Road Records newsletter May 13th 2010

Welcome to this weeks Road Records newsletter.

I can’t believe its mid May already, where has the year gone so far.
I think it would be fair to say we are renaming this week as official Villagers week. The new album is out this week and we are so very excited about this one. Not only is he one of the nicest people you could ever meet but he has also made one of the finest debut albums we have heard in ages, not just from an Irish artist either. The album is on special offer this week for only €12.99 on cd and €16.99 on double vinyl, we will have lots of posters and stickers to give away on Friday to the first 30 / 40 people who buy the album.

Fancy a bit of weird ambient electronica, then look no further than the wonderful new Black Dog album “Music For Real Airports”
The new Lazer Cyrstal album is getting lots of spins here this week, maybe because it reminds us of a meeting between Kraftwerk and Trans Am.
The former singer with Everything But The Girl, Tracy Thorn, is finally back with a brand new solo album this week.
The New Breed is a new double cd featuring the best of new Irish contemporary music, featuring tracks from 41 different artists for only €17.99.
Jamie Lidell is back with a brand new album on the Warp label this week, cd and vinyl [with download] are now in stock.
The New Pornographers album “Together” is now in stock on vinyl, its only €13.99 and comes with a download coupon.
Also just arrived in on vinyl is the new Phosphorescent album “Heres To Taking It Easy” and guess what, it also comes with a download coupon. I wish they just all came with download coupons then it would save me having to write that all the time.
And to finish things off this week we are entering into the art world with a lovely collection of six limited edition postcards courtesy of Hi-Tone. This unique little set of postcards features six poster designs made for U:Mack shows from Dublin born graphic designer Niall McCormack, check out www.hightone.ie to see some of his work and then bag yourself a set of this lovely postcards.

Thats it from me for another week, see you next week sometime hopefully.

Have a good weekend !

Villagers-Becoming a jackal-The debut album from irish songwriter conor o brien on the domino label. Conor is a former member of dublin indie rock outfit the immediate. The album features nine brand new tracks plus brand new recordings of the meaning of the ritual and pieces which both appeared on the hollow kind ep, released on irish indie label any other city last year. Quite simply this is one of the most accomplished debut albums we have heard from a local musician in quite some time, this young man is going to be around for some considerable time if this is anything to go by. The album features a superbly lush collection of heartfelt and emotionally charged almost folk like songs, both dark and totally uplifting at the same time. Its an album of almost orchestral like pop sounds at times with tons of beautiful string and brass elements included along the way. There are moments that kind of remind me of pure intimacy of early elliott smith with elements also of the classic songwriting sounds of labelmate cass mccombs. Its must be mentioned that this man possesses one of the finest voices i have heard in ages, equally happy with a low gentle whisper before hitting some soulful higher tones. From gentle folk to euphoric orchestral pop, this is an album that i can already see ending up in plenty of end of year polls. Sit back and relax for 45 minutes, you will the better for it afterwards. May 2010-Cd-Domino-€12.99

Black dog-Music for real airports-Music for real airports is a response to the reality of occupying the semi-public space of an airport, and a contemporary reply to brian enos classic ambient work from the seventies. Much of the raw material on the album was recorded in airports over the last three years. While on tour, the black dog made 200 hours of field recordings, much of which was processed and combined with new music whilst waiting on the next flight. For an album that may sound rather odd on paper, this is a really beautiful collection of lush ambient electronica interspersed with all manner of found sounds. The two sources blend together almost seamlessly really, most of it is pure ambience with just the odd track featuring any kind of beats. Its the kind of thing that would fall between early orb, global communication, fennesz and biosphere. The album is limited to a measly 765 copies in total. May 2010-Cd-Soma-€12.99

