with a full 30 piece orchestra and choir to create something totally unique. Sounding at times like some updated version of the lush french pop of serge gainsbourg meets some early walker brothers, this is definitely the one of the most accessible records patton has made in quite some time. A beautiful collection of orchestral pop songs with just enough weirdness to keep all his fans happy. May 2010-Cd-Ipecac-€17.99

Prince jammy-Strictly dub-Reissue of a rather obscure dub album that briefly surfaced in the early eighties on the us imprint jammys records and is now regarded as something of a minor masterpiece of jammys truly distinctive mixing style. The album now comes reissued by the pressure sounds label with liner notes from jeremy collingwood. The album features immigrant dub, basement dub, brooklyn dub, bqe dub, interboro dub, old country dub, 42nd street dub, 271 utica dub, bronx fashion dub and strictly dub. Produced and arranged by prince jammy. May 2010-Lp-Pressure sounds-€14.99

Redding, otis-Pain in my heart-Otis reddings debut album from way back in 1964. Originally released on the atlantic label. Riley, terry-Lisbon concert-A beautiful live recording of solo piano pieces from terry riley, recorded in lisbon [obviously] in 1995. This set of piano improvisations is a fine reflection of minimalist composer terry rileys lifelong study of indian music. The pieces were all recorded at the festival dos capuchos on the 16th of july, 1995. This is also the first time these pieces have been made available on vinyl, the album comes pressed on two slabs of 180 gram vinyl and features all ten tracks that appeared on the original cd release. The album features arica, negro hall, 15-16, havana man, island of never anger, peace dance, underworld arising, the ecstacy, the lake and mogolian winds. May 2010-2lp-Vinyl lovers-€23.99

Sightings-City of straw-The seventh full length studio album from this brooklyn based noise rock outfit, now on the jag jaguwar offshoot label brah records. Along with the likes of lightning bolt these guys have long been at the forefront of the avant garde noise rock scene. Their albums have ranged from pure white noise to discordant no wave in the past and this one is probably one of their more accessible so far. Influences from the likes of dead c, birthday party and jesus lizard begin to appear from the murky sludge from time to time, it would be fair to say this album features a collection of songs instead of just lengthy noise based workouts. Its still a fairly visceral affair, long time fans need not worry about that, full of heavily distorted guitar sounds and fuzzed up bass. It kind of reminds me of what oneida and lightning bolt would sound like jamming together. May 2010-Cd-Brah records-€17.99

Sleepy john estes-I aint gonna be worried no more [double vinyl]-A 24-song retrospective recorded between 1929-1937 in memphis, chicago and nyc, when tennessee native, sleepy john estes was at the height of his abilities. Despite the fact that estes wasn't the fastest or most technical blues guitarists out there, his distinct and emotional vocals, and uniquely relaxed style more than compensates for this, making him one of the genre's true geniuses. Estes, in fact, perhaps because he wasn't a guitar virtuoso, usually preferred to play in a group setting, and on these recordings he is often accompanied by great players like “yank” rachell on mandolin or hammie nixon on harmonica. He is also frequently accompanied by piano and sometimes second guitar. I ain't gonna be worried no more contains all of his best songs, including blues favorites like “the girl i love, she got long curly hair” (covered by led zeppelin), “drop down mama”, “milk cow blues” (covered by the kinks), and “someday baby blues” (covered by muddy waters, bob dylan). Pressed on double heavyweight 180 gram vinyl, its lacking a bit on liner notes but still the music itself speaks volumes. May 2010-2lp-Monk-€18.99

Stiff little fingers-Inflammable material-Reissue of the truly superb debut album from one of the finest exports this country has ever produced. When it comes to perfect punk rock / new wave debut albums, then this slice of pure aggression from 1979 is way up there near the top. The album now comes reissued on the 4 men with beards label and is pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Features suspect device, state of emergency, here we are nowhere, wasted life, no more of that, barbed wire love, white noise, breakout, law and order, rough trade, johnny was, alternative ulster and closed groove. May 2010-Lp-4 men with beards-€20.99

String of pearls-Various artists [jewels of the 78rpm era 1918 to 1951]-A compilation of rare international 78rpm recordings compiled by ian nagoski, the same man that brought us the truly wonder black mirror collection on the dust to digital label. Features fourteen tracks of calypso, indian vocal music, jewish cantoral, native american chants, turkish improvisation, chamber music from vietnam, serbian & ukranian dance music and much much more. The album was originally compiled by vinyl reissue specialist label mississippi records in 2009 and now comes reissued after an initial pressing of only 1000 copies. The album also comes with a lovely three page printed inner featuring highly detailed notes on all the artists involved, which believe me is rather helpful as i have never heard of any of them before. The artists featured are refik bey, ban-nhac than-kinb, rosa eskenazi, lord fly, john halik, la nina de los peines, shalom katz, amelita galli, nji raden hadji djoehla, zaki mourad, unknown chorus, unknown group, ustad abdul karim khan and reuben sarkisian. Vito-Monument-The second album from this welsh post rock outfit, released on the flower shop label, home to and run by former god machine frontman robin proper sheppard. Its a mostly instumental collection with just the odd track featuring some sparse vocals. Its an album of delicacy and raw energy, sounding at times like mogwai at their gentlest and explosions in the sky at their noisiest. The couple of tracks with vocals actually kind of remind me of their label owners original band, god machine, full of heartfelt emotion and raw noise. May 2010-Cd-Flower shop recordings-€13.99

Waits, tom-Real gone [double vinyl]-Features guests marc ribot, brain, casey waits, mark howard and les claypool, originally released in 2004 on the anti label, the album is finally back in print on vinyl again. Walls-Walls [with free cd version inside]-Brand new sigining to the kompakt label. The band features members of allez allez and banjo or freakout. Its an album featuring a somewhat euphoric blend of modern electronic ambience, krautrock, electro, psyche pop and even the odd hint of old school trance. At times comparable to the likes of the field with just a hint of the pure odd psyche electronica of early animal collective. Its an album the pulses with throbbing beats from time to time before then entering passages of pure electronic experimentation ala early krautrock. At its most blissful its classic kompakt. The album comes package with a free cd version of the record inside the sleeve. May 2010-Lp-Kompakt-€24.99

We are the world-Clay stones-The debut album from this la based outfit on the manimal label. From what i hear these guys are rather a spectacle to see live, featuring a dance troupe and performance artists amongst other things, but i aint seen them so i will stick to the music. The best way i can even start to describe this album would be to use the phrase burlesque electro rock with hints of everything from dark industrial sounds to weird electronic psyche folk. Its a real mish mash of sounds and for some strange reason it all actually works really really well. There are moments that even sound like it could be either aphex twin or autechre gone all industrial rock. Intriguing, challenging and highly enjoyable all at the same time. May 2010-Cd-Manimal-€13.99

These recordings cover his early years as a recording artist, from his debut recording session for victor in 1928, which yielded the famous “rolling stone”, plus three more tracks, followed by 8 more tracks recorded for vocalion in 1929-30, which included the legendary “that's no way to get along / aka “prodigal son” (famously covered by the rolling stones). The final 5 tracks were recorded in jackson, mississippi in 1935 and feature a second guitar player and a spoons player, resulting in the production of another classic, “old jim canan's”. The flip side is a much more laid back almost folky like affair, coming across like a more lo fi take on belle and sebastian. The band features padraig o reilly, jonny fun, david green, andy walsh, patrick daly and the former voice of the chicks annie tierney. May 2010-7"-Poltergeist-€4.99

A broken consort-Crow autumn-Brand new collection from english composer richard skelton under one of his many guises, a broken consort. This collection sees skelton using a broad palette of acoustic instruments including guitar, mandolin, piano, vi0lin and accordian. The album was originally released as two separate installments on his own label and now comes compiled onto one record by the tompkins square label. Some of the pieces have actually been reworked for this release and there are also one or two new pieces that didnt feature on the original cdr. The album now features a total of seven different pieces spread over a total of 44 minutes. Features some truly beautiful and hauntiing pieces of drone like neo classical sounds, mostly based around slow drawn out violin sounds, this kind of strikes me of the kind of thing john fahey would have made had he been a violinist instead of a guitar player. The sounds are beautifully scratchy, bordering on modern classical at times and then also calling to mind a more minimal dirty 3. This man just gets better with every release. March 2010-Cd-Tompkins square-€16.99