Holy fuck-Latin-Holy fuck return with their brand new album on the young turks label. Recorded in a barn in rural ontario. In the past the band featured a rotating cast of musicians but this is pretty much the first one to feature their consistent touring lineup of mart schulz [drums], matt mcquaid [bass], brian borcherdt [effects / feedback] and graham walsh [effects / feedback]. This is the long awaited follow up to their previous album from 2007. The album features a pulsating blend of almost trans am like space rock sounds and motorik krautrock rhythms building up into some kind of indie rock meets early rave hybrid. Features lots of scuzzy analog keyboard sounds, full of distorted white noise. It kind of reminds me of trans am jamming with fuck buttons. The album comes packaged in a rather amazing sleeve featuring cut out letters on the front and heavy card gatefold sleeve. May 2010-Lp-Young turks-€16.99

Lazer crystal-Mcmlxxx-Chicago based spaced out krautrock obsessed outfit featuring mikael de graff [mahjonng] and josh johanpeter [cave, mahjonng and bobby conn]. Previous lazer crystal releases have been available as ultra limited hand crafted art projects so this is pretty much their proper debut full length album, courtesy of the thrill jockey label. The album features a rather superb collection of space age sounding krautrock vibes mixed with all kinds of eighties like electro pop influences. Kind of reminds me a little bit of kraftwerk jamming with trans am with a few members of the human league joining in from time to time. Its got a lovely dark electro pop kind of feel about it whilst also being full of psyche / space rock electronica. Futuristic pop music with a lovely retro haze about it. May 2010-Cd-Thrill jockey-€13.99

Lidell, jamie-Compass-Brand new album from singer jamie lidell on the warp label. The album features an almost all star cast of guests contributing with both beck and chris taylor [grizzly bear] at the helm on production duties. Both beck and chris taylor also play on the record along with dan rossen [grizzly bear], chris bear [grizzly bear], feist, brian lebarton [wilco], nikka costa and legendary drummer james gadson [worked with the likes of bb king, herbie hancock and martha reeves]. Its an album of quirky off centre modern funk / soul sounds with lots of kooky electronic and avant garde tangents. You can definitely hear the beck influence on certain tracks, its truly funky at times. This almost reminds me of what early stevie wonder would sound like jamming with aphex twin. May 2010-Cd-Warp-€13.99

Male bonding-Nothing hurts-Nothing hurts is the sub pop debut and the first full length from dalston based trio male bonding. The band features robin silas christian [drums], john arthur webb [guitar / vocals] and kevin hendrick [bass / vocals]. The album features a fairly blistering collection of old school jangly indie rock, grunge pop and fuzzed up post punk. At times it kind of reminds me a bit of early nirvana [bleach] with a slightly more avant punk twist to it. The album also has lots of nods back towards the heavier side of jangly indie rock with plenty of choppy new wave tendencies. Its almost like a slightly more grunged up punky wedding present with bits of sixties garage surf thrown in, imagine dick dale fronting some fuzzed up indie rock band. With 13 tracks clocking in at just under thirty minutes this is pure bliss for guitar heavy indie rock fans, its the perfect length for this kind of album too, as soon as its finished you just want to hit the start button again. Limited edition white vinyl pressing which also features a full download coupon. May 2010-Lp-Sub pop-€13.99

New pornographers-Together [with download coupon]-The new pornographers return with their fifth full length album, produced by the band and phil palazzolo in various studios including brooklyn, vancouver, woodstock and catskill. The album features twelve brand new tracks, nine written by ac newman and three from dan bejar. The band features the classic eight piece lineup of ac newman, dan bejar, john collins, neko case, kurt dahle, kathryn calder, todd fancey and blaine thurier. The album also features a couple of notable guest spots including annie clark [st vincent], zach condon [beirut], will sheff [okkervil river] and the dap kings horns. The album features a very catchy and somewhat complex collection of almost psychedelic like pop sounds with hints of everything from seventies soft rock to glam pop. Its intimate in a classic indie lo fi kind of way at times, particularly on the more piano led ballads whilst also taking in the kind of classic american pop sounds of she and him. The album comes in a gatefold sleeve and also features a download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. May 2010-Lp-Matador-€13.99