Astatke, mulatu-Mulatu of ethiopia-This album was originally released in 1972 on the worthy record label, mulutu is an ethiopian born sax player and has features quite a lot on the outstanding ethiopiques compilations, the sounds are deeply rooted in early sixties jazz and jazzy blues but with lots of laid back afro funk influences, features mulatu, mascaram setaba, dewel, kulunmanqueleshi, kasalefkut hulu, munaye and chifara, american reissue which comes in the original sleeve-Lp-Worthy records-€13.99

Blakey, art and the jazz messengers-A night in tunesia-For some strange reason art blakey and the jazz messengers released two album with the same name within two years of each other. This one originally came out in 1958 and features a collection of studio sessions from new york [recorded in april 1957], not to be confused with the blue note release from 1960. The album features blakey on drums, sam dockery on piano, jimmy de brest on bass, bill hardman on trumpet, john griffin on tenor sax and ferris bender on alto sax. The album features a night in tunisia, off the wall, theory of art, couldn't it be you and evans. The album now comes reissued on the bmg label and features the original artwork with liner notes on the back by nat hentoff-Lp-Bmg-€13.99

Blind blake-Back biting bee blues-Its fair to say we are dealing with one of the true blues legends here, a man seen by many as being the inventor of ragtime blues guitar. He died at the age of 40 and left a host of recorded material behind him, made at the time for the paramount label. The album features a selection of seventeen of his finest recordings [no dates or details attached for geeks like me but what the hell]. They have all been beautifully remastered thanks to the wonderful new reissue specialists monk records. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl too. November 2009-Lp-Monk-€13.99

Features some of the finest banjo led country blues sounds you are likely to hear from this period of american folk music. August 2009-Lp-Monk-€13.99

Broken bells-Broken bells-Brand new collaboration featuring james mercer from the shins and danger mouse. When i first head about this collaboration one thing that did not spring to mind was lush orchestral pop sounds, but overall that is exactly what this pair have come up with. Its not all just plain old orchestral pop though, dont worry, there is plenty of rootsy pop influences and that psyche tinged sound that the shins are pretty much famous for at this stage. I can only assume the kind of air like lush electronic sounds are the influence of danger mouse at the control desk. It must be said this is a real understated gem of an off kilter pop record full of summery fuzzy kind of psyche pop sounds, superbly produced and full of clever twists and turns along the way. March 2010-Cd-Columbia-€14.99

The album was produced by stephen shannon and features guest spots from kevin murphy on cello, jarja gaynor on viola, thomas haugh on drums, emma smith on violin, cillian macdonnell on drums and arrangements from london based duo geese. Its a beautiful collection of laid back folky based sounds with some truly haunting pastoral string sounds and luscious church organs. Its perfect late night headphone music with touches of the modern folk sounds of james yorkston, the slow core of low and even the odd hint of leonard cohen. Its like honey for your ears. The album was released earlier this year on the tin angel label and now comes reissued on the ever reliable scottish label chemikal underground. November 2009-Cd-Chemikal underground-€9.99

Now reissed on the sundazed label and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.-Lp-Sundazed-€19.99

Fahey, john-Death chants breakdowns and military waltzes-A strange concept this one as fahey released this album twice and both are now featured here on one cd. The original version came out on the takoma label in 1963 and featured 12 stunning pieces of music from one of the greatest guitar pickers of all time. In 1967 fahey then went back in to the studio and rerecorded ten of the twelve songs for a brand new version of the album released the same year. The album was also released on the takoma label and under the same name. Stop me when you get confused by all this. Basically you get ten tracks repeated but they are both different versions and completely different recording sessions. Both albums have now been fully remastered and compiled on one album. Both albums are considered by many fahey experts to be two of his finest sessions from the sixties.-Cd-Takoma-€19.99