Phosphorescent-Heres to taking it easy [with download coupon]-Matthew houck returns with his first new collection of songs since the album pride in 2007, his last album to willie featured an album made up entirely of willie nelson covers. This time houck is backed by his full touring band in the studio, pride was pretty much an all solo affair so the sound on this one is much bigger and probably more akin to the willie nelson covers album. Its still pretty much another collection of rustic country rock sounds, full of rootsy rock and classic old time country influences along the way. Its definitely got elements of that early neil young country rock vibe going on, there are even hints of the band and gram parsons in here. The album features some truly beautiful pedal steel guitar action [im a sucker for that sound] and lots of uplifting brass sounds. As far as big production sounds goes, its definitely his most ambitious album to date. If you are a fan of the modern rustic country tinged sounds of the likes of bonnie prince billy then this is definitely one for you. The album comes with a free download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. May 2010-Lp-Dead oceans-€13.99

Randazzo, elisa-Bruises and butterflies-Songwriter and clothing designer who has previously worked with the red krayola releases her debut solo album for the drag city label. Randazzo played violin and sang with the red krayola on several tours and has appeared on four of their albums to date. The album features a lovely collection of downbeat and somewhat haunting folk based sounds. Its an album that harks back a wee bit to the classic early seventies folk sound, its even got hints of the likes of judee sill or linda perhacs whilst also reminding me of the more modern ethereal folk sounds of the likes of espers or marissa nadler. May 2010-Cd-Drag city-€13.99

Thorn, tracy-Love and its opposite-The former singer with everything but the girl returns with her long awaited third solo album. Its been three long years for fans since her last solo outing out in the woods. This time she has returned to her independent roots and the album comes released on partner ben watts label strange feeling records. The album was produced by ewan pearson and features a little help from al doyle [hot chip], jens lekman and singer cortney tidwell. Its a beautifully sparse collection of folk like sounds, quite a lot of the album features just thorn and a piano. A perfectly intimate collection and her voice sounds as good as it ever has. May 2010-Cd-Strange feeling records-€11.99

Villagers-Becoming a jackal-The debut album from irish songwriter conor o brien on the domino label. Conor is a former member of dublin indie rock outfit the immediate. Declining winter-Goodbye minnesota [limited to 250 copies]-The debut album from the declining winter, originally released on cd on the irish based label rusted rail [2008]. Richard adams is the declining winter and of course was previously a member of hood. Like his former band hood this is a really beautiful collection of live instruments, found sounds and touches of electronica. Thers are slight comparisons to the early dubby post rock of tortoise along with the more subdued intimate pop of postal service but adams also adds in lots of lo fi scratchy sound effects and heaps of crafty underground hip hop beats. Its a superbly wide ranging collection of sounds all held together with a certain rustic live feel. Its both highly intricate and hypnotic at the same time. A rare gem that you really shouldn't let pass you by. The album now comes pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl, this is the first time this album has been available on vinyl. Its limited to only 250 copies in total and also comes with an exclusive bonus track which didnt appear on the cd version. The album comes packaged in a lovely handmade card sleeve and also comes with its own unique hand stamped old used postcard, each copy has a different post card so no two copies will be the same. Foals-This orient [part one]-Part one of a two part series of 7 inch singles. Features this orient and starky remix on the flip side. The track is taken from their most recent album total life forever. Its a rather quirky slice of post rock pop, for want of a better description. Its a wonderful slice of almost african tinged indie rock meets post rock, catchy as hell and distinctly foals like too. May 2010-7"-Transgressive-€4.50

Foals-This orient [part two]-Part two in a series of two different 7 inch singles. Features this orient and a chad valley remix of spanish sahara. The track is taken from their most recent album total life forever. Its a rather quirky slice of post rock pop, for want of a better description. Francis, sage-Life-Sage francis returns with a brand new album on the anti label. I think it would be fair to say this man has always been pushing the boundaries of what hip hop can and should sound like, he has always been one to try and work with musicians from outside to genre to try and bend / blend the divisions between rock and hip hop. On this album francis has enlisted producer brian deck to blend it all together. Guest musicians / songwriters on the album include jim becker and tim rutili from chicago outfit califone, ex grandaddy frontman jason lytle, chris walla from death cab for cutie, mark linkous of sparklehorse, joey burns and john convertino from calexico and devotchka. May 2010-Cd-Anti-€15.99