Fahey, john-Selections by john fahey and blind joe death-This is in fact a reissue of the debut album from john fahey from 1964 with a different sleeve and one side of the album is credited to his alter ego blind joe death, this is a reissue on his own takoma label, features a selection of recordings from 1959 and 1964, these songs have only been available on the cd compilation the legend of blind joe death until now, reissued in 2005-Lp-Takoma-€13.99

Reissued on heavyweight green / yellow vinyl and comes with the original inner poster sleeve. March 2010-Lp-Dischord records-€13.99

Fools gold-Fools gold-Los angeles based multicultural outfit finally drop their self titled debut album for the iamsound label. Spearheaded by luke top and lewis pesacov, both native israelis who emigrated to la at a young age. The album is like some kind of mini tour around the different musical cultures of the world. Obvious influences would be funky african music and traditional folk of the middle east. These guys also add in lots of guitar based alt rock influences, its ends up reminding me a bit of vampire weekend with more of a traditional feel. 2009-Cd-Iamsound records-€16.99

April 2010-Lp-De soto records-€14.99

Johannsson, johann-And in the endless pause there came the sound of bees-Brand new collection from modern classical composer johann johannsson on the type label. The album was composed by johannsson as a soundtrack for mark crastes award winning animated film varmints. There really is only one person around at the moment that can do this kind of neo classical meets glitchy electronica with such truly beautiful end results. The album is probably one of most dramatic pieces to date, even featuring a choir on some tracks. Its a truly amazing piece of orchestral music, it must be said this one definitely leans much more towards the strings keeping the digital treatments to a bare minimum. The album ranges from some harold budd like piano minimalism to some truly incredible bursts of widescreen orchestration, it sounds like johannsson has used a full orchestra on this one. I have to say this is probably one of his finest collections to date. March 2010-Cd-Type-€17.99

Lewis, furry-I will turn your money green [double vinyl]-One of the all time great bluesmen of the 1920's, furry lewis was one of the only bluesmen of his generation to achieve widespread fame with the blues revival of the sixties, after a recording hiatus of nearly three decades. He originally began his recording career way back in 1927 and this album features tracks from those very first sessions. The album is pressed on double heavyweight vinyl. Mazzy star-She hangs brightly-The debut mazzy star album, originally released way back in 1990. It was the first time we heard the truly stunning voice of hope sandoval. The band was formed about a year previously by guitarist dave roback, sandoval joined his band opal at the time before then deciding to start a fresh project called mazzy star. Roback was also a member of rain parade in the past. The album still rates as one of the finest dreampop / slowcore albums of all time [obviously thats just my opinion] full of psychedelic fuzziness and almost rootsy like shoegazing vibes. The album is now reissued on beautiful heavyweight 180 gram vinyl and comes in a lovely heavy card sleeve. Its been four years since we last heard from these guys, their last album every red heart shines toward the red sun came out on the neurot label. Skip james-Jesus is a mighty good leader [180 gram vinyl]-Skip james was born in bentonia, mississippi in 1902 and began recording for the paramount label in the early thirties. He is probably best known for his rather unusual [at the time] three finger picking technique and high pitched voice, he was one of the earliest pioneers of a strain of the blues later to be known as bentonia. It is widely thought that he was also a major influnce on the legendary robert johnson. This collection on the monk label features a collection of some of his earliest recordings, though the lack of sleeve notes dont actually indicate when they were actually recorded. The tracks have all be beautifully remastered from the original 78rpm pressings, its got to be said the sound quality for such old recordings is truly superb. Toro y moi-Causers of this-Brand new full length album from chaz bundick on the carpark label. Its the first release since the truly excellent blessa single [also on carpark] from 2009. Toro y moi is basically a one man band centred around south carolina native chaz bundick. The album kind of reminds me a bit of animal collective or panda bear on a totally blissed out seventies soul / funk buzz. Try to imagine animal collective, daft punk and stevie wonder all working on the one laptop. Its full of seventies disco soul sounds with lots of broken hip hop beats and looping backwards sampling. For some strange reason i cant stop thinking of scritti politti whilst listening to the album, there are certain tracks that really do remind me of them, with maybe just a bit more of a psychedelic twist. This is definitely an early contender for soundtrack of the summer [if we ever get one that is]. March 2010-Cd-Carpark records-€17.99