Gayngs-Relayted-According to the press release that came with this record, the album was inspired by the music of 10cc and features an all star lineup including justin vernon [bon iver], mike noyce [bon iver], magafaun, solid gold, ivan howard [the rosebuds], pos and ryan olson. The all star lineup part is true and in fairness when you listen to the album itself you will soon realise that the first part is quite true too. They even go so far as to include a cover of the godley and creme 1985 hit single cry. So it would be fair to say this is an album that will definitely appeal to fans of laid back seventies and eighties funk pop and radio friendly aor. Whether its tongue in cheek or not, i am not really sure but you can make your own mind up. Personally its not a cup of tea i will be drinking too often. May 2010-Cd-Jag jaguwar-€12.99

Lafaro-Lafaro-The debut album from lafaro on the smalltown america label, home to fellow northern irish outfit and so i watch you from afar. Its a blistering collection of old school post hardcore sounds with just drums, guitars and big chunky distorted bass. Sounding like a big black / garage rock hybrid blended with the explosive sounds of girls against boys, jesus lizard and the likes of the cows and other am rep artists. Its a big filthy collection of sludge rock, grunge rock and post hardcore with just the odd nod towards the kind of intricate stop start sounds of math rock. May 2010-Cd-Small town america-€13.99

May 2010-2cd-Emi-€17.99

Shout out out out out-Reintegration time-Brand new album from this canadian synth pop / indie rock outfit on the normals welcome label. Its a big thunderous collection of sounds, taking in so many different genres at once that you dont really know what to call it. At times sounding like the meeting of seventies space rock and some kind of ambient rave hybrid before turning into air playing eighties synth pop. One thing it definitely is though, is a collection of rather catchy [cheesy] electronic pop songs that kind of make their way into your head and wont leave. May 2010-Cd-Normals welcome records-€15.99

Villagers-Becoming a jackal [single]-The first single to be released from the brand new debut album of the same name. Features twenty seven strangers on the flip side.-7"-Domino-€4.99

Action pause reaction-Rewind ep-Limited editon three ep featuring rewind, see the light of day and breaking under strain. The single comes pressed on a really cool looking miniature vinyl replica cd, it actually looks like a 7 inch shrunk down to fit into your cd player. The ep features a big guitar heavy slice of thunderous grunge rock meets post punk. The opening track kind of reminds me of nirvana jamming with therapy. May 2010-Cd-Own label-€3.99

Besnard lakes-The besnard lakes are the roaring night-The besnard lakes finally return after a three year hiatus with the long awaited follow up to the besnard lakes are the dark horse. The band were originally formed in 2001 by montreal based husband and wife pairing jace lasek and olga goreas, they released their previous album on the jag jaguwar label aswell, their first collection [volume one] was on the english label earworm way back in 2005. This is an album of true epic beauty sounding at times like a more rootsy rock take on shoegazing fronted by the beach boys. Its has to be said straight away though, that there is much more going on here than just a few simple comparisons, this is an album of truly expansive sounds. In fact, i cant think of many albums that make me think of fleetwood mac and my bloody valentine at the same time. Its got hints of seventies rock, both of the rootsy variety [ala neil young] and the more melodic [dare i say elo] with plenty of hefty guitar solo workouts thrown in. What this pair do though is take all those ingredients and make something both retro and totally original sounding, utterly infectious at times whilst also not afraid to rock out too. There are also moments that remind me of the blissful intimacy of the likes of mazzy star or even low with lots of hazy reverb drenched guitar sounds. They have hinted at greatness with the previous two albums but i really think they have achieved it with this new collection. March 2010-Cd-Jag jaguwar-€11.99

Bonnie prince billy-The wonder show of the world [limited edition with free bonus 7 inch]-Will oldham returns with his brand new album on the domino label, joined again by longtime collaborator emmett kelly [lie down in the light, the letting go and beware]. The album also features guest spots from shahzad ismaily and phil elverum [mt eerie / microphones]. This man has been making some of the finest modern rustic folk / country music under many different names going way back to 1992 when he was using the name palace [palace brothers & palace music]. Having then gone on to release several albums under his own name will oldham, he does like to confuse fans with his many alter egos, this here album is his 12th or 13th [we think] as bonnie prince billy. Will oldham is an artist that seems to love recording albums with new bands each time he enters a studio so its always a bit of a surprise when a new one arrives, you just never know what sounds are going to hit you. This new album is definitely one of his most stripped down and sparse sounding records in quite a while, if fact most of it sounds like it was just him and emmett kelly in the studio. Its nice to see him back in this almost solo role, the songs are given lots of room to express themselves. The album features a rather stunning collection of rustic country tinged modern folk music, i suppose it would be fair to say there are hints of everything from johnny cash to early dylan in here whilst also taking a bit or a tour around the more traditional sounds of early american folk music from times past. This man does have a sound all his own though, there is no mistaking will oldham with anybody else, his voice is probably one of the most distinctive sounds we know of. This man just doesnt make bad records, they are always either really good or superb and we think this is one of his best in recent years. This limited edition version comes packaged in a plastic sleeve and features a very very limited edition 7 inch vinyl featuring two tracks that dont appear on the album itself. The 7 inch features midday and you win. April 2010-2cd-Domino-€17.99

Bonnie prince billy-The wonder show of the world [with bonus limited edition 7 inch]-Will oldham returns with his brand new album on the domino label, joined again by longtime collaborator emmett kelly [lie down in the light, the letting go and beware]. This man just doesnt make bad records, they are always either really good or superb and we think this is one of his best in recent years. The album is pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Also comes with a very limited free bonus 7 inch single featuring midday and you win [not featured on the album itself]. April 2010-Lp-Domino-€16.99

Dum dum girls-I will be [limited coloured vinyl with mp3 download coupon]-The debut full length from the dum dum girls on the sub pop label. The band have previously released an ep on captured tracks, a 7 inch on hozac and an ep on zoo music. The album was recorded at home by main songwriter dee dee and was mixed with the help of richard gottehrer. The album features thirty minutes of superb retro indie rock action full of fuzzed up jangly guitar sounds with just the odd hint of sixties motown thrown in. Imagine the jesus and mary chain jamming with the shop assistants and the ronettes. Its got a lovely raw feel about it, full of reverb laden distorted guitars and stripped down drum sounds. Anyone into the sounds of the c86 era will just fall in love with this from the word go. Limited edition coloured marble effect vinyl pressing which also comes with a bonus mp3 download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. March 2010-Lp-Sub pop-€13.99

Lambert, alan-Pteranodon-Alan lambert is an irish based electronic producer and short film maker. This album features two separate 20 minute long pieces. They are two very beautiful synth driven ambient pieces with hints of everything from jean michelle jarre, tangerine dream and klaus schultze. There is also an element of some early krautrock experimentalism akin to the likes of cluster or even harmonium. The album features pteranodon and also a bao a qu. July 2008-Cd-Metal dragon music-€9.99

Mason, steve-Boys outside [with bonus download coupon]-Brand new solo album from the former singer with the beta band, released on the domino records offshoot label double six. Along with singing / writing with the beta band mason has also worked under the name king biscuit time and black affair. The album was produced by richard x. Judging by the sleeve notes this is an album written and played entirely by mason himself, at least there is nobody else credited anywhere, so fair play to him for producing an album with such big scope and sound. It would be fair to say the sounds on the album are definitely very reminiscent of his work with the beta band, in particualy the legendary early releases known as the three eps. Its mildly psychedelic and somewhat funky in a kind of trip hop style at times. Its full of gentle trance like trip hop beats which mason then layers with lots of piano and hazy guitar effects. There is no mistaking the beta band influence on this album and that is never a bad thing in my opinion. Limited edtion vinyl pressing, comes in a lovely heavy card gatefold sleeve and is pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Also comes with a download coupon featuring all tracks from the album. April 2010-Lp-Double six-€18.99

Mee, gavin-Breech birth-The debut album from this irish based singer songwriter. Heavily influenced by the classic seventies folk sounds of the likes of nick drake, a bit of early dylan and vocally quite reminscent of the wonderful john martyn. A really lovely mellow laid back affair. The album was originally released back in 2006 but has been unavailable for quite some time now, it is now reissued and available to buy once again. 2010-Cd-Own label-€11.99