Travelling with my portable electric phonograph-Volume one-A rather strange sounding concept for a compilation at first glance, the album features a collection of jazz sounds from the fourties and fifties from both africa and india. But delve a bit deeper and you will notice the one thing both continents have in common is their attempts to gain independence from british colonialism. At the time both cultures were obviously influenced musically by british ex pats and in some way by the american jazz scene. This here compilation attempts to bring together some of the biggest names on the jazz scene from both continents, its a kind of alan lomax world tour compilation really. A lot of these bands would have been house bands in local hotels and social clubs. Its a fine example of two musical cultures meeting and merging into some quite original. March 2010-Lp-Monk records-€13.99

Twistin rumble-Volume two-The second part in this truly wonderful collection of sixties stripjoint sounds, features a collection of sleazy sounds from the mid to late sixties, you get a collection of mostly instrumental garage rock, garage soul, r n b, funk, surf rock, rockabilly, sleazy garage pop and brass led garage soul, its like one great big sixties basement party, artists include alex harvey, the ambertones, carl lattimore, bobby jackson, knight brothers, big bo and the arrows, the furys, clarence and calvin, higgs and wilson, ervin rucker, classie ballou, marvulus mickey, bowlegs, the el cobras, ken jones, merle spears, famour george and curtis knight, july 2007-Lp-Twistin rumble-€13.99

Villagers-On a sunlit stage-Limited edition 7 inch pressing. Features on a sunlight stage and transitional confessional. Each copy is hand numbered and they are limited to a total of only 1000 copies worldwide. Released on the irish based label any other city. The single also comes with a digital download coupon so you can download both tracks from the labels website. This is probably one of the most beautiful songs written by this very talented songwriter. Villagers is former immediate member conor o brien. This is his follow up to the truly superb hollow kind ep from earlier this year [also on any other city]. This is a sublime piece of intimate acoustic folk, kind of sounds like some long lost gospel folk song from the past complete with haunting vocal harmonies.-7"-Any other city-€4.99

Voice of the seven thunders-Voice of the seven thunders-Brand new project from rick tomlinson, formerly known as voice of the seven woods [twisted nerve]. The band features long time collaborator chris walmsley on drums and rory gibson on bass, so its pretty much voice of the seven woods with a new name and it must also be added, a totally brand new sound. Whilst his previous collections have been on the hypnotic psyche folk side of things this new album is pure electric psychedelic rock, full of wailing guitar solo action. It seems the band just plugged in all their electric guitars and let loose in the studios without any prior rehearsal of the tracks. What came out is some truly hypnotic psyche rock with hints of middle eastern folk, hendrix like guitar solo action. Try to imagine if hendrix and john fahey were one person, then this is what he would have come out with. Its truly blistering stuff with just the odd break for a moment of acoustic trance like folk picking. March 2010-Cd-Tchantinler recordings-€17.99

Wooden shjips-Volume two-Sick thirst presents the second compilation of hard to find wooden shjips tracks. We try to keep the catalogue down to items we have in stock in the store so we can supply your mail order as quickly as possible, but due to that there will always be titles not on the site that we can get in stock. If there is something you are looking for that you don't see on the catalogue, chances are we can order it in for you. If you would like us to order something in for you simply fill in the form on the website. We will get back to you and let you know how long it will take (normally only takes a week or so) and if that suits we can then place the order for you. Please understand that we cannot get rarities, deleted items or rare singles no longer in print. You can access the order form at - http://www.roadrecs.com/order.php.
This service is completely free of charge, you only pay the price of the record, nothing else.