Pallett, owen [final fantasy]-Heartland-The artist formerly known as final fantasy returns with his third solo outing to date, he is now recording under his own name due to some stupid legal case taken against him for using the final fantasy name. His first album came out way back in 2005 [has a good home] and was followed by the exceptional second album he poos clouds in 2006. It may be nearly four years since his last album but its fair to say pallett has been busy with other projects in the meantime. Along with touring as a one man band pallett has also provided string arrangements for several bands including grizzly bear, arcade fire, beirut, last shadow puppets and mountain goats. This is his first album to be released on the domino label. This is an album of true orchestral beauty, probably one of the most lush collections your are likely to hear all year round. Known for his superb violin playing this album features what sounds to my ears like a full blown orchestra at times, full of dramatic string and horn bursts. Its an album the flows seamlessy through many genres with such each too. Sometimes you think you could be listening to some modern take on steve reich or phillip glass and before you know it things turn into some kind of indie broadway musical [ala sufjan stevens maybe]. Its highly intricate and joyously catchy at the same time, full of layered string sounds and palletts gentle almost hushed vocal delivery. Its one of those rare albums that comes up with something new each time you listen to it, sometimes classical pop and sometimes just pure classic quirky indie pop. Its got to be said this is something truly original. January 2010-Cd-Domino-€11.99

Redneck manifesto-Friendship-Brand new album from one of irelands very finest instrumental post rock outfits. Its hard to believe this is their first album in nearly six years now, the last album i am brazil was released way back in 2004, for some reason it just doesnt seem that long. The album was recorded in blackbox studios in france and is probably their first to really incorporate the keyboard sounds of fifth member neil o connor [aka somadrone]. Its definitely an album much more based on krautrock like rhythms, its still jam packed with intricate post rock guitar interplay but this one has a real motorik like groove provided by some sublime drum and bass action. If anything this album sounds more like the redneck manifesto jamming with can or neu, the lush analog synth sounds really do add a whole new dimension to their already rather complex sound. This truly is pure heaven for lovers of either intricate post rock or trance like krautrock from one of the finest in ireland [if not worldwide]. It may not have the same raw edge of their first album but i think you will find this is up there as one of their finest, if not their best so far. The album comes in a lovely embossed digipack sleeve. March 2010-Cd-The richter collective-€13.99

Scott-heron, gil-Im new here-The legendary gil scott-heron returns with his first new full length album in thirteen years. Assisted by producer and head honcho of xl recordings richard russell. Scott-heron is probably most famous for his truly legendary track the revolution will not be televised. The album features a total of fifteen tracks spread over 28 minutes, some almost pure spoken word with the barest of background music. The album features several covers including im new here by smog, me and the devil by robert johnson and ill take care of you by bobby bland. Its a beautifully soulful collection of sounds, actually reminds me a little of the massive attack tracks that featured horace andy in the past, gently funky but simply allowing to voice to carry each song. The production it must be said is just beautiful, its all very understated with gentle beats, strings and lush synths going about their business in the background. This album though, is all about this mans truly amazing voice, deep and menacing at tmes, heartfelt and soulful on others. Its a real joy and at only 28 minutes you will just keep hitting the repeat button for more, never has less is more been true. February 2010-Cd-Xl-€16.99

Tallest man on earth-The wild hunt-The second album from swedens kristian matsson, his first for the dead oceans label, his previous album the shallow grave came on out swedish indie label gravitation. It would be hard to review this album without at least mentioning the early sounds of bob dylan, his voice and delivery really are quite reminiscent of a young dylan in his prime. The album has a lovely rustic stripped down kind of feel about, sounds like it could easily have been recorded live on his front porch at times. Its a lovely collection of rustic old time folk sounds with maybe just a hint of the intimate folk vibes of the likes of bon iver, though this collection is certainly a much more uptempo foot stomping affair. April 2010-Cd-Dead oceans-€11.99
